Vancouver Whalers vs Regina Force

Vancouver - 5, Regina - 3

We are gonna jump into this one near the end of the first period. With just two minutes remaining in the first, the Force were the first team to get on the board. McLovin scored a goal off of an assist from Hermione Granger, his second of the year. Regina had an early lead.

The second period brought an explosion of scoring, all from Vancouver. Just 40 seconds into the period Elvis Smulans got his first tally of the year to even up the game. Jay Robinson would pick up his fifth goal of the year eight minutes later. Top draft pick Kaspars Tsizling got his second goal, finding the net eight minutes later on his team's power play. Robinson had the hot hand, getting his sixth season goal and second of the night, just two minutes later. John White found the twine for Vanouver one last time, with only ten seconds left in the period. Vancouver had taken a commanding 5-1 lead.

Regina looked helpless for most of the third period, not able to find the scoring touch. McLovin tried to jump start them late with his second goal of the game, coming on a powerplay with under three minutes left. Tyler Guest slapped one in with 13 seconds left to make the score a bit closer, but Vancouver would hold on to the 5-3 win.

Mike Schmidt picked up the win for the Whalers, saving 21 of the 24 shots against him. Mitch Kostur picked up the loss for the Force, allowing 5 of the 40 shots he saw past him.

Jay Robinson's two goals and two assists in the game earned him the first star. John White scored one and assisted on one to pick up the second star and Nicholas Flamel got the third star for his two assist night.

Montreal Impact vs Detroit Falcons

Montreal - 1, Detroit - 3

The first period of this match went off without a scoring effort from either side. Detroit's defense was airtight, as the Impact only managed a single shot on goal in the entire period.

Detroit finally got some offense going in the second period, as Mikko Kalash scored his third goal of the year with five minutes remaining in the period. Jordan Cousins and Janis Vitols assisted, and it came off of a power play. Riku Showron added another tally with just 40 seconds remaining in the period, his third of the season. Janis Vitols assisted on his goal as well.

Montreal tried to mount a comeback in the third period, as George Constanza netted his third goal of the year on an assist from Tom Jervis. The Impact would not be able to get anything else going however. Jordan Cousins would add another goal to seal the deal, pushing the lead to 3-1. Janis Vitols and Riku Showron got the assists.

Dymo Ranjan was bested 3 times out of 20 for Montreal, getting the loss. Martins Petersons had an easy job in net, facing only 11 shots and saving 10 of them.

Riku Showron's goal and assist earned him the first star for Detroit, followed by Janis Vitols who assisted on every one of the Falcons goals, and Jordan Cousins. Cousins had one goal and one assist.

Kelowna Knights vs St. Louis Scarecrows

Kelowna - 1, St. Louis - 2

We jump ahead to the 17th minute of the first period in this one, when Shawn Tucker found his first goal of the season for St. Louis. Jordan Eberle and Zallerras Szlerchek both assisted on the goal, which came with two and a half minutes left in the period.

The second period was entirely empty, as the teams combined for 14 shots but not a one of them could best the goaltenders. They would head to the third period close, with St. Louis leading 1-0.

Kelowna came out and got an early power play, taking advantage of it just four minutes into the last period. Magnus Vikstrand got his second goal of the season, coming off of assists from Jan Cross and Patryk Zaryk. It took ten minutes for someone to break the 1-1 tie, but Joshua Botelho finally did just that. He netted his second goal of the year on assists from Drewiskie Dale and Shawn Tucker to give the Scarecrows a one point lead. They would hold onto it for the victory.

Aboud Chamas saved 27 of 29 shots in a solid performance, but was still saddled with a loss. Jackson Weekes had one of his better performances thus far, with 22 saves on 23 shots for the win.

Shawn Tucker managed a goal and an assist in this match, and received the first star for his efforts. Jackson Weekes was named the second star for his night in net. Joshua Botelho was named the third star for his game winning goal.

Summary

We saw two low scoring affairs this time around, as teams had to fight and claw for their wins in closely contested matches. Vancouver had one of the strongest individual periods we have seen so far, putting up five goals in the second period of their game with Regina.

The Scarecrows have rattled off a couple of wins after their long series with the Montreal Impact, and look to turn their early season woes around. Janis Vitols had a nice game for Detroit, as it was understated how important his passing was in their game against the Impact. Vitols passing led to all three goals for the Falcons, notching an assist for all of them.

The Schmidts keep winning, as Mike got a victory for his team over the Force. He saw considerably less shots, and made sure not to let his team down. The Schmidts, although unrelated, are both playing well in the early goings of this season. They appear to have somewhat of a small rivalry between them.
