S50 Halifax Draft Recap

Coming into the S50 SMJHL Entry Draft the Halifax Raiders needed to fill a few holes in the line up left by the departure of numerous veteran players. GM Ed Balls and his scouting team were left with a big job, one that would shape the direction of the Raiders for the next few seasons. They put in a ton of work and were extremely prepared coming into the draft. Holding 1st overall pick was not a bad place to be either. Let’s see how they did!

With the 1st overall selection in the S50 SMJHL Entry Draft, the Halifax Raiders Select….

raiders Abel Skinner!! raiders

Skinner is a highly talented offensive defenseman from the United Kingdom. Standing 6’0” tall and weighing in at a sturdy 195 pounds, he boasts Scoring, Puck Handling and Defense as his strengths. A very good make up of skills for an offensive Dman in today’s league. With checking as a weakness he won’t be looked at to knock people off the puck in the corners but he’s strong and skilled enough where he can easily hold is one on the physical side of things. He comes in with an impressive 80 Defense rating and will no doubt be looked to shore up the blue line for Halifax right away. He has high upside and as a #1 overall pick I’m sure Skinner will be leaned on heavily in his rookie season. Excellent selection by Raiders management. Winner Winner Skinner gets a Chicken Parm Dinner!

With the 7th overall selection in the S50 SMJHL Entry Draft, the Halifax Raiders Select….

raiders Julien Villeneuve!! raiders

The Raiders wasted no time selecting the highly skilled center Villeneuve out of Monaco on the French Riviera. Previously know for topless beaches and formula 1 racing, it will now forever be knows as hockey hotbed thanks to Villeneuve going 1st round. Julien at 5’9” and 185 pounds comes in with a specialist center build favoring Scoring, Face Offs and Defense. This is a unique build that really strengthens a team especially when capped out. He should dominate face offs and give his team possession quite often while lighting the lamp at a good rate. Julien won’t put anyone through the boards with checking as a weakness, but since his team will have the puck a lot he won’t have to! This pick will go a long way in re-filling the center position in Halifax. Great pick by the Raiders!

With the 16th overall selection in the S50 SMJHL Entry Draft, the Halifax Raiders Select….

raiders Bjornoson Bjornosonson!! raiders

One of the best names in the draft, Bjornson Bjornsonson is a 6’2” 205 pound uber-talented playmaking winger out of Sweden. He impressed the Raiders brass in scouting and they were happy to see him on the board in round 2. He’s a supreme playmaker already having a 70 passing rating and we expect that will increase even more as he develops this season. His strengths are obviously passing along with skating and puck handling. This guy can really dangle out there and is going to create a lot of space for himself and his teammates with his speed and hands. I have a feeling all the scoring wingers are going to want to be on his line. Should make a nice pairing with a physical scoring winger and a pure sniper center. Another great pick by Raiders management.

With the 18th overall selection in the S50 SMJHL Entry Draft, the Halifax Raiders Select….

raiders Randall Hall!! raiders

With their 4th pick in the top 18 the Raiders wasted no time calling Randall Hall’s name on draft night. The 6’3” 212 pound playmaker out of the good ol’ US of A has great size and skill for an 18 year old. He’s a primary playmaker with passing, skating and defense as strengths, one of the most effective builds, especially when capped out he’s going to be a good one as he develops also. Speed and passing with an attention to the defensive side of things is every coaches dream. Look for Hall to be a real catalyst out there for Halifax this season. The great picks by the Raiders just keep on coming!

With the 22nd overall selection in the S50 SMJHL Entry Draft, the Halifax Raiders Select….

raiders Indigo Trevino!! raiders

The 5’10” 220 pound Latvian power forward was just what the Raiders needed after taking 4 very skilled offensive minded players in a row. With strength, skating and puck handling as his strengths he’s going to be very strong on the puck and get to a lot of loose pucks also. With a passing weakness he won’t be looked at to set up goals but he should be a good finisher and checker. Garbage goal time in front of the net on the the powerplay and a beast in the corners will likely be Trevino’s game and that’s a great addition to any roster. Raiders management with another good selection here!

With the 26th overall selection in the S50 SMJHL Entry Draft, the Halifax Raiders Select….

raiders Thicc Cheezy! raiders

As well known fan of cheese, this is easily my favorite name in the draft, I love that Raiders management decided to pick Thicc Cheezy!  The 6’1” 215 block of cheese is a Canadian playmaking forward who comes in with a melting array of skills. Specifically Passing, Skating and Defense, he will ooze talent all over the ice. He can shred defenders easily with his skill and grate people up against the boards with his size. He’s aged to perfection and sometimes smells like feet, but he is so versatile he can be used in many formats and has a lot of variety to his game. A truly delicious pick by Raiders management!

With the 27th overall selection in the S50 SMJHL Entry Draft, the Halifax Raiders Select….

raiders William Kelly!! raiders

The American playmaking winger stands 6’0” tall and clockes in at 190 pounds. He boasts Passing, Skating and Puck Handling as his strengths and should be a high tempo offensive player right out of the gate. His ability to move the puck and set up plays along with his elite speed is a real strength of this game. He should fit nicely into a new look Raiders line up this season and with some more development on the defensive side of things could be a steal. Good pick here by Raiders management!

With the 30th overall selection in the S50 SMJHL Entry Draft, the Halifax Raiders Select….

raiders Biggus Lickus!! raiders

Raiders could not help taking Biggus Lickus late in the draft, I’m sure part of the reason was so they could put Biggus Lickus on a line with Thicc Cheezy, that’s just too good to pass up. Biggus is pretty big too at 6’3” and 210 pounds. The American offensive center comes in with Scoring, Face Offs and Fighting as his strengths. A unique build for sure, but he already has an 80 scoring rating and 70 face offs so he’s going to make something happen out there for sure. Will be interesting to see how he develops but worth a flier late in the draft. Solid choice by the Raiders.

With the 35th overall selection in the S50 SMJHL Entry Draft, the Halifax Raiders Select….

raiders Sydney Mahoney!! raiders

An offensive minded defenseman, just the 2nd Defender taken by the Raiders in this draft, the American stands at 5’11” and weighs 172 pounds. She (based on avatar and render) comes in with scoring, puck handling and of course desense as strengths, with the common checking as a weakness. Offense will be her game and generating scoring chances from the blue line. Could be a good addition on the powerplay down the road with some more development and should be strong at even strength as well. A nice flier in the later rounds for the Raiders, they could have something here.

Great Draft overall for Halifax, they brought in some good players with high upside and the room is looking very strong post-draft as well. My former Junior team is in good shape and I can’t wait to see what these rookies can do this season. Keep working hard everyone and best of luck!!
