DeMaricus Smyth Award

for Top Forward

The nominees are...

Jaguar Johnson, Team GB & Ireland (@Shadowz1797) - You might be tempted to think that ice time determines quality. Johnson’s numbers prove that thinking wrong: despite playing just over fourteen minutes a game in the round robin and medal round, the Brit scored at nearly a point-per-game pace, with 16 points in 17 games. Perhaps the high-point of his tournament was a two goal, one assist performance in the semi-finals against Team World, where he took home the first star.

Esa Parmborg, Team World (@Steelhead77) - Seven goals and twelve assists in fourteen games. Team World had several key players at each position, including center Esa Parmborg, a veteran at the junior level. He boasts a wicked shot and two-way game that provided quality minutes for his team, and made the top-3 stars of the game five times in the round robin. A two goal performance in the semi-finals wasn't enough to help his team move on to the gold medal game, but in the end there's no one else that could claim to have the tournament Esa had statistically... at least among forwards.

Hariken Urawa, Team World (@uhh) - A revelation of the tournament in many ways, Hariken Urawa helped boost Team World's offense in both the round robin and medal round. He thrived with Parmborg and fellow Japan-native Suzuki Namokato, tallying four goals and sixteen assists in sixteen games.

Harvey Danger Award

for Top Defenseman

The nominees are...

Derek Bohne Jr., Team UCORCAL (@wumaduce) - Though he may not have displayed a jaw-dropping offensive game, UCORCAL's Derek Bohne Jr. served his team well in his own zone, eating up key minutes with the man advantage and on the penalty kill.

FR Finn-Rhys, Team DACH (@FinnRhys) - Finn-Rhys managed to translate fantastic form with the Raiders in S49 to a dominating performance at the S49 WJCs. FR finished the round robin with sixteen points in fourteen games, stellar numbers for a defenseman, especially one that can shine at both ends of the ice.

Akira Ren, Team World (@Velevra) - A key member in Team World's high-flying offense. Ren took home a well-deserved rookie-of-the-year award at the end of the SMJHL's S49 season, and then went on to perform admirably for Team World here at the WJCs. He averaged just under twenty-two minutes per game in the round robin, and then increased that to twenty-three and a half in the medal round. He'll be discouraged with Team World's semi-finals exit to the British Isles, but can rest assured his tournament serves as a capstone to a terrific rookie year for the Japan-native.

Peter Larson Award
for Top Goaltender

The nominees are...

Kasperi Braulin, Team Canada (@TheFlash) - Don't let a disappointing showing against the British Isles fool you into thinking Braulin had a poor tournament. His steady presence in net was key in helping Canada take the top position in Group A over some very skilled nations.

Nolan McMahon, Team DACH (@Reynolds) - Like the rest of his team, McMahon didn't have the greatest of a round robin. His .883 save percentage and 3.26 goals against average indicated there was room for his performance to hit another level, especially considering his pedigree in the SMJHL. In the medal round, when his team needed him the most, McMahon was there: three games, three wins.

Patrick Neiderreiter, Team USA (@DieselJ) - Lauded by many as the favorite for this award coming into the tournament, Niederreiter might've felt he faltered a bit against expectations. just five wins in fourteen games left the US at the bottom of their group. But those who watched the games would know the United States' poor showing at the tournament is certainly not a result of poor play by Patrick. Despite his less-than-stellar numbers, he performed admirably behind a defense that was at times under siege.

Alex Andani Award
for Top Rookie

The nominees are...

Marcus Ohlsson, Team Sweden (@CleverPin) - Ohlsson plays with a maturity that's rare for someone so young. 18 hits points to a developed physical game, and big special teams minutes indicates Sweden's management was more than willing to trust him when it mattered most. He tallied sixteen points in fourteen games, enough to land him at third in the top-scorers list of the round robin, behind only Team World's Esa Parmborg and Hariken Urawa.

Hariken Urawa, Team World (@uhh) - Looking forward, Team World's management is fortunate to have a player like Hariken Urawa eligible to play for the team. Not only did he put up stellar numbers for a rookie, he demonstrated quality play at both ends of the ice, finishing the round robin with a +4 rating, 47 minutes on the powerplay, and 30 minutes on the PK.

Ursin Zimmerman, Team DACH (@UrsinZ) - Strong but silent, Zimmerman was a workhorse for Team DACH. He averaged 22 and a half minutes per game throughout the tournament, and though he may have been disappointed to only tally four assists in his team's fourteen games in group, he nearly matched it in just three games, with three assists, in the medal round. There's no better game to play your best than the one that matters most, either: he earned himself the second star in the gold-medal game.

Brady McIntyre Award
for WJC MVP

The nominees are...

FR Finn-Rhys, Team DACH (@FinnRhys) - Unsurprising that Finn-Rhys is nominated for the Most Valuable Player. The big defender had a tremendous tournament, and was always there when the team needed him to step in and make a big play or quiet down the defense.

Lallo Selman, Team DACH (@BDonini) - Despite a somewhat understated round robin, Selman's game took to another level in the medal round, where he led all players in points. Five goals in three games, including a snipe tallied just seventeen seconds into the gold-medal game that set the pace for a 5-1 victory over the British Isles.

Hariken Urawa, Team World (@uhh) - Though he wasn't the leading scorer on his team, you could make the argument that Urawa was there at the most important moments. The rookie played in all situations and provided a physical edge that helped Team World tie for top of their group. One wonders what he's capable of with a bit of experience under his belt.

And the winner is...
