(2300 words, ready for grading)

s50 is finally underway and off to an absolute shit start. In all honesty we should likely either cancel the season altogether and start s51 or at least resim the first dozen games until we get the desired result. The New England fanbase would agree.

It wasn’t long ago at all this draft class was drafted into the SHL, but they have grown up now and are starting to make their impact on the league. While they might not be ready to take on the best of the best on their own, there is a lot of good talent here and they might just surprise some people.

The Roster

Julio Tokolosh Blizzard recently finished his rookie campaign to expected results. His game isn’t there yet, but as a s47 draftee he has a lot of time to round out his play and become the next big thing for the Blizzard. Part of a select club of rookies that won the cup in their first season, his contribution cannot be understated. After all, it’s a team game. @Julio Tokolosh

Martijn Westbroek syndicate has 2 seasons under his belt, and had quite the offensive year for himself on Chicago. A 30 pt season is nothing to scoff at, and it just being his sophomore season makes it all the better. He has the makings of a true talent for the Syndicate, but hopefully he can work on his defensive game a bit to further his team’s chances of being playoff bound. @JNH

Lallo Selman syndicate has not seen any SHL action yet, but I would expect him to have a big freshman season for Chicago. Wrapping up his SMJHL time with an impressive season, it looks like he has nothing left to learn in the juniors and is ready to make the jump to the Syndicate. If Chicago can put together a good season, I would guess that Selman would be a very large part of it. @BDonini

Gunnar Soderberg Barracuda came into the league last season and took it by storm. Putting up a great 32 pts in their first season, Soderberg displayed an amazing two-way game and poise that you don’t generally see from rookies. Soderberg is a stud for Tampa and they’ll want to build around them and make Soderberg a key part of their core moving forward. @sköldpaddor

Noah Gallagher Chiefs was moved to the Jets after two poor seasons with them. It’s tough to break into the league at such a young age and unfortunately Gallagher never found his true footing in Winnipeg. Minnesota will likely give him a chance to play big minutes and show off his talent and hope to jumpstart his SHL career with a fantastic season. It’s never too late to be a Richan candidate. @fever95

Aaron Wilson Steelhawks had quite the respectable season in Hamilton. The odds were against him, with it being his first SHL season and with the Steelhawks finishing last, but he made it out with a great 25 pt season and a solid plus minus to boot. Wilson will be a big piece for Hamilton moving forward and though they have moved a couple pieces around while trying to find the right team chemistry, I doubt they let go of a player of Wilson’s caliber. @aaronwilson

Austin Roenick Barracuda is set to debut with the Barracuda in s50 after 4 long seasons in the minors. While it may have taken him longer than some of his draftmates to reach the show, he used this time to become a dominant juniors player and lead his team to a Laurifer trophy. Roenick will be an impact player for the Barracuda this season and they hope that he is for the entirety of his career. This season will be a good indicator of the progress he’s made and the steps he still needs to take. @XLeafer

Nicolaj Muller Stampede is another player yet to complete an SHL season, but he absolutely tore up the SMJHL last season. Bringing home tons of hardware but not the most important prize, the Four Star cup, Muller will have a chip on his shoulder after having a tremendous season lead to no cup in the end. Muller has the difficult task of trying to break onto what is a hugely stacked team offensively, but after the last season he had Buffalo would be smart to make room for him. Muller will be a big player to watch this season, with a potential ROTY bid on the line, as well as in the future, as he continues to gel with the Buffalo team and hone his skills. @esilverm

Slap McShotty Wolfpack already has 2 years SHL experience, and improved greatly after a sub par rookie campaign. Tagging along on a wild President’s trophy and finals run, McShotty still has some work to do to fine tune his game but New England management really likes what they’ve seen from the young forward. @bbjygm

Theo Morgan Panthers just completed his rookie season in s49, and played decently from what the numbers show. He wasn’t great on the defensive side of things but that’s to be expected, but 24 pts is nothing to scoff at when it comes to first year players. If he can continue to grow as a forward on both sides of the puck I see some top line minutes in his future. @Otrebor13

Tony Ford Panthers is another Panthers rookie that just wrapped up their first season. It went about as expected, a low-ish pt total and a negative plus minus, but he will be a big piece of the Panther’s defense as the old guard starts to show signs of age. Maybe some time with Toner at some point could be good for him, as Toner is one of the best offensive Dmen in the game right now and it would help Ford to learn how to chip in offensively and cover for Toner when he makes a bad pinch. @Fordyford

Jax Duggan Steelhawks signed an unprecedented offersheet, leaving the Jets after being picked 1st overall in the s47 entry draft and heading east to Hamilton. What we saw was a disappointing season to a player with one of the biggest paychecks in the league. He is still young, but expectations are now high for the defenseman and a bounceback year for Duggan would improve his standings in the eyes of fans all over the league. @SecondSucks22

Akashi SixNine Steelhawks is another player who recently moved to Hamilton, playing his 2nd SHL season on his new team. His numbers were very solid especially when you take into account his age and team performance. Akashi is looking like a true stud 2-way Dman for the future and Hamilton management is likely very pleased with this pickup, despite the high price they paid for him. @FourFour

Thomas Bathory Panthers recently signed with the Panthers after a solid season with the Wolfpack. His career numbers are meh so far but there's tons of time and opportunity on a new team that doesn’t have as much of a logjam on defense. A breakout year from Bathory would make Panthers’ fans and GMs very happy with the signing. @vbottas17

Charlie Serpe Specters has had 2 seasons in the show, and really refined his game for the start of s49. Doubling his points and jumping his plus minus up has given Specters fans something to be excited for from the young Dman. Another great season from Serpe would be great ammo when he inevitably asks for a ten million dollar contract, but right now the numbers just aren’t there to warrant it. @Serpe x 13

Harry Carpet Stars was hoisted into a starting position with the Stars last season, and performed surprisingly well in the role. The win category is a little lacking but he faced a lot of shots and saved over 90% of them. Carpet has the looks of a true starting goalie in the SHL and if he keeps his play up the Stars rebuild will shorten by a couple seasons. @Carpy48

Alternate Captain 2

Esa Parmbourg Dragons has been a true leader with the Raiders and is now ready to make the jump to the Dragons. Faced with the tough task of keeping an older team in contention and in the continuous playoff race season after season, Parmbourg joins a team with a classy identity and adds to their poise with great leadership qualities. A natural pick for a letter on this team, Pambourg will be someone the other team will try to shut down. @Steelhead77

Alternate Captain 1

Eko Van Otter Wolfpack improved upon their rookie season by quite a bit in s49 and also took home some hardware, specifically a President’s trophy and an Eastern Conference Champs ring as well. Van Otter is another player who is a natural leader at such a young age, and will take up a huge role in the development of Wolfpack prospects as he continues to work on his own game and try to put up some good numbers against the best of the best. @hotdog

Captain

Corey Kennedy syndicate has been a player of note in Chicago, and for good reason. After a great rookie campaign, Kennedy is already a big member of the defense corps on the Syndicate. Kennedy put up 22 pts all while playing a solid defensive game, and just looks like he has a good head on his shoulders as he excels in almost every aspect of the game. Kennedy is a good choice to captain this team and he will look to lead them to glory against players with hundreds of seasons more experience than this one. @SDCore

Now that all the players have been announced, the roster is as follows:

Aaron Wilson
Akashi SixNine
Austin Roenick
Charlie Serpe
Corey Kennedy ©
Eko van Otter (A)
Esa Parmbourg (A)
Gunnar Soderberg
Harry Carpet
Jax Duggan
Julio Tokolosh
Lallo Selman
Martijn Westbroek
Nicolaj Muller
Noah Gallagher
Slap McShotty
Theo Morgan
Thomas Bathory
Tony Ford

Line Speculation-
Line 1-
Van Otter-Parmbourg-Tokolosh

Not much of a first line, these players don’t get much in the way of points. They will have to show up big for this team and hopefully build some chemistry so they don’t get absolutely demolished. Van Otter does prefer to shoot the puck and can maybe build something with Tokolosh.

Line 2-
Selman-Westbroek-Roenick

A solid second line, Westbroek is the only one who has seen any SHL action but is capable of putting up a good point total. If Selman and Roenick can find their game quickly against SHL caliber players, I would expect them both to be goal scorers while Westbroek is the set up guy. If they can’t find their footing it could be disastrous for this line.

Line 3-
Muller-McShotty-Soderberg

A good third line, Soderberg will have to lead the charge on this line as being the most gifted player here. Nothing against McShotty or Muller but their seasons don’t compare with Soderberg’s, especially with Muller still adjusting to SHL hockey. They all like to dish the puck as well, so they might not get as many points as one would hope but hopefully their defensive game is sound enough to kill the clock if they do have the lead.

Line 4-
Gallagher-Wilson-Morgan

A very impressive fourth line, these are all talented players who could take advantage of some matchups if the timing is right. Gallagher hasn’t had the best showing but the drive is there, Wilson is already a solid 2 way forward and Morgan can put up some good numbers as well. If this line clicks, watch out, they might be able to surprise us. All of these players can score goals so Morgan might take more of a playmaker role in that case, but having a versatile line such as this one is never a bad thing.

Defense Pairing 1-
Kennedy-Ford

A decent top pairing, they are still young and might have trouble keeping up with the top forwards they are tasked with defending. Neither of them are incredible at their defensive game yet so they will have to use their spry youth and stamina to adapt quickly on this stage.

Defense Pairing 2-
SixNine-Duggan

A good second pairing, they are already teammates and linemates for Hamilton and can maybe use that to build something special here. Duggan will really have to pick up his game as his competition is not mere SHL teams, but incredible superteams that will look to force mistakes and pot them home against his goalie. SixNine already has some defensive prowess but it will be no easy task playing against these teams.

Defense Pairing 3-
Bathory-Serpe

A solid bottom pair, the coach will likely use this pairing as a shutdown pair, not to go spark some offensive. These young players have proven they have defensive skills, and though they aren’t at the top of their game yet, no one expects them to be.

Starter-
Carpet

Carpet had an outstanding year for the North Stars and I fully believe he is capable of starting minutes. He faced tough shots against tough teams and stopped a lot, and he could be the MVP of this Greyhound team potentially if he really brings his A-game and plays like a superstar.

Thanks for reading, and I hope you stay tuned for more announcements regarding the SHL LEGACY TOURNAMENT.
