According to Detroit Police, a dangerous crash on the left-bound side of Woodward Avenue in suburban Birmingham, Michigan has left minor-league Detroit Falcons defenseman Izem Abioye in a coma, due to injuries sustained during the crash.

Police say Abioye was in a limo with another person when the driver, who has not been named, fell asleep at the wheel, and the limo rolled into the median and crashed into a nearby tree. The passenger with Abioye is in fair condition, suffering from a broken collarbone, fractured ribs, a punctured lung, and a compound ankle fracture. The driver escaped with minor wounds, but was arrested after testing positive for DUI of marijuana. Abioye has been listed with a deceleration head injury, when he was supposed to have slammed his head against the back of the limo’s seat. He has been placed in a medically induced coma and doctors are working to fix the damage caused.

“It’s too horrible to think about” recently-retired teammate Savoli Tankovic said. “Everyone in the locker room was in shock. We saw him hours before, he was as chipper as could be. Horrible. Just horrible.” Teammates took time out of practice to hold a vigil for the health of their badly-hurt teammate. “It’s unlikely he’ll ever play again. It’s just too cruel to think that this could happen. This was supposed to be his breakout year” commented teammate Jagger Fouquette “I hate it.” Detroit fans are also in shock. Fans outside the arena in Detroit kept up their own vigil with the “Abby” chant going on for hours at a time.

As far as we know, Izem Abioye’s professional career is over. It’s unlikely he’ll ever be able to walk again, says doctors at the nearby Beaumont Hospital.
