Media Graders Loveable Buttnugget Season 50 started last night with a game between two of the most storied franchises in the SMJHL. The St. Louis Scarecrows were in Kelowna to face the Knights to get the season started. Fresh from the draft, both teams were lining up a fresh batch of rookies, and notably both teams were playing rookie goaltenders to start the season. Game Recap
Period 1
The game was off to a flying start, with the Scarecrows immediately barraging Luca Del Vecchio early on, following an erarly minor penalty by Josef Novotny. In spite of the early dominance by St. Louis, it was the Knights who got on the board early with Tah Puhcheese completing from sophomore Ryan Shepard and 3rd year Raquel Castillo Guitierrez. The Scarecrows would continue to pressure the net and it would pay off with Flash Gordon lighting up the board 10 minutes in. A tripping call to Andrey Barbashev II late in the period would put the Scarecrows up through a Jakub Bruchevski goal. It was however short lived as they in-turn took a penalty the Knights would capitalize on off the faceoff with Price Devitt tying it up. All in all, St. Louis shot 16 times. Kelowna only 4.Period 2
The game resumed with both teams exchanging time in the offensive zone, but both Luca Del Vecchio (KEL) and Elizabeth Doyle (STL) held on for their respective teams. Colton Strudwick was called for a Double Minor for roughing but Kelowna was unable to capitalize on it. They were however able to sneak a goal past Doyle late in the 2nd as Kalevolaripaavo Kaspertommevisnapuu caught the Scarecrows defense going the wrong way on the breakaway to slot it past the goalie.Period 3
Tah Puhcheese would set the tone early in the 3rd period for all the wrong reasons as he got ejected for attempting to injure Flash Gordon. The ensuing Power Play for the crows got off to a terrible start as Novotny intercepted a cross ice pas on the blue line to break away and score a short-handed goal. The Crows would get one back from Yamamoto Mitsuharu but that would be all in the 5 minutes of powerplay. However they would get an additional power play goal when Prince Devitt was sent to the box for holding, James Ronlain getting that one. The Knights would not let their home opener go sour as Raquel Castillo Gutierrez would pot one mid way through the period and Kaspertommevisnapuu would add another tally 13:41 in on another power play. That would be it for the game and the Knights would be able to celebrate a strong start to Season 50. Stat of the Game
Shots. The Scarecrows shot 47 times at the net but could only get 4 past Del Vecchio. The Knights shot 31 times and got 6 past Doyle. More interestingly is that 5 of their goals came off the 10 shots they took in the first and third periods combined. Three Stars
1 – Kalevolaripaavo Kaspertommevisnapuu – Led his team with 2 goals and 1 assist in 21:37 of playtime. Was a presence to be feared in the offensive zone, recording 5 shots on net. 2 – Simon LeBlanc – 3 assists, +2 to start the season and 4 hits as well as lead his team in total time on ice with 22:35 mins 3 – Raquel Castillo Gutierrez – Scored the game winner but also added an assist to finish the night at +2.

Plug of the Game
Our second installation of POTG for the season takes a trip out to St. Louis, where Colton Strudwick takes home the award for this matchup. Playing as the third line center for the Scarecrows, he sees less than 10 minutes of ice time per night on average, and although he didn't post a negative rating or even throw many hits this game (just 1), he presence was a great assistance for the Knights. In the second period, he initiated a bit of a mess in front of his own goalie and took a double minor Roughing call, leading to Kelowna's 3rd goal of the game... and they never looked back.

Holy Shots!
St. Louis got a ton of shots showing that their offense was very strong but didn't quite convert enough. Whether that's due to them not being efficient or Kelowna having crazy goaltending, it is a positive sign that they can overrun teams' defenses. They got some goals early and did have the lead at one point in the first, but Kelowna was able to take control of the game in the third. I think the Scarecrows were mostly bitten by really poor goaltending, letting in 6 goals on 31 shots is awful. I mean that's barely over 80% save percent for their goalie. |
