Game 72 on the SMJHL was a classic goalie match. 2 teams at the opposite sides of the standings meeting in what some claimed to be a one sided affair in favour of the Lions.  Both Markus Tegernako of Lethbridge and Kasperi Braulin of Vancouver put in one hell of a goalie duel.

1st period:

Lethbridge took advantage of a very undisciplined Vancouver team as Both Zlatan Ibrahimovic jr, who got a 2 minute minor for Hooking at 11:22, put Lethbridge on a Power play. Bjorn Leppanen of Vancouver and Hugh Jazz of Lethbridge got offsetting tripping minors putting the Lethbridge Powerplay on a 4 on 3. Thomas Vanice of Lethbridge scored his 3re goal of the season with Cal Clucker and  Akira Ren getting the assists at 13:21.

Lethbridge heavily outshot Vancouver 15 to 5 in the first. It looked like it would be a long night for the Whalers.

End of the 1st :  Score: Lethbridge 1 - Vancouver 0
                          Shots: Lethbridge 15 - Vancouver 5

2nd period:

The second period still saw Lethbridge dominate as they put up another 13 shots to Vancouver 8. Vancouver also put the Lions on the Powerplay 3 more times in the 2nd but Lethbridge could not convert their chances.

At the 6 minute mark, Jan Zacha won a face-off versus Johnny Patey in Lethbridge Lions zone. The winning draw went to Cullen Gray. Cullen Gray took a shot that Missed the Net. Free Puck was retrieved by Akira Ren for Lethbridge Lions but his pass was intercepted by Jan Zacha in neutral zone who passed to Cullen Gray who was just about to enter the Lethbridge Lions zone. Gray hit Sami Rieder with a pass who quickly hit Jan Zacha with a give and go. Jan Zacha made no mistake as he went bar down foe the Goal.

End of the 2nd :  Score: Lethbridge 1 - Vancouver 1
                          Shots: Lethbridge 28 - Vancouver 13

3rd Period:

The third period was very even as play went back and forth. Vancouver finally outshot Lethbridge but only 10 - 8.  It was Jules L'Eclair’s penalty for Hooking at 13:25 that changed the game. Marcus Ohlsson scored his 7th of the season, assisted by Bobby Bobcalf and Zlatan Ibrahimovic Jr.  at 14:43.

End of the 3rd :  Score: Lethbridge 1 - Vancouver 2
                          Shots: Lethbridge 36 - Vancouver 2

The lethbridge Lions staretd the game roaring, with a goal on 15 shots in the first period. On their side, the Vancouvers Whalers were only able to put five shots on the net. During the second part of the game, however, despite the Lions still roaring, with a total of 13 shots on the net, they weren’t able to score. The Whalers were able to put the game back to null when one of their 8 shots managed to go pass the Lions goaltender. The Lions calmed down in the third, only managing 8 shots on the goal and none of them scoring. The whalers got away with the win with their final goal of the game in 10 shots.

Dark Horse

The dark horse of the game is without a doubt Zlatan Ibrahimovic jr. The rookie who hails from Sweden and known by his father, Big Zlatan himself, is always looking to prove himself. He wants to be what his father is in the world of football. Ibrahimovic jr., played an impressive game as he played well on both ends of the ice. He played dirty when it matter where he got called for interference, roughing and hooking. He played well during the powerplay picking up an assist and also defended his team well by sacrificing his body to block 2 shots. The Swedish hunk was everywhere on the ice and did everything he can to make himself known. Although he wasn't crowned a star, he very well played a good game as a two-way defender. Only time will tell how good Ibrahimovic jr. will become.

Goalie Heroics

well everywhere but in net Lethbridge was dominant and yet they weren't up on the scoresheet. Vancouver was getting overrun and overloaded with shots from the start, including getting outshot 15-5 in the first period. But Kasperi Braulin stood strong and only let in 1 goal on 36 shots, which is really impressive. A .972 save percentage is really good, he looks like he is too good for this league. He just couldn't be beat and he carried his team to a narrow victory that they didn't necessarily deserve. He was absolutely a hero and helped his team not only stay in the game but win in spite of being outplayed.

Plug of the Game:

It's not very often you see the winning team take home the POTG award, but that's exactly what's happening with this one. Bjorn Leppanen is a top pairing defender for the Vancouver Whalers and put on quite the show, and not the good kind, in this matchup. In the first period he started his brigade with a bang, taking a tripping infraction halfway through the first which lead Lethbridge towards their first goal. Not to be outdone, in the second period he took two more minor penalties... high sticking nd interference. Was Leppanen done though? Nope, in the third he decided to drop the gloves with Jack Wilson which he, of course, lost the bout. 11 minutes in the box, 19 on the ice, same effectiveness.

3 stars of the game

Another edition of the 3 stars, this time with the game between the Lethbridge Lions and Vancouver Whalers. It was a goalies game with a score of 2-1 for the Whalers.

3. Marcus Ohlsson - Vancouver Whalers - 1 goal, 3 shots, Marcus Ohllson scored his 7 goal of the season, it also was the game winner and a power play goal 5 min before the games end.

2. Jan Zacha - Vancouver Whalers - 1 goal, 5 shots, 1 hit, Vancouvers top center is always there when you need him. A lot of ice time for him and the equalizer.

1. Kasperi Braulin - Vancouver Whalers - 35 saves, 0.972 save %, he had a busy evening holding down the Lions offense, he did an excellent job only let pass one shot on a Lions power play.
