3-7

Game 46 marks the rematch between the Carolina kraken and the Vancouver Whalers. Carolina who was formerly known as Montreal Militia, and the season 49 SMJHL champions, were looking forward for another win against the Whalers. They are a team that is able to capitalize on any weakness demonstrated by their opponents.  As a former Canadian team, you can imagine the intense rivalry between the two clubs. On the other hand, the Whalers were eager for a revenge match and was ready to put everything on the line to become victorious. Whalers are coming into game 46 with a struggling 2 wins in 8 matches whereas the Kraken are coming with 4 wins.

Game Recap

Period 1

In less than 2 minutes into the first period, the Kraken are able to pull ahead by a one timer from the veteran winger, Ravyn Tedisko. The two-way forward hails from Czech Republic and has a knack for scoring goals.  Unfortunately for the Kraken, a penalty caused by Padraig Sarantez for tripping allowed a powerplay opportunity for the Whalers. Acknowledging that this was their chance, Cullen gray won the face-off and slid a quick pass to Marcus Ohlsson for a one-timer goal. Ohlsson is a quick giant on the ice standing at 6'3". He is also one of the finest playmakers in the SMJHL at the moment. Nearing the end of the period, Carolina deals another penalty, where the Whalers once again go on power play. This time, it was Jan Zacha who scored for the whalers to give them a one goal lead. The period ends and it doesn't look too good for the Kraken as they are playing to aggressive. The Whalers are 2 for 3 in powerplay so far in the game.

Period 2

The period resumes and the angry Wyatt Ruschkoff lands another penalty for the kraken for interference. The man is a freaking loose cannon in the game.  Tom Fiddler wins the faceoff in the Whalers Zone and gives a quick pass to Zbigniew Pokrywka. Unprepared, the Whalers defense trip on their skates and fall on their bums. Pokrywka, the two-way defender, may not be the greatest skater on ice but is able to take this chance due to the clumsiness of the Whalers and goes on a break away and fires a blazing slap shot from half-way and it rips through the Whalers Net. The kraken have equalized the game and now have the momentum. Cullen Gray of the Whalers who was furious at what happened,  lands a bone shivering hit on one of his opponents and Zacha takes a shot, but he misses the net. Gray takes the shot and he also misses the net. Don't know what the kraken defense is doing because Zacha takes another shoot and boom it goes in. Vancouver are now up by 2 goals. The rest of the period was an onslaught by the Whalers. Herry Morris IV was able to score one for the Kraken to give them hope but Bobcalf and Bieksa took it away from them by scoring a goal each. The period ends with 3 goals for Carolina vs 6 for Vancouver.

Period 3

The rest of the period was a slow one. Vancouver took on many penalties to piss off Carolina and they did just that.  The hot headed Padraig Sarantez decided to use profane language at the Whalers and told the officials to F*** Off and then started wasting time. This landed him a game misconduct as the Whalers got to his head. Shortly after, Jan Zacha was able to score another goal to close the coffin with his hattrick. This was a humiliating defeat for the former champs and the Whalers emerged victorious.

Key Factor

The key factor that led to the Whaler's victory is without a doubt their special teams. The whalers were 100% on their penalty kill as they were able to piss of their hot headed opponents, which prevented them from scoring goals. In turn, they were able to capitalize on 43% of their powerplay opportunities.

Comment 1 - The Great Scorer
It would be hard to talk about this game without talking about Jan Zacha from the Vancouver Whalers. Their first line center was everywhere in this game and recorded a point on every goal scored by his team in the night. He started with getting a primary assist on Marcus Ohlsson’s goal. After, he scored on the power play to end the second period. He scored a second to open the Vancouver offensive. He managed to get the primary assist on the three following goals of his team in the second period. He finished up the game by scoring the only goal in the third period, right before the period ended, to finish his hat trick.

Comment 2 - The Shorty
During the game today, something happened in the second period that’s a rare feat. Everything started when Wyatt Ruschkoff of the Carolina Kraken received a penalty for interference at 3:19 in the second period. This left the penalty kill team on the ice trying to defend the ice. The squad is composed of Tom Fiddler, Ravyn Tedisko, Kaspars Claude and Zbigniew Pokrywka on the first unit. Tom Fiddler won the face off against Jan Zacha and passed to Ravyn Tedisko who was able to carry it to the Whalers zone, successfully shaving some minutes. Tedisko passed to Pokrywka who decided to take a shot. Unbelievable for many, the shot beat Kasperi Braulin. This is how Pokrywka managed to get a short handed goal in the game!

Comment 3 - The Power Play
The Power Play of the Vancouver Whalers was on fire today, despite a small hiccup that happened in the second, which I already commented about. They managed to score on 3 of their 7 attempt which was good for a 42.86% success rate. Two of those goals were in the first period, where they had 3 power play. To their defense, the last penalty came at 19:16 so they had less than a minute to score. The last goal they had on the power play came in the second period where they had three opportunity again. The last opportunity was at the middle of the third where Padraig Sarantez was ejected for Abuse of Officials.

A tale of two goalies:

Another tough game for Carolina’s starter Nolan McMahon here. The talented young netminder was far from playing at his peak level here, letting in 4 goals on 12 shots before being pulled in the second period and being replaced by Mike Hroch. Hroch fared somewhat better, saving 13 of the 16 shots he faced but was still not at the level he should have been if Carolina were to win this one.

At he other end of the ice, Kasperi Braun did what was required of him, Saving 22 of 25 shots for a .880 save percentage. Not a record setting number at any rate, but certainly enough to get the win that Vancouver needed in a free-wheeling, offensive game.

High Score

wow, you don't see hockey like that a lot anymore, it was almost like a good old fashioned 80s game or something out of EA sports! The goals just kept coming in the second with six goals between the two teams. Vancouver just kept lighting the lamp and ended up with 7 goals. Carolina must be ashamed of how their defense and their goalie failed them, and will need to regroup after that one for awhile. I imagine their coach had angry works in the locker room, while Vancouver must be celebrating how strong their offense is. They will be riding the momentum from this win for many games to come.

3 Stars of the game

3. Zbigniew Pokrywka - Carolina Kraken - 1 goal, 1 assist, +2, 2 hits, 3 shot blocked
Zbigniew Pokrywka scored a shorthanded goal for the tie early in the second period. And was fighting the hole game. He was one of the few Kraken player that finished the game with a positive +/-. A solid pick for the 3rd star.

2. Cullen Gray - Vancouver Whalers - 1 goal, 3 assist, +2, 2 hits, 5 shots
Cullen was on the 4th line for this game with very limited ice time, but for the reason he also was on the 2nd power play unit he got a lot of ice time there. You could think that he would profit from them, but 3 points from 4 he made by even strength and only one at the power play. Very impressive.

1. Jan Zacha - Vancouver Whalers - 3 goals, 4 assists, +2, 8 shots, 1 shoot blocked,
What a night for Jan Zacha, he had his stick on every important play of the game. He got a point on every goal and scored a hat trick himself. He destroyed the Kraken.
