PGS 50: Game 1 - Carolina vs Colorado
#1

Welcome everyone to the first game of the season in the SMJHL. Today, we will see the Colorado Raptors host the newly branded team of the Carolina Kraken. Let’s head straight on into the first period.

First Period:
The first period started with a bang for the home team. The Colorado Raptors were able to capitalize on a tripping penalty assigned to Padraig Sarantez from the Carolina Kraken after Sarantez tripped one of their players. The first goal was scored by Vorian Atreides, helped by Daniel Kuster and Calogero Crudelli barely six seconds after the start of the penalty. A few seconds later, Denver Wolfe nets the second goals of the Colorado Raptors, helped by Hariken Urawa and Vorian Atreides. Toward the end of the period, the Carolina Kraken finally woke up and cut the lead in half when Heikki Jaakola beat Emiko Spector on a pass by Hans Schweinsteiger. But the Raptors were quick to gain it back when Georgy Gorbachenko chased Nolan McMahon out of the game on assists by Anthony Archer and Ja’Aj Coitus-Wagg.

Second Period:
In the second Period, it’s still the Colorado Raptors that opened the scoring in the twenty minutes. At seven minutes and thirty-eights seconds, Henrik Lekberg Osterman scored on assists from Heat Siecker and the second assists of Vorian Atreistes, beating Mike Hroch who took over Nolan McMahon in the first. After, it’s the Carolina Kraken that took back the period. They scored their second at twelve minutes on a goal from Tom Fiddler, assisted by Ravyn Tedisko. Their second of the period is a gem from Alexandre Watcher assisted by Jaguar Johnson and Kaspars Claude.

Third Period:
Nothing really exciting came from the last period of the game, but the penalty assigned to Padraig Sarantez soon before the six minutes mark. However, the Colorado Raptors were unable to capitalize on the penalty and the score remained 4-3. Fortunately for them, the 4-3 was in their favor so It wasn’t such a big deal even if they were unable to score.

The Three Stars of the game are the following:
The Third star of the game is Denver Wolfe from the Colorado Raptors. Denver had one goal on one shot as well as two shot blocked during the game.
The Second star of the game is Henrik Lekberg Osterman from the Colorado Raports. Henrik had the goal winning goal on his three shot as well as landing one solid hit in the game.

Plug of the Game

This season's first POTG belongs to the 3rd pairing defense of the Carolina Kraken, and more specifically Wyatt Ruschkoff. Ruschkoff plays an almost entirely defensive-defender role of the Kraken team, but still posted a -1 rating in the first game of the season. He also sacrificed his body in a myriad of ways, throwing three hits and blocking a shot. All of this in less than 18 minutes of ice time, which places him among the lowest of anyone on both of the teams... for defensemen, at least. Including forwards, this still ranks him in the upper half. Congrats to Ruschkoff for this prestigious award.

The Champions new shining stars I

Mike Hroch is the new rookie goalie of the Carolina Kraken. And he got his feet wet today. While nobody expected that Mike Hroch would get some playing time he had to replace Nolan McMahon at the end of the 1st period. And he did a fantastic job in his first game. He stopped 17 of the 18 shots he got on the net. That was a very promising start for his career and showed everyone that he could get one of the best. His performance should have brought him a 3 star nomination, but he got screwed up. Maybe he get it next time.

The Champions new shining stars II

The other new rookie in Carolinas line up was Alexander Wachter. He is one of the new shining star that entered the league in the SMJHL draft. The two way forward got some ice time on the 4th line and did the very best thing with his limited ice time. One shot one goal, 100% efficient. Finished the game with a positive +/- of +2. That is what you not expected but hoped from your rookie. If he could keep it up he probably is going to surprise a lot of people out there and could fill his stock for the SHL draft.

Solid Special Teams
While the Carolina Kraken were not given any opportunities on the PP, they went 1 for 2 on the PK, surrendering the first goal of the game to Atreides of the Raptors just 6 seconds into the kill. On their second kill of the game, they did not allow any shots to get to the net. A rocky start proved fatal on the special teams for the Kraken as they only allowed 1 shot on goal in over 2 minutes of being shorthanded. The Raptors went on to being one of the top teams on the power play,m so the Kraken should hold their heads high with this performance.

Top Time Management
Heikki Jaakola proves the be the one who can do the most with a limited amount of icetime. When he was on the ice he was always working, tallying 1 goal and 5 shots in under 8 minutes of play, in addition to going 50% on faceoffs. He finished with a +2 on the night, and ended up skating 15 seconds on the penalty kill. If you want more icetime, his play was a great way to prove he could handle it and was rewarded as the season went on, increasing his average time on ice to around 12 minutes.

Defensive 3 stars of the game
1- Zbigniew Pokrywka: Pokrywka was ready to fire in his first game of the season, laying out 6 hits and managing to block 6 shots while finishing with a +1 on the night in 20 minutes of icetime

2- Kaspars Claude: Claude lead the Kraken in icetime in the game and while he wasnt quite as physical as Pokrywka, he was still a major on ice presence with 2 shot blocks and a hit, with 50 seconds on the PK

3- Jake Peralta: While the rest of his team was offensive, Peralta focused on shutting down the Kraken and not worrying about his offensive numbers, putting up 2 hits and 1 shot block
