Game 71: Carolina @ Detroit

CAROLINA KRAKEN (3) - DETROIT FALCONS (5)

Three Stars:

3. Josh Driver

2. Jagger Fouquette

1. Savoli Tankovic

SUMMARY

An important game early in the season. Detroit and Montreal were rivals for decades in the SMJHL, but the rebrand and relocation of an old enemy could threaten to extinguish that spark. Thankfully this doesn’t appear to be the case so far.

Historically the Detroit Falcons had been at odds with the Montreal Militia for many a season, stretching back to the days of the Montreal Impact. Classic and hard fought series such as the S31 Detroit reverse sweep had built an atmosphere between the two teams that was hard to replicate by any other teams in the SMJHL, or SHL for that matter.

You can bet that this high octane game was at least partly caused by that bitter past rivalry. Both teams were willing to leave it all on the ice, as they weren’t afraid to finish their checks and spill blood, sweat and tears in order to try and get the maximum points from the game.

Period 1:

To say this was all Detroit would be a hell of an understatement. Scoring 4 goals in the opening 20 is certainly some way to show your intent, and goals from Tankovic and Abioye, and two from Fouquette made for a demoralising first period for Carolina. The shot numbers were only two apart but Detroit were much more successful at finishing off their attacks, and so built up an early dominant scoreline.

Period 2:

Here’s where the comeback began. Important goals in the game’s second period from Bobby and Tevisko worked to close the gap somewhat and at least put the pressure on Detroit in some way; its needless to say that 4-2 isnt a perfect scoreline but it’s certainly better than 4-0. Carolina were finally able to crack Thompson and get some support in net from Hroch to stop the flow of goals despite being outshot again.

Period 3:

A cagey final period, Detroit managed to score 8 minutes in and really put the game out of reach. Carolina’s powerplay goal later that period will do little to ease the pain of knowing that were they to have scored the first goal of the period and closed the gap to a single goal, momentum could have been very different. As it was, Tankovic scored his second goal in a first star performance and help lead his side to a morale boosting win over a dangerous opponent.

In this game, the Carolina Kraken were visiting the Detroit Falcons. In the first period, the Detroit Falcons were the team that put the most pucks on the net with 10. On those 10, four of them were successful, putting the Detroit Falcons with a comfortable lead. In the first 20, the Carolina Kraken were only able to put 8, none of them successful. In the second period, the Detroit Falcons were still pretty successful with 15 shots on net, but didn’t score on any of them. The Kraken on their side had 12 shots, which netted 2 of them, cutting the lead of the Falcons in half. In the third, both teams were able to score once, the kraken on 10 shots and the Falcons on 11 shots.

What an interesting match this was. These two teams previously faced off in the s49 SMJHL playoffs. Carolina Kraken at that time was known as Montreal Militia, who ended up winning the Cup. As you can tell, the Detroit Falcons were humiliated in the series. They weren't swept but they did suffer a 4-1 defeat. The falcons were not looking to repeat the same mistake this time around. The haunting of their past, made them eager to claim the throne in this game. Right of the bat in the first period, the falcons go up 4-0. They weren't playing around but things cooled of in the other periods as the Carolina were on momentum with 3 back to back goals. Unfortunately, the game still ended in the defeat of the former champs, 3-5. The dark horse of the match was part of the losing team. His name is none other than Padraig Sarantez, the Irishman. Sarantez is a two-way defenseman, standing at 6'6". He does not shy away from playing the dirty aspect of hockey and is also one of the leaders in penalty minutes. In this game alone, Sarantez was part of every contribution for the krakens. He had 3 points, was a +1, and had a hit and SB to complement his validity as the dark horse. If Sarantez continues to play this way, he might become one of the best defenseman in the SMJHL.

Plug of the Game:

Week three of our series coverage lands in Carolina, where one of their top tier defenders takes home the title this week. Zbigniew Pokrywka plays on the top pairing for the Kraken, but showed little promise in this today's game. He registered 0 points, which matches nicely with his -2 rating. Their starting goaltender was pulled in the first period, as the game quickly got out of hand. The second period showed no remorse, as Zbigniew Pokrywka took an interference call just past the midway point of the period, but luckily Detroit was not able to capitalize on the man advantage.

Defensive 3 stars

1- Hans Schweinsteiger: With under 20 minutes of icetime, Hans was able to block 3 shots, lay a hit and still finish with a +1 on the night in an 8 goal game
2- Wyatt Ruschkoff: Ruschkoff was a presence on the ice, and found himself on the ice for 2:30 of PK time. 2 each for hits and blocks means he may have a bruise or two after this one
3- Skao Anazibf: A solid night for the Falcon forward, with over 5 minutes of PP time, 1 hit and 2 blocks, with another 17 minutes of full strength

Strong Start

The Detroit Falcons were able to tally 4 goals in the opening frame of this game, a lead that the Kraken could not overcome in the end. An early powerplay allowed the Falcons to capitalize in the first 4 minutes of the game, it wasn't until the last 3 minutes that the Falcons found their groove and turned on the jets and scored 3 goals in just over a minute. It was Savoli Tankovic who ended up with the game winner after the Kraken tried to mount an offensive in the remaining time but came up short with 3 goals.

Crowded Box

The Carolina Kraken were feeling a little too frisky throughout this game as they had 3 penalties in the first, 2 in the second and 1 to round out the third period. It definitely added a little extra challenge being down to four skaters 6 times in a night. The Falcons scored on 2 of their 6 opportunities, while Carolina managed to score a goal on their only chance on the power play. Both teams seemed to struggle with their special teams performances, but the teams needed to focus on staying out of the box, only the Falcons succeeded there.

3 Stars of the game

Let's have a look at our 3 stars of the game and their performance

3. Josh Driver - Detroit Falcons - 2 Assists, +2, 4 shots, his 2 assists haven't been really passes. They have been shots with a rebound that his teammates could send home.

2. Jagger Fouquette - Detroit Falcons - 2 goals, +1, 5 shots, Jagger opened the scoring with a power play goal and put the Falcons up 3-0 with his second goal in the 1st period. Quite a good game and worth a nomination.

1. Savoli Tankovic- Detroit Falcons - 2 goals, 1 assist,+2, 4 shots, Tankovic had a great game, he scored the game winner and stopped the comeback of the Kraken with his second goal.

Breaking point of the game

Let us call this the magic minute. The Detroit Falcons had such a minute +3 seconds in that game. The clock stopped at 17:43 and Izem Abioye just gave his team a 2-0 lead with another power play goal. It took the Falcons only 26 seconds more to go up 3-0 on a goal by Jagger Fouquette. After this goal a frustrated Nolan McMahon stormed out of the net and Mike Horch replaced him. The Falcons had no mercy with the new goalie and put the puck in on a rebound after the first shot on goal, all that just 37 second after the last goal. You don't see often 3 goals in a little bit more than a minute in hockey.
