S50: PGS Game 74: STL VS HFX
#1

Scarecrows @ raiders
3-4 OT

1st period recap

Early on in the first it seems, while more physical, the Scarecrows were on the defensive. Leading the way in hits with five in the first minute, but it would be Halifax taking an early lead in shots, being rewarded by Atlas Rush's 4th of the season just under 2 minutes in. A bad hooking penalty just after the ensuing faceoff by the Raider's Indigo Trevino would give St. Louis the chance to answer back in a hurry. Lucky for them good early defence and solid puck management/area denial lead to only one shorthanded chance against. After 4 minutes without either team recording a shot who else but Atlas Rush to pick up his second of the night and this on just Halifax's 4th shot on goal, going up 2-0. After this, the Scarecrows would start to come alive, getting their chances in. Both teams would get their shots in for the next 10 minutes or so but Biz Nasty and Elizabeth Doyle would prove up to the task. St. Louis would be rewarded as Mattie Brunton would put them on the board with his 5th of the year just before the 17 minute mark. Under a minute later, in spite of overzealous rookie Ruslan Zaporozhets' best efforts, Halifax's Haley Knight would put the Raiders up 3-1 to close out the first.

Shots: 10-9 in favor of Halifax

2nd period recap

The second would see St. Louis, playing from behind but with plenty of hockey left, testing Halifax early and often with 4 of their 11 shots of the period coming around a minute in. The next minute would see Halifax take a turn as the see saw would start teetering. By 5 minutes in the Raiders would have 5 of their 11 of the period blocked by Doyle. The next 5 would be a goaltending duel as the teams couldn't get anything done. Suddenly, in a blur of determination mixed with ineptitude, would see the Scarecrow's 3rd line set up with big Ukrainian winger Ruslan parking his Cossack ass in front of Biz Nasty and be rewarded with no less than 1 deflection (wide of the net) and 3 other whacks at the loose puck (ALL wide of the net) before hitting pay dirt, his 7th, all inside of a 10 second stretch. This would bring them to within 1. 3 minutes later, and with only a couple more shots on goal, Barrett Blackwood would knot things up at 3 with his 7th of the year at half way through the second. The rest of the period would move along quickly but the goalies would both be up to the task now. Only an interference penalty by Halifax's fantastic finn Jaakko Jarvinen near the end of it to shift momentum into the Scarecrows favor going into the third.

Shots: 11 each

3rd period recap

In the third, St. Louis would come out firing again but Biz was Nasty with the glove and wouldn't let a thing in. The period would move along quickly with both teams killing a penalty each and both goalies proving more than up to the task. but we would get no score to break the 3-3 tie, leading us to overtime.

Shots: 13-9 in favor of Halifax.

Overtime recap

The puck would drop, each team playing with 4 skaters and the dance would begin. First the Raiders would come in Atlas Rush who had the hot hand earlier would have his attempt blocked while Timmo Kyllonen would miss the net before an icing by Aron Hernadivic would put an end to the sortee. Karl Krashwagen would get a shot after the ensuing faceoff but have it blocked too. After some jockeying by both teams, Jakub Bruchevski would dash in but Biz Nasty would close the 5 hole and smother said chance. In spite of a Scarecrows faceoff win, Atlas would Rush down the ice for a flurry of chances nothing hitting home. With the St. Louis defence scrambling however, Halifax's FR Finn-Rhys would put one by Elizabeth Doyle to end this 2 minute overtime in a win for the Raiders.

Shots: 1 each

Final stats:
Shots: 34-31 Raiders

Plug of the Game:

Once again, we're going to see the winning team take home the final POTG episode this week. Halifax's Indigo Trevino is a depth player, and for good reason, playing on their third forward unit. However, instead of spreading out his messiness throughout the game, Trevino decided to get it all out of the way earlier. Halifax took an early 1-0 lead, but litrally 1 second after that happened, Trevino took a hooking penalty off the ensuing faceoff. Later in the first, he took a slashing penalty which led to the Scarecrows getting on the board, cutting the lead to 2-1. Trevino ended with 0 points and -2 rating, including 4 shots (all missed the net) and two hits.
