Synopsis
This was the second matchup between the Outlaws and the Knights this season. Kelowna took the first game 3-2 in Anaheim in a low scoring affair. In Kelowna, the young Outlaws would have to play a perfect game to stay in it till the end.

Period 1
The first period got off to a lightning start, with Anaheim taking a lead at 3:11 off the powerplay from Leonid Kofix; his fourth of the season. Ten minutes later, the Knights would tie things up, Ryan Shepard, breaking up a play and feeding Raque Catillo Gutierrez on a breakaway that Patrick Niederreiter had no chance on. A late penalty to Prince Devitt, his second of the game, gave the Outlaws yet another powerplay goal, this time from Kevin Robinson’s stick. However, the lead was shortlived as Andrey Barbashev II would send the teams back to their respective locker room all tied up.

Period 2
The second period was a lot calmer in action, even if both teams shot 10 times at the net each. A few penalties on either side did not result in any additional goals. The deadlock was finally broken by Ivan Maximus off a rebound, which Knights goaltender, Luca Del Vecchio, had no chance to stop. With the Outlaws leading 3-2 after two period, and both teams playing an intense game, the fans in the arena would have their money’s worth in the third.

Period 3
It took a mere 34 seconds for things to get started, as Ryan Shepard put his own rebound past Niederreiter to tie things up and plenty to play. With the Outlaws visibly shaken, the Knights dictated the tempo of the period outshooting Anaheim 12-6. Mid way through the period, Gordon Bombay would put the Knights up by one, and two minutes later, Tah Puhcheese would look to close the game by putting the Kelowna ahead 5-3 with 8 minutes left.
However, the Outlaws got back in the game and consistently pressured the weaker 2nd defensive pairing of the Knights into making mistakes. Gunnar Petrov would cut the lead in half at 14:35 and Rath mcleod would tie things up 72 seconds later. With both teams looking visibly drained, the action slowed down and the game would head to overtime.

Overtime
Both teams were still visibly tired come overtime and for the whole 5 minutes only Anaheim managed a meager 2 shots on net. With no goals there, the game would end in the shootout.

Shootout
In what would be an almost comical shootout, both goalies put on a clinic, stopping the first 6 shooters together. The 7th shooter, Jan Silber would hit the post and the puck rebound off the back of Del Vecchio and into the net to put the Outlaws in the drivers’ seat. Simon LeBlanc had to score to keep the shootout going but Niederreiter was easily able to bounce it away.
The Outlaws would go back home from Kelowna with two points in the bank and the Knights got themselves a well deserved extra point.

What a Game

This was a game that had it all and had tons of scoring, not a dull moment. It was back and forth, all the fans were holding their breath and nobody knew which way the game would go. Two goals for each team in the first, a second period lead for Anaheim, but then Kelowna came out into the third with three goals and looked to have the game locked down. It was insane though, Anaheim managed to come back and force overtime. It would be decided by a shootout, and the Outlaws were able to win that and show true fighting spirit. It was a brave come back and a game that will go down as a great one.

3 Stars - Comment 1

1. Ryan Shepard  Knights  Ryan Shepard had an incredible 1 goal, 2 assist, 1 hit, and went 18/33 on faceoffs off of 23 minutes played on the ice. All of Shepard's point were very crucial in this high scoring close match with his goal being in the first 40 seconds of the 3rd period that would bring Knights back into the game.

2. Gunnar Petrov  Outlaws Gunnar Petrov in just 15 minutes of play boasted a stat line of 1 goal, 1 assist, 3 hits, and 1 shot blocked. Gunnar's only goal of the game was critical in Anaheim's victory as it came very late in the 3rd period when they were down by 2 scores.

3. Raquel Castillo Gutierrez  Knights Raquel Castillo Gutierrez would also play 23 minutes for the Knights and contributed with 1 goal, 1 assist, and 1 hit. Oddly enough both of Gutierrez's points came with the help of Ryan Shepard.

The Power Play - Comment 2

The power play unit of the Anaheim Outlaws was great tonight, with them scoring on 2 off of their 5 attempts which is a solid 40% success rate. Both of those goals would happen in the first period where there was a total of 3 penalties committed by Kelowna. The last two penalties would happen in the 2nd and 3rd periods but like mentioned the powerplay unit wasn't able to score during either of those opportunities. In a high scoring close match such as this one the success of the powerplay was crucial to be able to keep up with Kelowna.

High Scoring Game - Comment 3

In hockey you don't see many games where both teams score so much as tonight with Anaheim scoring 6 and Kelowna with 5. Both teams offenses exploded in the first and 3rd periods with 9 out of the 11 goals being scored in those 2 periods off of just 37 shot attempts which results in a shot percentage of 24%. The last two would be scored by Anaheim with one happening in the 2nd and the last being the game winning goal in the shootout. Each team's coach must have felt equally proud of their offense and disappointed with their defense.
