S50 PT #4 - Skills Competition
#61

Written Option #1: For one of the above competitions, craft your ideal field of 4 contestants to compete in the challenge. Make your case as to why you're choosing these 4 to represent the elitest of the elite in this skill right now. (150+ words)

Accurate shot - I looked at the skaters who had the best shooting percentage this season in the SHL with at least 150 shots under their belts.  The top three players were, Mika Kandinsky (162 shots - 14.81%), Gabriel Wong (150 shots - 14.67%), Piotr Czerkawski (157 shots - 13.94%) and Noah Konn (210 shot - 12.86%). These four players are all having incredible seasons right now, they are all in the top 6 overall point leaders each one of them averaging over a point per game. Looking at the top ten in shooting percentage, you'll only see Kandinsky and Wong listed there, but I wanted to take into account the amount of shots that the players are actually taking. The league leader in shots right now is at 213 shots, so I figured using 150 as a starting point would allow the players who are taking the most accurate shots and a lot of them. Who would win this competition? I'd have to say my favourites would be Kandinsky and Czerkawski, giving the still edge to Piotr over the rookie of the year candidate.

I would pick Mike Izzy to win fastest skater, but realistically it would be a bit of a tossup. In the instance where we have dozens of players across the league at a top level then I think you would want to go with experience and Izzy seems to be a head above most of the others when it comes down to this.
Aside from the pure vegas like betting reasons for why I think he would succeed at this you can also dig into player psyche - what makes a player tick and how to expand off that to make accurate predictions. I think that Izzy has been regarded as the best or one of the best players in the league for the last long while. He has the highest max TPE as far as I know of from the current era and has won multiple championships. Simply put, this guy wins so don't bet against him.

I'm going to go with the slight underdog here with Austin Roenick bringing home the award for most accurate shot. Tor Tuck and Jimmy Slothface are putting up great numbers this year, but I'd like to see the rookie give them a real run for their money. Without the pressure of defensemen in your face I think Roenick will be able to really show the older guys what he's got. These skills competitions are always a bit of a crap shoot, but that's why I like the odds here. He's put up a 19 goals on 125 shots giving him a 15.20% conversion which is near the top of the league in total and in the top 3 of those with more than 100 shots on the season. And who wouldn't want to see a rookie win a skills competition? It's SHL headline worthy conversation and can help keep the other young players interested and someone to chase after.

I, Monkey D. Luffy, am 1 of the elite forwards in this elite league called the SHL and I am be competing in every event the skills competition has to offer. I know that this is not somewhat of the norm but I, Monkey D. Luffy, am 1 of the elite forwards. So I am gonna be crushing this entire skills competition and as I, Monkey. D Luffy, am 1 of the elites I will be bringing home the gold for each and every single event. There is nothing I, Monkey D. Luffy, 1 am the elite 4 of this pokemon league can't accomplish and I'll even be in net and stop all the other "elite players" of this league. It's gonna be an easy experience. I used to be humble but now that I, Monkey D. Luffy, am 1 of the elites I have to be less humble and honk on the opposition.

Being a young goalie, of course I will take a gander at predicting the best four contestants for the Best Shootout Goalie. While it may be easy to simply look at the top save percentages in these situations, it's also important to take into factor which goalie faced the most quality chances, and how they answered those challenges. Following that line of thinking, it's hard to not go with a full-Eastern Conference line-up for this skills competition, wouldn't you think?

Having said that, my first contestant would be Benjamin Blue @BoucherFan12, of the Tampa Bay Barracuda. Blue is having a tremendous season in the mid-Floridian city, being a definite factor as to why his team is currently pointing in second position in a very ferocious Eastern Conference. While he's sixth in the league in PSSv%, he's also had to face the most out of anyone in the top 10 - which is an indicator on how steady he has been in all situations this season.

The second goalie I would see in this competition would be Beaujeaux Biscuits @.bojo, of the West Kendall Platoon. I've already stated my elation for his style, as a stand-up goalie, and his very high PSSv%, coupled with a strong Sv%, means that he's the real deal. Imagine stopping four penalty shot out of five in the regular season, while doing kick saves and generally imposing his will on the shooters. Immense.

Another goalie that has a high PSSv% and general Sv% is Geezus Kryyst @Narconis, of the Hamilton Steelhawks. While he hasn't had to face as many penalty shots as the other two contenstants I've chosen so far, Kryyst has been rock-solid for the small Ontarian city in all situations thus far this season, even helping them reach a playoff berth after a disappointing elimination last season.

I'm highly conflicted for my last contestant, as I feel there are still two goalies that deserve a shot at this skills competition. The first, Harry Carpet @Carpy48 of the Toronto North Stars, is having a tremendous season in the Ontarian capital, who has seen them fight for a playoff spot until the very end - all the while he's received the most shots in the league so far. His PSSv% is a bit inflated since he only had to save the three penalty shots that came his way, but it can't be argued that he has deserved a mention in this competition. The second, Tibuk Soonika @chetib of the Chicago Syndicate, is struggling a bit more in the Sv% category, but is looking regal in penalty shot situations. He can also be argued to be a good reason as to why Chicago is still in the conversation for the fifth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

So I don't have a choice... I'll have to include them both! Nowhere in the rules am I unallowed to give five spots! NOWHERE!

As soon as Chicago Syndicate's forward, Jack Kennedy, heard word that he would be representing his team in the "Most Accurate Shot Contest" at this season's Simulation Hockey League's All-Star Game the nerves set in right away. Such a high stakes and high pressure environment. Still, an honour to be nominated none the less. With little time to prepare, he took to training right away. He got his net out of the garage, strapped the old shooter tutor to its posts, set the plexi glass sheet at the designated distance, and let a bucket full of pucks rip. He decided to train by knocking the bottom to targets out before moving to the top cheeses. Kennedy got his line mates to practice feeding the pucks to his sweet spot, and he worked on getting the pucks away as quick as possible, without sacrificing accuracy. With the contest looming days away he had gotten pretty good at going four for four, but with only one chance to get it done, in front of 20 000 fans, who knows how it will go down.

Well now, they have decided that I, Flash Gordon, Savior of the universe, should participate in one of the skill competitions. They gave me the option of shooting or skating. Why not one for hits or for defensively shutting down all the bad guys trying to score on my goalie? I guess I would have to be in the fastest skater one, as I am decently quick on my feet. They told me no antics like at the gala. So I had to put my one piece red speedo away. Damn officials always making my dreams fall apart. Anywho, I did what I do best and skated my ass off. The gun went off and I was off. good start so far, not surprising as I am a hero after all. I start to round the first turn and that is where the shit hit the fan. I fell. Right into the ref watching the skaters. Apparently he was evil and I was drawn to attack him. I was escorted out of the rink and out the back door to the ally. I was told do not bother showing up next time. Figures. Vanquish evil and still get kicked to the curb.

Option 2

Every year when the skills comp comes around my money is always on mike izzy a complete all around offensive wizard who shows up bringing his all every night. Weather fastest skater most accurate shot hardest shot breakaway relay it just doesn't matter Mr. izzy checks the box on every type of skill there is. My pick however would have to be most accurate shot shooting accuracy as well as the other comp im pretty certain he will win the puckhandling challenge require a ton of skill to excell amognst your peers in and izzy just drips skill. Im also gonna bet on izzy to take home the all star game mvp he will be playing with players close to his skill level and has a real chance to go off and do some special things. From what i hear he does not get to hyped for these type of events but i think if he took it serious he could have a truly unforgettable night.

My player was selected for most accurate shot. With a current shot percentage of 0.00% I figure the league just wanted a few scrub Defensemen to show off how good the Forwards are. But my man is going all out, first stop, the dollar store for some of those cheap ceramic plates. A lot more focused training on the corners and the five hole in practice and not only that, some long range clappers from the blue line. Clearly accuracy isn't a stat you can improve overnight, but shooting at plates, apples, balls, etc does help get targeting down and in the end that's how you succeed. I mean its not like you need to run a 50 yard dash or skate a shuttle run and then go shoot the puck. You're standing still and flicking your wrist and using your hips. So that's what he is doing, practicing shooting stuff in the net so he can put the puck in the net in the right spots and not be a laughing stock on NBCSN.

For most accurate shot I decided to look at a variety of top lists for various stats to see who was ranking highly in multiple parts of shot taking. First obvious look was at shooting percentage and then using that to see if it corresponded to any other lists. At first, I looked at amount of shots taken since a high level of shots taken plus a high shooting percentage would indicate a high level of skill yet it seems every person in the top ten for shooting percentage were not in the top ten of shots taken. So, I then moved on to goals which finally produced my first candidate Mika Kandinsky who is currently second in the league for goals scored at 24 and 10th in the league for shooting percentage at 14.2%. The next candidate this methodology produced was Gabriel Wong who is 4th in the league with 22 goals scored and 9th in the league with shooting percentage with a 14.29%. After that I just gave up and picked shooting percentage with Ostap Maksimov at 18.18% and Tony Ford behind him with a 16.67%.

For this year’s most accurate shot contest, I’m going to mix it up from the sort of superstar goal scorers we normally see fill this competition. Instead, it’s going to be a mix of the future of the league and some veteran forces having outstanding seasons. All four finalists balance scoring production with a high level of efficiency in their shots.

First, we’ll go with the unquestionable consensus rookie of the year, Mika Kandinsky. He’s put up 24 goals on 14.2% shooting, making him a natural fit for this competition.

Second, West Kendall’s Gabriel Wong has been a standout while the Platoon wait for reinforcements. He’s put 22 pucks behind the opposing goalie on only 154 shots (14.29%), good for a new career high.

Third, the only defenseman in the competition, is Hamilton’s Tig Murphy. The sixth year pro has been a revolution, potting 17 goals this season from the point, by far a career high. His 13.71% conversion rate is also the second highest of his career.

Finally, the possibly surprising member of this year’s competition, will be Jimmy Slothface. NOLA’s first ever draft pick has only gotten better each year of his career. This year, he’s scored 19 times with a strong shooting percentage (14.07%), surrounded by the old fucks of the Specters.
This competition would be wild, for sure. Any of these four could take the win home. If I had to pick a winner, I think Murphy would edge out the rookie darling Kandinsky to take the W.

Nick Brain would gladly step up for the Most Accurate Shot Competition. Nick would prefer wristers only, as he has a peculiar wrist shot, one that takes a sharp last-second rise into the top corner that surprises goaltenders and has been perfected over the years through constant practise and in-game repetition. However, Nick has a respectable slap shot too and wouldn't be out of place if it were slappers only.

Nick's practise would be a mix of old-school and new-school methods. The Winnipeg Jets have high-class training facilities with motion sensor equipment and analytics methods designed to study and improve your form in skating/shooting/pokechecking/etc, but sometimes the old method of shooting a tennis ball on concrete against heavily pock-marked garage door is best.

As for how the competition would go: Nick wouldn't be able to match or surpass the 10+ year veterans who are at their peak in terms of shooting accuracy and skill, but hes developing, and against other younger stars that haven't fully hit their prime yet, Nick may very well come out on top........
