PGS S50: Game 94 Carolina Krake - Anahaim Outlaws
#1

Kraken Carolina Kraken vs. Anaheim Outlaws Outlaws

GAME LINK

Carolina Kraken went into this game with a lot of anger down the road, coming into the game after a heavy beat down from the Armada 6-0. They now have lost 2 in row and 3 out of their last 4 games. On the other side we have the Anaheim Outlows, they just beat the Falcons and won 5 out of their last 6 games.

1st Period:
Carolina got the first shot of the game, but Anaheim scored first, Gunnar Petrov brought the early lead for his team after 1:33. He scored with the first shoot on the net after an assist from Jacob Riley. The next few minutes the Krakens did everything to get the tie, but Patrick Niederreiter was always there to stop them. Anaheim got stronger after the time past the 10 min mark and they took over the game. But also Carolinas goalie Nolan McMahon was getting better and didn't let pass another shoot.

2nd Period:
Anaheim was dominating the 2nd period as well. It seems that the Carolina Kraken did get a foot back in to the game. They good outshoot with 4-9. The only Kraken that played an acceptable game was Nolan McMahon alone. But at 15:48 he got beat again by shoot from Nick Connolly. Nick retrieved the puck in the own zone, a nice double pass with Ursin Zimmermann brought him some open room. Skating down the board to score the goal for the 2-0 lead.

3rd period:
Anaheim just put in the next gear. It looked like they have been playing against a team that is afraid of everything. They dominated the last period on a very easy way, don't know if it was because they have been so good or the Kraken just found out that they don't have a chance today. Anaheim won the shoots battle 18-6! At 5:39 Anaheim scored another goal to made it 3-0. John Hawke profited from a bad line change from the Kraken. Ursin Zimmermann saw that they are all going to change and send a pass to Jacob Riley, he passed to John Hawke how scored the goal. Nearly to the end, Phineas Gold brought Carolina on the score sheet. At 17:36 he was set up by Conrad Farell and Booby Lane.

3 Stars - Comment 1

1. Gunnar Petrov  Outlaws  Gunnar Petrov was the star of the game with a stat line of 1 goal, and 3 hits off of just 16 minutes of play on the ice with 8 of those minutes being during the powerplay. Petrov was able to get the first score of the game, helping his team gain momentum early on to propel them to a 3-1 victory.

2. Ursin Zimmerman  Outlaws  With 21 minutes on the ice, Ursin Zimmerman was able to rack up a stat line of 2 assist, 1 hit, and 1 shot blocked. Zimmerman played great team play with those 2 assist that came in the 2nd and 3rd periods.

3. Nick Connolly  Outlaws Nick Connolly was able to achieve a stat line of 1 goal, 1 hit, and 2/2 on FOs off of his 20 minutes of play. His only goal of the game was in the 2nd period off of a great pass by Ursin Zimmerman which put Anaheim in a comfortable 2 score lead.

Weak Power Play or Strong Penalty Kill? - Comment 2

The penalty kill units of both teams definitely shined today with neither team able to score of off a combined 10 powerplays. Anaheim won this game 3-1 but they are in need of some serious refining of their powerplay unit if they are going to win more games as they put up a very disappointing performance tonight with 0 goals in all 8 of their powerplays. Carolina's powerplay unit wasn't much better with 0 goals in 2 powerplays but at least their penalty kill unit can raise their heads high knowing they were able to stop Anaheim from scoring once during the powerplay.

WC: 103

4th Star of the Game - Comment 3

Someone who played great tonight but unfortunately wasn't able to make today's 3 stars was Anaheim's Jacob Riley. Jacob Riley was only able to put up 2 assist in 16 minutes, but that doesn't reflect the great defense he played in those minutes that helped keep Carolina to only 1 goal. Riley had superb positioning tonight on the ice which would completely stop the offenses momentum with his countless pass interceptions. He also orchestrated many offensive pushes that lead to 2/3 of Anaheim's scores. He might not have had the greatest stat line at the end of it all but is someone who should be appreciated for his efforts on both end of the court.

Defensive 3 stars

1- Henrik Sapotchik: 2 Blocks and 2 hits with a +1 on the night made Sapotchik an easy choice for the first defensive star of the game, even with just 16 minutes of play time.
2- Alex Petrenko: With over a 3rd of his time on ice spent on the powerplay, Petrenko managed to lay out 3 hits and a shot block. A strong outing for the young defenseman
3- Rath McLeod: A strong second pairing D-man is essential, 2 blocks and a hit made McLeod earn his keep on the night and helped the Outlaws hold on for the win

Strong PK

While the penalty kill isn't something you really want to utilize, when you are able to confidently put your unit out then it takes a big stress out of the game. Both teams managed to keep their teams flawless on the PK, but the Kraken had many more opportunities which isn't necessarily a good thing. With 8 penalties on the night, surely the Carolina coach talked to them post game about their discipline. Even though they weren't punished shorthanded, they were not able to use that momentum of a good kill to get ahead of the Outlaws on the scoreboard

Shooting Gallery

Getting pucks on net is key to wearing down the opposing goaltender and essential to scoring goals. The Anaheim Outlaws started out strong with 10 shots in the first period and managing 9 in the second but after leaving their dressing room post pump-up speech, they came out in the third and proceeded to light up up Nolan McMahon, when it was all over they ended up getting 18 shots on goal in the third period and 37 total, almost doubling their opponents totals on the night. The Kraken seemed like they were outclassed in this contest, but still managed 20 shots and a goal.
