The battle of the Northwest was easily won by the Alaskans, as the Anchorage Armada easily defeated their fierce rivals in the Vancouver Whalers.

FIRST PERIOD

The first period was a fantastic display from the Armada. They got off on the right foot, peppering Kasperi Braulin with a few shots that he easily turned away. Vancouver did have some shots, countering the early a Armada attack with a couple of shots, but they were saved by Ian Venables. Not much happened after that (besides Stavros Halkias getting hit twice in 20 seconds) until rookie Mitchell van Der Heijden scored his third of the year 14 minutes in. Joe Kerr intercepted a Sami Reider pass, and sent it to Berry Blue. Blue sent it back to Kerr, and he sent it to the Flying Dutchman, who calmly slotted a shot past Leppanen to make it 1-0. Spencer MacLean added another 3 minutes later, smashing a one-timer home after a nice feed from Samuel Michaud. Shots were 11 to 8 in favor of the Armada, as Vancouver couldn’t get anything past Ian Venables, who started off strong.

SECOND PERIOD

The second period brought out the rivalry in these two teams. No goals scored (what a surprise!), but a lot of penalties were tallied (7 in total). The big thing in this period? A fight. Stavros Halkias had been pushed around throughout the game, and he’d had enough. He found Bjorn Leppanen at 16:52 and they dropped the gloves. However, Halkias’ bad day continued, as Leppanen beat him up. Tough day for Stavvy. Not a lot of action in the period besides that though. Shots were 14-5 Armada, who continued to generate chances on Braulin. He looked very good, sweeping away all 14 shots. The Vancouver offense was struggling hard though, and just couldn’t generate shots.

THIRD PERIOD

One more goal in the third, as the Armada added a third. Vancouver generated 5 shots again this period, and all of them were saved by Venables. Ian had a fantastic game, garnering a shutout and first star for his great performance. Jake Primeau continued his great start to the season by scoring his 11th goal with 2 minutes left in the game. Darnell Johnson started the attack, and after some good puck movement, he got the puck from Daniel Bischoff and sent it to Primeau, who sniped it bar down to make it 3-0. The game ends Anchorage 3, Vancouver 0, as a dominant performance from the Armada stifled a toothless Vancouver team.

THREE STARS

1st Star - Ian Venables Armada (saved 18 of 18)
2nd Star - Jake Primeau Armada (1 goal)
3rd Star - Mitchell van der Heijden Armada (1 goal)

Rookie of the Game

Oh man what a shit show this has been for the Vancouver Whalers. There is no surprise here that the rookie of the game will be from Anchorage Armada. The rookie that played his hearts out and aimed to be the best player he can be in this game is without a doubt, Mr. Berry Blue. Berry Blue is a top tier draftee of the S50 SMJHL draft. He was selected 4th OA ahead of the talented Zlatan Ibrahimovic jr, whom he played against in this match. While Zlatan was too busy drinking vodka, Berry Blue shed blood and tears to deserve his rank in the draft. He wanted to show everyone that he is one of the best rookie defenseman in the league and he did just that this game. Berry Blue is a British hockey player. He is a two-way defender and as you can imagine, the rivalry is real between him and Zlatan. In this game however, Berry Blue was the real champ. He was able to collect an assist, 2 shots on net and also blocked 3 shots using his body. He was all over the ice this game and played a splendid two way game. He even lost a tooth putting his face to block a shot. At the end of the game, Zlatan shook Berry Blue's hands and said the fight is not over.

Plug of the Game:

This week must be full of one-sided contests, as the Vancouver Whalers hosted the Armada today. Vancouver's second line center Jean-Paul Boivin is going to walk away with this one, although much of the Whalers roster could've taken the honors after this one. While the score ended just 3-0, it was after all a shutout and the Whalers were just dominated the entire game. Boivin, specifically, had a terrible game... posting no points, no shots, a team-low -3 rating and winning just 11 of 28 faceoffs good for a 39% success rate. Oh, and he took a roughing minor in the second period to top it all off.

Shut Out!

Ian Venables played perfectly stopping all 18 shots he faced. It's huge for a goalie to get a shutout and really shows that he had the perfect read on the other teams shooters. He was in the game and in the zone, tracking all the pucks and snatching them out of the air like it's easy. He was a brick wall and really the hero for his team. Each big save he made helped them build momentum and played a key role. He only got more confident as the night went on and everything played out perfectly. That kind of confidence should carry over for a few games at least.
