The Armada Blast Their Way to Victory over the Knights in 3-2 SO Victory

Armada (0-0-0) at  Knights (0-0-0)
Game Link

This was the Kelowna Knights home opener and the season opener for both the Knights and the Anchorage Armada.  Both teams were looking for a win to set the tone for their season.  The Knights had the second worst record last season and were hoping to remedy that with a win in the first game, while the Armada had the second best record in the league last season but were trying to redeem what they felt was a disappointing series loss in the 3rd round of the playoffs last post-season.

Starting Lines
Armada
Jay Reeves - Jake Primeau - Andrei Petrikov
Augustus Wang - Joe Kerr
Ian Venables

Knights
Kalevolaripaavo Kaspertom - Ryan Shepard - Andrey Barbashev II
Noah Nystrom - Luciano Vessot
Luca Del Vecchio
The 1st Period:
Ryan Shepard won the opening face-off versus Jake Primeau.  Kalevolaripaavo Kaspertommevisnapuu took a shot 0:24 seconds into the game, however his shot missed the net.  This was a fast game with a lot of back and forth.  In the opening 1:41 of the game, the shots were 2-1 for Kelowna.  Nick Falcone of the Armada took a hooking penalty 7:35 into the period, but the Knights failed to capitalize on the ensuing powerplay.  Both goalies seemed to be on their game mid-way through the first period as nothing got by either goalie for the opening 10:00 of the game and with each goalie receiving help from the posts, it seemed like this could end up being a goaltending duel between the two.  That is until Ian Venables let in a goal by Knights C Josef Novotny at 11:56 of the first period.  Assists went to RW Nicklaus Engel and LW Gylfi Eriksson.

Shots after the 1st:  Armada 8 -  Knights 13
Score after the 1st:  Armada 0 -  Knights  1

The 2nd Period:
In the second, the Armada seemed to calm down, as they only allowed 6 shots against their goalie.  However, they were only able to muster 5 shots themselves.  One of those shots though, was a prime scoring opportunity as Cyril Vyskoc picked up the loose puck after Ryan Cvitkovich's shot was blocked by Knight defenceman, Alex Ranch.  Armada C Vyskoc saw the opening and beat Del Vecchio up high at 8:53 of the second.  Assists were awarded to LW Cvitkovich and D Ulrik Bergstrom.  It was the only goal in this period and tied the game 1-1.

Shots after the 2nd:  Armada 13 -  Knights 19
Score after the 2nd:  Armada  1  -  Knights  1

The 3rd Period:
Things started off chippy as the Knights Josef Novotny took a cross-checking penalty :03 seconds into the 3rd.  The Knights killed the penalty off and were able to score a little over 4 minutes later as Kalevolaripaavo Kaspertommevisnapuu scored against a sprawled Venables at 6:20 of the period.  Assists went to Ryan Shepard and Andrey Barbashev II.  Novotny again was escorted to the box for boarding at 11:55.  It seemed as though Kelowna was trying to give this game away as two more Knights got caught taking liberties against the Armada.  Todd Matthews was called for hooking at 12:36, giving the Armada a quick 5 on 3, but the Knights were able to hold them off.  Nicklaus Engel of the Knights was called for interference at 15:48, yet again, the Armada could not take advantage.  After peppering Del Vecchio for the entire third period, the Armada finally tied the score 2-2 at 18:14 as Andrei Petrikov had his initial shot blocked Noah Nystrom, but he was able to pick up the loose puck and squeeze it past Del Vecchio.  Assists went to Gart Cheezit and Jake Primeau.  Armada D Derek Holdson ended up taking a hooking penalty, killing off any momentum Anchorage had after tying the game up.

Shots after the 3rd:   Armada 29 -  Knights 27
Score after the 3rd:   Armada  2 -   Knights  2

OT:
Overtime saw the Armada throw a defensive effort together as they had 3 shots on goal while only giving up one shot to the Knights.  Neither team scored.  Both teams were also disciplined and didn't take any penalties in OT.

Shots after OT:   Armada 32 -  Knights 28
Score after OT:   Armada  2  -  Knights  2

SO:
Jake Primeau of the Armada shot first, but Del Vecchio was ready as he easily gloved the shot.  Next up was Todd Matthews of the Knights.  He shot it directly into Venables glove.   Anchorage Armada F Andrei Petrikov skated in with speed, deked a few times before slowing it down and sliding the puck on the ice between Del Vecchio's pads as he went 5-hole, giving the Armada  a 1-0 lead in the shoot-out.
Knights F Kalevolaripaavo Kaspertommevisnapuu did the oppositie, coming in slow before turning on the jets as he tried to deke Venable, but the Armada goalie stood his ground, waiting for Kaspertommevisnapuu to make the first move and he stacked the pads, stopping the puck.  In round 3, Jay Reeves of Anchorage skated from left to right, trying to backhand the puck past Del Vecchio, but he made a kick save stopping the puck.  Last up was Josef Novotny of Kelowna who came in fast, but ended up shooting wide.  The Armada won their first game of the season 3-2 in a shoot-out.

3 Stars of the Game:
1 - Andrei Petrikov (ANC)
2 - Kalevolaripaavo Kaspertommevisnapuu (KEL)
3 - Luca Del Vecchio (KEL)

Game 3 - Top 3 underrated players of the game

1. The number 1 most underrated player of the game that sticks out right away is Anchorage goalie Ian Venables. He picked up the win after only allowing 2 goals on 28 shots but somehow the opposing goalie gets a star of the game for allowing 2 goals on 32 shots and picking up a loss. 4 extra shots isn't a big enough deal to negate a star over picking up the win in my opinion.

2. Ryan Shepard has an amazing underrated game in my book. While he did have an assist it's easy to be overshadowed by all the people who scored a goal in a game even if it was a primary assist. What really stands out the most though is the rest of the game sheet. 16/29 in the faceoff circle, 4 shots blocked as a forward, and a whopping 8 shots on goal. It's a miracle he didn't have an otherworldly game.

3. Luciano Vessot is number 3 for me. Also blocking 4 shots on goal this game but most impressively coming in with 3 minutes and 22 seconds of penalty kill time leading the Knights to go 4 for 4 on the penalty kill and shut down Anchorage's potent attack.
