Much Vaunted Rookie Underwhelms
By Queeq Smegly This past weekend saw the opening games of the 2020 SMJHL season. Many hockey officianados here in the D were watching with much enthusiasm and pride as local hockey hero Michael Preeb took to the ice for his first two games with the Kelowna Knights... And, needless to say, were left with feelings of confusion and disappointment. Discussions overheard at the local watering hole during the first game went from high praise to sour lamentations shockingly quickly indeed.
Preeb's first game, which saw the Knights pitted against the Newfoundland Berserkers, was a lackluster game from the get-go for Preeb. From his initial shift he looked flat-footed, and often times completely lost out there as the game progressed. His poor overall performance was capped off with a goaltender interference penalty late in the 3rd, which saw Preeb make a ham-handed attempt at driving the puck to the net at a most inopportune moment. The Knights' next game, the second of a back-to-back against the Berserkers, resulted in a win and proved to be a much better group effort by the Knights. But if the Knights improved, Preeb only seemed to look worse. He was beat around the outside on a number of occasions in the 1st period. At one point he managed to get himself completely out of position, taking a bad hooking call as a result. His play seemed to even out over the rest of the game, so perhaps nerves have played some part in his poor initial offerings. Time will tell if our local golden boy has got what it takes to put his game together at the SMJHL level. Kelowna is well known for bringing their rookies along in a proficient manner... It's a long season, perhaps Preeb will step up his game and prove that the adulation of his fans is well-placed. Only time will tell, and all we can do is hope. |
