Post Game Show: Game 104 -

Berserkers  Newfoundland Berserkers at Halifax Raiders  raiders

Game Link

A Wednesday night rivalry match between two fierce rivals was full of excitement, as the Halifax Raiders hosted the Newfoundland Berserkers. Steven Vassallo started in net for the visiting Berserkers, while Olli Saarainen Jr. started for the Raiders.

The game started out with a flurry of shots from the Raiders, sending 8 shots on net in the first two minutes of the game, including a couple of nice deflections. A sloppy defensive zone penalty was taken by Simon Moreau to send the Berserkers on the power play early. They took quick advantage of it too, with defenseman Akira Ren ripping a rocket off of the draw past Saarainen to give Newfoundland the early lead. Newfoundland struck again just a couple minutes later, with Rintarou Okabe burying the feed from Dayudi for a 2-0 lead. Halifax cut the lead in half a couple minutes later, with big winger Al Kayhall scoring off of a great play from Thicc Cheezy. The end of the 1st period is where things start to get chippy, when Newfoundland’s Jakob Hamr gets angry after a missed slashing call and takes things into his own hands, and lays out Luke Niemi with a spear. He gets called for a 5 minute major and is also assessed a game misconduct.

The Berserkers started the 2nd on the penalty kill for a little over four minutes but managed to kill it off. The rest of the 2nd period goes by without a ton of action, only eight shots between the two teams.

The third period started off with a bang, with Newfoundland’s top line scoring off of a Halifax turnover. Thomas Vanice swept home the rebound 32 seconds in to extend the lead to two. A post whistle scrum leads to a fight between Alexander Roach and Thomas Vanice, both guys getting in a few punches before being sent to the box. Vanice also got a game misconduct and a minor for instigating. Cody sends home a goal a few minutes later on the power play to bring the Berserkers lead to 3. Halifax strikes back, with Jack Von Ark blasting a shot from the point to cut the deficit to two. Newfoundland really tightened up their defense after that, only allowing four more shots on goal for the last ten minutes of the game.

1. Talk about a guy living up to his name, Jakob Hamr, how are ya. You absolutely love to see a guy getting his money's worth in a game early, and that is exactly what our good friend the Hamr was able to do for us in this game. Before the first period had even ended, Jakob was back in the locker room, supposedly quite irate. Did he deserve the tripping penalty assessed to him? Realistically, yeah, he probably did. Did that mean he had to go back out there later and get booted for spearing someone? Probably not, but it sure as hell made our nights all a little more interesting.

2. A big performance by goaltender Steven Vassallo tonight between the pipes. Steven has had an alright season so far, but he was tested tonight and came out looking very confident from the first puck drop. The Raiders put three more pucks on net, totalling 26 shots compared to the Berserkers 23 attempts. In the SMJHL, where scoring is rampant and goalies usually get a tough look, this game was always going to come down to whichever squad's goaltender was able to show up and make those key saves. Vassallo was the man tonight, holding Halifax to a measly two goals on twenty six shots.

3. Lets chat about one of the more interesting on-ice appearances of the night in one of the more interestingly named players in the SMJHL: our boy, PeaKay Soupcan. Mr. Soupcan hasn't seen a ton of action this season, but it appears that his team management has a fair amount of faith in him, as he was able to pick up some special team minutes in his 1:48 of ice time tonight. Talk about a quiet impact player: PeaKay skated thirty six seconds on the power play unit and seventeen seconds on the penalty kill. It appears he did his job, as Halifax registered a goal on the powerplay and had a 100% penalty kill success rate in this game. They didn't come out with a win, but PeKay played his role!
