Knights Kelowna Knights at Detroit Flacons Falcons

Tonight's clash between the Detroit Falcons and the Kelowna Knights was the second meeting between the two teams. Detroit tops the Eastern and all of the SMJHL with a record of 9-0-1 while the Knights boast a respectable 6-4-1 record.  The two starters in this  tilt were Knights Cillian Kavanagh  and Falcons A.Jobin.  Taking a look at the action in the first.....

First Period Summary

Things start off pretty smooth for the two teams until about the 12th minute mark where the falcons appear to start taking control of this game by out shooting the Knight 10-3.  The first goal of the game comes off the stick of Luke McMaster at 13:23 and the lone assist goes to Frederick Wanesly.  Detroit  continues relentlessly, as we see Kavanagh stand tall making save after save until 18:26 when he is beaten a second time, this time by Frederick Wanesly with a nice feed from Jack kanoff. The shots after one were 18 to 4 in favor of Detroit who came to play tonight......

Second Period Summary

Knights fans, you might wanna look away at this point, although showing a sign of life as forward Andrey Barbashev II scores and makes 3-1 Detroit, the Falcons are just too strong on this night as goals by Edward Williams at 4:33, Justin Womack at 9:59 and just to make matters worst, right before the 2nd period buzzer Detroit strikes again with their 6th goal of the game by Cassidy L Hotskey and chasing out of the game the Knights goaltender.  Enter Brayden Ennis to the storm, the Knights out matched and outshot by a total of 37 to 12 at the end of the second!

Third Period Summary

And we see here the last goal of the contest, but the only goal to beat the young goalie Ennis on the 6th shot he's faced, scored by Guy O"Shea at 15:13 to close out this lopsided affair.  This hyped up game between two top teams proved to be a lackluster affair as the Falcons trounced with ease the Kelowna Knights 7 to 1 and out shot them by a considerable amount of 47 to 18!

Here were the stars of the game......

3 Stars
  1. Det: Guy O Shea (1g, 2a)
  2. Det: Cassidy L Hotskey (1g,1a)
  3. Det:Jack Kanoff (2 assists)
Wrapping it up, Kelowna although edging out the Falcon center iceman in the face off dots by a mere margin of 30 to 26, was the only good part of their game, that and discipline, as only 1 minor penalty was called in this game and it was to the Knights.

The leader in ice time for the Knights was defenseman Alex Ranch with just over 24 minutes of play, a -1 and 2 blocked shots.  But it was LW Eriksson who had a decent game picking up 5 hits although finishing the night off with a -3, not only in that effect!

Over on the winning side, the first star of the game O'Shea had one great night, along with his 3 points he also had the most time played with over 22 minutes and teed up 6 shots on goal.
And a notable mention to Edward Williams who not only thre his weight around pivking up a game high 8 hits, but also chipped in offensively with a goal.  The league leader in points has not slowed down one bit....

Final Score
Knights  1 and  Falcons 7

Whats wrong with the knights?

7-1 is an unacceptable loss by any metric. Even if against a top team in the league. Being outshot 47-18 makes it only worse. To us here at the Kelowna chronicle, its clear that several Knights players just didnt do their jobs this game. While none had a good game, the falcons were able to run rampant through Cilian Kavanagh with no repercussions - where was Simon Takshak? He's lost the edge to his game that kept him valuable, and if GMs Katth and Naosu are able to find anybody in the league who still values him, he should be offloaded as soon as possible.

Knights Armour Penetrated
If you are a Kelowna Knights fan, you have to be embarrassed. Only putting up one goal, and allowing seven goals is one game is a bad look for the franchise. Yes, the Falcons are arguably the hardest teams to play against in the league, but the lack of fight put in by the Knights is unacceptable. Detroit put up 47 shots, while Kelowna were able to fire 18 at the Falcon netminder. Something clearly went wrong for the Knights, and I expect it to be addressed by next game. If not, skating will be the go to drill for the next few weeks if their play doesn't improve.

Bang Bang Bang
Let's talk about banging. Banging of the bodies, that is. In the game, there was a total 39 hits thrown throughout the game. Some small, some big. Tonight, we'll talk about the big hitters, the guys that were really banging hard tonight. For Kelowna, the big banger was Gylfi Eriksson. The Swedish winger was doing everything he could to fire his team up, get the boys to rally. Sadly, they weren't feeling it and it wasn't enough. Now for Detroit, we had the body seeking missile Edward Williams throw a huge eight hits during the game. Kelowna were already hurting on the scoreboard, Williams just wanted to make sure their bodies hurt as much as their feelings.

Second Period Dummy
For Detroit. the second period went by too quickly. For Kelowna, it couldn't end fast enough. Five total goals were scored during the second period, and Kelowna had one of them. For Detroit, it was twenty minutes of keep away as Kelowna struggled to knock the puck off the Falcon's sticks. The first ten minutes of the period saw Detroit score three goals, while Kelowna tried to stop the beating by finding the back of the net once. To add insult to injury, Detroit would end the period with another goal. Not the worst period in the history of Kelowna Knights hockey, but it for sure is one that no one will want to remember.

Comment 2: What was the difference?

In a game that ends 7-1 you would think the problem would be undisciplined hockey happened and the the knights spent most the time in the box. One might also think that the Falcons were just physically superior to the Knights and bodied them off the puck. However the knights won both the face-off battle and Hits.
The real difference is best displayed in an excerpt by LMFAO and Lil' Jon,

"Everybody, everybody
The ladies love us
When we pour shots
They need an excuse
To suck our Popcorn
We came to get drunk
How about you?
Bottles up
Let's go round two
Shots shots shots shots shots shots"

The Falcon's out shot the Knights 47 to 18. This being the major factor the Falcon's 7-1 victory.

Comment 3: Kelowna's offense, was offensive on the eyes. But at least Jobin's an entertainer.

If you're the Falcons you could have dressed a pylon in net for the first period. The knights offense was abysmal. In the first period the only the puck saw Jobin four times. Standing behind the falcon's net, I expected to see some action. But I felt like I was bird watching with the binoculars out. Staring down the ice. In the first period I was lucky enough to see a shot at two and a half minutes into the game, five and a half minutes into the game, a shot at 10:27. Then the action really started. Jobin put a show on for us. He started scraping the ice with his skates in the crease to form a snowy surface. He then laid down and started to make a snow angel in his gear. In all of my years of watching hockey. I've never seen a goaltender have the audacity and comfort to do that as the Falcons offense was peppering the opposing goaltender. Jobin noticed that the knights were mounting an attack at the 15 minute mark where he faced his 4th and final shot of the period.

Detroit’s Dominance Continues
With only having faced a single loss on the season, the Detroit Falcons were looking to continue to dominate in their next game against the Kelowna Knights. The Falcons certainly answered as the team was able to continue their offensive scoring abilities by notching 7 goals on the Knights. This offensive powerhouse was led by right winger Guy O’Shea this time around as he got himself 1 goal and 2 assists being a plus 3 for the game. However, the more important goal came from leading scorer Edward Williams early in the second. After two quick goals, the game had a score of 3-1. However, it was Williams’ goal a minute and a half after the Knights had just scored that killed any momentum the Knights had. The Falcons’ leading scorer Edward Williams was able to get it into the Knights zone on a clear-cut breakaway and snapped a quick wrister that beat Kavanagh! We can’t really blame the goaltender on that one as it was the defense that caused the break. Regardless, 3 more goals from the Falcons followed and with 7 goals on 47 shots, it certainly looked like the Falcons showed no signs of slowing down.

Brightside in the Knights
Although the Knights were dominated by the Falcons in this game, there were certainly players that played well for them regardless such as Rocco Berni and Glyifi Eriksson. However, we’d like to focus on fourth line center Morgan Forestier who really impressed us. With a total of about 12 minutes played, Forestier had himself 3 blocked shots and 1 takeaway. Also, in the faceoff circle Forestier won 7 of 12 for a faceoff percentage of 58.3%. Forestier certainly got himself in the game early as just over a minute into the game, Forestier dove in front of a shot by dominant defenseman Guy O’Shea to block one of his hard shots. Although the game did not end the way that the Knights would have wanted, players like Forestier really shined bright and made themselves noticed.
