Berserkers Newfoundland Berserkers vs. Anaheim Outlaws  Outlaws

Hello and welcome to our coast-to-coast SMJHL bout! The Berserkers make the loooooong trip from the island for a matchup with the Outlaws! The Berserkers have been off to a slow start this season, floating just above the bottom of the league. This will certainly be a tough game for them with not only the long travel time, but facing off against the Outlaws, who are within striking distance of the SMJHL's top teams. That being said, this is the SMJHL, and any team can win if you get too complacent. Will the Outlaws keep their foot on the gas? Can the Berserkers come out swinging? Let's get started!

1ST PERIOD

Now I know I just mentioned how the Berserkers' journey could make any team rusty, but that sure wasn't showing off the hop! Less than two minutes in, while the Outlaws had control in the offensive zone, an excellently timed shot block by right defence Disisde Dayudie springs Jukka Timonen who sets up an attack in the other end before burying the first goal of the game. The early goal really boosted the Berserkers who looked right at home early in this game. However the Outlaws aren't a team that makes a habit out of letting others run the show in their barn, so it's not long before they respond. Just over five minutes later the Outlaws third line finds themselves in a net-front scramble. Bale is banging away in that high danger area, and he puts it through on his second try. The game is tied at 1!

2ND PERIOD

After a back and forth first, the teams appear to be at a stalemate for much of the second. The Berserkers are piling up the shots, but starting goalie Strom Chamberlain will not budge for the Outlaws. Instead it's our boys from the island that will crack half way through the period. Some excellent pressure from the Outlaws as Rhys Pritchard is all over the puck. Despite the physical abuse he gets to the net, gets his stick on a Kevin Robinson bullet, and deflects one home to take the lead. Anaheim's coach must have seen something he liked going on with these two because just two minutes later they're back on the ice and taking over in the offensive zone yet again.
Robinson blows a shot just wide, but Pritchard is in the right place at the right time to pot the bounce. That'll be his second of the game, both assisted by Robinson. Now the Berserkers, despite trailing by two, they have largely looked in control of the game. They're out-chancing Anaheim but can't seem to catch a break. Just when it looked like they'd leave the period in a two goal hole, some magic from Newfoundland's top line: a beautiful tic-tac-toe straight out of the hockey handbook. Ren from the blueline finds Okabe at the top of the slot, who hits Cody down low for a one-timer into an open cage. And just like that, it's a one goal game.

3RD PERIOD

Much like in the second, the Berserkers appeared to have a tight grip on the game. Perhaps trying to nurse their lead, Anaheim was hesitant to take any offensive risks, opting instead to close things down and play safe. The Berserkers saw the majority of chances, but many were low-danger and kept to the perimeter by a tight Outlaw defence. After more than fifteen minutes of Newfoundland trying valiantly to knot things up, the Outlaws would capitalize on an opportunity to extend their lead. Once again Anaheim's pesky third line goes to work with extended zone time, hammering away on Newfoundland until Bale finds the back of the net for his second of the game. At this point the wind had left the Berserkers' sails, and the game would wind down to an Outlaw victory.

Final Score:

Outlaws 4 - 2   Berserkers

Three Stars:

Goal - ANA - Bale (2G, 5S)
Goal Goal - ANA - Rhys Pritchard (2G, 4S)
Goal Goal Goal - ANA - Nicholas Owens (1A, 4H)

The turning point of this game has to be at 11:24 of the second period, when Rhys Pritchard scored the go-ahead goal for the Anaheim Outlaws, and shortly after added a game-winning goal two minutes and thirty-four seconds later, both assisted by Kevin Robinson. These two daggers proved too much to overcome by the Newfoundland Berserkers as they were not able to pull even with Anaheim goalie Strom Chamberlain only letting another goal through towards the end of the second period as the Berserkers turned on the taps trying to equalize. This increased offensive desperation meant that even though the Outlaws were besieged during the third period, the third line of Hammarberg-Price-Bale were able to force an icing from the Berserkers, and in the ensuing faceoff caught the defense cheating up-ice to start the rush. Bale would make the Berserkers defense pay for their mistake by potting a goal, and sealing the game away for Anaheim.

The MVP for this one has got to be Anaheim Outlaws wing Rhys Pritchard. He was extremely efficient, converting just four shots into two goals, and doing so in just over 16 minutes of ice time. His teammate, Bale, was similarly efficient, with 2 goals on 5 shots in just over 13 minutes on the ice. What set Pritchard's performance apart, however, was his performance in the 2nd period of the game. At the half-way point of the 2nd, the game was fiercely contested, and Newfoundland actually had a shot advantage. Then, seemingly out of nowhere, Pritchard netted a goal 11:24 into the period, giving Anaheim the lead. He followed that up with another goal, just over two minutes later, demoralizing the Berserkers with what would ultimately be the game-winner. (134)

Goalie Goals

A real highlight of this matchup was Anaheim goalie Strom Chamberlain. The Berserkers out-shot the Outlaws 28 to 23 but Chamberlain was a wall, letting in just 2 for a save percentage of .929. Both of those goals came while shorthanded, though admittedly one penalty was a result of poor play by Chamberlain himself. Chamberlain is currently 5th in SV%, and 4th in GAA in the league. The Outlaws have put a lot of faith into their second season goalie, and it appears to be paying off, putting them at the top of the standings after comfortably winning games like these.

Coming into the game:
For the 27th game of the year, we're expecting a close one due to how similar these two teams have been playing up until this point of the season. This is the 7th game of the year for both Newfoundland and Anaheim, while both teams have managed to get 7 points on the season so far, trying them for 3rd place in the league with 2 additional teams. A win here for either team may start a trend of pulling away from the pack. Both teams have been scoring at a nearly identical rate as well. Newfoundland has an even 18 goals for and against on the season, while Anaheim has 20 and 21 respectively. Newfoundland has alternated wins and losses all year, without having a single win/loss streak of 2+ games. Coming off a loss last game, they hope this trend continues and they don't suffer their first losing streak of the year.

Rookies settling in:
Both of these teams have a large amount of rookies playing, with 8 rookies on both squads. And the rookies from both teams showed the league that they're not intimidated by the veterans, and are here to play. The first goal of the game was an all-rookie goal for Newfoundland, with Jukka Timonen scoring on the powerplay from Gregory Stiemsma and Andrei Kostitsyn. Timonen also played 20:10 minutes on the game, 6th most in the game, including 2 minutes on the penalty kill. Kostitsyn also wasn't afraid to get into it physically, throwing 5 hits in the game, as well as getting in a scrap that resulted in a high sticking penalty. Aside from the all-rookie first goal by the Berserkers, Anaheim rookies Yompy Stearf and Rikard Hammarberg also tallied 1 assist each.

Ice in his Veins:
With 3 and half minutes left in the game, the Newfoundland Berserkers trailed by one goal and they were playing full throttle, dominating the possession game in the 3rd period and firing pucks on net in a full barrage. At 16:30 in the 3rd, the shot attempts in the period were 14-6 in favor of the Berserkers, with 9 shot attempts in a row at one point. So it seemed like it was just a matter of time until Newfoundland scored to tie the game up and bring us to overtime. But then came Bale. With all the momentum going to the Berserkers, Anaheim's Bale saw a scoring opportunity, and converted with absolutely no room for error to put Anaheim up by 2 and essentially ending the game. Bale was able to slow down the game, take over the play, and bury a shot, proving that he possesses the clutch factor, and is a player you want on the ice late in close games.

We're back for WEEK TWO of Ace's CRANKIN HITS!

This game is in sunny Anaheim, California where the Newfoundland Beserkers are on the road to take on the Outlaws! This game was pretty quiet up until the fun shit happens! Despite our grainy camera footage, this gif catches a beautiful glimpse of the open ice hit by Andrei Kostitsyn on Kevin Robinson. Robinson was pulled for a concussion protocol after this healthy bit of body contact. The Outlaws rallied behind their fallen compatriot after this hit, firing back and eventually triumphing by a final score of 4-2. I am excited to see the next matchup between these two squads.

Special Teams Keeps it Close

The Outlaws won this game, but not because of their special teams.  The Berserkers were able to capitalize on two of their four powerplay opportunities with goals from rookie defenseman Jukka Timonen and five year veteran winger Cody.  On the opposite side, the Outlaws just couldn’t get their own powerplay going.  Their flow was stopped multiple times by going offside and even icing the puck twice on the same powerplay.  Newfoundland G Steven Vassallo stopped all 3 shots that came his way while the team was a man down.  While the Berserkers did not have the greatest showing overall, the special teams managed to keep the game for almost the entire game.

Save of the game

You have to check this one out! Early in the third period Newfoundland's forward Mattias Birdstrom has a open net for a split second to tie the score and potentially change the outcome of the whole game. Unfortunately for Birdstrom the puck bounces little bit before he can make the shot. Watch how Anaheim's MVP goalie Strom Chamberlain stretches his leg in front of the puck with lightning speed. Even if the shooter could have lifted the puck above Chamberlain's pad there there would have been his blocker to make sure that Anaheim stays in the lead. Amazing flexibility and body control showed here. This save was a icing on a cake of the stellar performance Chamberlain showed us here tonight!

Strom Chamberlain Loses Temper
Late in the second period, Strom Chamberlain, Anaheim's goaltender, took exception to an extra poke check from Newfoundland's Steve Harrington after the puck was covered. He wound up and took a swipe at Harrington's legs as he skated by and we went down easily. The refs made a quick judgement call to give the Berserkers a powerplay. Chamberlain laughed as Harrington was carried to the bench, but the Berserker forward would return later in the game. Cody did score on the ensuing powerplay, but fortunately for Chamberlain, that would be the last goal he would allow in the game and the Outlaws would go on to victory.

Secondary Scoring roars to life for ANA
With Anaheim sputtering out of the game with only 2 wins in the first 5 games, Anaheim needed everyone to step up. Anaheim’s secondary scoring answered the call and put on a show. Bale got the show started in the first period with a seeing eye shot from the right circle that threaded through multiple defenders and past Steven Vassallo.  Rhys Pritchard took over in the second period with two goals in quick succession, giving ANA a 3-1 lead. Bale capped off the night with his second of the season, and of the game in the third period giving Anaheim the win.

Firsts of Many
With their poor start to the season by Anaheim, it wasn’t a surprise to see multiple players score their firsts of the season. Both Bale and Rhys Pritchard scored their first and second goals of the season, while John Forfeit and rookies Yompy Stearf, Rikard Hammarberg registered their first assists. For Anaheim to be successful in the season, contributions from the rookies as well as from the bottom six will be vital. Anaheim hopes this game will help get the monkeys off the backs of these players and propel them into the win column if they want to have a shot at the championship this year.

3 Stars
The three stars of the game was no surprise. Bale was the first star of the game with 2 goals on 5 shots in only 13 minutes of ice time and minimal powerplay time. Rhys Pritchard took the second star of the game with 2 goals on 4 shots and 16 minutes of ice time, while being defensively sound on the penalty kill.  Nicholas Owens, first pairing defenseman for Anaheim took the third star of the game with an assist, 4 hits and 2 shot blocks in 21 minutes of ice time, with equal time on the PP and PK.

Stat Pack Breakdown

Strong PP but Low EVs
The Newfoundland Berserks showed off a very strong powerplay in this game, managing to score on two of their four chances on the powerplay in this game. However, they couldn't make the Outlaws pay at even strength despite their advantage of 28 shots to 23 over the course of the game. The Berserkers were slightly more aggressive in the game as well which you'd expect to cause the issues of penalties throughout the game, but they managed to deal with their own penalty kills, but they couldn't manage to keep the puck out at even strength.
