(10-10) Armada 3 - 4 Kraken (13-7)

Good evening, and welcome to The Atlantic Report, your Carolina Kraken post-game show! I’m Jonas Johanessen, here to bring you all the highlights of tonight's exciting 4-3 Kraken win in the Battle of the Sea!

1st Period

The game got off to a roaring start, when Anchorage was called on a tight offsides. Sterling MacTavish took the subsequent faceoff clean, and right to the tape of Velveteen Dream. The rookie speedster Jimmy Wagner was off to the races as the puck dropped and Dream put a pass out to him as he crossed into the Armada zone where a clean deke freed up the Austrian’s third goal of the season just 50 some seconds into the game!

Carolina would not let up though, the forchecking pressure paying off after almost two minutes of up-tempo dump and chase led to in a mid period icing. Anchorage won the puck in their own zone but a tired Daniel Bischoff turned it over near center ice. Ambacas Cuddles took over, found Kenny Creller onside in the Armada end, where he found Tom Fiddler via Alexander Watcher for the Flying Fid’s 4th of the season!

Fiddler was spreading the love too, just not in Ian Venables’ direction. Still in the first, he won an offensive zone draw against Mitchell van der Heijden right to the tape of Kenny Creller who drifted over the slot and snapped one past Venables, who was pulled after letting in his third of the opening period.

The horn buzzed at the end of the first, and a shellshocked Armada walked to the visitors locker room underneath a sea of orange. Outshot 13-9, they would need to revisit their game plan, and step it up for Sergei Potvinov.

2nd Period

The Armada would come out of the first intermission firing to start the second period though as two shots ripped wide of the Kraken net. The second one bounced off the glass weird, and right on to Daniel Bischoff’s stick as he streaked past the sprawling rookie keeper Frans Eller to bring them the Armada back into the game, now only down two.

The tides would start to turn after that goal, and it wouldn’t take long for the Armada to find their stride now. Sergei Potvinov would collect a Kraken dump, and catch them napping as he found Brooks Wayne and Ryan Cvitkovich who would pull off a fancy give and go to free up Cvitkovich  for a one timer to bring the Armada within a goal.

The flood gates would officially be open at this point, as Anchorage let loose with an unrelenting pursuit of possession that Carolina could only momentarily clear. A web of passes in the Carolina zone later, and Berry Blue would find Santtu Rasanen who fed Chris de Siren as Frans Eller was screened by Vladimir Khristorozhdestvensk. De Siren would light the lamp with a wrister and the game was suddenly tied, three all.

Your Kraken would buckle down in front of Eller though, and they started to stabilize the game. It was a back and forth affair for the next few minutes as both teams desperately tried to seize the momentum that would almost certainly seal this game away. The Orange Sea wouldn’t have to wait long though, as Micheal Fitted would feed Joseph Weston who missed the net on his shot, but collected it himself and fired an absolute banger from a tough angle to put Carolina on top again.

Anchorage would take a penalty soon after, as Ulrik Bergstrom would get booked for high sticking on Alexei Rykov and that power play would seal away Big Mo for a while. Zbigniew Pokrywka would get sent away for interference near the end of the period, but the Kraken would hold and the damage was done. They were outshot 10-9 that period, but they still led going in to the last period of hockey.

3rd Period

Wildly enough, the offenses for both teams came out slow in the third. I don’t know how much of it was fatigue and how much was the neutral zone trap coming out of the Kraken side, but the offense and shots both died out. We would only see 15 shots this period, even with Anchorage throwing everything they could at the Carolina defense. That D held strong though, and Eller surged back to stop all 9 of the Armada shots through a power play from Ulrik Bergstrom and a penalty kill from Zbigniew Pokrywka.

1. This is one of those incredible games where unfortunately one team has to lose. The aptly named “Battle of the Sea” was a fun affair. A back and forth contest with the Armada putting up a spirited fight in the second period to make it a game. After a disastrous first period, Anchorage really pulled their socks up and fought with the same heart, passion and desire that made them cup champions last season. The shot totals were dead even and both sides flashed the talent and depth needed for deep runs. If they meet in the playoffs it will be fun

2. This doesn’t excuse Anchorage from the Elephant in the room. Ian Venables had a horrific day. Being pulled after allowing 3 goals in the first period is never a good thing, especially not when this is the SMJHL and every game is important. Luckily, Anchorage had a saviour. Sergei Potvinov has had an up and down season but really showed his talent this game, stopping 17 of 18 shots for .944 save percentage. He didn’t deserve to lose this one. This is probably just an anomaly game for Venables but Anchorage only goes as far as he takes them come playoff time so watch out.

3. It goes to show that Anchorage does indeed have talent and can totally take over games when they want to. That second period is something the coaches and GM will want out of them every single night going forward. The entire lineup came alive and helped bring the game back from despair. Daniel Bischoff scoring a nice goal, Ryan Cvitkovich flexing his talent and the rookie third line continuing to make their presence felt wherever they go. Only three players ended up with negative +/- ratings so hopefully, Anchorage can build off that and find consistent winning patterns as they continue the cup defense.

Unsung Hero:

Despite the Anchorage loss, you'd be remiss to look at this game and not talk about the Armada's third line centre Braden Lowrie. He might not have shown up on the scoresheet, but he posted 4 shots, 3 hits, and +/- of 0! If he gets a bounce you could easily be looking at overtime and at least one point for Anchorage. Lowrie played a solid 18 minutes, including 2 full minutes of power-play time, and still came out a +0 on the night. Again, the scoring will come, especially on 4 shots-- but the responsibility to come out of 18+ minutes without giving up a goal is fantastic. He took the body, he got pucks to the net, and he ate minutes without being a liability. Tonight, Lowrie was an impact player everywhere but on the score sheet.

This one was a game of swings, and just as soon as it seemed clear which team would come away with the win, the other seemed to swing momentum right back around. Carolina opened the matchup by putting three goals on Anchorage just in the first period. Scoring just 52 seconds into the game had to get the Anchorage spirits down enough on its own, but following it with two more goals in the period makes it difficult to imagine how Anchorage even made this one close. A lesser team might have folded on the ice. Anchorage instead fought back with 3 goals in the first 9 minutes of the 2nd period. But in the midst of that wave of momentum, Carolina were able to mount a counter attack and a Joseph Weston shot put a stop to Anchorage's momentum. That huge momentum swing back in Carolina's favor was all it took, as the two teams struggled to find their earlier accuracy for the remainder of the game and Carolina walked away with the win. Advanced Stats

This season Carolina is first in goals scored P1. First in goals scored in P2. 8th in goals scored P3.

Armada is second in P1, fourth in P2, and 9th in P3.

Clearly both teams excel when playing out the gate, which makes it interesting that Armada had no answer to the Kraken in the first period. But this enabled the Kraken to let off the gas once they were comfortable, and Anchorage capitalized on it after learning the Kraken offense in the first period. Without some sloppy defending to give Weston the final word, this game goes into OT, maybe even a shootout. The Kraken are woefully inexperienced past regulation, and Anchorage has the much better record in those waters so I see that contest going to the Armada easily.

That poor 3rd period performance is sure to bite both teams in the ass in future games, and needs to be looked at seriously.

Leidos lowlight of the night:

The lowlight of the night in this one goes out to goaltender Ian Venables of the Anchorage Armada. Venables was pounced on for three goals in the opening period on ten shots for an even 70-percent save percentage. After the third goal at 17:03 of the first, he was replaced by Sergei Potvinov who eventually ended up actually taking the loss even though he stopped 17 of 18 Carolina shots fired his way. We have no expectation that Venables won't be able to bounce back from this performance as he has been the clear number one for Anchorage the entire season.

Ace's CRANKIN HITS!

Take a look at this massive bit of body contact by Augustus Wang. This got the Carolina crowd up in arms wanting some good ol' fashioned fisticuffs in retribution! He finds Ambacas Cuddles streaking up the wing and trying to chip the puck around him, and firmly deposits him down on his own ass. There was a slight concern for injury on the play as Cuddles was slow to get up, but he did eventually pop back up and make his way over to the bench. It's body contact like this that definitely gets the blood flowing into your extremities!

1) Decent game for Chris de Siren in an unfortunate loss to Carolina that evens the series by this point.  One thing of note that I noticed was Chris had way too many passes intercepted. Positioning is key and Chris needs to keep his eyes up and he needs to coordinate better with his line mates in order to increase scoring and pressure on opposing teams in the offensive zone.  Breakout passes seem to be especially vulnerable. Although he scored a goal, he still had too many shots miss the net, which is not a good look on the score sheet.  Moving forward through the season hopefully through practice and experience Chris can get those passes tape to tape to help his line score more and defensively succeed.

2) A common theme for Anchorage, on Faceoffs they managed only 44 of 92 attempts putting them in the 47% range on Faceoffs. Work is still needed on this front as they've been consistently at a disadvantage in the defensive zone due to decisive losses in the faceoff circle. On the Penalty Kill front both teams were 100% on the PK as the Power Play on both sides struggled to get anything going with the man advantage.  Ian Venables had a rough start to a game that saw him pulled 17 minutes into the first period. Sergei Potvinov however shined with a brialliant showing on a .944 Save Percentage that saw him stopping 17 of 18 shots. Anchorage did manage to have a good showing on blocked shots, something the team has been working on in consideration of the teams defensive struggles.

3) Carolina had a good game for their own part, with Frans Eller stopped 25 of 28 shots. Michael Fitted had a great time in the faceoff circle going 22 for 30 on faceoffs topping his team this game. Joseph Weston played pretty well throughout the game for Carolina eventually netting the games winning goal which shows he's doing a great job improving on his skills pertaining to scoring and offensive production. Carolina continues to be near the top of the league with an excellent season continuing on with this win over Anchorage, which brings them to 7-3 in their last 10.

Critical Moment of the Game
The critical moment of this game came during the second period. The Carolina Kraken had gotten out to a huge 3-0 lead in the first period. But the Anchorage Armada must have fixed something during the first intermission, because they came out and scored three quick goals to tied the game within the first 10 minutes of the second period. Just when everything looked to be going the Armada's way, Joseph Weston grabbed a rebound and fired it past the Anchorage netminder, Sergei Potvinov, who had come in earlier in relief of starter Ian Venables. Weston celebrated with a belly slide from blue line to blue line before heading to the bench after scoring his 9th of the season.

MVP
Since getting shipped over from the Detroit Falcons last season, Kenny Creller has been a huge part of the Carolina Kraken's success. He really showed off his value and why the Kraken traded for him in this game tonight. Kenny Creller really did it all out on the ice and was definitely the MVP of the winning Kraken. Scoring a goal, picking up an assist, putting on the pressure by taking four shots and delivering three big hits, it is thanks to Creller's efforts that the Carolina Kraken were able to come out on top in this back and forth game.

Rookie Netminder
Frans Eller, a rookie netminder was picked pretty highly in the draft by the Carolina Kraken, at the tail end of the second round of a very deep and talented draft class. The promise of having a young netminder who will shut the door for them for many seasons was too much to pass up. Eller really showed off the talent that Kraken management saw in him in this game versus the Armada tonight. Eller won his third game of the season, stopping 25 shots out of 28 en route to a 4-3 win. This game got a little crazy and Eller did a great job keeping his head and locking it down.

Shooters Shoot
"You miss 100% of the shots you don't take" is a quote that every hockey player has been hearing for ages and some players take this to heart more than others. Some players love to shoot that small black rubber puck and nobody loved to shoot the puck more tonight than Daniel Bischoff of the Anchorage Armada. Daniel Bischoff took a game high 5 shots on goalie Frans Eller in an attempt to win the game for the Armada. Although he did score once, his efforts were not enough to take down Eller and the Kraken and the Armada went home with a 4-3 loss.
