Knights 5 - 4  Berserkers

What a world wind of a game this one was. This was both of their second game of the season and the second time they have played each other. The first game ended with a 4-3 win for the Berserkers so obviously the Knights wanted some payback and they got it with a 5-4 shoot out win. It was a hard fought battle for both teams and we will see how it panned out for both of them.

First Period

Nothing spectacular happened scoring-wise in the first period however there were multiple penalties for both teams and both teams were getting quite physical with Ryan Shepard of the Knights dishing out multiple hits during the period. It seemed like the refs had enough and tried to get the game under control as they called the first penalty of the game. They got Noah Nystrom of the Knights for hooking 9 minutes into the game. This penalty was easily killed off by the Knights. A few minutes later Andrey Barbashev of the Knights got called for hooking at 13 minutes into the game. Thomas Vanice of the Berserkers was clearly not happy with the hook as he retaliate and got called for an interference penalty. The teams played 4 on 4 with no goals conceded by either team. Just as these penalties were killed the Knights got called for another hook! Preeb was being careless and got called for the penalty.

The Berserkers were not gonna make this opportunity go to waste as they score! Slatt Potts was registered with the powerplay goal.
As the first period comes to end we get another penalty as Andrei Kostitsyn of the Berserkers gets called for a high stick with less than a minute left in the first.

Second Period

The rest of the high sticking penalty get killed as the two teams go back to 5 on 5. Both teams started to wake up in the second as four goals were scored during this period, two by each team. The Knights open up the scoring 3:41 into the second with a rip by Nicklaus Engel registering his first of the season. Rocco Berni and Alex Ranch both registered assists also, with Berni getting his first ever career point. The Knights were not done there, 17 second later Antii Antinen scores his first of the season, Noah Nystrom and Luciano Vessot both registered assists.

The Knights seemed to be on a roll but their discipline issues caught up to them as Kalevolaripaavo Kaspertommevisnapuu got called for a tripping penalty 4 seconds after second goal. Sure enough the Berserkers made the Knights pay and scored on the ensuing powerplay. 5 minutes left in the second period the Knights get called for another penalty as Danila Zhernov get called for a high sticking. Jukka Timonen scored on the powerplay, Slatt Potts got his second point of the game as he registed an assist.

The second period comes to end with the Berserkers up 3-2

Third Period

The Knights needed to come up with something as they were down by 1 with just one period left to play. Four minutes into the third they got their Equalizer as Adam Scianna scores bringing the score tied at 3-3. This wouldn't last, however, as Okabe of the Berserkers scores 2 and a half minutes later. Okabe gets his first of the season. For 10 minutes the teams played with the score 4-3. The Berserkers went on the penalty kill twice this team but the Knights couldn't come up with anything until 3 and a half minutes left in the period the Knights scored tying the game again! Ryan Shepard with his second of the season and first of the game. The Knights continue to show their disciplinary issues as Barbashev gets called for his second penalty of the game with a holding stick penalty. The Knights, however were able to hold on and send this game into Overtime

Overtime

Neither team were able to score in overtime, both teams just registered one shot on goal. The only way this game was going to be settled was with a shoot out.

Shoot out

The Knights were up first in the Shootout as Kaspertommevisnapuu takes the stage. However, his shot misses the net entirely!
Kostitsyn of the Berserkers responded with a nice shot but it was saved by the Knights netminder Del Vecchio
Berni of the Knights was up next as he shoots and scores! The Knights are now up 1-0 in the shoot out
The Berskerkers forward, Vanice made a nice attempt but Del Vecchio is having none of it as he saves his shoot out attempt
Barbashev went next but he missed the net
Code of the Berserkers is up next he must make it to keep the Berserkers alive but Del Vecchio is on fire as he makes another save!

The game ends with the Knights getting their revenge, winning the game 5-4 with a 1-0 shoot out win

Penalty Knightmare

The Knights' penalty kill almost killed them this game...

There were a lot of penalties this game, with 12 PIM for Kelowna and 8 for Newfoundland. But Kelowna's PK was abysmal, letting in a goal on 3/5 of their attempts. The zerks managed to keep the puck out on all 3 of theirs. This Knights team has got to crack down on risky plays because clearly they cannot handle the consequences. You just don't let in 3 power play goals. This game should never have gone to a shootout, and the Knights need to go back to the drawing room because they won't be so lucky next time.

Shoot To Win

The Knights cranked up the shot counter to overcome their 1 goal deficit coming into the third period. The zerks had put up just 2 extra shots in the first two periods, but had an extra goal to show for it. The Knights played a fantastic third period to come back, shitting out 16 shots to the Berserkers' 4. This dominant period netted them the 2 goals they needed to tie up the game for a push to win in overtime. They might have won it in regulation too, if not for some fancy footwork by Okabe to sneak one in off a faceoff win.

Value of the Game

One player you might not have noticed at first look was Gregory Stiemsma. He entered the game for one single power play - a whole 2:37 minutes - and grabbed himself an assist. Let me tell you, that is a Hall of Fame level P/20 if I ever saw one. Stiemsma has been having a fantastic rookie year for the Berserkers, putting up 13 points in just 338 minutes. That's good for 6th best P/20 on the team - .3 ahead of the next rookie. Efficiency is the name of this guys game and that powerplay is exactly the type of thing you see from him game after game.

Hit of The Game

The Massive Hit

The hit of the game has to be the massive, humongous, earth-shaking check thrown on Morgan Forestier by (Clean) Andrei Kostitsyn, which separated the Kelowna Knights center from the puck, and allowed Slatt Potts to steal the puck and wrist it in past Luca Del Vecchio for the first goal of the game. The Knights bench was up in arms after the hit demanding for a major penalty and a game misconduct as they viewed it to be an illegal check to the head, and Forestier was slow to get up as the impact seemed to have shook him up significantly. The referees declined to call a penalty on Kostitsyn, however, declaring the hit to be clean and legal. Kostitsyn would go on to record a couple more hits during the game, but none had the impact of his first hit on Forestier.

Unsung Hero(es) of the Game

Jukka Timonen deserves this Unsung Hero of the Game award for his valiant attempt to get his team the victory, with 1 goal, 1 assist, 2 shots and 3 blocks. Timonen played a huge 22:22, including 2:13 on the power play and 2:27 on the penalty kill. This ice-time sits just behind the first pairing of Akira Ren and Disisde Dayudie, who were both held scoreless although Akira Ren managed an assist. Rintarou Okabe gets runner-up mention here, leading the forwards with a massive 24:01 of ice-time and potting a goal on the night. He also managed to stay neutral in terms of +/- which is excellent.

Could Use Some Improvement
The Berserkers might want to include some penalty-shot practice at the end of their morning skates, because Luca Del Vecchio has no problems at all stopping the Newfoundland shooters as they came in for their turn in the barrel. The shot selection, speed, and placement were poorly chosen, and obviously the coaching staff had not done any scouting on Del Vecchio as the players seemed to pick where they wanted to shoot at random. That would be excusable if the goalie had been a rookie or someone new, but Del Vecchio is quite well known and has had many appearances recently including in the World Juniors where he put up an excellent showing.

Also, Lucifer Morningstar barely managed to get 2:03 in the game - what is he even doing on the bench? I guess someone has to open and close the doors for shift changes.

Comment 1:

Goalie Glimpse
Berserker's netminder Steven Vassallo stole the show for Newfoundland. Kelowna absolutley dominated in the third period, outshooting Newfoundland 16-4 in that time. While Steven gave up two goals during the frame, it would have been a lot worse if he had not been in net. The Knights were thirsty for blood, and Vassallo shut the door to give his team a chance in overtime. He did a very good job controlling rebounds throughout the period, only allowing 7 rebounds on 16 shots. The keeper saw the last 10 shots of the period, with his counterpart Luca Del Vecchio seeing his last shot of the third period with 11 minutes still to go in the game. once it came to the shootout, Vassallo allowed the winning goal, which slightly tarnishes his game, giving him a SOL. That point he fought for the Beserker's will be key if the team is fighting for standings later on in the year, and his teammates have him to thank.

Comment 2:

Rookie of the Game:
Rookie for the Knights Rocco Berni had an outstanding night. Early in the game he picked up his first assist of his young SMJHL career. Playing 11:44 for the Knights, he accumulated a +1 rating, winning 10 of 19 face offs as the Knights second line center. Berni threw one hit, and shot once. Perhaps Rocco's most impressive moment of the game was during the shootout, when he was called upon to take the second shot. The coach showed a lot of trust in Berni, as it is not often that a rookie would be trusted in that situation. Berni showed why he is a budding star in the league, sliding the puck past the netminder with a slick move after a qucik head fake to throw the goalie. This goal ended up winning the Knights the game, as no one else from either team scored. Teammates made sure to collect the puck so he could start his trophy case!

Comment 3:

Shot Block of the Game:
Late into overtime, Akria Ren of Newfoundland found himself looking at an empty net after a face off and spotty coverage left him open on the wing. Luckily for the Knights, Luciano Vessot, a top pairing defensman , sprawled over the ice to stop the shot with his body. With only 22 seconds left in the extra frame, this was a key stop that saved the game for the Knights. Teammate Kalevolaripaavo Kaspertommevisnapuu picked up the puck and turned it into a breakaway down the other way. His shot was stopped by Steven Vassallo, but the opportunity was created all thanks to the selfless play of Vessot. Luciano was seen limping off the ice with a grimace over his face, but some might have mistaken it for a smile, given that he had just kept the Knights in it, and almost given his teammate a chance to win the game in it's dying seconds.

What a game between these two teams, and what a third period for Kelowna as they fought their way back to snatch an overtime win.
After allowing two power play goals in the 2nd period to fumble away their 2-1 lead, Kelowna found themselves at a goal and shot disadvantage entering the 3rd period. Newfoundland were simply looking like the better team. Then, as if a switch was flipped, the Knights put the squeeze on Newfoundland, with a ridiculous 12 shot advantage over a 3rd period that saw them tie the game up. In fact, if not for the Berserkers picking up a goal on one of their four total shots for the period, Kelowna would have won this one in regulation. Still, after their 3rd period performance, they were unable to capitalize in overtime. It seemed they re-discovered their talents for the shootout, however, as Rocco Berni was able to give them the 1-0 shootout victory. (160)

The Turning Point:

Looking at the flow of this game, it's clear that the Knights were sparked by Adam Scianna's huge tying goal early in the third. There's something about watching one of your D-men blast home a key goal from the point that really gets your legs moving. After two close periods, it was here that the Knights took over and dominated possession time totalling 16 shots in the third alone. This barrage gave them enough firepower to tie the game, and enough momentum to carry them through to a big two points in the shootout. Were it not for some incredible work from Berserkers starter Steven Vassallo, they would have almost certainly dropped their lead, as well as some key points.

1. My turning point of the game was right after the Kelowna Knights scored a second goal to take a 2-1 lead. After scoring two goals within 20 seconds, they had gained a great deal of momentum. They weren't looking like slowing down, but Kalevolaripaavo Kaspertommevisnapuu took it upon himself to purposely trip Johnny Patey. This seemingly "minor" penalty allowed the Newfoundland Berserkers to win the subsequent faceoff and score directly following this sequence. This game-tying goal completely halted any momentum that the Knights had gained and the tides turned in favor of the Berskerkers, who even scored a third goal this period to take the lead.

2. The unsung hero of this game has to be Andrey Barbashev II, who was completely deserving of the first star. Barbashev started on that first line for the Kelowna Knights and put in an incredible first two periods, but unfortunately his team was behind 2-3 going into the final period. He supplied a wonderful assist for Adam Scianna just four minutes into the third period, tying the game once again. Within 3 minutes, Newfoundland had reclaimed the lead. Andrey Barbashev II did not give up. He was clawing tooth and nail to fight for a chance to at least get to OT. Then with just three minutes remaining in the period, Andrey comes up with his second assist of the game. Shepard scored the game-tying goal that sent the game to OT (and later a shootout), but Andrey Barbashav II was lacking in credit.

3. The highlight of the game for me is Rocco Berni's superb shootout goal to win the game for the Kelowna Knights. Kalevolaripaavo Kaspertommevisnapuu, (Clean) Andrei Kostitsyn, Thomas Vanice, Andrey Barbashev II, and Cody all failed to score in the shootout. But Berni, the young rookie, took it upon himself to put the game (and his team) on his back and carry the Knights to victory. As he skated towards the puck, he was brimming with confidence. His head was down and there was a glint in his eyes that exuded a confidence that veteran players have. Berni skated down the right at a blistering pace before cutting inside. Forehand, backhand, forehand. Steven Vassallo was just as clueless as the fans watching as to where Berni was going to shoot. He slid across his goal just as Rocco Berni slotted the puck through the five-hole and the rookie dabbed as he skated away.

Was Ryan Shepard truly deserving of 1st Star?

The older SMJHL star earned 1st star honors after scoring a goal, getting 2 hits and going 16/25 in the faceoff circle, all wrapped with a nice +2 on the day. There’s no denying the fact that he had a significant role to play in Kelowna’s fantastic and hard earned win today but at the same time, he had taken 7 shots. Yes, 7. He operated as a vacuum essentially, shooting anything that came his way at Steven Vassallo. Alternatively I would have considered Adam Scianna for 1st star, he had more minutes played, was much more efficient with 1 goal on 2 shots, and to top it all off, showed some strong defensive ability with 2 shots blocked. He truly showcase an all around game and in my opinion was more deserving of the honor than Ryan Shepard.

What a finish by Kelowna

Kelowna entered the 3rd period down 2 goals to 3 against the Berserkers but following an amazing 20 minutes where they outshot their opponents by a ratio of 16 to 4 in dazzling fashion in order to tie the game up at 4. This would result in the game going into OT, and then subsequently, a shootout. This third period would turn the tide for Kelowna as it gave them a much needed momentum boost following a rather sloppy first 2 periods where they had surrendered 3 goals in 17 shots and had a combined 15 shots (They would go on to have 16 in the third period alone)

Unsung Heroes
You may not want to hear it, hell you might not want to see him on the ice for your team but today, Gregory Stiemsma played a crucial role in the 2 minutes and 37 seconds he saw the ice in. Every second of his glorious 157 was breathtaking as he showcased his glorious skating and puck handling ability. Dangling through the defence constantly and giving opposing teams headaches with the man advantage, Stiemsma truly showed off his amazing ability with a beautiful pass to Slatt Potts to set up the first goal of the game. It was a glorious moment and one that would remain memorable for Gregory for his first assist of the season.

Rematch:
This was only the 2nd game of the year for both teams, and it just so happened to be a rematch of their first game the previous night. The Berserkers took game 1 in a close game, 4-3, and we're expecting another close game in this rematch too. If Kelowna wants to walk away with a win this time, the key to the game for them will be figuring out a method to deal with the top defensive pairing of Newfoundland. And I don't just mean scoring on them. In the previous game, Akira Ren and Disisde Dayudie combined for an astonishing 7 points, including 4 assists by Dayudie. This game we're also paying attention for any emotions that are still spilling over from last game, which had 9 penalties, including some nasty boarding hits, cross checks, high sticks, and a goalie interference that sparked a heavy scrum.

Very special teams:
As we predicted in the pre-game analysis, this game was scrappy, emotional, and possibly the beginning of a very physical rivalry forming between the two teams. We had more high sticking penalties, and in the 3rd period there was some Finn on Finn violence when Antti Antinen cleaned Jukka Timonen's clock, causing Jakob Hamr to retaliate with a beating and a subsequent roughing penalty. At the end of the day, Newfoundland vastly benefited from the scrappy game, scoring on an impressive 60% (3 of 5) of their powerplays, while Kelowna couldn't muster up a single goal on the special teams. In fact, Newfoundland only scored one even strength goal in the game, and the game could have gotten away from them greatly without the special teams advantage.

Players that deserve a mention:
This was a close game, and most players played a great game and executed their roles well. That being said, I think there's a handful of players that didn't get listed in the 3 stars that deserve mentioning. Starting with Kelowna, Andrey Barbashev II begins the list with 2 assists in the game, but his 2 penalties probably kept him off the 3 stars list. Rocco Berni also earned a specific shout out for his play, getting as assist on the first game tying goal, while also netting the only goal of the shootout and thus the game winner. For the Berserkers, Slatt Potts had himself a great night in the offensive end, getting a goal and an assist with only 12 and a half minutes of ice time. Rookie defenseman Jukka Timonen also added a goal and assist himself, while rookie Gregory Stiemsma will force Newfoundland's coach to re-think the line deployment, as he scored a goal in only 2 and a half minutes of playing time.

ACE'S CRANKIN HITS!

Welcome back to another edition of Ace's Crankin Hits. We're here for the tilt in Newfoundland where the Knights are visiting. This was a tightly contested game that eventually went to the visitors in the shootout. There was no shortage of body contact, and that's what we are here for! Take a look at this viscous, high hit on Thomas Vanice by Noah Nystrom. I thought he may be a little dizzy after that one, but he was none the worse for wear! Great stuff!

Both Kelowna and the Newfies are going to wake up in the morning and need a little something special in their coffee with all these bumps and bruises!

The and not so set plays

Not too often do you see set plays executed perfectly in such a fluid game but with 8 goals to talk about, there's bound to be some planned ahead success and the more chaotic ones that we all love in this sport:

Okabe with the give and go
Winning the faceoff in the 6th minute of the 3rd period, Okabe gets the puck right back from Hamr and scores to give the Berserkers the 4-3 lead.

Gregory Stiemsma with the give?...

Despite spending all 2:37 of his ice time on the powerplay, Stiemesma made the most of it though he has to admit that his assist was more of an accident than anything. Coming into the Knight's zone, he fumbled the puck and somebody it eluded all the Knight's defenders with Slatts Potts waiting wide open and uncovered. Skillful pass or lucky attempt? Chalk it up to both.

1. Wow, what a big game for rookie Rocco Berni (yes I'm gonna hype my own player up). Very early in his SMJHL career, Berni notched his first point of his career. But that wasn't all he was responsible for in this game. When it came down to crunch time, the Knights coach looked down the bench and put his trust in the young Swiss man in the shootout. Talk about nerves of steel, folks. In hindsight, this was only the beginning of a fairly successful rookie campaign for the centre, as he was able to put up 22 points for Kelowna with limited minutes from the third line.

2. This is what we love to see in the SMJHL: a high-energy, high goal scoring affair. With eight total goals, this was a thrilling game for the neutral hockey fan. The third period especially was a roller coaster for everyone in the arena, with the Knights scoring the tying goal with less than . four minutes remaining on the clock. And what better players to be involved in the game-tying marker than a few of Kelowna's most well known players? Ryan Shepard got his season off to a strong start in this one, wiht his second finish on the season. The goal came courtesy of a wonderful Andrey Barbashev II feed, and set the Knights up for their eventual shootout victory.

3. We can't discuss this game without touching on the impact that Knights forward Ebenezer Virtanen had on this game, although it was anything but spectacular. Virtanen had a breathtaking ninety seconds of show time in tonight's game, and was even able to somehow get a shot off in this short appearance. That shot was one added to the total for the Knights, so most of his impact was on the opposing goalie's save percentage. Realistically, it probably wasn't much more than a flip shot that miraculously made it to the net. On the negative side however, he lost the only faceoff that he took. Come on Eb.
