Game Link

Good evening Ladies and Gentlemen and welcome to the St. Louis Scarecrows Post Game Show. We've got highlights coming up from tonight's thrilling match-up versus the Anchorage Armada. There were a lot of highlights in this one folks, so hold on and let's dive right into it.

First Period:

Just 27 seconds into the game, James Ronlain breaks the ice! His first shot gets blocked by Jay Reeves but he collects the loose puck and blasts it home past Ian Venables. Not to be outdone, at 2:10 defenceman Ulrik Bergstrom steals the puck from Ronlain and skates it into the Crows zone, pass to Stan Hanson who slips it behind Elizabeth Doyle to tie the game! Venables seems to be giving up a lot of rebounds but so far the Crows haven't been able to pounce on it. Seven minutes in, Axel Meszaros intercepts a pass and clears it out of the Scarecrows zone.. passes up to Ruslan Zaporozhets into the Anchorage zone, back to Axel and St Louis sets up the cycle passing around the zone, finally Ruslan is open for the one timer and he rockets one past Venables to make it 2-1. At 17:26, Jay Reeves takes a minor penalty for holding and St Louis goes on the power play. Venables makes a couple stops and Anchorage is able to clear the zone. They ice the puck and it's collected by Doyle behind the net. Pass to Flash Gordon who finds a streaking Danny Marston headed up the ice, he skates all the way into the Anchorage zone and puts a shot glove side high on Venables. That's a powerplay goal at 19:18 to make it 3-1. St. Louis wins the faceoff and that's the end of the first period.

End of 1: St. Louis 3, Anchorage 1

Second Period:

The second period starts with the same intensity as the first. Right off the opening faceoff, Cyril Viskoc wins the opening faceoff and sends a feed to Augustus Wang who skates into the zone untouched and at just 4 seconds into the period rockets one past Doyle. She wasn't ready for that one apparently. That pulls Anchorage within one, but things quickly go South as 45 seconds later Ruslan slams a second one past Venables to make it 4-2 St Louis, just 50 seconds into the 2nd Period. Anchorage pulls Ian Venables at this point and puts in Sergei Potinov. The goalie change seems to have settled them down as 6 minutes in Stan Hanson puts his second past Doyle and pulls Anchorage within 1 yet again to make it 4-3. The teams go back and forth for a little bit and then 9 minutes in Ruslan takes a shot and misses the net, but then collects his own loose puck and stuffs it in on the wrap-around! Did he do that on purpose? That's his third of the game and the hats come raining down here in St. Louis! Both teams got powerplay opportunities in the second half of the period but neither were able to convert.

End of 2: St. Louis 5, Anchorage 3

Third Period:

Two minutes into the 3rd period and the 4th liners are out there getting some time, Yamamato Mitsuharu takes a shot and it deflects off Brooks Wayne but right to Eric Hudson who directs on net! Potinov lost track of it with the deflection and it's in! That's Hudson's first SMJHL goal! He'll remember that one forever. St Louis is up 2 goals now and firmly in control. Five minutes in and St Louis is firmly intrenched in the Anchorage zone. Ruslan takes a shot looking for another marker, misses the net but Ronlain scoops up the loose puck and pokes it behind Potinov who was looking the wrong way. Funky bounce off the end board there. St. Louis is up 7-3 now. Anchorage takes their timeout to talk it over and it looks like they are pulling Potinov and putting Venables back in. You don't see that very often. Eleven minutes in and Cyril Viskoc tries to take things into his own hands, stealing the puck from Ruslan and skating up the ice. Anchorage sets up in the zone and cycles it around, back to Viskoc who peppers a one-timer past Doyle. She got a glove on it but not quite enough to stop it. Once again both teams get powerplay opportunities at the end of the period but neither team can cash in and that's how this game is going to end.

End of 3: St. Louis 7, Anchorage 4 - Final Score.

Loss - Sergei Potvinov (ANC), 8 saves from 11 shots - (0.727), 24:10 minutes

1. The Armada have got to get their defense in order. Only 13 shots for the entire game is unacceptable by any metric. These are the defending SMJHL champions and yet St Louis ran circles around them with seemingly very little effort resistance. While it is always incredibly helpful to have an excellent goalie like Ian Venables in net, that is not always going to be the chase. If I am the coach or the GM of the Armada, I am putting increased emphasis on defensive drills and not stopping until these mistakes are thoroughly cleared up because that is just embarrassing.

2. Having said all of that, when Anchorage did get some attacking time, they did not waste it. Scoring on 4 of the 13 shots is a pretty outstanding turn of events considering all that happened this game. Also considering that the scorers were pretty mixed throughout the line-up shows that the Armada has the depth and hunger for another cup run should they clear up the defensive issues that plagued them this game. Judging by previous performances, this game does indeed seem like an outlier in the grand scheme of things but one can never be too careful in a league as cutthroat as this one.

3. The Anchorage rookie line of Santtu Rasanen, Chris de Siren and Braden Lowrie seem to be gelling together nicely and developing into a nice unit. While none of the rookie trio had their best games tonight, they were the best line on the ice as far as defensive work went, only allowing one goal in their 16 minutes of ice time together which no matter how you slice it is very impressive for rookies. As Free Agent signing Rasanen gets more comfortable in the lineup and the rookies have more time to spend playing together, they should be able to have a quick turnaround in regards to points.

Faceoff Fumble

It was a rough night for Alex Reyer of the St Louis Scarecrows. Just 3 of the 14 faceoffs for Reyer went his way, an absolutely abysmal performance when the rest of his team were at the top of their game. Reyer is the weakest of the centers on his team, but still manages a respectable 50% on the season. This is certainly a night to forget for him, with no points put up and a +/- of -1. Luckily his team was able to put up enough points that the minutiae of the game were irrelevant. And that's all I have to say about that.

Second Line Silver Linings

Two players on Anchorage would grab 3 points in today's game. Stan Hanson would net 2 goals and 1 assists for the Anchorage Armada, and Cyril Vyskoc 1 goal and 2 assists. Neither feature in the 3 stars because of a dominant scarecrow performance, but if lines could win a star this would be it. The defense held together, keeping a positive +/- and leaving all the blame for the loss on that top line. There's definitely something working between these 5 players, and it will be exciting going forward to see how they improve the Armada's game.

This game was a dominant performance for St. Louis on both sides of the puck independent of what the score might suggest. The Scarecrows put 37 shots on goal and allowed the Armada just 13. That 24 shot advantage allowed the Scarecrows plenty of cushion, and they needed every bit of it, as the final score was a head-scratching 7-4. St. Louis scored at nearly a 20% clip while firing off an average of more than 12 shots per period. Their defense held Anchorage to just 13 total shots (an average of 4.33 per period), but was slightly let down by an out of character day from Elizabeth Doyle, who allowed 4 of Anchorage's 13 shots to find net. Still, because of their ability to put continuous pressure on Anchorage, St. Louis was able to win this one comfortably. (143)

Comment 1:
"Lowlights" sponsored by Leidos:

Your lowlight of the night for this one goes to Daniel Bischoff of the Anchorage Armada. It was a rough night for Bischoff in the defensive zone as he was part of a line that took a big ole minus-three at even strength. The first line winger's only positive contributions on the night were a single shot on goal and one shot block. Ruslan Zaporozhets of the Scarecrows was giving Bischoff and company fits the entire game, eventually netting a hat trick plus one assist. The majority of that damage unfortunately for the Armada coming against their top line. Your top line cant score if they're playing defense all night.

Comment 2:
Top passer presented by Panasonic:

The choice was very easy for the crew here. The best playmaker and passer in this game was Flash Gordon of St. Louis. Ruslan Zaporozhets might get all of the headlines as goal scorers often do, but Gordon racked up four assists getting to 13 total on the season. As the name insinuates, Gordon loves to create chances off the rush and opens up defenses with his lightning quick feet. The Armada were having an off night defensively to begin with and Gordon exposed those deficiencies early and often, factoring in on all three of St. Louis' first period strikes.

Comment 1: Highlights

Incredible effort from Anchorage's Stan Hanson to tuck it in behind St. Louis net-minder Elizabeth Doyle at 2:10 of the first Period.

Sergei Potvinov with excellent play stopping Alex Meszaros after coming into the game just 3 minutes prior (4:00min in the 2nd)

Hats streaming down from the home crowd in St. Louis as Ruslan Zaporozhets nets his third goal in the 2nd. His 6th overall of the season, an amazing performance.

Comment 2: Potvinov left out to dry.
Sergei Potvinov deserves more credit for his performance in this game, and yes I do know that his save percentage was in the low 700s. .727 in fact is a horrid stat but I think this needs more examination and context to understand why his performance was actually above what was expected. This game as a whole was a goalies worst nightmare, funny enough the goalie with the best stats this match was the one pulled 50 seconds into the 2nd with veteran Ian Venables saving 22/26 shots for a total of .846. If you look at the opponents who dominated the game the Scarecrows goalie Doyle only had a save percentage of .692. This was a forwards game first and foremost. Defense was out the window, and to be able to put up the numbers he did, Potvinov had to make some incredible saves on the red-hot scarecrows with Ruslan Zaprozhets taking no quarter. I look forward to seeing how Potvinov develops because the potential for greatness is certainly there despite what a cursory glance at the game may say about his performance.

Episode 2 of Week 2! ACE’S CRANKIN HITS! We’re here in St. Louis where the Crows are in a tilt against the Anchorage Boat Mafia. The Crows came out swinging and beat the Armada by a score of 7-4, and they beat the everloving shit out of them on the ice too! Take a look at this COLOSSAL hit by Luc-Pierre Lespineau-Leb on Berry Blue.

What a beautiful hit. He dumped Berry Blue right into the god damn bench! You could see the Crows bench taking their liberties when their visitor dropped in uninvited. I love this shit! Don’t you?

1) An overall defensive struggle for Anchorage shows in a first period flurry of goals leaving Anchorage down by 2 by the end of the first.  Defensive struggles notwithstanding, Potvinov played well in goal for the Armada, but with a lack of support from the get go, the stats are skewed against him.  St. Louis however had an outstanding game with Zaporozhets netting a hat trick in what would eventually be an offensive beating on Anchorage. Definitely deserving of a first star for the game, Zaporozhets showing his scoring chops with his sixth of the season is starting out strong for the Scarecrows.

2) Yet again Anchorage struggled in the faceoff circle winning only 42 of 87 faceoffs putting them at sub 50% again, something they've struggled to break early on in the season. Alongside those issues came the issue of discipline, with Anchorage giving up five penalties to the Scarecrows though only giving up one goal to the Power Play of the Scarecrows. The Scarecrows seemed to have issues entering the zone during the Power Play, they looked almost aimless as time and again Anchorage managed to clear the zone.  Although they managed to convert one attempt, the Scarecrows do have plenty of work ahead of them.

3) To say Anchorage struggled in net tonight would be an unfortunate understantement for an Armada team that has been plagued by inconsistent goaltending and defensive awareness thus far this season.  Yet again Sergei Potvinov struggled to maintain composure throughout the game as well as Ian Venables with an almost tandem workload tonight with Ian starting and entering the game in the third period as well. Although both goalies have had issues so far this season, Sergei and Ian have both plenty of support missing from the third line as yet again the struggles mount for a third line seemingly always missing a beat.

Comment 1: Who needs goaltending anyway?

If you like watching great goalie duels, this is not the game for you. Ian Venables got the start for Anchorage and allowed a goal to James Ronlain just 27 seconds into the game, and it seemed to have rattled him, as the Scarecrows led 3-1 after the first period. After a quick Armada goal to make it a one-goal game, the momentum swung back immediately when Venables allowed a quick goal to Ruslan Zaporozhets just fifty seconds into the second period and was pulled. Backup Sergei Potvinov came in and surrendered three more goals in 24 minutes of work before Venables mercifully came back in for garbage time, although to be fair, it's never easy for a backup to come in cold on a night like this where the forwards are on fire. On the other side, Elizabeth Doyle was horrible, giving up four goals on only 13 shots, including a quick shot by Augustus Wang just four seconds into the second period. Credit must be given to the Scarecrows defensive front for realizing that their goalie was having an off night and keeping the Armada from getting shots on net.

Comment 2: Unsung Hero: Flash Gordon, STL - 4 A, +2, 22:09 TOI, 4:07 TOI

Gordon is an incredible offensive weapon from the back end, and he showed it here by putting up four assists. He was snubbed for the Three Stars, but he definitely earned an honourable mention. The Scarecrows were getting shots on goal on special teams all night, and a big part of that was Gordon's ability to find the open man with his passing and vision. He's a talent that every team will need to gameplan for when facing St. Louis this season, because if you give Flash Gordon time and space with the puck, he will inevitably find one of his offensively gifted teammates for great scoring chances and goals.

Comment 3: An Unexpected Talent - Stan Hanson, ANC - 2 G, 1 A, +2

Stan Hanson of the Anchorage Armada is mostly known for being the team goon, but he showed off some pretty nice offensive chops at crucial times here for the Armada, popping in his second and third goals of the season against a stout Scarecrows defense that wasn't giving up much in the way of scoring chances. Hanson was arguably Anchorage's MVP in this game, as his first goal helped get them out of an early hole they had fallen into after James Ronlain's goal, and his second came with a cold backup goalie in Sergei Potvinov playing for Anchorage and needing a goal to get the team back into the game. Being +2 in a pretty bad defensive game for his team isn't too shabby either. Not bad for a guy whose biggest impact on the scoresheet usually comes in the categories of hits and penalty minutes.
