Hello all and welcome to the Post Game Show from the SMJHL league offices here in beautiful Toronto, Ontario, Canada! We have a great defensive showcase to show tonight as the Anchorage Armada played host to the Anaheim Outlaws! Let's get into the action in Anchorage!

Period 1
Goals:
1. Anaheim Outlaws , Ivan Maximus 3 (Ursin Zimmermann 4, Rhys Pritchard 6) at 9:26 (SH)

Penalties:
Ethan Price (ANA) for High sticking (Double Minor) at 6:33
Yompy Stearf (ANA) for Roughing (Minor) at 19:39

Shots:
Outlaws : 8
Armada : 8

After one period of hockey, we have a very even game with both teams matched on shots on goal, the only really big difference being the short handed goal from the Outlaws, scored by Texas prospect Ivan Maximus, assisted by two North Star prospects in Ursin Zimmerman and Rhys Pritchard. The two goalies have been holding tough for their teams and the two offenses seem to be struggling to create a lot of big chances so far.

Period 2
Goals:
None

Penalties:
Augustus Wang (ANC) for Hooking (Minor) at 3:16

Shots:
Outlaws : 8
Armada : 5

Another period, and another excellent display of defense from both sides as neither team was able to get a goal. Goalies Ian Venables and Separa Borro both have been playing well for their teams as they managed to shutout the other team in this period. The only other thing of note, was the hooking penalty taken by the Armada's Augustus Wang, but the Outlaws weren't able to make them pay.

Period 3
Goals:
2. Anaheim Outlaws , C.T. Carragher 5 (Leonid Kofix 9) at 6:30
3. Anchorage Armada , Jay Reeves 5 (Braden Lowrie 4, Santtu Rasanen 2) at 17:20

Penalties:
Andreas Stacks (ANA) for Hooking (Minor) at 1:36
Mitchell van der Heijden (ANC) for Slashing (Minor) at 10:22

Shots:
Outlaws : 8
Armada : 13

Goalie Stats:
Separa Borro (ANA), 24 saves from 25 shots - (0.960), W, 4-2-1, 60:00 minutes
Ian Venables (ANC), 22 saves from 24 shots - (0.917), L, 4-4-1, 58:35 minutes

In the final frame of play, we finally get some offensive action as the two teams both grab goals. Early in the 3rd period, Outlaws winger CT Carragher scores his fifth goal on the season six and a half minutes into the period putting the Outlaws two goals to the good after some bumpy waters after Andreas Stacks took a penalty less than two minutes into the crucial final period of play. However, the stress wasn't over for the Outlaws as Jay Reeves scored with less than three minutes left in the game to pull the Armada with in one goal of tying the game, but the last gasp effort wasn't enough as Borro held the Outlaws in the lead as he saw 13 shots in the period only allowing one goal.

3 Stars
1 - Ivan Maximus (ANA)
2 - Separa Borro (ANA)
3 - C.T. Carragher (ANA)

Stellar Goalie Play

Both goalies played exceptionally well in this one and kept the game close with save after save in crucial situations throughout the game. Separa Borro (ANA) and Ian Venables (ANC) are two talented goaltenders at very different points in their respective juniors careers. Borro is a rookie drafted  this before season by Anaheim in the 7th round at pick #63. Venables on the other hand is playing in his 4th season for the Armada. Tonight, the rookie played well enough to beat the veteran as Borro stopped 24 of the 25  shots (0.960). Venables also had a great game, stopping 22 of 24 (0.917) but ultimately fell to 4-4-1 on the season. Borro earned his 4th win of the year (4-2-1) and was the 2nd Star of the game.

Turning Point

The game felt like it became out of reach for Anchorage when early in the third period the Outlaw’s CT Carragher scored to put Anaheim up by two. Separa Borro had stopped every shot he’d seen at this point in the game, including eight minutes of short handed time, and seemed to be getting better as the night went on. Venables also very well played well and kept his team in the game with a number of key saves. After regrouping, the Armada kept pressing and eventually narrowed the deficit to one on a Jay Reeves goal with three minutes to go in the game.  It ultimately wasn’t enough to overcome the deficit, as Separa Borro wasn’t seriously tested for the rest of the game.

Unsung Heroes

Kevin Robinson, 2nd line center for the Anaheim Outlaws, won 15 of 25 face offs (60%) and was active on both the penalty kill and power play. He continuously made the effort to get the puck to the net, trying to generate a rebound or some sort of offensive chance and ended the game with 8 shots. The Anchorage 3rd line played well tonight and factored in on the Armada’s only goal of the night. Anchorage’s Santtu Rasanen won the face off to Braden Lowrie who snapped a quick shot on Separa Borro. Borro kicked out a big rebound that made its way to a crashing Jay Reeves who banged it home.

1) A nice solid defensive battle for this game. Both teams did an excellent job in their respective defensive zones to keep the game exciting with lots of battles on the boards and tons of hits with Nicholas Owens taking an edge on everyone else with 5 hits by the time the game ended. The Outlaws once again had Anchorage's number as they've done the past two games and now are 3-0 on the season against them thus far. They've mostly been all defensive battles with every game having been won with just 2 goals. Both teams are going to need to work on their Power Play if they intend on pulling through in the playoffs.

2) Nicholas Owens was a bright spot in this defensive battle paired up with Ursin Zimmermann on Anaheim's top defensive pairing. With five hits, a blocked shot, and 23:28 played, he was a workhorse and crucial in Anaheim's win over Anchorage. He did a fantastic job at making sure Anchorage's forwards couldn't penetrate the zone easily and when they did they were harrassed with proficiency not normally seen from Junior defensemen.  Kevin Robinson was another bright spot for Anaheim as he managed to score 15 faceoff wins to 25 attempts taken, giving him a wide margin over Anchorage's centermen, a feat that has not been hard to top as of late for teams playing against Anchorage.

3) The goalies lastly were the ultimate stars tonight as yet again they displayed a great skillset in stopping almost equal amounts of shots with Ian Venables stopping 22 of 24 shots, and Separa Borro stopping 24 of 25. Yet again the battle ultimately was in Anaheim's favor but Ian managed to play better than the stats show too. One crucial moment was during the power play, Rhys Pritchard won a faceoff against Mitchell van der Heijden in the Armada zone which then generated a goal from Ivan Maximus which ended up being Short Handed. Due to the continuing struggles on faceoffs for the Armada, this goal could have been prevented had their struggles been addressed by now.

Questionable Double-Minor Avenged - At 6:33 of the first period, rookie Ethan Price was whistled for a high-sticking penalty. Immediately following the penalty, Armada center, Santtu Rasanen, skated away holding his face with both gloves, and he headed straight to the Anchorage locker room. The officials weren't able to get a look at Rasanen's face, but decided to call Price for a double-minor because it resulted in a injury. Rasanen returned to the bench 10 seconds after the ensuing faceoff with no signs of an injury, and a smirk on his face. However, Anaheim was able to deliver with an inspiring kill. Anchorage was only able to manage one shot on goal during the powerplay, and Anaheim's Ivan Maximus was eventually able to put the Outlaws ahead with a shorthanded goal on the back end of the double-minor.

Anchorage Shooting Woes - There was one sequence early in the 2nd period that epitomized the rest of the game for Anchorage. Just over a minute into the period, the Armada began to fire everything they could at the Anaheim netminder, Separa Borro, during a powerplay that carried over from the end of the first period. The only problem is that Borro did not actually have to make any saves during the wild sequence. First off, Anchorage's Augustus Wang was somehow able to completely miss the net twice within two seconds. While the Armada would regain control in the offensive zone, Anaheim's Ursin Zimmerman and Alex Petrenko were able to come up with two huge blocked shots. Mitchell van der Heijden, of the Armada, was able to collect the loose puck, but he too managed to miss the net twice within two seconds. Anaheim was able to clear the puck and kill off the rest of the penalty, which set the tone for what would be a scoreless 2nd period.

Jay Reeves Spoils the Shutout - With just under three minutes to go in the 3rd period, Anchorage's Jay Reeves was able to slot one past the Anaheim goaltender, Separa Borro. Borro had been stellar the entire game, and it didn't look like anything could get past him. But the Armada delivered one final push to spark a comeback. After Santtu Rasanen won the faceoff in the offensive zone, there was an onslaught of shots from the Armada. Braden Lowrie attempted to stuff a couple attempts past Borro, but he was rejected by the left pad. Unfortunately, Borro gave up a rebound and Jay Reeves was able to elevate the puck over the outstretched glove of the Anaheim netminder. The shutout was spoiled, but Anchorage wasn't able to do much else for the remainder of the game, so the Outlaws were able to get out of Alaska with a 2-1 victory.

This was a very even game from a statistical standpoint. Total shots were 24  to 25 in favor of the Armada. The penalties overall were 3 for the outlaws and 2 for the Armada. The goals scored were in favor of the outlaws. Anaheim had a tough break with Ivan Maximus scoring a shorthanded goal just about halfway through the period. Nobody was able to score on the Powerplay throughout the game. Both third period goals were scored at even strength. Anaheim put up a consistent 8 shots per period. While Anchorage put more shots on goal in the third period than they did the first and second period. This was a low scoring game, so both goalies put up great save percentages as well, coming in over the .90 mark.

Defensive affair
C.T. Carragher continued his hot streak from the last two games and scored the game winning goal to lead Anaheim back into the win column after a quick two game losing streak. Separa Borro made 24 of 25 stops for his 4th win of the season. Both teams were perfect on the penalty kill, and Anaheim took advantage of sloppy powerplay work by Anchorage. Rhys Pritchard won an offensive zone faceoff on the penalty kill, and two touches later, Ivan Maximus scored on a redirect from Ursin Zimmerman, opening the scoring.  Limiting high danger chances, Anaheim buckled down and kept the lead until Carragher doubled their lead early in the 3rd period with his game winner.

Bounce Back Game
Separa Borro had a bounce back game after weak games to get back into the win column. After letting in 5 goals against Vancouver and 4 goals against Newfoundland, Borro buckled down and shut the door for most of the game, until an errant shot by Jay Reeves found the back of the net late in the 3rd period to spoil the shutout for Borro. Borro had an amazing sequence midway through the third period with Anchorage pushing hard, deflecting a wrist shot from Daniel Bischoff labeled for the far side corner, and stacking the pads against Augustus Wang before falling on the puck to keep the Outlaws up by 2.

3 Stars
Ivan Maximus captured the first star of the game, scoring a short-handed goal on 3 shots on net in 21 minutes of ice-time. His exemplary work on the penalty kill helped him earn him top honors tonight. Separa Borro earned the second star of the game in a back and forth affair stop 24 of 25 shots for a stellar 0.960 sv%, giving him a record of 4-2-1 in his 7 games played, rallying from his previous two losses. C.T. Carragher’s blast from the left face off circle through traffic earned him the third star of the game as he continues he extends his points streak to 3 games.

Battle in the Standings is Heating Up

With the season a third of the way over the standings near the top of the SMJHL have begun to tighten up. Anaheim and Anchorage, sitting third and fourth in the standings fought a contested affair. Anaheim comes in on somewhat of a hotstreak scoring points in 7 of their last 8 games, which includes 5 wins. They were slow out of the gate this year but they are right back in the thick of things after the win tonight. Anchorage stays in 4th place and will look to get back in the win column after back to back losses. Anaheim holds the season series 3-0-0.

Backup Goalie Shines

Many fans were worried when they heard that Strohm Chamberlain was going to miss some time. The normal backstop night in and night out for Anaheim was currently called up to the SHL to get some exposure to the show. While the team has been playing decent enough without him Sbarro was doing his best to step up. With a record of 3-2-1, Sbarro had been getting the job done in the in the Win column but his .880 save percentage was a more telling story of his struggles. He put that to rest in this game saving 24 of 25 shots for a .960 save percentage.

Owens Pounds Armada

Nicholas Owens has made a career bringing the pain and playing stout defense and tonight was no different. He was dishing out punishment to anyone trying to get near the crease and making it hard for any Anchorage players to get a shot off. He paced the game with 5 hits and was key to helping limit the opposition to just 12 shots through the first two periods. Owens also helped kill 4 penalties and was on the ice for one shorthanded goal. Anaheim has been very good on the Powerplay and Penalty kill this year, and Owens has helped by enforcing his aggression on other teams so far this season.
