Scarecrows St Louis Scarecrows vs Anchorage Armada  Armada

St Louis and Anchorage clash once again in the Sullivan Center. These two teams, both aiming for deep playoff runs are looking for more momentum as the season continues. Both teams have struggled in this season and no one is truly sure as to why. Both teams feature talented offensives and the same strong play that they showcased last season. One thing is for sure though, these teams are struggling but not for lack of trying as this game would showcase. A brutal matchup that was back and forth the entire way. Let’s see how this one shook out:

PERIOD 1:

St Louis went out early to try and push around the Armada with strong offensive presence but unlike previous games, Anchorage would not let the Scarecrows push them around. Both teams fought each other hard and got good chances each but neither could truly capitalize. Both goalies were excellent in this period but then in the span of 15 seconds, the game changed. St Louis would get on the board first with a beautiful goal by Danny Marston, his 8th of the campaign. James Ronlain managed to get Ian Venables out of position long enough for Marston to collect the rebound and score the goal. Anchorage however, responded in kind. Led by reigning MVp Daniel Bischoff, the top line of Anchorage countered back and Mitchell van der Heijden scored a beautiful one timer to even up the score going into the break.

Score:
Scarecrows 1-1  Armada

Period 2:

As intense as the first period was, the second period made it look like a Peewee game in comparison. 27 shots were recorded in the period as both teams played like their lives depended on it. Just this one period alone convinced many in the crowd that if Anchorage and St Louis met in the playoffs, it would go seven games and be a glorious series. Even with all the intensity and fire, only one goal was scored. Ruslan Zaporozhets would take advantage of the relative inexperience of Anchorage’s rookie line (Santtu Rasanen, Braden Lowrie and Chris de Siren) and grab a beautiful goal from James Ronlain, it would be Ruslan’s 9th on the season. Anchorage, despite taking a penalty late, kept fighting onward and tried as best they could to even the score but the period ended with the Armada on the back foot.

Score:
Scarecrows 2-1  Armada

Period 3:

Despite playing two physically exhausting, emotionally draining periods of hockey, The Armada came out like a Cannon blast. They literally threw themselves at the Scarecrows, battering them with shot after shot. Finally, after 5 minutes of intensive play, the Armada tied the game. Danny White collected his own rebound and slotted it past Jason Voorhees for his 7th on the year and a tie game. The scarecrows found their footing after the goal and fought back hard with Danny Marston once again making himself know in proceedings and scoring his 9th of the season, once again the scarecrows taking advantage of the Rookie Line of Anchorage. Then Mega Tron took a Roughing Penalty and it was like Anchorage decided that this would be where they made their final stand. They threw themselves at Vorhees and found their opening. In a shockingly similar way as the first period, van der Heijden scored his 2nd goal of the evening, 10th of the season and tied the game at 3. Both sides wouldn’t give each other an inch but the goalies played lights out hockey after this and forced the game into Overtime.

Score:

Scarecrows 3-3  Armada

OT:

It was finally here, after 60 minutes of intense play where we saw both teams fade. Only 1 shot recorded on target for each team as many shots went well wide of the net. These warriors were exhausted but tried desperately to keep the fires alive for victory. After 5 minutes, the score was still tied and thus, the game went to the Shootout

SO:

The game would be decided here and both goalies, tired and battered had to find one more gear. In this instance, the veteran presence of Ian Venables shone through. Ruslan Zaporozhets would miss the net with his shot while van der Heijden would score. Trey Nets just barely beat Venables but Daniel Bischoff responded with a goal of his own. Round 3 loomed at the Scarecrows had one last chance. James Ronlain came in with whatever speed he had left but Ian Venables would make a beautiful pad save, ending this intense game with a well-deserved win for the Armada.

Final Score:

Scarecrows 3-4  Armada

3 Stars:

1 - Danny Marston (STL)
2 - Mitchell van der Heijden (ANC)
3 - James Ronlain (STL)

"Lowlights" sponsored by Leidos:

Your lowlight of the night for this one goes to Mega Tron of the St. Louis Scarecrows. It was a rough night for the Scarecrows right winger as in 18:02 of total ice time, Tron came up empty on the scoresheet in terms of points, but filled it when it comes to penalties. Tron took both a holding and a roughing penalty for four total minutes in the box on the night to go along with a minus performance at five-on-five. The Scarecrows needed more from that second line that also includes Aron Hernadvic and Trey Nets if they were going to win this hockey game.

Armada's Venables Unsung Star of the Game

While the three stars went to others tonight, Armada goalie Ian Venables came up huge in a game where the defense did not have their best night.  Venables stopped 42 of the 45 shots that came his way and pulled through in the shootout to give himself and Anchorage a critical win at home.  The only goals allowed by him were two from Danny Marston and one from Ruslan Zaporozhets, both of which are top line forwards. The secondary scoring from the bottom 9 and defense were non-existent, but not for lack of trying.  Sasha Dangelchek personally had seven shots, but Venables robbed him each and every time.  Venables came up large in the third period stopping three straight shots in the span of eight seconds and then corralling the rebound to end the threat.  In the shootout, once again Venables was stellar when it mattered.  After Daniel Bischoff scored to make it 2-1 in the shootout in the second round, it was up to the goalie to slam the door shut.  James Ronlain attempted to go five hole, but Venables squeezed the pads in time and gave the Armada a well-deserved shootout win.

Save of the game

Shootouts have been on the discussion table lately about if it belongs to the game or not. Some say it is boring or too random compared to the overtime period. As long as I see this type of stuff in shootouts I'm all for it! Anchorage goalie Ian Venables crushes St. Louis' hopes and dreams when he commits this ultimate robbery against shooter James Ronlain. It seems like Ronlain just kinda freezes when he sees Venables aggressive but calculated move towards the puck while stacking pads. You always hear that goalies should be the ones who waits for the moves and then reacts. But Venables has another thoughts as he puts the passive mindset in the garbage bin and throws a curveball towards unexpecting shooter, this time it worked brilliantly and secured the victory for Anchorage.

Week 5, Game 2! ACE’S CRANKIN HITS! We’re here in Anchorage Alaska where the St. Louis Scarecrows have bundled their asses up in parkas because they’re not in Missouri anymore! This tilt also went the distance, going all the way to overtime and the shootout. Daniel Bischoff sent the hometown fans, all thirteen of them, home happy when he beat Jason Voorhees in the shootout. I don’t think Voorhees is a guy I’d want to piss off though, he gets a little cutty.
ANYWAYS…. WE’RE HERE FOR THE HITS!
Luc-Pierre Lespineau-Leb had six registered hits in this game. SIX! Here’s just one of those bits of body contact.

That guy is dead now. That’s Ulrik Bergstrom. His funeral is scheduled for Wednesday.

Game 107 Comment #1 (127 words)

Shots on goal doesn’t always equate to a win. The Scarecrows were able to put up a whopping 45 shots on goal (42 in regulation and overtime) during this game. They were firing on all cylinders, but still had trouble getting the puck in the back of the net. In the first period, they scored 1 goal in 10 shots. The second period they scored 1 goal on 15 shots, and 1 goal on 19 shots in the third. Venables was playing a great game stopping them left and right. Unfortunately the overall shot percentage came up short for the scarecrows. They weren’t able to score in the OT period, and Venables was able to stop 2 of the 3 attempts by the scarecrows in the shootout.
