PGS S52 Game 126: Vancouver Whalers vs Kelowna Knights
#1

Vancouver Whalers 3, Kelowna Knights 7

Tonight, we go to Kelowna for a showdown between two British Columbia rivals: the Vancouver Whalers and the Kelowna Knights.  This is the third meeting between these clubs and Kelowna is looking for their first win over the visiting squad this season.  Backup goaltender Cillian Kavanagh is getting the nod tonight for the Knights looking for his 5th win of the season while the Whalers sent out their star goalie White Goodman who has been one of the best goalies this season.

First Period
Shots
Whalers :5
Knights :8

Penalties
Danila Zhernov Knights Interference at 0:59
William Hartmann Whalers Hooking at 0:59
Adam Scianna Knights Holding at 5:45
Austin Powers Whalers Holding the Stick at 12:56
Gylfi Eriksson Knights High sticking at 16:16

Both teams started by struggling to get the puck into the other team’s zone and there was a lot of sloppy hockey early.  Knights D Danila Zhernov and Whalers RW William Hartmann took matching minors, but neither team could even register a shot.  Finally, the Knights broke through with 10:22 remaining in the first when Whalers D Mikas Bieksa blocked a shot by LW Gylfi Eriksson right to C Ryan Shepard.  Goodman, having already reacted to Eriksson's attempt, could not recover as Shepard buried it right down the middle of the wide open net to make it 1-0.  Just a short time later, the Knights defense made a nice play on offense as Michael Preeb went D to D for Alex Ranch who spotted RW Nicklaus Engel down low for his 7th of the season to make it 2-0.  The Whalers appeared to be on their heels a bit and immediately went down a man as C Austin Powers grabbed LW Jaska Seppala’s stick off a bad turnover in the neutral zone.  Goodman, however, made a couple of spectacular saves on Shepard and D Danila Zhernov and the momentum was right back in the Whalers favor.  Later on, the Knights would kill a minor penalty, but could not clear the zone and Whalers LW The singray that Killed steve irwin took a slapshot that Kavanagh couldn’t handle.  D Tiberius Maximus got a couple of whacks in with RW Antti Antinen flailing about trying to stop the puck, but was unable to keep the puck from crossing the line with 1:30 to go to cut the Knights lead to 2-1.  Zhernov picked off the pass from Maximus and immediately sent in D Noah Nystrom in on a 2 on 1 with LW Kalevolaripaavo Kaspertommevinapuu.  Nystrom completed his pass over to Kaspertommevinapuu who was able to slide it in just under Goodman’s pass to make the score 3-1 Knights with 45 seconds remaining.  Finally, the buzzer sounded and the Knights crowd cheered a strong opening period from the home team.

Second Period
Shots
Whalers :8
Knights :10

Penalties
Morgan Forestier Knights Interference at 8:55
Sven Yxskaft Whalers Roughing (Double Minor) at 13:53

Kavanagh had to be stellar early this period as the Whalers looked to respond right out of the gate.  Just under three minutes into the second, Vancouver LW Francois Breton passed over to C Stracimir Petrovic in the slot who took the shot.  Kavanagh made a kick save and the puck was sent into the corner.  Breton scooped up the puck and immediately fired it into the side of the net, but was able to get his own rebound.  Kavanagh reached out with the glove and stopped the following shot to end the threat.  One minute later, the Knights were able to respond after a rush up the ice the team settled in.  Theo Golury took a shot and missed the net, but the lively boards in Kelowna allowed Rocco Berni to get the rebound and send it home to make it 4-1 Knights.  After a poor showing, Goodman’s night was done having made only 5 saves on 9 shots.  Rookie goalie Joe Simpson would take his place and play the remainder of the evening.  The Whalers would soon get another chance on the powerplay as Morgan Forestier was sent off with 11:05 remaining in the second.  Petrovic won the ensuing faceoff and Bieksa sent a wrist shot right by Kavanagh’s ear to give Vancouver some life.  But, with just a little more than six minutes to go, D Sven Txskaft took an undisciplined penalty and the referee gave him a double minor penalty for roughing.  This ultimately doomed the Whalers chances at a comeback and Kaspertommevisnapuu and Zhernov would both score on the Knights powerplay to make it 6-2.

Third Period
Shots
Whalers :5
Knights :11

Penalties
Zlatan Ibrahimovic Jr. Whalers Hooking at 0:05
William Hartmann Whalers Hooking at 5:18
Sven Yxskaft Whalers Hooking at 11:49
Tiberius Maximus Whalers Interference at 19:23

With the game in hand, it began to get chippy and Vancouver began a parade to the penalty box.  The team looked lost out there, but was able to regain a bit of momentum when Bieksa intercepted a pass by Kaspertommevinapuu and moved the puck forward to Breton.  Breton deked out his man and scored shorthanded to put the Whalers within three.  But, the team couldn’t put it together and failed to put any kind of pressure on the Knights all period.  With 5:38 to go in the game, Morgan Forestier notched his 4th of the season to end any kind of threat.  Seppala recorded his first career assist on the play.  Mercifully, this game came to an end with the final score 7-3 in favor of the Kelowna Knights.

Despite taking so many penalties, the Whalers only allowed 2 goals on them (both on Txskaft’s double minor) and even scored a shorthanded goal in the third period.  On the other hand, most of the penalties they did take and kill successfully were when the game was virtually decided and further prevented them from any semblance of a comeback.  Kavanagh had a strong showing in net allowing 3 goals on 18 shots for his 5th win of the season, but Kaspertommevisnapuu took home the honors with his 2 goal night.

Everybody has bad days

Vancouver Whalers goalie White Goodman is no doubt one of the better goalies in SMJHL, if not the best. However this wasn't what we have used to see from him. He didn't saw much action which can be hard for a goalie to get in to the game, that might be a reason for this lackluster performance. Goodman got only 5 saves from 9 shots he faced before he got swapped and you could see his disappointment on his face when he sat on the bench. I don't envy the next opponent Goodman is going to play against because you can be sure that he will bounce back and shut the door and silence any doubters. Watch out!

Rookie of the game

Rocco Berni played once again very mature and exciting hockey! The third star of the game showed us great game sense in both ends of the ice. Fast on his feet and decision making awarded him with amazing goal in the second period which put the final nail in Vancouver's coffin. Berni celebrated his goal as you should, but the Vancouver's players didn't appreciate this "referee style" celly too much calling it "cocky" and "disrespectful" as Kelowna ran with it in 4-1 lead.  I'd say let the rookie enjoy his goals. What do you think about the celly Berni showed us? Let the boys be boys or was this too arrogant?

Save of the game

Holy moly what we have witnessed here tonight! Kelowna Knights goalie Cillian Kavanagh summons his inner superpowers as he does the best Hasek impersonation to date. Early in the first period, when the game still was wide open, the Vancouver Whalers forward Austin Powers has a open net but Kavanagh denies this sure goal with his stick!! Commentators went crazy, players were in disbelief and the home crowd went absolutely nuts when Kavanagh kept the game tied 0-0 with this unbelievable save. After the game, when asked, Kavanagh described the save to be one of the best saves he have ever done. Absolute madness! Congrats to Austin Powers too, you will be in the highlight reels for weeks with this one.

Huge Night from Zhernov
The Kelowna Knights have to be happy with this game from their young defenseman. Danila Zhernov's utilized his quick shot and exceptional vision of the ice to record four points on the night, with one goal and three assists. Two of his assists showcased his willingness to push play out of his own zone as he found his teammates down the ice on beautiful outlet passes that led to goals on odd-man rushes. Late in the second period he showed that he is deserving of more powerplay minutes with two powerplay points within 15 seconds! The first was a slick pass to Kalevolaripaavo Kaspertommevisnapuu, who one-timed it past Joe Simpson, the Vancouver netminder. The second was an absolute cannon from the point that no one even saw go in until the horn blew 20 seconds later. The puck went through the net! Danila Zhernov has a bright future for sure.

Comment 1) Kelowna dominates almost every facet of game to secure easy victory

A furious blitz by the Kelowna Knights in the first two periods was enough to secure the game. Kelowna managed an almost ludicrous shooting % in the first 2 periods, having converted 6 goals in only 18 shots, good for a 33% rate. The combination of skill and a Vancouver blue line that seemed almost asleep at times allowed Kelowna to continuously get dangerous shots from the slot that they were not missing. Vancouver starting goaltender Goodman allowed 4 goals on only 9 shots and was pulled early in the game, The backup was better, bu the game had gotten too far out of hand too quickly for Vancouver to muster up any kind of fight.

This was a blowout game by the Kelowna Knights. They put up a total of 7 goals on 29 shots. Vancouver put out both of its goalies. Goodman Played 24 minutes, and Simpson played 36 Minutes. Goodmen ended the game giving up 4 goals on 9 shots, a lackluster performance and a .556 Save Percentage. Simpson played a little bit longer, giving up 3 goals on 20 shots for a .850 save percentage. All goals scored against goodman were at even strength and were scored by 5 different players. 2 of the 3 goals scored on Simpson came when Kelowna was on the power play. Even If Simpson was able to hold off all of those goals, Goodman let too many in for the Whalers to mount a resistance.

1. Well folks, another goal differential padding game here for the Kelowna Knights. This season has proven to be an odd one statistically for the Knights, as they finished the season with one of the best goal differentials in the entire SMJHL, but were only able to secure a 7 seed going into playoffs (upset season). Anyways, in this game, Kelowna was scoring early and often, and really shut the Whalers down defensively. They were able to chase the Whalers' goaltender out of the net after scoring 4 goals on 9 shots, and they never really looked back from there. Not the first time Kelowna has ended a goalie's night, and definitely won't be the last time.

2. An issue that Vancouver face in this game was their lack of discipline, with the team racking up 16 penalty minutes throughout the game. The first period saw the Whalers take a couple of penalties for hooking and holding the stick, but Kelowna was able to pot three markers in this frame, so that probably made things worse going forward. Int he second period, they received a double minor for roughing, on which the Knights were able to slot home two very quick goals, with one coming just six seconds after the penalty being assessed. The final frame saw them take four more minor penalties, but the game was already finished at that point. Keep your heads, Vancouver!

3. Danila Zhernov had an enormous impact on this game, collecting three assists and a goal for a total of four points. He was able to do this because he played the second most minutes on the team for the night, and his defence partner, Luciano Vessot, was more than happy to take the defensive stats to himself for the night, allowing Zhernov to roam free as an offensive blueliner. Zhernov picked up two assists in the first period, on goals by Ryan Shepard and Kalevolaripaavo Kaspertommevisnapuu. In the second period, he grabbed an another assist on Kalevolaripaavo Kaspertommevisnapuu's second goal, before putting a shot of his own past the poor Whalers' goalie to cap off his outstanding night.
