With Season 52 wrapping up, I wanted to take a look at the comparison between the SHL’s builds from when the “optimal” strategy was initially leaked at the end of pre-season 51 to the end of season 52. Or at least that’s when I became aware. It was probably a bit earlier. Last season’s playoffs saw Hamilton brush off any and all competition with relative ease, only dropping 2 games the entire playoffs while waltzing their way to a cup. So let’s start by taking a look at how each S52 playoff team fared against the reigning cup champions this season.

For this, I didn’t use a points % and used a win % instead to more accurately assess how a playoff series would have gone so far for each team. The Western Conference teams obviously have played Hamilton less and thus have a smaller sample size. Every Eastern team played Hamilton at least 4 times. I’ve also included GF, GA, SHF, SHA, as well as all the face-off percentages. The teams who fared the best were San Francisco and New Orleans. Again, a small sample size of only 2 games. Both of these teams interestingly were outshot overall. In fact, Hamilton seems to outshoot everyone except for two playoff teams. Those being Chicago and Los Angeles. Los Angeles is an interesting case as they actually outshot Hamilton by 20 overall but got killed in goal difference only putting up 5 but giving up 12. Chicago only managed to win 2 of their 6 games while also outshooting Hamilton, but by much less of a margin.

Above is a breakdown of the builds by team and by skill at the end of the season 51 pre-season. Anything highlighted in red is more than 5% less than the playoff team average and anything highlighted in green is more than 5% greater than the average. We can easily see where Hamilton is under weighted. They don’t put much stock in checking, skating, strength, or passing. Their scoring wasn’t crazy high though, like most people would imagine. Instead, they really focused on the gap between passing and scoring. That looked to be their main objective. The gap at the end of the pre-season was a whopping 14. The next closest, in terms of scoring being the higher of the two, was Toronto at 7.78. Now, let’s take a look at current season builds.

Again, we can clearly see that Hamilton is underweighted, compared to the playoff team average, in checking, strength, and skating. The gap between their scoring and passing has decreased to 10.94 most likely due to the max gap between an individual skater’s scoring and passing attribute being limited. This was implemented to alleviate some of this discrepancy across the league and it seems to have worked a bit. Chicago has the next highest gap in between scoring and passing sitting at 9.33 which isn’t too far off. Chicago also has the highest scoring in the league by 3 points. However, we can now see that Hamilton has by far the highest defense in the league. It’s over 3 points higher than the next closest teams in Buffalo and New Orleans. Toronto is interesting as they were able to make the playoffs while not really being a skillful team on paper. Let’s move on to a chart that quantifies the actual changes made for each team for this time period.

This table looks at the time period change for each team in each skill. You can see that endurance, strength, and passing were the biggest risers for Hamilton. Passing obviously went up due to the new rule implemented. As for strength and endurance, it’s a curious move. I assume they simmed the shit out of everything because they’re nerds so I also assume it’s the optimal move. As for why? I have no clue in the slightest. On the whole, all skills seemed to go up in the league except for passing and fighting.
With all this being said, I have no clue how these playoffs will shake out. If I had to assume, I’d guess that 1) based on regular season performance, New Orleans and San Fran might pose a threat in the championship 2) based on skill sets, Chicago and Buffalo from the Eastern conference would match up well with Hamilton 3) how the fuck did Toronto make the playoffs. Seeing as this is the end of the SimonT era, this is all useless and I’ve wasted my life. On the flip side, hopefully this helps a few people determine their playoff brackets.

I mean my endurance jump likely skews the endurance stat a bit more than other since it took a huge jump after I got 90 PH because it took 16 to up SC by one at that point.

If we would copy them our Score first players would have a 20 gap and our Pass first players only a gap to scoring of 1.
