Introducing PBJ Souppan – The perfect blend
Written by Michael Magic
PBJ Souppan comes into the SMJHL Draft as a great defensive talent with a nose for offense. However, before he was sniffing for big hits and big goals, he was a brother to many others. Born to Carl and Mariah Souppan as the third child in an eventual five, PBJ would be quick to learn that the Souppan live was not an easy one. Father Carl had immigrated to Canada from Haiti after a massive earthquake destroyed their country. Mother Maria had also immigrated to Canada, albeit from Barbados. The two met while working in a kitchen together, and quickly found that although they were an odd combination amongst friends, they worked quite well together.

As the middle child growing up, PBJ was terrorized by his older sisters, Anastasiia, and Natalia, as well as his younger brothers Marcus, and Jensen. However, if you asked Souppan, he would say that he was the one terrorizing them. Growing up in a family like that helped him develop his trademark tough skin, and he has grown into a player that is known for handling criticism quite well.

Speaking of playing, PBJ would eventually learn a love for the game of hockey through playing in the GLL (Great Lakes League), a casual winter league that lasted the entire winter season of Ontario (so about 6 months). The league was affordable (something that was a must for the Souppan family and their 5 children), requiring only a pair of skates, and a hockey stick to play most positions. Contact was heavily encouraged in this league, and PBJ quickly learned how to take a hit, as well as deliver them. He would eventually be known as the Ice Breaker, because on his ability to send someone onto the ice hard enough to crack it. Games were usually concluded when someone got put through the ice, or when the skylight went out (so around 3pm).

His play would eventually get noticed by one of the very minor league coaches that played with the kids and PBJ would end up getting sponsored by the Caledonia Cows program to play in the semi-professional SOHL. Over the next four years, Souppan would refine his game, but kept to his core of big hits, and big plays.

He was an electric player for the Cows, and word of this urban legend has reached the ears of many SMJHL GM’s and coaches alike.  Now rumours are abound about just where Souppan may end up, with some placing his as the next top SHL talent, with others saying he’ll never make it out of the SMJHL.  All I can say is, you cannot love watching this kid play. He is an absolute shows-man, for better and for worse. He’ll get exposed from time to time, but he’ll also crush wingers around the same frequency. Even if he never makes it to the next level, he’s a fantastic player to watch play.
