A look back at S50 draftees

(This post was last modified: 03-08-2020, 11:17 PM by PremierBromanov.)

Ready for grading, 2709 words, 3 images, and some research.

It's been 4 seasons since each S50 draftee has entered the league, and for many of us it was the first time we had tried something like this. Since every player is now done with juniors, it's time to take a look at their SHL draft and see how we all turned out. Who won, who lost, who busted, who excelled?

Some caveats:
We're looking at players ranked by TPE, since overall this is a decent measure of what kind of player they can be. See sources below for more information.

We'll try to take into account positional needs of each team. For example, Adam Barron was drafted first overall and is currently ranked 4th in TPE, which isnt necessarily a loss for Winnipeg since the next D-man drafted was Augustus Wang, sixth overall who currently sits at 6th in TPE for the class.

This analysis is also not a dig to the losers, who sometimes need to step away from the game to make room for real life issues and priorities.

First Round

Winners
The first round can be tricky and risky. Unfortunately, there's also no room for massive surprising success in the first round, since the best you can usually do is a few positions up. Fortunately, any player who has ~700 TPE right now is considered to be doing just fine and every team that drafted those players will be psyched to have them. Those players that maintained or exceeded expectations are as follows

Ryan Shepard

A former first overall draftee in the S49 SMJHL entree draft, now drafted 5th overall by Chicago, Ryan Shepard has had a dominant career in the juniors for 4 seasons now, cracking 50 points in just his second season under the Knights. We call Ryan Shepard a winner because despite being drafted 5th overall, he sits at the number one rank for TPE in the S50 draft class. It's not a huge upset, Ryan sits just 20 to 60 TPE above those that were drafted above him and those teams that drafted players before them are likely still happy with their decisions. Only one center was drafted before him, Ivan Maximus.

Bobby Lane

Bobby Lane is perhaps one of those "boring" winners in that he was drafted 4th overall and is now ranked 3rd. The Stars are very happy with this pick as Bobby continues to grind out TPE and continues to be a great player for his junior and senior teams. Similar to Shepard, Bobby saw success right out of the gate in the juniors and will make Toronto proud for years to come.

Adam Barron
Drafted 1st overall, Barron is one of the few winners who lost rank position over time. He sits at "just" 4th overall in TPE, but this is one of those draft decisions which is more about player position than raw TPE.  Barron has been a force of nature in the juniors and is one of just 7 players currently above 800 TPE. The Jets are more than happy with this draft pick and has met all expectations.

Augustus Wang
Similar to Adam Barron, Augustus Wang is one of a handful of players above 800 TPE and one of 4 Defensemen to do so. Wang was drafted 6th overall and sits at 6th overall in TPE. He is the only player in the draft to have been "correctly" drafted for his TPE rank. Wang was instrumental to his team's Four Star Cup win.

Alexei Rykov
Drafted 12th, now 13th in overall TPE, Rykov has held is position fairly closely, earning a grand total of 772 TPE over 4 seasons. Rykov lead carolina to a Laurifer trophy in season 51, and helped secure 2 cups in S49 and S50. The Dragons will be pleased with this pickup. rykov has been terrorizing the juniors for 4 seasons, putting up 172 points in that time, 78 of them goals. Rykov will be a dominant force in the SHL in the coming seasons.

Phineas Gold
Another Carolina success story, Phineas was drafted 14ths overall, but has since moved up 2 positions with 777 TPE. Gold was skilled enough to escape the minors last season and has a head start on his SHL career, getting 13 points in 50 games.

Losers
Unfortunately, when you're at the top, sometimes the only place to go is down. Here are the biggest busts and losers in the draft.

Hariken Urawa
Drafted 9th overall the Steelhawks, Hariken has since stepped away from the game after almost capping himself in the juniors, with 422 TPE. He is currently ranked 38th in the class and is listed as inactive, for a combined loss of 29 positions. The Steelhawks have to be upset about this pick, BUT they are also big winners in the second round, as we'll see with draft Samuel Michaud, drafted 18th and now ranked 5th in TPE.

Markus Ohlsson
After winning it all, it's tough to try to make your team better with the last pick in the first round. But its even tougher when that player goes inactive. After being drafted 16th overall, Markus earned a total of 357 TPE, just barely capping out for his 2nd year of junior. The blizzard may be the biggest losers in this draft, drafting just 2 more players who combine for 959 TPE, and one of which is inactive.

Ian Venables

Another one bites the dust, this time in Goalie Ian Venables, drafted 13ths overall in an attempt to shore-up the goaltending. Ian has updated as recently as March 1st and has his FHM build in, but is listed as inactive according to the data. So that must be an error. Ian still has a chance to make an impact in the league, but his 536 TPE will see him sidelined more often than note. Not a huge loss, the pride ultimately got two players out of the first round and should feel pretty good about that. Ian is ranked 32nd in TPE.

Ricky Bobby
Ricky Bobby was a strong choice as recently as season 51, but has fallen behind in the last season due to going dark suddenly in early February. The is ultimately the risk every team faces when drafting and usually evens out across the board. Ricky was a strong left wing with good numbers in the juniors, but since stopping has dropped to rank 27 in his class after being drafted 10th. Out of this draft, the Jets have only gotten one player, but fortunately that player is Adam Barron. Sometimes quality trumps quantity.

Second Round

Winners
The second round is where the real winners start to come out. They have plenty of room to move up in the rankings and don't often miss as much. Due to the size of this class, there are more winners than not.

Samuel Michaud
As mentioned before, the Steelhawks really whiffed on 9th overall pick Urawa, but that loss is evened out by the win they got here with Samuel Michaud. Michaud is one of the biggest surprises in this league, not counting GM picks in the late round, jumping 13 ranks from 18th overall to 5th, at 827 TPE. The steelhawks have got to feel some relief with that 2nd round pick.

Aron Hernadivic
One of the other biggest surprises is left wing Aron hernadivic, drafted 21st overall but soaring to 7th in TPE at 802. The Buffalo had 4 solid picks in s50 in Augustus Wang, Aron hernadivic, Tom Fiddler (yours truly), and Rintaru Okabe, each performing at or well above expectations. So good were these picks that Buffalo was unable to handle the logjam approaching their roster and were able to trade some of these players for future picks, while keeping the real stars in the lineup.

Bjorn Leppanen
Drafted late in the second at 31st overall, Bjorn has resulted in a near 800 TPE player by the end of his junior career. The Renegades may be the real winner in this draft in terms of "shooting percentage", with almost 1600 TPE combined in their two drafts and zero misses in the entire draft. Bjorn has skyrocketed to 11th in the class, jumping 20 other players. Perhaps the biggest winner in the whole draft.

Markus Tegernako
Markus doesn't have the flashy appeal of jumping a lot of ranks, but being drafted 22nd overall and having 100+ TPE on his peers (guys like me), Markus has become an excellent pick for the Chiefs, who didn't have many top picks going into this draft, but walked out with a potential starting goalie.

Ursin Zimmermann
Similarly, Zimmermann is just a solid pick at 30th overall, jumping 8 spots to 22nd in TPE, again about 100 TPE past his peers. With Ursin, Bobby Lane, and Daniel Kuster in the first two rounds, the Stars have some solid players for their lineup, combining 2,125 TPE. The Stars also have one depth draft as well, taking Petrikov 45th (411 TPE).

Losers
What goes up, must come down. Players have exceeded expectations, but some have been less than palatable. Fortunately for this class, the 2nd round has been mostly home runs or par-for-the-course picks, if youll allow me to mix sports here.

Kalevolaripaavo Kaspertommevisnapuu
I refuse to type this name out again, so I will call him Kasper. Kasper was an early second at 17th overall but has since fallen to 30th in TPE, due do his sudden departure late in 2019. Kasper initially gathered quite a bit of TPE and looked to be a real winner, getting 560 before his 3rd season, but ultimately he has not updated since December. This is ultimately not a huge loss, as the Panthers drafted Vorian Atreides and Disisde Dayudie  back to back in the first round, both of whom are performing more than adequately with nearly 1,600 TPE between them. More than good enough to consider this draft a success.

Zbigniew Pokrywka
Another tale of woe for inactivity, Zbigniew has two separate month long gaps in his update history and has only managed to gather 365 TPE, but has updated as recently as February 29th. There is no current FHM build yet on his update page and there are questions if he will continue to update his player. The Spectres have to be a little disappointed in this draft, with Zbigniew being their only pick in the first two rounds. But as we'll discover later, its not all bad as they've walked away with two good players in Jakob Hamr and Thomas Vanice, drafted in the 4th round.

Third Round and Later

Winners
No real losers in the third round as this is where the picks start to peter out, with further rounds being mostly inactives. but there are a few big winners.

Daniel Bischoff
If you've been keeping tabs on the junior league, you know the name Daniel Bischoff. He's one of the leagues top centers two years running and absolutely amazes with his point totals, with 55 points in season 52 and a whopping 61 points in season 51. Daniel was drafted early in the third round by the Dragons, who may have ran away with this draft with Rykov, Weston, and Bischoff, 2,191 TPE combined. Bischoff now ranks 17th overall with 728 TPE.

Michael Fitted
Drafted 39th overall, the Barracuda's gamble has paid off in local legend Michael Fitted. Fitted now is ranked 24th overall with 642 TPE, tied with his two-time teammate Tom Fiddler (Kraken and Cuda). After drafting James Ronlain in the 2nd and picking up another nigh 700 TPE player in Michael Fitted, the cuda have turned what could've been an empty draft into two solid core players (and traded later for a third player, yours truly). Not only does Fitted bring a solid player who is only just getting started in terms of earning TPE, who will soon pass Tom Fiddler and maybe even James Ronlain), Fitted can be a great boon to the locker room as he knows FHM very well and always offers good advice. So perhaps this is the home run the cuda were looking for.

First-Name Last-Name
After Edmonton's disappointing draft, it's good to find some success somewhere. First-Name Last-Name isn't a star player, but being drafted 43rd overall, he's managed to keep up with it and earn 500 TPE to put him at 33rd overall and could be a serviceable depth piece for Edmonton. Still, it is upsetting that the Blizzard's best player only has 500 TPE and was drafted late in the 3rd.

Thomas Vanice
Probably the biggest jump in quality in terms of draft pick, the Spectres have turned an early 4th round pick into a quality left win, Thomas Vanice was drafted 51st and now sits at 25th overall in TPE with 638. It's a pretty rare thing to get good players this late in the draft so the Spectres have got to be happy with Vanice.

Akira Ren
While it doesn't really count since Akira is the GM of the syndicate, he was technically drafted 69th overall (nice) and now sits at 2nd overall in TPE. The syndicate are probably pretty happy to have spent a measly 5th round draft pick to get one of the best players in the class at 845 TPE.

Team Winners

Texas Renegades
The Renegade walked into this draft with a 2nd and a 31st, with nothing else until the 5th round, but have walked out with the 9th and 11th overall TPE players. Ivan Maximus might have fallen a few ranks, but he still stands at 794 TPE, more than enough to be a star on the team. The Renegade have also turned the 31st overall into a quality D-man in Bjorn Leppanen , who sits at 782 TPE.

San Francisco Pride
Despite missing out with Ian Venables, the Pride have similarly walked away with two quality players in this draft, Osterman (799 TPE) and Veccelli (756 TPE), more than good enough to call them winners.

Calgary Dragons
Perhaps the biggest winners this year, the dragons hit on both of their first round picks Rykov and Weston, but also got a home run in Daniel Bischoff in the third round. Those three players could be the future first line of this team if the players continue their success, and it only took them one draft to assemble it.

Buffalo Stampede
Another contender for bigger winner, the Stampede had 4 picks in the first two rounds and hit on all of them, whiffing only on their 35th and 59th picks, which isn't a big deal. The Stampede picked up Augustus Wang (823 TPE), Aron Hernavodic (802 TPE), Tom Fiddler (655 TPE), and Rintaru Okabe (587), the stampede have managed to pick two stars and two depth pieces, being so successful in this effort that they had to trade away some of them to maintain their cap space.

Manhattan Rage
They only had one pick in this draft and it was Phineas Gold, who is a handsome man.

Chicago Syndicate
Technically cheating, the Syndicate drafted Ryan Shepard 5th overall, the classes top earner, followed by drafting their GM with a throwaway pick, Akira Ren, the classes second best earner. The Syndicate turned this draft into a real one-two punch.

Team Losers

Edmonton Blizzard
After missing out with their first round pick with marcus Ohlsson (357 TPE), the blizzard followed it up with Kevin Robinson (460 TPE),  and First-Name Last-Name (499 TPE). While other teams won big with 2 or more 700+ TPE players, the Blizzard walked away with none, and only 1 active player.

New Orleans Spectres
While the Spectres can be considered to have picked a winner in Thomas Vanice in the 4th round, its not quite enough to make this draft a success. NOLA drafted Ian Venebles (515 TPE) in the first, Zbigniew Pokrywka (365 TPE) in the second, Jakob Hamr (519 TPE) in the third round, and Vanice (638 TPE) in the 4th. The Spectres really need some stars in this draft to stay competitive, but ended up with one solid player and 3 inactives.

New England Wolfpack
The Wolfpack had no 1st or 2nd round picks, but 3 3rds. Those picks turned into one player in Sasha Dangelchek (467 TPE) and two inactives (Marcus Weiser and Georgy Gorbachenko
