Newfoundland Berzerkers Preseason Wrap Up: The Great, the Good, The Ugly
Written by: Michael Magic
It’s been an excellent preseason for the Newfoundland Berzerkers, who finished 5-2, and will be going into the season hot. It seems like the draft has paid off very well for them, and their prospects look to be poised to take the league by storm. Let’s take a look at some of the highlights, and lowlights, of the preseason.

Andrei (Clean) Kostitsyn (RW): A-
Andrei Kostitsyn is a monster on the ice, offensively and defensively. He averaged a point per game, grabbing 7 helpers in 7 games. However, its his 30 hits that really stand out. Yeah, you heard me right, 30 hits.  He also has 11 shots on goal, and 5 shots blocked. However, there is some concern with him from a defensive value standpoint. While he is a bruiser, he is also out of position quite often (-3 +/-). He has also often forced the pass, which has worked so far, but has also resulted in a fair number of giveaways (8)

Cale Amundsen (G): A
The rookie goalkeeper of the Berzerkers was in net for the entirety of the preseason and looks to be the main workhorse going into the season. In 7 games he averaged 35 saves a game (246 saves in total), and held a save percentage of 0.911. He has been an absolute rock for the Berzerkers. However, his 3.43 GAA could use a little work. Ideally, the Berzerker defense will begin to take shape around them and give Amundsen a bit of a break.

Gavin Wallace ©: B-
Wallace has been average throughout the offseason. Averaging 11 minutes a game, he has put up 4 points (1 goal, 3 assists), and had 12 shots on goal. Defensively, he’s had 1 hit and 1 takeaway, but has had 2 giveaways. Most impressive is his willingness to put his body on the line, earning him 6 shots blocked while on the ice.

Guy LeGrande ©: C+
A late addition to the Berzerkers, LeGrande has been shown to be a serviceable player for them. He has had 1 assist, 5 shots on goal, and 2 shots blocked, while only giving away the puck once. We should be seeing more from Guy soon, as he is averaging about 19 minutes of ice time per game

Jack Klompus (D): B+
Jack Klompus has played well through 7 games with the Berzerkers. Averaging a point per game, with 2 clappers, and 5 helpers on the board through 7, means that Klompus is on par for a decent season. He is also generating about 2.25 shots on net per game, with 7 hits and 7 blocked shots in total. More impressively, he’s managed to avoid turnovers, only collecting 2. However, he has yet to register any takeaways, which is a cause for concern given his 20 minutes of ice time per game. He’ll need to step up a bit more defensively as the season kicks into gear.

Jukka Timonen (D): A-
Timonen has been a defensive leader for the Berzerkers so far. Leading all players in ice time, averaging about 25 minutes per game, Timonen also leads all defenders in points with 9 (5 goals, 4 assists). He is also a shooting machine, generating 4 shots on goal per game. However, his most impressive asset so farm has to be his ability to read the offense, generate hits (9), takeaways (8), and block shots (2.85 per game, 20 total). But the savvy defender has show signs of inexperience, too often forcing the play resulting in a team high 9 giveaways.

Lucifer Morningstar ©: B-
Lucifer Morningstar has been a stud at center for the Newfoundland squad. Averaging just 17 minutes per game, Morningstar has been a regular contributor this offseason, chipping in 9 point (4 goals, 5 assists). Morningstar’s efforts have been particularly noticed on the powerplay unit, where he has found 3 of his 9 points. Defensively, he has some work to do. 3 hits and 2 takeaways in 7 games isn’t quite at the level the Berzerkers need, though his 6 blocked shots go a long way to mitigate that.

Matthew Forrester ©: C+
Much like Guy LeGrande, Forrester was a late addition to the Berzerkers training camp, and only played in the last two games of the preseason. He has had 1 assist, 4 shots on goal, 1 hit, 1 takeaway, 2 blocked shots, and averaged about 15 minutes of ice time through both of his games.

Matthias Birdstrom (LW): C
The contribution from Matthias Birdstrom through 7 games of preseason hockey has been rather poor. While he was averaging about 13 minutes per game, Birdstrom didn’t really do anything with those minutes. 3 points (1 goal (PP), and 2 assists), with 4 shots on goal in 7 games is not a flattering score line. Defensively, he did have 4 hits, and 2 blocked shots, but registered no takeways either. Simply put, not good enough for the 3rd liner. He’ll have to work hard to get back his coaches trust early this season.

Niccolo Livius (LW): C+
On the other hand Noccolo Livius is another low ice time (9 minutes per game) winger who is making the most of his time. He has the same amount of points as Birdstrom (3) with 2 goals and 1 helper. However, he has 9 shots on net averaging 1.25 shots per game. Defense does leave a bit to be desired though, with  only 3 hits, and 1 shot blocked, as well as 2 giveaways. It’s a great start for Niccolo, and I’m sure we’ll see him improve as the season goes on.

Patric Twist (RW): C
Twist is a bottom 6 winger who did no do so well this preseason. Averaging 10:30 minutes per game, Twist has only 1 assist through 7 games. He does have 8 shots on net though, and his defensive efforts have been commendable (6 hits, 3 takeaways, and 2 shots blocked). However, it just hasn’t been good enough for the winger. Coaches will likely be expecting more as the season turns on.

PBJ Souppan (D): C+
PBJ was the first pick of the Berzerker’s draft, and it’s fair to say he is having a bit of a hard time adjusting to the level pro play found in the SMJHL. Through 7 games, the dynamic defender has a total of 5 points (2 clappers and 3 helpers). He does have a massive 20 shots on net, teeing them up at least 2.85 times per game. Defensively, he has been solid with 8 hits, 6 takeaways, and 5 blocked shots. However, his 14 penalty minutes has hurt his team, and he has to get more control over his emotions if he hopes to maintain the high level of play that is expected of him.

Red Arrow (RW): B+
Now here is a player that has impressed during the preseason! With 11:30 minutes of ice time per game, Red Arrow has managed to tee up a point per game (2 goals, 5 assists (1PPA)), and have 9 shots on net. Defensively, he has managed to be physical (5 hits), but does need to work on his game sense as he had 3 giveaways.

Renji Atake (D): C+
The third late preseason add-on, Renji Atake has been a decent player through two games. Managing to pick up his first goal, as well as his first assist of the preseason  during his 30 minutes on the ice (15 minutes per game), Atake has impressed with his offensive capabilities. However, defensively there has ben cause for concern. With only 2 hits, a 3 giveaways, Renji will need to quickly adapt to what is no doubt a complicated defensive system if he wants to earn more minutes.

Ryuuji Minamino (RW): B-
Minamino has been a very dynamic member of the team, on and off the ice, and a fantastic member of the Berzerkers squad. With 5 points (4 goals and 1 assist) in 8 games, his point production has been less than average. However, it isn’t for a lack of effort as he tees up about 2.42 shots on net per game. On defense, Minamino has been a solid contributor, putting up 12 hits, 8 shots blocked, and 2 takeaways. In actuality, Minamino’s only downside is that he tries too hard. He’s been caught out on the ice during bad situations more often than not, and is a -5 +/-, despite having 5 points to round it out.

SLATT Potts (RW): B+
SLATT Potts is probably one of the best two way forwards in the SMJHL right now, and his play this preseason proved it. His 5 points (3 goals, 2 assists), came at some of the best times, and he always seems to be around good plays (7 +/-). With an average of 3 shots on net per game, Potts has done his share offensively. However, it his defense that needs to be praise. 6 hits and 6 shots blocked are nothing to sneeze at, but his team leading 8 takeaways is what really puts Potts on another level this preseason.

Steve Harrington (LW): B+
Harrington falls into the same role as Potts did in the sense that the two have a knack for being on the ice for goals. Harrington leads the Berzerkers this preseason with a +/- of 10, but only has 4 points (2 goals, 2 assists). He also has an impressive 22 shots on net. Yet like Potts, Harrington is better known for his defensive efforts, racking up 6 hits, 8 shots blocked, and 5 takeaways. He leads all forwards with an average ice time of 21 minutes per game.

Tinke Jutila (D): B+
Jutila has been a keystone defender for the Berzerkers this preseason. While his offense contributions of 2 points over 7 games (with 7 shots on goal) seems a tad low, it is his defensive contribution the team is looking for. As a part of the to defensive pair, Jutila is on the ice for an average of 23:40 minutes per game. He has collected 11 hits, 15 shots blocked during that time, and perhaps most importantly, has only 1 giveaway. However, his 2 takeaways speak to his passive style of play. Newfoundland coaches will likely try to encourage Jutila to take more chances in hopes of increasing that number.

Vince Chalut (D): A-
Last but not least, we have Vince Chalut. The third line defender has made the most out of his 15 minutes a game, playing distributor with the puck at alarming accuracy (5 assists to 1 giveaway). He does contribute with the odd shot or two a game (10 shots on net over 7 games), but defense is where he builds his throne. 5 hits, an astounding 11 shots blocked, and 6 takeaways makes him a surprisingly useful shutdown defender given his place in the lineup. If anyone has earned his coach’s attention, it would be Chalut
