Knights Kelowna Knights @ Detroit Falcons Falcons

In this game we'll be watching the Detroit Falcons and Kelowna Knights battle it out for the second time this Season - After coming away from the first game with a big victory, Detroit will be looking to follow it up with another big win against a solid team tonight. We have Kavanagh in the net for the Knights, and Jobin in the net for the Falcons, both coming into this game hot.

Period 1
The first period of the game saw not a lot of action, with an early powerplay for the Falcons successfully nullified by the Kelowna PK team. The shots went back and forth until McMaster put one in the back of the net off an assist from Wanesly at the 13 minute mark. This goal was followed up by another off the stick of Wanesly at the 18 minute mark, assisted by Kanoff and NCheese. At the end of the first, we go into the break at 0-2.

Period 2
Unlike the first period in the second, the action started nearly immediately and didn't stop until the break. With goals at 2 minutes (NCheese, assisted by Kanoff and Liljestrom), 4 minutes (Williams no assist), 9 minutes (Womack, assisted by O'Shae and Lhotsky) and right near the whistle at 19:35 (Lhotsky, assisted by Lhotsky); Detroit put themselves firmly in the lead compared to a lone goal by Kelowna in the third minute (Barbashev II, assisted by Erikkson). At the end of the second Detroit have a commanding lead at 1-6. We see Kavanagh come out of the game in this period to give Ennis a heat check in the net to hopefully give a chance for a comeback.

Period 3
We finish out the game in the third with a quiet period - the lone goal slipping by Ennis in the 15th minute (O'Shea, assisted by Sutherland and Wartooth) to secure the second game of these teams matching up for the Falcons.

The end result of this game is also represented in our final statlines, with Detroit firing 37 shots at Kavanagh, with 6 getting by him (10 shots at Ennis, 1 scored), and Kelowna only managing to be on target towards Jobin 18 times, sneaking one through. We only saw the PK team on one occasion in this game on a minor hooking penalty, showing the outstanding discipline these teams posess - and this was killed off by Kelowna without any trouble. This game showed the first game between these two teams was not a fluke, and Kelowna have some serious ground to make up if they want to compete with the Falcons over the rest of the season.

The Detroit Falcons Prove Why They Are the Best Team in the SMJHL
The falcons absolutely dominated the second best team in the western conference in this game and continued their undefeated streak to start the season. The Detroit Falcons had more than double the shots in comparison to the Kelowna Knights, stayed out of the box for the entire night and had what seems like an unlimited amount of scoring chances in their seven to one victory. With this win the Falcons proved to the league that they can score at will against any team, as well as, play smothering shutdown defense. I know it is still early but the Falcons look like they have the potential to be one of the most dominant SMJHL teams in history.

Guy O’Shea Has Been Tearing Up The League
Any forward that can rack up a three point night would be seen as having widely impressive game getting the attention of the opposition and SHL scouts. Now what if I tell you it was defenseman Guy O’Shea who lead the charge offensively in the Falcons win. He put up an impressive goal and two assist, was a plus player, had over twenty minutes of ice time and was solid in his own zone on his way to being the first star of the game. This was not just one fluke performance by O’Shea, he is tied for first in the SMJHL for points by a defenseman, has the second best plus minus in the entire league and has put up a respectable amount of takeaways and blocked shots. Overall, Guy’s play is making him a case to be considered the top all round defenseman in the juniors.

Should The Kelowna Knights Be Worried After This Embarrassing Blowout?

At the end of the day a 2-1 win or a 7-1 win still only means you lost two points in the standings so the lopsided goal differential should not be a concern to Kelowna unless it becomes a frequent trend. Based on a larger body of work they should still be seen as a decent team in the west having come into this game with a respectable 6-4-1 and only look to improve from this game onwards. The Knights should not panic but rather take it as a wakeup call that they cannot take any nights off in this league.

The Faceoff Circle

In a game where the Falcons were superior in almost every way, the Knights take what little consolation they can find in the fact that they at least came out on top in the faceoff department. 30 wins out of 56 occasions (53.6%) isn't much, but it's still a sliver of positivity for the Knights out of that huge loss.

Faceoff Hero
Reid Sutherland  Falcons
Sutherland's name doesn't appear much on the scoresheet, but that doesn't mean he didn't contribute to his team's win. Whenever he stepped into the faceoff circle, his teammate were already planning their next move. He won 10 times and only lost four, a 71.4% success rate.

Faceoff Zero
Edward Williams Falcons
If Detroit's second centerman had a great showing in the circle, his first-line colleague had a terrible night. Williams had by far the most faceoff attempts (23) AND the most failures (17). His great play with and without the puck certainly softens the blow, but having their top center win only 26.i% of his faceoffs certainly isn't something the Falcons' coaches wish to see often.

Rotti's Round-up

High Flying Falcons
This is yet another example of Detroit's dominating performances so far this season. Starting off unbeaten through the entire first part of the season, The Falcons are flying so high above every other team it honestly looks like a race for second in the SMJHL western conference. Normally when a team is winning as much as the Falcons they have a dominant offense, or a dominant defense. Detroit has both. It's going to take an unstoppable force to beat this immovable offense, who's going to step up to the task? We'll have to wait and see, folks.

Kelowna's Rollercoaster
Being a player on Kelowna's roster, it's difficult for me to look at this game without a bias. This game was an absolute drudging, and although it'll just go down as another loss on the stat sheet, this kind of loss hits different. Kelowna has strong locker room presences galore, but will they be able to rally the troops after losing by a 6 goal margin? It's bad enough that they let 7 pucks hit the back of the net, but just scoring one goal in what was clearly a dominant offensive showing by Detroit might be the worst part of the loss.

Kanoff's Meteoric Rise
Detroit's stalwart defenseman Jack Kanoff has taken the league by storm this season. Although he peppers the net and doesn't have many goals to show for it, his ability to work the puck into a rebound-able position is largely unmatched by the rest of the blue line slappers in the rest of the league. Kanoff's rights are owned by Toronto in the big leagues, could his early domination of the blue line mean an early call-up? It could be a reach to do so early on in his career, but for a struggling team what could be better than a talented fresh face in the locker room. Kanoff is one of my players to watch for the rest of the season.

Dominance
If Knights were title contenders, then not after this game. Falcons started quickly and we all knew that game was ended, before it even started. Falcons scored seven goals, while Knights got only one puck in the net of Falcons. There were no chances to Knights. Such a disaster for Knights and 7:1 blowout. Multiple points in this game for multiple players. That was just ego glow up game for Falcons players and the entire team. Winning with this result just show how much power this team haves. They are in different level right now and all teams need to understand that.

Already champions?
Few players already gave Falcons a title ''champions of S53'' after this game and this was understandable - 7:1 versus one of craziest and best teams - Knights. Kelowna are title contenders, but this game just showed that Falcons have no team who can beat them. If Falcons continue in this way, there are no chance that some other team can win Four Star Cup. Falcons are hungry and ready to revenge previous seasons. They want to win that trophy this season and no cap - they go ''all in'' right now. Maybe even regular season record in winning? Who knows, right?

The power of a goalie
A Jobin didn't had a lot to do in the net, but he played well. 17 saves on 18 total shots. He only let Knights score one goal. There are very small amount of shutouts this season and A Jobin didn't had one, but his game was pretty insane. Confident from the beginning and team had a great chemistry. 7:1 - goalie did his job, skaters his and coaching stuff just had amazing strategies and lines. That's a team work! This team is unbeatable right now and if they keep up this level, there are no opponents for them. Falcons are hungry for that trophy!

Bird Up
In what has become somewhat of a common site, the Detroit Falcons ran away with this game. It was absolute dominance from puck drop to the final whistle with Detroit running away with this one 7-1. The biggest performance came in the 2nd period where Detroit was able to get up four tallies. Kelowna was able to get one in response in this period but they were clearly outmatched the entire game. The Falcons also put two up in the first and added on one more towards the end of the game in the third. Shots for this one ended at 37-18, showing just how carried away this one ended up.

Special Nobodies
When Kelowna's Adam Scianna was called on a hooking penalty in the first 12 seconds of the game, it was expected that this game would spiral out of control. However, the exact opposite happened. Detroit was not able to capitalize on the powerplay and no other penalties would be called all game which is something almost unheard of in the SMJHL. Detroit is sitting pretty on top of the league with their 28% conversion rate on the powerplay but the Knights were cautious about their play and didn't all the offensive Falcons push them into bad calls. Sure, the result is not pretty by any means but Kelowna showed some strong discipline and didn't find themselves hurting further due to bad penalties.

Some water for ranch
With the game quickly getting away from them its not surprising that Kelowna was looking for their more experienced players to step up in an attempt to stop the bleeding. The biggest notable from these players is defenseman Alex Ranch who finished the night with a total time on ice of 24 minutes and 44 seconds. Having played almost half the game it is clear as to why the player was seemingly exhausted at the final whistle. Despite Detroit dominating the leaderboard, Kelowna was able to rely on one of their core players to go out there and give it their best.

Bang bang
7-1 is crazy thing in hockey say what you want. That was some quick and hardcore game from side of Detroit Falcons. All this game had a feeling that Falcons will never stop with scoring and Kelowna Knights just wanted that this game ends faster. In mY opinion that was a luck that Knights had even one goal. Detroit Falcons were fighting and humiliating them. They proved that they have no oponents in this small league and that everyone needs to step out of they way. We will see if they will keep this confidence in play-Offs and will not choke. That is the most important part of hockey seaso
