Game score
Falcons Falcons 2:3 Armada Armada (shootout)

1st period
Armada started very powerful and in first period started with two goal lead. At 11:14 Mitchell van der Heijden opened the game with a goal, but at 13:41, rookie Matthew Sawful, doubled the score by getting his first goal. Both teams had somegreat chances to score, but Falcons just couldn't use their opportunities. Armada had 10 shots after first period, but Falcons 8, which proves that first period was really close shot wise, but not in the score. Armada was just more lucky and used their opportunities. Falcons really struggled with scoring in first period and not only in the first one...

2nd period
In second period, both teams played more ''neutral zone hockey''. There was a lot less offensive possesions by both teams. Both goalies had to rest in this period. Falcons had opportunities in powerplay, but Armada penalty kill was just an unbeatable force. Armada even didn't let them score in 5v3 situation. Armada had really good penalty kill. If they could keep up this type of penalty kill, they could put other SMJHL teams in pretty big danger. Armada had 16 shots after 2nd period, but Falcons - 14. Falcons didn't had their best period and didn't use their opportunities once again. They needed to focus before third period!

3rd period
Falcons needed to come out much stronger and they did that. Falcons took a lot of time to score their first goal, but they did that in the end of third the period. Multiple powerplays for both teams, but only the end of the third period made a hype finally. At 17:05, Falcons forward Cassidy Lhotsky scored Falcons first goal and at 17:54, JmMac NCheese burned their deficit - 2:2! Falcons went ''all in'' in third period and that payed off. In third period, Falcons took lead in shots aswell - after regular time - Falcons had 28 total shots, but Armada - 21.

Overtime & Shootout
It was feeling that Falcons were already thinking about getting victory. There was a feeling that their heads where somewhere else. Falcons goalie had to step up. A. Jobin saved all 7 Armada shots. Armada didn't score and played well in offense, but that wasn't enough to win in overtime. Falcons had only two shots and that was it - still 2:2 and first shootout!
Shootout from both teams were really quiet. This was a glow up game for both goalies, because they played pretty well full game. But one team needed to win and Mitchell van der Hejden stepped up again. He scored goal on Armada second shootout attempt and burned all Falcons hopes to get two points. He was very professional at his shootout and had no competition. Excellent deke and puck was in the net, which allowed Armada to get a victory over Detroit Falcons.

Shocking Result
While it is still very early in the season, seeing the Falcons going into this game at an 8-0-0 record had already put the league on notice. If there was a team that was a favourite to win the Four star Cup, it is this team. The Anchorage Armada went into this game with the intention of putting an end to that though. Within two minutes in the first period, the Armada found themselves with a two-nil lead. This would not be enough as the Falcons clawed back with three minutes left in the game and tie thing up. Anchorage would manage to pull off the win in the shootout and get Detroit their first overtime loss on the season. Maybe the Falcons aren't untouchable as originally thought?

Anchorage Commander
The first star for this game goes to Anchorage's #1 center, van der Heijden. With the first goal of the game and the preliminary assist right after, it's not surprising that the honours of the night go to this man. While the Armada's record has not been fantastic to start the season, the play of van der Heijden has. Playing over 20 minutes a night and being the go-to guy in the dot for many important situations, van der Heijden has shown time and time again why he is someone that the team can count on. Keep an eye on this player for the rest of the season as he very well may run away with the scoring title.

Broadcasting Woes
Going into a season with a new broadcasting partner always presents concerns, but fans of the Post-Game Show were left outraged when the game's feed suddenly became unavailable after Detroit had tied the game. Reporters seemingly could not get a report on what had happened in overtime or the shootout. Only the scoreboard gave the result with no details available. Fans were provided with an image of the scoring sheet that seemingly showed a play button for further review, but this button appears to be unresponsive. This is clearly a concern for the PGS team who need reliable game feeds for their reporting. Keep an eye on this situation as the season develops and hopefully becomes ironed out for future games.

Explosive Start
The Anchorage Armada went into this game with nothing to lose going against the undefeated Detroit falcons who were at an amazing 8-0-0 run to start the season. The first half of the first period started off back and forth, but then Mitchel van der Heijden opened up the game with a goal that sneaked past Detroit. Then shortly after Matthew Sawful added another tally 2 minutes later. Pressure was strong and held them off until the third period. But to start the game off 2-0 as an underdog to the top team is quite a statement to make between two potential finalists. Mitchel did not want to lose this game as he even got the assist on the second goal.

The Comeback
Despite being down 0-2, the detroit Falcons kept the win in sight as they fought off two failed power plays in the second and kept their focus going into the third. Cassidy Livotsky finally nailed one in the third with only 3 minutes to go, and then Jmac NCheese followed up less than a minute later to end the game with a crazy tied score going into OT. Just like that the powerhouse team from Detroit has proved that the game isn't over until the final whistle. The Armada would have to regroup quickly if they wanted any chance of coming back after quite a devasting blow to moral there.

Check it out
One of the main key factors to Anchorage's upset victory is they brutal physicality compared to Detroit this game. Anchorage outhit the Falcons 26-15, and continued that pressure in the second period when Norris dropped the gloves against Williams. Being able to tangle up on the faceoff dot winning 37-30 may have also been the difference maker giving Anchorage as many opportunities as possible get their light lit up. Surprisingly disciplined with no big checking-related penalties with just a pair of holding calls that chalked up more to just being too aggressive at getting the puck. But knocking the Falcons down helps open up the ice and get those needed points.

Falcons upset
Detroit Falcons did not lose in general this game. They have that one point and they have leader spot in standings in total but they lost this game in result. We have not seen many games who ended in overtime and this was not either one of them. It ended in shootout with Armada luck and succesful victory over this seasons possible champions. Mitchell Van Der Heijden showed his skills with two total points and game wining goal in shootout. Armada was the whole game much better than Falcons. Was that a luck or really thing that could happen any game from Armada? We will see in finals

League Best Goalie?
A. Jobin had a fantastic game all the way through until overtime - while it may seem as though this could press people away from viewing him as the best performing goalie in the SMJHL, his season stats still show otherwise. Forcing the Armada to take so many shots in the overtime shootout still gave the Falcons a distinct chance to come away with a win, however a lack of effectiveness on the other end of the ice ultimately led to Anchorage coming away with the win. While Jobin has a way to go to being the best goalie in the Juniors, he continues to prove the decision to elect him as an all star to be correct.

League Best Team?
Detroit had been the force to beat leading into this game, and a strong showing should see them remain high up in the power rankings, however this game proves they are not quite the unstoppable force they were once thought to be. The Armada have proved that defeat is a possibility for the Detroit Falcons. While Detroit mantained a strong showing of shots on goal, this is one of the few games we have seen where they have failed to significantly outshoot their opponent, and the Armada made a show of force by delivering a significant amount more hits through the course of the game.

Can it be done again?
The Falcons coming into this game at 8-0 led many to doubt that they could be beaten once, let alone several times over the course of the season. If the Anchorage have exposed a weakness, it's difficult to identify where. Though they led the game in hits, most of the other statistics reflected the close nature of this game and a win in a lengthy overtime shootout hardly shows dominance for either team. While the Falcons failed to deliver their usual statistical dominance there is no specific area that we can attribute to this win other than sheer luck, however history repeats itself so there's no telling what could be in store for these two teams in the future.
