PGS S53 Game 7 - Vancouver Whalers vs Colorado Raptors
#1

Game score
Whalers Whalers 5:3 Raptors Raptors

1st period
From the beginning we all knew that this game will be fast and it was. Only two minutes in, Whalers had first penalty and Raptors used their chance. At fifth minute, Hiroshi Ohira opened the game - 1:0. It wasn't an easy period for any of teams. Whalers came back strong and Miro Slapskinnenen had great opportunity when game was 12 minutes in, which allowed Whalers to get back in to the game - 1:1. Everyone thought that it was it for first period, but last word said Luke Spinelli. Only 57 seconds before first period ended, he scored and Vancouver went to locker room after first period as winners - 2:1. Great opportunities for both teams, but Whalers came a bit stronger in first period, even after much worse start of the game.

2nd period
Start of the period again was pretty hard for Whalers. Only 20 seconds in and already penalty for James Brown. Three minutes in second period, defender Anrijs Asts played well on blue line and smashed puck in to Whalers net - 2:2. Four minutes later, Sven Svenson made amazing pass to Bryce Turner, which scored third goal for Raptors and they were again in lead. Raptors had 100% powerplay goals - 3 powerplays and 3 goals. Tabled turned quick - William Hartmann fourteen minutes in to second period, scored for Whalers and game was tied again. There was feeling that everything have happened in this game - Raptors had lead, game were tied, Whalers had lead and again it was tied. Such a pressure for both teams before third period. A lot of wasted chances for both teams aswell.

3rd period
It was Whalers time to shine. They started finally period good and in second minute got lead again. Tiberius Maximus used amazing opportunity and had his team in the lead quickly in third period. Whalers continued to play undisciplined hockey - two penalties in third period aswell, but Raptors didn't use these opportunities. Whalers had powerplay aswell, but their powerplays were empty at this game. They were fighting till the end, but that wasn't enough. Francois Breton scored empty net goal in last second of the game and it was it - victory for Whalers with ending result 5:3. Can't forget crazy dominance for Marcus Ohlsson who assisted three of all five Whalers goals. Great team play by Whalers resulted in crazy and really important victory for them. Raptors definitely want to turn back time, so they can fix some mistakes in this game. Really wasted game and lost two points...

Passing Swede

The first star of the game goes to Whalers center Marcus Ohlsson. The Vancouver playmaker was everywhere he needed to be without making a true splash. He was what made the Whalers tick in this game and set his teammates up in the best possible way and gave them the glory. He assisted a goal in each of the three periods and I am sure that without him Vancouver would have definitely lost this game. It is not always about those players that are able to put the puck in the back of the net, but about those that play those killer perfect passes that make scoring that much easier and that is what Ohlsson did this game.

Winning while in the sin bin

I have heard that the Whalers are a fighting team and they definitely showed that tonight. In total they were able to amass 10 penalty minutes, compared to the two of Colorado and yet they were still able to beat the Raptors. What is more impressive is that each of the three goals scored by Colorado were done on the powerplay. This means that while even strength, the Whalers dominated the Raptors, but they can not think that they can get away with this type of game again. Against higher class opposition this will definitely come and bite them in the ass and is something that needs to be looked at in training.

Powerplay covering weaknesses?

The Raptors were able to spend 10 minutes on the powerplay during this game and were able to score three goals, which is impressive. On the other hand they were only able to garner 26 shots on goal in total during the game. So first off they can be very happy with how effective their powerplay unit is and is definitely an advantage. Then on the flip side of the coin, how bad is your even strength play if you can only amass 26 shots in total even with such long periods of powerplay compared to your opposition. Hopefully the powerplay unit does not mask other weaknesses present on the team.

Bad luck of Raptors
Raptors were one of teams who was supposed to be title contenders but losses versus teams like Whalers this season just shows something different. Is it bad luck or just bad team this season? Losing versus Whalers multiple times in this season just showes that Raptors can not make big play-Offs run to fight for Four star cup, but no matter what - next season will be for Raptors. Close games, but most important is points not how close the game ends so again bad luck for Raptors and losing streak continues. Hurts to watch this type of games where you have been in a lead and fighted with all your heart but sometimes there is not second option

First minutes of all periods
It is interesting to see that in all periods, there were fast goals. Like first period start- Raptors goal. Second period start- Raptors goal again. Third period start- Whalers goal. And in last second goal as well. It is something rare in hockey to see that type of coincidence. Ending result is pretty big and it is not very often when you see the game going through eight total goals or even more. Game was really interesting and most interesting part was that periods started really quick and with some amazing and beautiful goals. For simulating league it is cool to see much goals

Weird how three stars function works
If we watch three stars then it is interesting and weird at the same time. First star is from winning team- Whalers player Marcus Ohlsson with 3 assists. That is good and understandable right? Second star is Chris Cerulo with one assist from team who lost- Raptors. But third star is Luke Spinelli from Whalers- one goal and two assists. How is it possible that second star have one point and lost the game but third star has three points in total and won the game? Plus he has even a GOAL!!!!! Very interesting how this simulating machine works but I guess there is some other explanation for this thing

The Faceoff Circle

Another rough game for the Raptors, in which they were outshot and outscored as they have used us to this year. The silver lining for Colorado is a slight advantage in the faceoff department, winning 32 challenges out of 61.

Faceoff Hero
Henrik Lundqvist Jr.  Raptors
Lundqvist is one of the best in the league this year, and one of the most constant. He showed why in this game, winning 10 faceoffs and losing only five for a 66.7% success rate.

Faceoff Zero
Stracimir Petrovic Whalers
Petrovic saw a lot of icetime, the second-most of all forwards in this game and the most of all centers. By the laws of average, he took part in more faceoffs than anyone else, but didn't do great : he managed to win in seven of his 19 trials (36.8%).
