Linus Grimstad Pre-Draft Press Conference

Ask me about the draft, my current player, my history in the SHL, whatever you want really.  Saw other people doing PCs and I haven't done one in a while so figured it'd be fun to do it again.

Honestly, a lot more than I expected.  I kinda came back on a whim, partially motivated by the switch to FHM being interesting.  But since I’ve come back I’ve honestly really been enjoying the league in general.  It’s really cool to see how much the league has expanded since I’ve gone honestly, and I’m liking that there’s a lot of new stuff combined with the things I’m familiar with.  And FHM has been pretty enjoyable so far with both the live sims and the player building.  I was at the point with hockey sim leagues that I felt like I’d done just about every build I could because STHS didn’t really offer much variety as far as player builds go - once you found out the most important attributes, you kinda couldn’t ignore them and there really wasn’t a lot of variety as far as what kind of player you wanted to be.  I’m pretty unfamiliar with FHM but I do quite like that there are actual player roles, so there’s actually more variety as far as what your player can do in-game.  And I like that the attributes are actually more specific - for example, it seems like your goalscoring can actually change based on the kind of shot you’re taking, or your defensive attributes are actually specific about what kind of things your player is doing on defense.  It’s taking a bit of time to learn as someone who isn’t an FHM player or much of a hockey fan but I kinda like that because a new engine kinda feels like it’s offering a bunch of new opportunities.

This is a hard one to say for sure, and I’d probably be happy to be selected by a good amount of SHL teams on draft day.  But I can kind of gauge some of the places I’d like to go based on stuff like members, team identity/history, and how well my player would fit there.  Obviously I know (and have gotten to know) some people here, but there are a bunch of new (to me) members that could either be the best person ever or a complete asshole and I’d have no idea since there’s only so much I can tell from the forum.  Based on what I can tell, though, here’s my provisional top three, in no particular order:

San Francisco Pride pride -  My interest is limited by the fact that I’m pretty sure I don’t know anyone on this team.  So I know little to nothing about the GMs, the locker room, or what my potential teammates would be like and as a result I can’t really say that I absolutely, 100%, want to go to this team.  But based on what I can tell, this team checks a lot of boxes for me.  I like the team name, location, and logo a lot.  I like that they’re one of the teams in the SHL that has never won a cup, because I enjoy playing for underdog teams in sim leagues like this and I think it’d be cool to help a franchise win their first cup.  Plus they seem to have a need for a center.  So I think I could fit in pretty well there player-wise.

Tampa Bay Barracuda Barracuda -  This is a franchise that has been around since the very beginning but is currently on their sixth team name and has only won one cup.  So I’d love to be a part of helping to turn things around and establish the team in Tampa as they start their big rebuild.  I like the team identity, too - name and logo is cool and I’m a big fan of the teal/navy color scheme.  Another significant reason is that I’ve gotten kinda familiar with some of the members on their team via the Kraken locker room so I think it’d be nice to be on an SHL team with them.

Los Angeles Panthers  Panthers - This is probably the team with the people I’m most familiar with, I think.  There might be other teams with more people that I recognize on them, but not necessarily people that I would say I “know” well, if that makes sense.  (It’s hard to categorize that kind of thing on an online forum.)  The Panthers have, from what I can tell, a solid amount of members that I think I’d enjoy being teammates with.  Plus I was briefly co-GM of the Panthers a while ago, so even though I don’t have an attachment to any particular SHL team, I have a slight affinity for LA.

It was actually much harder than I expected to make this top three.  Truth be told, there are a bunch of teams that I’d love to be drafted by that I considered for this list but just barely missed out.  Plus there were still others that wouldn’t necessarily be in my “top tier” but that I wouldn’t have any problems being drafted by.  So I could’ve easily named a top five, or a top ten.  That’s not to mention that I have no idea where I’m going and not 100% sure what the GMs will be looking for positionally which leaves me very unsure (and also excited for the draft).

05-11-2020, 12:29 PMJSS Wrote: When you first joined, you said you're not sure how active you'll be past juniors? Is this still the case?
That’s definitely changed.  I originally said that because of my experience with my last two players (Turd Ferguson Jr. and William Goddard), where I decided to return on a whim and was really only active for a week or so.  While I was interested while I first created those players, that interest didn’t really hold for very long.  So when I created Grimstad, I was curious about the league but I also wasn’t sure whether or not I was going to stay long-term or if it was going to be just like the last two times where I went inactive pretty early.  Plus I wasn’t sure if this was just going to be a thing while I had free time during the quarantine.  I didn’t want to say “I’m back and I’m going to be super active again” and all that, then end up not fulfilling that promise and misleading an SMJHL GM in the process.

But now I can say that I’m still active and interested in the league.  That’s partially due to what I mentioned when answering the first question, and also is down to being a part of an active and enjoyable locker room with the Kraken.  I plan to be fairly consistently active with Grimstad, although again I don’t want to get ahead of myself and over-promise.  So I’ll just say I’m hoping for a decent career.  Of the players that I was actually active with, none of them had particularly long careers.  I’m aiming to change that with this player.

Honestly, it’s been nice. I think a big difference between my return now and previous attempts at comebacks is the popularity of Discord now, which really helps with making locker rooms more active and interesting. For the most part it’s been a good environment, there’s a good combination of past Kraken players, more experienced members, and newer members and it’s been cool to get to know some of the members who are either new or joined while I was gone. Obviously it’s been taking a while to get to know who everyone is around the league but Discord in general has been helpful in that regard.

You know, it’s funny you should mention that. Wagner definitely runs the place with an iron fist, he’s got a bit of a temper too. You know, there was this one time when I had a bad game, I went back into the locker room and --
(muffled shouts from the other room, Grimstad becomes visibly nervous)
Wait, what was I talking about? Oh yeah, Jimmy Wagner. Great guy. Wonderful guy. Best captain I’ve ever had. Best teammate I’ve ever had. Don’t believe any of the bad stuff you hear about him.
(All joking aside, though, sve7en is cool and has been a good captain in the locker room)

There are a couple things. As I’ve mentioned before, the variety in player builds (at least from what I’ve seen so far) is great - especially compared to STHS. Makes me way more interested in sticking around and seeing what happens both with my player and with others. But I also have to say I really enjoy the live sims. I’m not quite sure how much work it is for the simmers, but I’ve found it much more enjoyable to watch than a regular PbP or a box score (although I do wish we actually had box scores more readily available). Now if only the index was better…

I don’t know if we really have one individual prankster. A couple of us will do some pranks or good-natured teasing but that’s about it. Because we have a bunch of rookies on this team, a couple of us new guys will joke around and play minor jokes like hiding each others’ gear or something but there’s not really a veteran that’s known for being a prankster. I imagine one of us will become one over time though and my money’s on Friedland.

To be honest it’s taken a lot of time. I started doing graphics very shortly after I joined - I was 12 and just downloaded GIMP to try and make graphics for the SHL. I believe this is the first graphic I made, back in November of 2010, as part of a graphics competition around S2 or S3. There was a lot of stuff I didn’t understand or know how to do back then, clearly. So I think part of what helped me to get to where I am today has been absorbing as much as I can, developing my own taste/style, and looking to other people’s sigs and graphic design work in general for inspiration. An important thing for me early on was looking at what other people did that I liked, then finding out how to do that thing. To an extent, I still do that. I like to keep an eye on Behance for graphic design stuff, and there are some past and present sigmakers that inspire me (a lot of karey’s stuff has really caught my attention since rejoining the SHL). Over time you kind of build up this “bag of tricks” in the back of your head made up of your own ideas and inspiration from others that you can dip into when you need an idea - maybe I can do the text this way, maybe I can use this effect, maybe I can add a clipping mask or a shape here, etc. A lot of graphic design (and, as a result, sigmaking) is subjective once you get past the basics. There are some things that other people love that I’m not a fan of, and there are some things that I love that other people aren’t a fan of. So outside of some tutorials here and there the biggest suggestion I can make is just keep going and try to make sigs that you like. And obviously the graphics discord is a good place to get more specific advice/feedback on sigs, but I notice you’re already over there.

I mean, playing against the entire Falcons team was pretty difficult haha, they were just so good this season. Guys like Edward Williams and Kaarlo Kekkonen come to mind specifically, they were so hard to play against because I like to have the puck and be in the offensive zone but they’re just so dominant on offense that they force you to play in your own zone for a while. So if you make one mistake, you’re toast. Mitchell van der Heijden from Anchorage was another guy like that, he was just a guy that you knew you couldn’t be caught out of position with and that just makes you much more cautious on the ice. Defensively I feel like Alex Petrenko from Anaheim doesn’t get as much credit as he should, too. It was so hard to get things going on offense when he was on the ice.
