New Captain, New Crew.
With the conclusion of the S54 SMJHL draft, the Maine timber leadership popped the cork off a bottle of expensive french champagne. The newly appointed Russian captain of the Maine Timber, Valentin Kalashnikov, was privileged with an invitation to attend the event with the senior members of the organization. The excitement was palpable in the room and as cheers rang out with every pick, while phone calls started being made, team captain Kalashnikov just stared diligently at the stream and kept scribbling in a small black leather notebook he had in his suit pocket. When Co-GM Hans Hammersmith approached Valentin about the notebook and if everything was okay. Valentin looked up from his notes, smiled a gap-tooth hockey grin at the boss and simply stated “Training.”
After the libations had died down Kalshnikov went down to the hotel bar and ordered a Kahlua Espresso Vodka and pulled out his custom made large size smartphone so that his shattered and reformed hands could actually type out a text with limited typos. He immediately started contacting rookies at 2:30am after a long day of drafts, he wanted to see dedication and responsiveness. In addition to the newly drafted rookies, he also went through the entire rostered player list in his phone and contacted them asking for a time for a one on one training session. Most of the scheduling was done by 7:00am after 15 Kahlua Vodkas and when the last of the rostered players woke up to respond to a text sent four hours earlier. Satisfied with the fantastic draft, and that his “special training” scheduling was complete Kalashnikov collapsed on the bar counter with excitement for the future of Maine.

Dawn of a New Era.
The next weeks were extremely busy for Kalashnikov as he wanted to use the meetings to get to know every player on a personal level and also to convey clearly to the players the extremely high expectations he has for this squad. He will not accept failure and wants to ensure everyone is performing at maximum potential. Reminding them that if they require any resources to play better they can reach out to him and he can get it done, Kalashnikov has a knack at getting anything/everything people ask for. Starting with the brand new members of the team Valentin embarked on his training crusade to make the Maine Timber fully ready for the S54 SMJHL season.

A Night in St.Petersbjerg. @AgentSmith630
[Image: PlushJadedDwarfrabbit-size_restricted.gif]
Starting with the order drafted because Kalashnikov lacks all creative drive and simply focuses on culturing a winning squad he reached out to the 1st Maine Timber pick in the S54 draft. Rickard Bjerg, second overall in the rookie draft, impressed the Maine Timber organization with his deep understanding of the game and specifically how it is played within the junior league. The quickly discovered player experienced a good amount of ice-time with the Timber towards the end of the S53 season. Missing the playoffs stung but Bjerg’s attitude at the time really stood out and his passion for the team in the locker room was great. Kalashnikov wanted to touch on this intellectual side of Rickard and so invited him to the scholarly city of St. Petersburg in western Russia to discuss strategy and life philosophy when it comes to a career within the SHL system. Kalashnikov through his ample connections to the motherland was able to get a private tour of the Hermitage museum in the heart of the city where he and Bjerg could take the day to ponder the future. Goals were set, dreams acknowledged and both parties left the city happy for the coming season with high hopes.

Jax to the Max. @Im_A_Boonana
[Image: giphy-downsized-medium.gif]
Jax Gracie was another familiar face from before the draft that also saw the ice under the Green and Brown during the S53 season. Jax has come alive on the forward squad that was rather sleepy during the last Maine season. With speed and a great game-sense Gracie was able to reinvigorate the squad through the finish and through the eventually lost playoff battle with Carolina. (Not like it mattered, Carolina may have won the battle but Maine won the Draft war). Gracie expressed their love for nature many times in the locker room so Kalashnikov conducted the training with Gracie as a white-water kayaking trip on the Ottawa River in Canada. The river is voted by main enthusiasts as one of the most rewarding kayak trips in the world. The 2 day trek was rewarding and Jax Gracie learned a lot about the Timber culture and where Kalashnikov plans to take the team alongside his intense demeanor when commanding instructions along the river. Captain Valentin apologized to many children along the river who were exposed to all sorts of expletives in a variety of languages.

We Be Ballin’! @jcfbey01
[Image: LjTG.gif]
Victor Ball was the third pick made by the Maine Timber, at 20th overall in the second round. The legacy behind Victor was well known to Valentin who was traded to the newly rebranded Baltimore Platoon. Victor’s father Kristaps Ball is a player for the Platoon who is held in high regard amongst the team. Impressed with the rapid growth of his son, Kalashnikov took Victor on a trial of manhood and legacy, a strip-club tour of the deep south of the US. Starting in Miami and working through Orlando and Atlanta. Over west through New Orleans and finishing in Houston. Victor was at first shocked and thought Kalashnikov was joking but Valentin soon shared graphic details with the youngster about the party that Captain Kalashnikov and Kristaps had during the offseason. In order to prove his family legacy and that he was still just as capable as his father Victor went on a Caligula-esque rampage through the Flordia, Georgia, Lousiana, and Texas that resulted in 14 arrest warrants, one missing person report and two Chupacabra sightings. Kalashnikov will not be doubting the Balls anytime soon.

Practice Makes Perfectsson. @Zema
[Image: giphy.gif]
Alexander Oscarsson picked up immediately after Victor Ball with the 21st pick of the SMJHL draft. He first met the team right at the absolute tailend of the S53 season, barely even getting to see practice icetime let alone game icetime. Thrilled to have more familiar faces back, Kalashnikov got right to work with Alexander. With the ice already broken between the two it was straight to business as this was the most normal training Kalashnikov had over his entire training crusade. Alexander was keen to practice as his limited time on the ice last season left a burning passion to hit the rink. The rigorous 3 days saw Valentin continuously hiring goons to throw bottles from the stands onto the rink while Oscarsson practiced in order to make his movements sharp and help him tune out a rowdy home crowd. “We need to win on the road just as much as home!” barked Captain Kalashnikov, he joined Oscarsson on the ice during the dangerous practice to show he wasn’t just talk and was all in on helping improve the team any way he could. Oscarsson more than proved himself and was excited to hit the preseason running like a full speed train. Lean, mean and ready to focus on what it takes to win.

Riders on the Strom. @sulovilen
[Image: 68kfft.gif]
Walton Stromberg was a last minute name to enter the extremely deep S54 rookie draft. Rumours were buzzing amongst scouts of his mysterious origins and Valentin instantly recognized the potential talent in the enigma that is Stromberg. Instantly responding to his late night summons, Kalashnikov was impressed by the timely nature of Walton and figured that time was exactly the key needed for cracking this code. A long and arduous journey was needed to help fully test Stromberg and Kalashnikov settled on a back-country horse ride bushcraft week long adventure into the Sonoran desert. If anything can put a man to the test and get them to show who they really are, this was it. Stromberg was immediately proving his resourcefulness during the voyage and the long talks and long periods of silence really confirmed his commitment to the team. Kalashnikov was thoroughly impressed and happy that Stromberg was on the Maine Timber and excited by the great potential of the player.

Jesse James and Seppdance Kid. @crutch
 [Image: UnknownAromaticApe-size_restricted.gif]
Jesse Seppanen first pick of the fourth round in the S54 draft. Touted himself as quite the puckslinger as well as little gunslinger as well. Posting on his instagram a couple of videos of him shooting a revolver with quite some speed. Impressed by any form of marksmanship Kalashnikov took Seppanen to private range in Maine to conduct a firearms and leadership training course. Using what some would consider unethical training techniques, Kalashnikov and Seppanen were able to really acquire some intense combat and martial arts experience that will help with quick reaction and physicality skills out on the ice come the preseason. Seppanen had many questions for Kalashnikov’s background that went unanswered but the quick-thinking and quick-shooting player will clearly prove to be a useful asset to the Maine Timber firing line come gametime.

From Russia with Baranov. @Jorec
[Image: giphy.gif]
Drafting a Russian defenseman in the fourth is something that made Kalashnikov very ecstatic. This was something in his wheelhouse that he knew how to work with easily. This was to be solved and tested like all Russians are, with a rewarding ice-fishing and sauna trip to Lake Baikal. Baranov already knew how to get there so they met on the shore with many groceries for the cabin on the frozen lake. The amount of liquor involved could have been considered hoarding had it not been for the rapid rate of consumption. On day two Kalashnikov revealed to Baranov that this was less training and more a paid vacation needed by the captain because this crusade had gotten a bit out of scope considering the absolutely massive draft class Maine picked up this season. Adrik clearly didn’t mind and enjoyed the classic Russian vacation and was able to pick up some insight into how the Maine defense is structured and focuses their game.

A Man who Needs No Introduction…  @the_paytonium
[Image: tenor.gif]
Hennessy-Gallchobhar O’McGuiness is a name that speaks volumes, literally. Drafted in the Fourth round, the mouthful of a name caught the eyes of Kalashnikov due to the many references to alcohol. Surely it is no mistake of judgement to presume that he is of royal brewing blood. This notion had to be explored by Kalashnikov who took it upon himself to take O’McGuiness on a tasting tour of Bourbon Whiskey in Kentucky. No not in Scotland or Ireland, those would be too familiar to the palette of Henn-dog. Kalashnikov had to test his skills in adapting to changing circumstances under high pressure situations, such as partying with Valentin. Proving to be a true connoisseur of spirits and not just a larper, Kalashnikov was taken aback by the immense encyclopedic knowledge of liquor that O’McGuiness possessed. Perhaps this player has earned his name, what remains to be seen is if this skill carries over to the ice. Kalashnikov remembered a team saying the Maine Timber like to say before a game: the better you drink, the better you play. The future sure is bright for Hennessy-Gallchobhar in Maine.

Marshall Law. @DonutDefender
[Image: giphy.gif]
First pick of the fifth round was All-American Alex Marshall, who blew the socks off and with the legacy of law enforcement in the family. Similar to the training done with Seppanen but with a much more american twist, Kalashnikov took Marshall to Ft. Worth SWAT to join them on house-clearing training. With a focus on fast reactions and communication Marshall and Kalashnikov were able to hone in on clear and audible communications during hectic and loud situations. Alex was happy to participate in something that showcased his family’s legacy and helped him prepare for the intense season coming up for the Maine Timber players. Fast hands and fast eyes were the key takeaways and a focus on dominating the enemy in the offensive zone. Under Kalashnikov the team has to be ready for everything and anything, but the goal remains the same.

Move over Ricardo, Reynolds got a new driver. @sharksisback
 [Image: tumblr_ook3x9l80s1siem3jo1_400.gif]
William Reynolds was a fifth round pick for the Maine Timber from the British Isles and is no newcomer to speedy sports. The lightning quick winger is sure to make his mark on the ice but many don’t know that his start in competitive sports started in the Formula youth karting series that is ever so popular in the UK. Never graduating out of the amatuer circuit Reynolds shifted into hockey and never looked back but Kalashnikov wanted to give that racing spirit another spin with his training. Taking the young rookie and going to Silverstone circuit in GB was a great excuse to blow some Timber cash on an exclusive track time with the recently vacated and currently unused Renault F1 car. Reynolds was a natural and took no time crushing lap times with the car, his speed is clearly not only reserved for the ice. Many F1 journos rumour this track time with William Reynolds to be the reason Daniel Riccardo left Renault, his career could not handle the embarrassment that would follow from being shown up by a recently drafted minor hockey player in F1 racing. Kalashnikov had to escort Reynolds from the track after getting swarmed by agents from Renault to replace Riccardo on the racing team. Not willing to give up such an asset Maine Timber lawyers are now reaching out to Renault agents with cease-and-desist orders and harassment lawsuits for constantly trying to headhunt Reynolds away from the team.

Ain’t Nathan but a Thang. @KaleSalad
[Image: sg4bKkD.gif?noredirect]
Nathan Thomas is an offence oriented defenceman from Swift Current, Saskatchewan who was drafted first in the sixth round of the s54 SMJHL draft. Kalashnikov’s focus with Nathan was to harness the offensive capabilities and potential of the rookie by boosting his explosiveness. He wanted to harness the power of long range attack and explain how to shoot and move the best way he could. That was by smuggling Thomas into a war-games excursion held by the Finnish military and to embed themselves in an artillery unit. Kalashnikov immediately went to action and wanted to see how Thompson would react to the frankly ridiculous circumstances. Adaptability is extremely key to success in the SMJHL and Nathan proved he had tons to spare. Instantly blending into the team and soon taking command after a simulated injury. He earned two medals from the Finnish army before they quickly learned we were in the country illegally and were deported back to the US. Kalashnikov remains vigilant that the training was worth it despite Maine Timber PR yelling at him about some controversies about the trip, with such quotes as “the media headlines are making our team look like an international security threat!”

Bobbin’ and Poppin’ Boxing. @bluebob22
 [Image: giphy.gif]
Bob Poppinfresh is a fresh rookie who looked to make an immediate impact after being drafted by doing a little boxing shuffle on stage while accepting the Maine Timber jersey. Kalashnikov loved that little spark fire and so when the training finally arrived the two met with Gennady Golovkin old time friend of the Kalashnikov family who helped the two with a little boxing workshop. Located in a farming village in Central Kazakhstan the two had plenty of time outside of cell phone reception to simply work on the mechanics of combat, balance and physical strength. Being a defensemen on the Timber means putting in all your effort every night, leaving it all out on the ice and Poppinfresh really took to the intense and regimented life of boxing camp. Ready to take on the world, the rookie looks forward to hitting the ice next season and Kalashnikov is excited to see what Bob-Pop can bring in terms of physicality and game impact.

Choppin’ up Suzucchinis. @rieksts
[Image: NippyTeemingBass-small.gif]
The last but certainly not least pickup for the Maine Timber was goalie Keisuke Suzuki. Absolutely lightning speed hands and laser like focus. Kalashnikov had to put the goalie to the test so alongside Leo Bloomfield @BloomeyGB the trio held a Iron chef like cooking competition to hone in on hand eye coordination and Kalashnikov’s number one key, adaptability. Adaptability was tested with the mystery ingredient of the challenge which was eel. Suzuki made a great grilled and sauced eel dish, while Kalashnikov struggled to get his stove to work properly and ended up using the ice-cream machine to make an inedible monstrosity. Leo Bloomfield of course dominated the competition by making a fantastic eel pie with mashed potatoes and peas. The judges who were the Maine HO easily and unanimously voted for Leo’s dish. This was a great humbling experience for Kalashnikov who had previously been quite confident in his performance across his many journeys to this point. The rookie goalie Suzuki showed the captain up handley and still learned many things from the now entrenched Leo Bloomfield.

Council of Elders.

Finally Valentin had to address all his existing teammates upon which he would rely on to help him mentor this draft class. This training was more a formal dinner/meeting held at Italian restaurant Del Posto in NYC. The team bought the location for the night and the current players held an isolated dinner inside the wine cellar. Kalashnikov addressed the men about the season upon them, how he felt the team stood on the precipice of greatness, and that if they believed in the Maine Timber this could be it. This could be it. But everyone has to be all in, everyone has to stand together to bring this one home. The Timber are the best team in the league, every player already knows that, but we have to prove it, we have to earn it. Together we're a god-damn force to be reckoned with and it was time the league learned that first hand. Kalashnikov dismissed the players but held back his two assistant captains, M.A.S @Rabidsponge21and Alexander Roach @Faelax. Valentin poured another glass of wine for each of them and asked them to sit down so they could discuss the distribution of responsibilities each of them would have to make sure the Maine Timber have every opportunity to win it all this coming season. The talk lasted for quite some time with little noise coming from the secluded dining room. After a couple hours and a couple bottles of wine later the captains emerged from the room confident of what lies in store for the Maine Timber.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I love this team, let’s win it all.
