Hamilton Steelhawks Add to Rookie Crop

After a very successful S53 SHL Draft that saw Hamilton add 4 great prospects between picks 28 and 36, they added 3 more talented youngsters to the crop of promising future Steelhawks in the S54 Draft. These past couple drafts will be very important in solidifying the future of the defending Challenge Cup champions, whose current core obviously won't last forever and will eventually need younger replacements.

16th Overall: Simon Takshak @GeckoeyGecko Knights

With the final pick of the first round, the Hawks took Kelowna winger Simon Takshak. It was heavily rumoured in the lead-up to the draft that Takshak was the number one target for Hamilton at 16, and were even willing to move up to solidify their chances at snagging him, so they are certainly very happy to have gotten their guy at this pick. Takshak was the 4th overall pick for the Knights in the S53 SMJHL Draft, and although he only played a small role in the team this season, he is regarded as a player who will be very important for the rest of his juniors career. The tough winger had 2 goals and 7 points in 48 games for Kelowna, playing just over 10 minutes a game. In an expanded role for the Knights this season, Takshak's numbers will largely be expected to improve significantly.

32nd Overall: Adam Friedland @Bongo Kraken

Hamilton decided to take the bruising blueliner Adam Friedland with the last pick of round two, keeping up their theme of taking players with some grit about them. Friedland was an undrafted FA signing for Carolina during the S53 season, and always made his presence known on the ice, getting 94 penalty minutes and 86 hits. He also played a decently important role despite being a rookie, playing over 17 minutes per game, and getting minutes on both the powerplay and penalty kill units. He had 4 goals and 14 points from the blue line last season for the Kraken, and projects to be a good SHL squad player. He joins as the only defenseman prospect in the Steelhawks system, making his development all the more important for Hamilton's future.

48th Overall: Walito Gretzky @Evoner Whalers

When players were going off the board quickly in round 3 as the draft wound down, Hamilton got another player they wanted very much in Whalers winger Walito Gretzky. Gretzky was a very late signing for the Whalers, joining right before the SMJHL trade deadline, and he had 3 points in the 15 games he played. The offensive forward is expected to play a bigger role than he did in his part appearance in S53, and he could look to be a sneaky value late pick for the Steelhawks in this draft.

With these three players, the Steelhawks bring 3 more promising talents to a table that already includes great S53 talents Rikard Hammarberg, Kriss Darzins, A Jobin and (Clean) Andrei Kostitsyn, along with S51 winger Al Kayhall, who is being called up for his rookie season in S54, and potential roster player and vocal locker room presence Mega Tron. With the squad proving they have the quality to be consistently competing for the championship in their current window, securing the future who will take over once the current core of the team fizzles out is key.  Steelhawks
