S54 PT #1 - A New Focus

From a User's perspective, this season is much of the same but with some refinements. The majority of Los Angeles works with Mook to create our builds. We essentially let Mook know what kind of player we want to build and he creates builds that fit those player roles. Last season, things went good for my player. The goal was to make a Quarterback defensemen who would serve as a primary offensive player on the backend. This is a far cry from the defensive player I was building in STHS. This pilot run went very well. Cleary finished with 15 goals, putting him near the top, and 36 points to cap off a great season. As such, we felt like we didn't need to do a ton to keep Cleary playing well. Mook and I used the redistribution to refine some of Cleary's offensive skills to give him a better output from the backend. Overall, we were both happy with the growth and hope it translates to more results for the Panthers.

After my first season in the new FHM-based league, I was a little disappointed by the fact that Jack Kanoff was better than me. Even though he has more TPE and was on a better team, he is tacky and lame. So I tried to get more advice on my build this time around and asked sim guru (I think. He could have just as easily pretended to know what he was talking about and I'd have been no wiser) Teddy for how I should design my player. This go around I think I am a little less specialized and have more TPE in more important attributes for a defenseman. We'll see how it goes, but I'm pretty excited. I think it also gives me a lot more flexibility for whenever I get called up because at that point I can kind of build however I want on top of it instead of already being committed to a certain path.

Well one season in to the new system and we continue to see tweaks and adjustments from users across the league. I think as a goalie it is hard to find pivoting changes because alot is relied upon the players in front of you when testing. So much of my testing revolved around maximizing my primary attributes and trying to find plateaued auxillary attributes. Meaning I focused on keeping my intangibles like passing as a goalie... skating... it is all necessary yes, but I don't think they necessarily need to be maxed. In saying this... I also think the mental attributes should be looked at for goalies as well. I think they are set just fine for players... But as for SHL level goalies, we do need to find some improvements into variation. How a 1600 goalie is putrid, while a 800+ can be lights out intrigues me. A big facet is the team infront of them... but thats not always the case.

I've been a pretty selfish player during the rebuild just aiming for the most output possible. The results have been mixed. I was one of the top rookies for scoring in my rookie season and was a top ten goal scorer the following season but Texas were not going anywhere. This offseason was the first time I really started focusing on other things. I can score all the goals in the world but if we don't win, what does it matter? I did a handful of offensive drills but I really focused on being one part of a much larger machine. I have been working on my defense a lot and that is my goal this season. I have a solid grasp on the offensive fundamentals but something is lacking on the other side of the ice. I need to become a more complete player and more of a team player. Positioning, checking, and staying in shape are the main things I will be working on. I only have a few more seasons of improvement so I need to do as much for the team as possible going forward.

obviously as a user and finding the perfect build and what to spend your tpe on for your player is a big deal around here, after the first season we saw hamilton have a meta for their team and used that meta to completely dominate the season and eventually take home the cup on the back of that. Strength and defense is the name of the game in fhm going forward and having a nice round build so your playing isnt a dumpster fire at some aspect of his game because it really hinders the overall performace. So with that being said i believe a lot if not all users are going to use this redistribution to further their defensive game and be a strong fucking ox just like the steelhawks players were. We will see how this plays out and maybe there is a strat to counter the str def builds but only time will tell for that.

Looking back now that the offseason has passed, having the free redistribution looming for most of the season became both a blessing and a curse for me. On the one hand, my build sucked for what I was trying to accomplish in the first place and knowing that I could correct it had I decided to stay down another season in juniors was certainly a nice option to have. But on the other hand, especially with the reality that I would be graduating to the SHL, the prospect of a radical build change was very enticing on more than one occasion. I've ultimately decided to remain on the path of an offense-minded winger, specifically building to increase my Sniper playstyle strength in the sim. I've had to sacrifice significantly in some areas but only as the season gets started. I think I've built Trevino in a way that I can still pivot into a different playstyle if the need or desire arises later this season or next but still retain the scoring upside that I currently envision him having.

Alexei Petrikov decided to take the offseason to work on some of his more physical defensive skills. Once of the things he has been working on is checking and hitting. One of his training coaches came up with a fun drill for him to work on involving some of the tackling dummies from American Football. His coach sets up the dummies around the ice, and Petrikov has to skate around and check them in a specific order. To make sure that he is not making illegal hits, there is a powder on the dummies that will show where the hits are being made. After a run of the drill, Alexei and his coach will go around and check the location of his hits, so he can make adjustments within the next run. Sadly, Petrikov's hit numbers haven't gone up much since he started this regimen, but he is planning on keeping up with it. Hopefully Petrikov's numbers will improve over the season and he will become more of a multifaceted player.

There were some minor changes made to Creller during the offseason. The biggest change came from putting himself into more of a center role, upping his faceoffs to 15. Most of the changes came to the panthers as a whole, mostly adding the large amounts of banked TPE they had. With some minor style changes to our gameplay, I hope to see it translate well into the season. So far its a similar start as last with an average showing, hopefully progressing into some momentum in midseason and finishing strong at the end. FHM is still a new sim so its hard to predict where you might be as everyone uses different lines and tactics, so a team you were storng against last season may not be the same caliber in S54. Creller will still be a shit player this season, but hopefully the Panthers did enough to win a cup and end the drought

I was asked by my GM and coaches to get a little bit more physical in my two way play. They said this will help me get in deeper on the puck in the offensive and defensive areas to help get the picks out to the scoring players. This will also help in the neutral zone too, which will help Jmac move people off the puck and create more steaks. As a player I would love to score more in my last season in the J, but also I want my team to succeed so by helping them it should transition into my player doing well! So, I will prepare in the off season by hitting the weights to beef up and get stronger. I will also be practicing my shots from ALL over the ice too! Will continue to work on my defensive game and bonding/meshing with my teammate, especially the new guys!

Player's perspective:

After getting called up, my SHL coaches had one main thing for me to work on, that was offense. I was a great defensive player, in fact just about the best in the league. In the SMJHL, it was easy to neglect my offense, because my lack of tools went a longer way. But in the pros it just wont cut it to be running around with base statistics. I had to immediately focus on getting those skills up to scratch.

I will be altering my on ice play this season because I'm being thrown into a very different role. Last season in the SMJHL I was a top player on my team, an award nominee for best defenseman and a serious minutes eater. Now I will be a role player and penalty kill specialist. This means high paced shifts less of the time instead of conservative shifts a lot of the time. I am preparing for this by changing my routine by practicing my wind sprints instead of endurance skating.
