Ross Rickenbaum – Baltimore Sun

With the Platoon moving to Baltimore and finally bringing hockey back into our fine city for the first time since 1996 the Baltimore Sun sports section wanted to take a closer look at the Baltimore Platoon’s defensive group and get you up to speed on the newest guardians that call Baltimore home. In the interest of being fair and not throwing any biases onto our reader this list will be in alphabetical order.

Editor’s note: Sorry for the delay in the preview for our readers. The higher ups deemed some extra quarantine coverage more necessary than sports, what a bunch of dinks!

Kristaps Ball
TPE 972
The oldest man not only on the blue line but on the whole team. This Latvian d-man has been honing his craft since the 41st season of the SHL. Ball is entering the tail end of his career but don’t let that fool you. He is still a pretty good puck mover which is what he relies on to be effective on the ice. He can still read the game well enough that his loss of speed isn’t a huge liability. You will most likely see Ball get more starts in the offensive zone to take advantage of his puck moving prowess. So far this season in eight games Ball has put up 4 assists, good enough for 2nd most on the squad. Ball has gotten off to a pretty hot start so far this season so expect a bit of a cool down but we project that Ball will land somewhere in the 10 to 20 point range with 50 to 60 blocked shots and 80ish hits.

Nat Emerson
TPE 1578
The captain of your Baltimore Platoon. The big man from Boston with the C stands 6 foot 4 weighing in around 250 pounds. Emerson has based his career on being as sound defensively as he possibly can and to be physical all the time. Emerson is a top tier defender hitting the prime of his career right now and the buzz around the rink is that Emerson spent this past off season upping his offensive game to help out little more in the offensive zone. Emerson was just a hair short of being nominated for the Bojo Biscuit Award for the league’s best defensive defenseman. Expect Emerson to take the lion’s share of minutes on all situations along with his partner Geoff Moore. Unexpectedly, Emerson has the best defensive rating on the team so far this season. He has gotten to a bit of a sluggish start offensively given his improvements this offseason but we expect him to be in the high 20s low 30s for points and pushing 100 blocked shots and around 160 hits.

Delver Fudgeson
TPE 955
Fudgeson is one of the younger boys on the blue line in Baltimore. He can read the game offensively as well as most forwards in the league. That is not to say that he is lacking in the defensive zone. He is still adjusting to the SHL game but as of now his defensive outlook looks just fine. In another season or two we expect him to be a solid defender around the league. We project Fudgeson will be under the ten point mark on the season with around 50 shot blocks and under 20 hits.

Geoff Moore
TPE 1427
The other big man on the top pair. Moore was also just short of earning a nomination for the Bojo last year. A decision that many see as a serious snub given just how many shots Moore blocked last year. Moore is adept in both ends of the ice and from what we see of the scouting report this year is going to be in the running again for the Bojo along with the Stevens for best defenseman. Moore has been in the league for quite some time but doesn’t show any signs of slowing down any time soon. Expect to see Moore deployed in almost every situation, We project that Moore will be somewhere in the range of 30 points on the season with 120+ blocked shots and hits.

Sabo Tage
TPE 690
The youngest man on the blue line and team alike. Tage is still finding his game but is developing well given his quick jump from the SMJHL to the SHL. He is responsible in his own zone and relies on his solid basics to get the job done. We wouldn’t expect huge things out of the youngster this year but he will definitely be a bright spot in a few years once he grows into his body. We project Tage getting close to 10 points this year with over 40 hits and over 60 shots.

Jack Wilson
TPE 595
Another member of the youth movement on the backend. This fine Irish lad has been experience the SHL since season 50. He is another developing player that is growing into his frame in front of thousands of fans. He isn’t going to be dazzling anybody most likely but that isn’t what he is on the roster to do. His job is to go out there and in the time he gets go unnoticed. Being unnoticed as a young defender is equal to playing a solid game. We project Wilson will be below the ten point mark with just over 10 hits and 25 blocked shots.

That’s it on the back end. I look forward to getting you up to speed on the rest of the team as long as the Sun building isn’t burnt to the ground.
