I once won the casino completely by accident, with no intention of winning at all. It was just a risk I randomly took and it paid off immensely well. I don't even know how I won it. I just know that I won. In the end, would I do it again? I would have to say no. The risk for me is too great. I'd rather have a guaranteed income than risking it all to possibly never get it back. Did it help me? I would think so. I have over $50M now in the bank, though I was once even higher. If you're good with the casino, then by all means, risk it all to potentially win it all. However, if you're... less than good like I am, I would advise against it or obvious reasons. These remaining words are only here so that I have 150 words written.

I have not participated because I am lazy and also I never really had to because my money is fine with the jobs I have so I don't need anything more but also don't really have the room to be risking any of it because then I would need to write some media. But from the looks of it, it seems that the casino has been a good addition to the league with many people participating and trying to figure out the best way to get the most winnings every season. It is a cool way for people in the league to get money in a new and different way and it is helping people to get more interested in the happenings around the league. Maybe I will make some bets in the future because it seems like a good enjoyable time that some of my teammates love to engage in. But for now, I think it is better if I continue spectating these betting activities.

I have never used the casino before, mainly because I never have a fat enough bank roll to feel comfortable betting it in the casino. I live paycheck to paycheck in the SHL world and don't have the expendable income. This year I decided to finally take a shot though and threw down a million dollar bet. I think one of the positives of the casino (and honestly, gambling in the real world too) is that it gets you to pay attention to teams and games that you normally wouldn't have cared at all about. When you've got something riding on that game or team though, you're instantly invested in how they perform. If I bet the over or under on say Tampa Bay, I now will be checking the scores of their games along with my own team's scores. I think this gets a lot of people more deeply invested in the league where otherwise they might have only cared about how their own team performed.

To be honest, I have never participated in the casino. My knowledge of how it affects my own enjoyment of the league is unknown. As someone who sees the way it affects other users though, I can see that overall it is very successful. I really wouldn't say it affects any of the teams generally. I don't think any GMs or coaches sees that they are close to hitting the over or under and change their lines in a way that would guarantee they hit the bet. I feel like on a personal level though it has a huge affect on their enjoyment. It isn't a stretch to say that players only typically care about their own team's standing and their player's personal standing. With the casino, they care more broadly about the overall league. They care if the teams they bet on are going either good or bad depending on how they bet. This makes the casino a huge benefit.

Quote:[...] even if you haven't participated, how do you think the Casino has affected the league? Is there any bets you wish you did (or didn't) make? Any features you would want to add going forward? How has the Casino affected you, if at all?

There's one feature I think could be really cool:

Game betting.

I know, for example, that HFboards has a system where users can bet vbucks on the outcome of NHL games. Maybe that could be implemented, with SHL currency replacing vbucks as what you bet with. It would allow some streamlining of the casino service, and maybe leave people more invested in the outcomes of individual games.

As for bets I wish I didn't make...

I know a couple of seasons ago I had made a parlay bet that had two of the three conditions met, which in the end meant fuck all of course, due to the nature of parlays. To make matters worse, I spent most of the season thinking I'd bet on Hamilton over instead of New England over, so that when it came to the near-end of the SHL season and I expected to double check things with a smile, I realized my three million dollars were down the damn drain.

My own failed bets aside, I think it's a great feature of the SHL. It adds an extra dimension to off-season prep, especially for those of us that are meticulous and want to give ourselves the best chance of making our money back. I'd miss it if it went away, and I feel the same way about fantasy. I think the league needs more features like that: ones that have you paying attention to the games and league results beyond just seeing how your own player or team performed.

Here's to 1000 more seasons of the SHL, and the SHL casino. ■

To be completely transparent, I totally forgot that the casino was a thing until a couple of days ago when Zombiewolf said that he had made a lot of money off of it in the Kelowna LR. Got me a little firs up to possibly make some cash, but I've never been a huge risk guy so I think we'll have to have a little foray in there at the beginning of next season. I'm very happy that I didn't take the over on wins for Tampa this season, as it seems that I would've been completely out of my money. I don;t think that I've ever participated, but I think its a really cool tool for the league. It allows people too lazy to write media or create graphics (AKA myself) to make some decent cash, so I really think its existence will serve me well next season lads.

The casino has consistently been a four million dollar drain on my bank account, as I foolishly fall prey to the appeal of gambling every season in spite of telling myself each time not to do it again. But I can’t help but to parlay and like clockwork sim randomness ensures that I pick the wrong way on at least one the best. I wish I didn’t make any of the bets, I’ve probably lost 20 million at least on the casino, but at least I have enough of a bank account to be able to swallow such a staggering loss. In spite of my poor luck, I find the casino to have been quite a fun distraction and activity for the league. In the offseason when there is little to do but mock drafts and predictions it is nice to have something else to think about. Being able to take risks and venture into the unknown, that is the appeal of the casino. For anyone who has a big bank account or likes gambling, it gives you something to do with all that SHL cash.

I'll say right now that I have never used the casino, and probably never will. I'm already short on cash and it seems fairly difficult to stay up on funds unless you hold numerous jobs, or you have a large contract. From the first day I joined Simulation Hockey League I have been grinding for my money and it seems difficult to keep my head above water at times. Saying all of that I wish I could make bets on unders for the Toronto and Tampa these last couple of years. Moving to the new simulation engine I'm not sure anyone thought it would be this difficult for teams to have success with such bad teams. Sure, they would be bad but this is historic levels of losing that hasn't been seen. It has set the precedent for what it truly means to to "tank". I almost wish there was some free casino option for players without a lot of money so that we could get interested more in it. Right now I'll probably never bother to try and lose the little amount of money that I have.

The casino has been a fun little extra that just continues to add more depth to this league. Its fun to try and make money, because the economy on here is miserable, literally any other way than writing one million words a season to keep up at the top end of everything. So its a great way to bet all your money and probably lose it, or make grum fix it for your team, yay buffalo. Seriously tho grum has too much integrity to do this and has brought the casino to a full fledged great project. I do like betting head to head with people and it would be interesting to see if this could get implemented somehow or having the casino head actually winning money from this too as grum only gets the job paycheck and its pennies in comparison to what he could actually win. grum sucks tho .-.

The casino is a cool feature but tbh i don't really use it that much because if i want money i want it now - i think another constructive way to use the casino feature would be to have a 'pro line' game night every so often (maybe once a week?).

Basically, have odds for single game matchups for one day - one game per team and allow us to place bets on one, two all the way up to five games - obviously this will work like the regular casino, except it's expedited because you won't have to wait until the next season to get your money. Here's an example of a line:

Carolina (1.35) vs Maine (4.25)

betting on Maine would quadruple your money if they win - but obviously, that'd be a very risky bet so you wouldn't be so inclined to make the bet. I think it would be cool if we could do this - even put a minimum 2 game parlay if the betting odds may be too easy. So that you need to get 2 games correctly to get any money.

I think that the casino is a strong feature that helps the league activity grow thanks to its easy functionality, its ability to create interest in other teams and a nice money generator if you're correct enough of the time! The league profits a ton out of the activity that is created by the casino, more and more people are going to tune into the sim as they use the casino, because betting on a team, even if you dont care about it, now provides a personal stake. The only change I would make to Casino is extending the over/under system to players. Essentially, the same way you bet on wins for teams, to allow an option to bet on hits, points, shots, the whole 9 yards for your select player. Of course, you can't do this for every player, which is the issue with the logistics, but it probably wouldn't be too hard to find a way to maybe do some rookies, the top players, maybe host a vote.

The addition of the SHL casino has been in win in my mind since it started. It is a very entertaining sidebar to the season, which adds just a like more to the season in opinion. It provides a different avenue for someone to make (or lose) money in the SHL other than media or getting a job. Which is something I always prefer, as I am too lazy to get a job and my media mostly consists of drinking with slappy and spewing bullshit. Granted I might be seeing this through rose-colored glasses as I have winning record in the casino, which I am sure, relates to my glowing view of the casino. For those of you that have a poor winning record and are fed up with the casino I am sorry that the casino has been unkind but you need to look at your betting before just getting angry at the system.
