Game 3 - St. Louis @ Kelowna
#1

St. Louis Scarecrows (0-3-0) vs Kelowna Knights (1-1-0)

Game Link

The story coming into this early season matchup was the offense, or a lack there of. Neither team had been lighting the lamp frequently, however with this being Kelowna’s third game, and St. Louis’ fourth, it is a bit presumptive to put a spotlight on the goal scoring. But a lack of goals can’t be ignored, Kelowna had 4 goals through two games which is ok for early season play, while St. Louis also had 4, though they had played three games prior to this matchup. With neither team scoring many goals the spotlight would be turned onto the netminders of tonights matchup, Cillian Kavanagh and Richard Majors. Both teams starters are winless thus far and are averaging around 3 GAA (Kavanagh with 3.00 flat, and Majors with 3.52). In what is looking to be a tight game, pressure is on the tendies to hold down the fort and give their respective teams a chance to win

Period 1:
After allowing 5 goals the previous game the St. Louis team as a whole needs to be better defensively--but an early slashing minor by rookie skater Pavel Kharlamov immediately puts them behind in their search for a win, especially when the call comes before even giving Majors a chance to face a shot! The powerplay yields results immediately as top centre Rocco Berni takes a shot right off the hop which is saved by Majors, but a juicy rebound is laid right back onto Berni’s stick, and in the penalty killers frenzy to stop the dangerous C from putting it in, they miss the other C, the captain and top winger, Adam Scianna swing down to the side of the net for an easy tap-in off the feed from Berni.

Score update: 1-0 KEL

Period 2:
The second period is much of the same story for St. Louis. Following a Cody Spinka hooking incident right at the end of the 1st, they are starting the game down a man. They cannot catch a break with rookies getting their hands in sticks. The St. Louis PK starts out strong, forcing the powerplay into their own zone where LaForest ices the puck, but Kelowna wins the ensuing draw over to Takshak, who finds Devin Williams streaking down the ice past the St. Louis D for a breakaway chance. The D-man stares down Majors--shoulder fakes to his left, but oh no he’s going right! Majors slides over, staying square to the puck carrier as he’s running out of room. At the last second the puck slips between the d-man’s legs and up over the shoulder of Majors. Mid-cheddar between the legs for Williams as he gives Kelowna a two goal lead!

Another goal against barely a minute in can’t feel good for the Scarecrow, but primary assist getter Simon Takshak took a run at Mega Tron and ended up going knee on knee with him. With a rage in their stomachs after the hit the Scarecrow look to take control on the powerplay, but can’t muster any meaningful offense past Kavanagh. Barely a shift after their powerplay is over there is commotion in the St. Louis end. Off of a quick faceoff draw Kelowna winger Justin Keahi has it at the point and drives a slapper at Majors. Unfortunately for Keahi, the puck careens off the boards instead and comes to Underton, who sauces it well above the raised sticks of the Kelowna defenders to fellow rookie Juli Schneider. The five foot four winger breaks in alone on the perfect Kavanagh, though she opts to not deke and puts low, hard shot on net from the hash marks. The clapper is perfectly placed as Kavanagh can’t get down soon enough to keep it out, and Schneider collects her first goal of the season on the old school breakaway-slapshot-five-hole special.

Score update: 2-1 KEL

Period 3:
St. Louis’ powerplay hasn’t been effective in it’s one chance today, but in the third they’re looking for a spark. A potential flare comes in the form of a James Hagan hooking call that gives them the extra man, but similar to their first opportunity nothing comes to fruition. The rookies keep up piling up the penalty minutes, and unfortunately for Kelowna they’re the ones on the receiving end of the whistle. Following the kill of rookie Hagan’s penalty, Kelowna and St. Louis return to a back and forth match. The now dominant second-line of St. Louis is out there and Grapefruit Lizard is trying to break in alone but gets hooked by Chris Goodname to stop the potential tying goal. All in all good decision making to try and stop a goal against, especially with St. Louis’ aversion to scoring powerplay goals. A minute into the powerplay, and once again, no offence. A missed pass on an attempted breakout by St. Louis ends up with Darzins and Nystrom giving chase, as Nystrom picks it up and dumps it into the Scarecrow zone. Takshak has a leg up on the defender to make a play for the puck, but as he slows up behind the net to take the dump-in, Colin Lambert accelerates just enough to get a stick lift and collect the puck for a quick breakout pass on the play to Kriss Darzins, who has snuck behind the opposing D once again. Darzins is known for his scoring ability, so Kavanagh needs to be prepared for anything here. He fakes like he’s going to his back hand, but curls the puck back around for a quick snapshot, placed at the perfect height to where Kavanagh can’t get a pad, or glove on it. Tie game off the powerplay goal!

Score update 2-2 TIE

Shootout:
Spoiler alert; nothing happens in OT. Sorry, but someone had to say it. First shooter is Rotticus Scott for Kelowna. He stick handles deftly, and when Majors bites on one of his moves he has an easy tap in to take the SO lead. Following up Scott is Danny Marston for the ‘crows. He doesn’t try anything special here, he skates in and rips one top shelf. No chance for Kavanagh there. Now with a clean slate we have Jaska Seppala for the Knights. Taking from inspiration from Marston, Seppala opts to shoot, but Majors is ready and fights it off with a strong stick covering the five-hole.

With a chance to take the lead, Kriss Darzins skates in. After scoring the game tying goal off a quick shot off the rush, Kavanagh knows he can’t be beat twice in the same spot by the same shooter. Darzins works it in, barely stick handling as he skates in on Kavanagh. He winds up for a shot, but only flexes the stick as he works the puck over to his backhand. Kavanagh’s already down and slides to his left to face the potential shot, but Darzins pulls it back over to his forehand and cuts his blades into the ice, leaving Kavanagh in the dust. He goes lay the puck in softly, but Kavanagh ranges back with his glove hand, full extension on the play…

And…

GOAL!

Kavanagh is too late as Darzins slips it just under the catching mitt of the netminder and gives the Scarecrows a chance to clinch the game with a strong play from Majors. His challenger is Ethan Duncan. Duncan collects the puck at centre with speed, digging his edges in as he weaves towards Majors. He threatens the shot, but curls over to the back hand without a real fake. Majors is unfazed and shuffles to follow the puck. Duncan pulls it back over to his forehand and drives to the far side of the net, dropping the puck off after some moves in tight to attempt the “Forsberg” goal. It doesn’t work as Majors sticks the pad out to secure the victory for St. Louis.

Final Score: STL 3 - 2 KEL

En-route to their first win of the year, Richard Majors stood tall for 29 shots, saving 27 of them, as well as saving 2 more in the shootout. Kavanagh had the same stat line, stopping 27 of 29, allowing 2 goals on 2 shots in the shootout. The game was extremely even through all counting stats aside from hits. The same penalty minutes for each team, teh same giveaways, and only 6 more faceoffs won for Kelowna. The hits, as I said, were lopsided for Kelowna who played a physical style to wear their opponents down but ended up being scored on late, and weren't able to get past Majors for nearly 45 minutes of play.

3 STARS:
1- John Amsel - 1 assist
2- Rocco Berni - 1 assist
3- Juli Schneider - 1 goal

The Underdog

Entering tonights game Kelowna is 4-1-1, and the hottest team in the league, while their opponent the St. Louis Scarecrows are 2-5. There is no doubt about it, the Crows are going to be in for a very tough game tonight. The young St. Louis team has faced early-season struggles with the loss of veterns on their team, relying on a strong draft class to take the next step. However, many scouts don't expect this team to turn around until someone takes charge, and shows some leadership for the rest of the team to follow. Will the young Crows team be able to show us something this season, that we haven't seen yet against the top dogs in the SMJHL?

One Shot

After three periods of play, and a game that saw each team take 3 penalties totalling 6 minutes each, it was ultimate one shot that made the difference. The third period saw one goal, from Kriss Darzins which saw the Crows tie the game at 2-2, a huge momentum swing for the Crows. With each team battling the third period would end in a 2-2 tie. Overtime would come and go, without much action or events happening for either team, so that meant only one thing, a shootout. This shootout would only require 5 shooters, the first round would open up with both teams scoring on their first shot. The second round would see only Kriss Darzin, score once again for the Crows. Into the third round, the Knights would need to score, however Ethan Duncan would be stopped, and the young Crows would pick up the win. The shots this game were 29-29.

3 Stars

Tonight's third star from the St. Louis Scarecrows, Julie Schnieder! Julie had a great two game tonight for the crows, which even saw her pick up the first up her first goal of the season for the crows, and open the scoring to make the game 2-1, and once again in reach!

Tonights second star from the Kelown Knights, Rocco Berni! Rocco would waste no time tonight setting up Adam Scianna for the first goal of the game! It would be his second assist on the year, and man it was a beauty. A great move at the blue line to beat the defender and drive the play, before dropping it off for a quick wrister from Scianna.

Your first star of the night is John Amsel! Man, what can you say about John tonight, he was all over the ice! Picking up an assist on Julies first goal of the season, being a physical force in the corners, and just driving play whenever his line was on the ice. Great game tonight.

Comment 1:

Party Starter

Adam Scianna scored the games first goal at 1:22 of the first period on a Power Play. It was assisted by Rocco Berni. The hometown Kelowna fans were on their feet very early and the atmosphere was great. St. Louis Scarecrows player Pavel Kharlamov took a Slashing 2 minute minor at 1:17 of the game to lead to the goal. How to Adam Scianna do the rest of the game after starting the party? Well he finished with just the 1 goal and was -1 on the night. He had 3 more shots on net including 2 missed shots. He had 4 hits and 3 blocked shots while playing 25:57. Really an all around great game by the left defenseman.

Comment 2:

Little Minute Men

Who played the least amount for both teams? Well on the loser Knights we see Big Drincc finished with only 6:31 off ice time all at even strength. He had 9 shifts and didn't manage to make another dent on the scorecard as he had 0 shots, hits, pims, points, you name it he didn't do it. He finished with a 52 Game Rating.
On the winning Scarecrows we see Right Winger John Amsel with 7:54 of ice time. It was also all even strength but he did manage to make a mark! He had an assist on Juli Schneider's goal which was the first of the game for St. Louis to get them going. He was +1 and lost 1 faceoff.

Comment 3:

Shootout Stars

This tight battle went to a shootout! We saw 3 goals out of 5 shots as the goalies got beat badly in this one. It all starts off with Rotticus Scott for the Knights, he went in with a sweet move and roofed it for a 1-0 Kelowna lead! Great start for the Knights. Danny Marston for St. Louis was up next. Can he tie it up? Well he did with a fucking rocket past the ear of the Knights goalie to tie it up 1-1 in the shootout. After a shot missed the net by Kelowna's Jaska Seppala we saw the Scarecrows send over Darzins to take a shot. He made 3 sweet moves and backhanded it 5-hole to take a 2-1 lead. It was all down to the Knights Ethan Duncan for the tie. Can he score to keep this baby going? NOOOOO he shoots it high glove but wide and the hero of the shootout is Kriss Darzins with the winner. Great job by St Louis goalie Richard Majors.

Is Kelowna OK?

Looking at Kelowna’s 1-1-1 record after the first three games of the season it seems fair to ask ourselves if the defending champions of the West have taken a step back this season. So far they’ve lost to a Kraken team that didn’t even krak(en) 20 wins last season, barely squeaked by a Whalers team that finished tied for dead last in the SMJHL, and gone to a shootout against St. Louis after they started 0-3.  While all of these signs point to doom and gloom in Kelowna I think they’ll be just fine.  Their rookie defensive pairing of Teddy Park and Chris Goodname is showing a lot of promise and the Knights will turn this thing around on the strength of that young defense.

Words 126

Battle through to the end

This game was as close as you can get through 3 periods and OT needing a shootout to pick a winner. Both teams ended the game with 29 shots, 6 penalty minutes, and seven giveaways, and those are only the statistical categories they tied in almost all the others are dead even as well.  Both teams entered today’s game hoping to get on track after less than thrilling starts to the season and both teams left disappointed.  Sure St. Louis got their first win of the season, but with the game so close there isn’t much to build on moving forward and Kelowna has to be upset they squandered a 2-goal lead roughly halfway through the third.  This was just one of those games where both teams fought hard and both teams left disappointed.

Words 135

Rookie Mistake

Kelowna looked well on their way to a gritty 2-1 win over St. Louis halfway through the third and then Chris Goodname happened.  Goodname took an ill-advised hooking penalty that saw the Scarecrows score on the ensuing powerplay to tie things up.  Goodname of course was the Knights’ top draft pick in the S54 draft and entered the locker room with a ton of potential and expectations to match.  I’m sure he’s upset with himself for making such a clear mistake and that as he gets more experience in the SMJHL these types of mental errors will be removed from his game, but today I hope he went into the locker room after the game and apologized for giving the game away.

Three Stars of the Game Analysis
1. John Amsel
I'm sure many, including myself, were surprised when Amsel was awarded the first star for this game. Only playing 8 shifts, with just under 8 minutes of ice time and losing the only Faceoff he participated in, Amsel's presence was only felt when he assisted Juli Schnieder in the first goal for St. Loius.  Tied for the third-lowest overall game rating would suggest to most that he not be given any of the stars in this game, but FHM will forever be a mystery in its calculations for awarding stars.

2. Rocco Berni
If stars were awarded purely based on stats, it would be safe to assume that Bernie would be awarded one for his performance this game, with an assist, a blocked shot, a takeaway, and solid performances on both ends of the ice.

3. Juli Schneider
Schnieder helped make this game interesting again by bringing the Scarecropws back within one not long into the second period and setting up her teammate Kriss Darzins to score the game-tying goal and sending the game to a shootout. With only 12 minutes of ice time on 10 shifts, Juli made her presence know by keeping the Scarecrows in the game, even though they ended up loosing.

Comment Two (106 Words)
Knights Bully Strawmen
The Knights put on a show for the home crowd at Prospera Place, making sure the Scarecrows went home feeling like straw-filled punching bags by putting out 32 hits in a single game. The biggest hitters were Left Defenseman Adam Scianna, Right Defenseman Luciano Vessot, and Right Wing Rotticuuus Scott, who all laid out 4 hits apiece. The Knights made sure to keep it relatively clean however, and only took six PIM. Simon Takshak, who had 3 hits, took a Kneeing penalty, and Chris Goodname, who had one hit, had a Hooking penalty, but other than that, the Knights played an extremely physical but clean game.

Comment Three (171 Words)
Early Preview of the Finals?
These two teams have been playing extremely well lately, but as we look back at this game, we can see that this was not always the case. After this game, St. Louis was 4-7 and wasn't looking as strong as they were hoping. Kelowna, on the other hand, was 8-1-1 after this shoot out loss, with their only other loss coming in a very close game vs the Carolina Kraken (who themselves are looking pretty good this year). Since this game, St. Louis has gone on a tear, at one point having a nine-game winning streak to put them at second in the division behind only the powerhouse of Newfoundland. They have a tough road in the playoffs if they hope to face the Knights in the finals. Kelowna, if they can keep up their winning ways, are looking to be atop the Western Conference blender at seasons end and at this point in the season, are looking like the favorite to be the West's representative in the 4 Star Cup.

Comment 1: Interview with Knights GM @Katth

1. It was a really tough loss for Kelowna. How did you feel after this loss?
Katth: I don't think it was a tough loss. Sure it sucks to lose at home, but St. Louis is not a bad team. Game was pretty even.

2. Kelowna had much more hits than St. Louis in this game. Does Kelowna like playing aggressively
Katth: We like to play a physical game and it's brought us great success so far.

3. Kelowna was leading 2-0 in this match. Why you weren't able to hold this lead?
Katth: Bad penalties. When playing physical you risk taking a penalty or two, but the hooking penalty was completely unnecessary.

Comment 2: Interview with Scarecrow's GM @Capt_Blitzkrieg

1. Winning in shootout is always great. How did St. Louis celebrate this win?

Capt_Blitzkrieg: We typically celebrate by going out to dinner, and then extending team curfew a couple of hours. Usually that's spent playing video games on whatever console anybody brings along.
The Kelowna game was no exception, but I don't think too many of us made it to the extended curfew time. Shootouts are always tiring.

2. Scarecrows were 2-0 down in this match but managed to come back. What did you say to motivate your team?
Capt_Blitzkrieg: In situations like that, we talk about what's going right and what's going wrong. With that game in particular, we just needed to take a deep breath and keep our heads up.
From there, to give due credit, Schneider put one on the board for the first time, and Darzins caught fire and got us that game-tying goal in the 3rd and brought us home in the SO.

3. Kelowna had much more hits in this game. Why St. Louis allowed Kelowna to play so aggressively?
Capt_Blitzkrieg: We were a little surprised out of the gate at the hitting difference but it wasn't completely unexpected since that was a question mark for the season. A lot of the difference comes from having a younger, less physical team right now.

(220 words)

Comment 3: Interview with Knights' GM @Naosu

1. It was a really tough loss for Kelowna. How did you feel after this loss?
Naosu: It was a very disappointing loss. We had chances to win in overtime and couldn't finish the job. In the end we were lucky to get a point out of it.
2. Kelowna had much more hits than St. Louis in this game. Does Kelowna like playing aggressively?
Naosu: We try to play a tighter, more physical game. Our players fight hard in the corners and are encouraged to take any hits that won't take them out of position.
3. Kelowna was leading 2-0 in this match. Why you weren't able to hold this lead?
Naosu: Unfortunately they were able to convert on a late powerplay to tie it up. Our PK wasn't able to shut them down when it mattered the most.

Comment 1: Goalie watch

This early into the season, there hasn't been a great deal of excitement for the Crows, and with a 1-5 record it is little wonder. The offense hasn't been there as much when needed, and the defense has been letting up a fair amount of shots at this point. the goaltending has been above-average so far at least, and that's where Richard majors comes in. after letting in 7 goals in his first 2 starts, Majors has locked it down, earning his first win last week and improving his stats night by night. If the Scarecrows don't want to write off the season, they will need to start winning games, and while the offense is warming up and trying to click, Majors bears the brunt of the load.

- 138 words

Comment 2: A duel for the ages.

With many team stats in the game coming out almost identical (Giveaways, penalties, and shots were all tied when the game ended, and the only major variations were hits and faceoffs, in Kelowna's favour), it came down to the goalies, as predicted. Both Richard Majors and Cillian Kavanagh stopped 27 out of the 29 shots faced after 3 periods and an overtime, and the shootout ended up being the deciding factor. Kavanagh had been doing well up to this point, and Majors had been polishing his game as well, and this game each proved that they would be a key difference maker in thier team's success.

- 114 words

Comment 3: The shootout

This was each team's first game to come to a shootout this season, so there was no prior record to go off of. Rotticus Scott took first shot, and earned the first goal of the shootout for the Knights, beating Majors stick side. Majors would close the door after that, however, and both Jaska Seppala and Ethan Duncan were turned away in later rounds. That would be all the Scarecrows needed, as it turns out, with the Crows shooters going 2-for-2 on shootout attempts, getting goals by Danny Marston and Kriss Darzins, with the Latvian's being the game-winner.

Primetime Game
This game had the feeling of a primetime game. Kelowna look liked they had the game in hand leading 2-0 early in the 2nd period. But the Scarecrows were up for a fight. St.Louis scored about 5 minutes into the 2nd and then again with about 7 minutes left in the game to tie it up. They went the distance in overtime and the game had to be decided in a shootout. That stat lines for each team were almost identical. Each team had 29 shots, 6 PIMs, 7 Giveaways. Slight advantage to the Knights on Hits and faceoffs. But overall what a game.

Future Star
Colin Lambert is a rookie defenseman who went 7th overall to the St.Louis Scarecrows. In this game Lamert was everywhere recording an assist, 4 shots on goal in over 23 minutes of ice time. Lambet has an impressive 67 offensive game rating, 70 defensive game rating an an overall rating of 71 which is impressive for a young defenseman. The young defenseman is proving he is a top guy playing big minutes for a solid team. Lambert is definitely a front runner for the Rookie of the Year Award and is the future of the St.Louis Scarecrows blue line. Watch out for Lambert.

Fairly Even
This game between the Kelowna Knights and the St.Louis Scarecrows was fairly even. While the score ended in a 3-2 Scarecrows win, many of the statistics show the game was close. Both Kelowna and St.Louis record 29 shots on goal, both had 6 penalty minutes and both had 7 giveaways. The Kelowna Knights out hit the Scarecrows 32 to 14 but the Knights gave away the puck a total of 7 times compared to the Scarecrows 3. In terms of faceoffs, the Knights won that department with 33 wins compared to the Scarecrows 27 wins. This was an extremely even game that is reflected on both score line and in the statistics.

Danny Marston was St.Louis’s first shooter taking his first career attempt. Marston came down the middle, and attempted and quickly switched to the forehand, to beat Kavanagh to tie the Shootout at 1-1.
Jaska Seppala was next for Kelowna and is 2 of 3 in his career. Seppala came down the left side, and tried to fool Majors with a quick snapper but was denied. 1-1 Still.
Kriss Darzins was next for St.Louis whose 0 for 1 in his career, He puts on a nifty move on Kavanagh, who tried to make a desperation save, but was not desperate enough as Darzins scored to make it 2-1 St.Louis.
Ethan Duncan was up to save the game for the Knights with his first ever shootout attempt. Duncan came down the right side, and tried to flip to his backhand on Majors, but was denied. St.Louis wins the Shootout 2-1 and the Game 3-2!

Comment #1: The first couple games before this one the teams did not score in the first period, but in this game one minute into the game Adam Scianna puts it past the struggling Scarecrows goalie. A great assist from Rocco Berni, it was Rocco’s second assist on the year, and Adam Scianna’s first goal of the year. The goal came on a Power Play where literally 5 seconds before the goal Pavel Kharlamov got a two minute penalty for slashing. After the goal in the first minute and half, it was quite for goals in the first period. But a huge penalty to end the first period would cost the Scarecrows to be down a man going into the second period.                    Comment #2: The Knights has a power play to start the second period, the last minute penalty in the first period when Cody Spinka got a penalty for hooking. The St. Louis Scarecrows bonehead penalty in the first period cost them a goal just 37 seconds into the second period. Devin Williams first goal on the year was a beautiful set up by Simon Takshak to give the Knights of Kelowna a 2-0 lead. The Scarecrows of St. Louis answered back with a goal of their own 5 minutes later. It  was a beautiful set up for Juli Schneider from John Amsel to put the Scarecrows back into the game now being down 2-1.                                                            Comment #3: It was a fun period to watch. The Scarecrows tried their hardest to get that game tied up shot after shot the Knights goalie was standing on his head for this period. When finally the Knights got a bonehead penalty in the 11 minute mark of the third period. Chris Goodname was called 2 minutes for hooking! A minute later around the 12 minute mark, the Scarecrows tied the game 2-2, the crowd was silenced after Kriss Darzins put it past the Knights goalie after Colin Lambert gave him a perfect opportunity to score and make it a 2-2 game going to going into OT. Nothing happened in OT, it was the shootout that got interesting. Both teams score their first shootout chances, and well that was Kelowna’s only goal in shootout, they go on to miss the next two shots. St. Louis scored both chances. St. Louis won 2-1 in Penalty Shootout.

Our third game of the season starts off with a bang with a goal and a penalty less than a minute and a half into the game! A penalty is given out to Pavel Kharlamov of the St. Louis Scarecrows for slashing, and just seconds after, Adam Scianna gets our first goal of the evening for the Kelowna Knights. He was assisted by Rocco Berni, one of the Knights centers, who happens to one of our stars featured tonight. This intense first period really sets the stage for the rest of the game, setting up for an even more intense finale.

Hot Start - 119 words

Some fans were still just getting to their seats by the time the Kelowna Knights had scored their first goal.  The Knights were swift in putting the first points on the board, only taking 1 minute and 22 seconds to light the lamp and get the game started.  It was on the back of a Slashing Penalty by Scarecrow Pavel Kharlamov, the Kelowna Power Play unit only needed 5 seconds of the advantage to put the puck at the back of the net.  The faceoff was won by Rocco Berni and Adam Scianna instantly took a shot and it was able to make it past Richard Majors to put the Knights up to an early 1 to 0 lead.

Even Shot at Victory - 103 words

Don’t let St. Louis’ 0-3-0 record coming into this game fool you, they were not put off by the Knight’s early points and they kept the game close enough through the 60 minutes of regular time to be able to tie the game with 7 minutes and 37 seconds left on a power play of their own to take it to extra time.  Through regulation, the Shots on Goal were pretty even at 29 to 27 in favor of St. Louis, with Kelowna adding 2 Shots on Goal in Overtime to make the ending Shots on Goal exactly tied at 29 a side.

Big Shootout - 197 words

This would be the second instance of a game going to a shootout in the first weeks of the season.  Only the Carolina Kraken and Maine Timber Game from just 3 days prior needed more than the 5 minutes of Overtime to decide a winner.  This shootout was dominated by first time career shootout appearances by a majority of the skaters.  This didn’t deter most of them though, as both Rotticus Scott and Danny Marston started both of their team’s shootout with a goal.  After a big save by Richard Majors from a rocket of a slap shot by Jaska Seppala, Kriss Darzins put a whole lot of pressure on the last Knight shooter by getting a goal of his own and bringing the tally to 2 to 1.  The Knights sent out first timer Ethan Duncan, another career first timer, who took the puck in and made a great deke to his backhand, where it looked like he had an open net just waiting for him, but Majors was able to react and get his stick in the way of the shot at the last second to give the Scarecrows their first win of the season.

Who will break the drought?

In tonights matchup both netminders are winless this season and hoping to break the slump that they find themselves in. Cillian Cavanagh and Richard Major for the Kelowna Knights and St. Louis Scarecrows respectively are sitting at a 3.00 GAA and 3.52 GAA so a high scoring game is expected seeing as how things have been going thus far this season. Kavanagh is expected to win this game for the Kellowna Knights quite easily however with the resent performance from both teams it could shape up to be a much closer game than anticipated. I expect a high scoring game where Kelowna wins it 6-5.

Big Mistakes, Late Game Heroics

Leading in the late minutes of the third period Kelowna was up 2-1 against the St. Louis Scarecrows and at this point in the game it honestly felt like all hope was lost for the Scarecrows. With a lot of penalties being awarded throughout the game Kelowna rookie Hagan made a huge mistake in the closing minutes of the third giving St. Louis the man advantage. By this point the Scarecrows have had multiple powerplays that led to nothing however Darzins came out flying in the final minutes and pulled a highlight reel move , by deking through the Kelowna defenders and putting one in on Kavanagh. The Hero of the game, Darzins, Big Mistake: Hagan

The Hero of the Shootout

The shootout, probably the worst way to start a game but we will take a look at who the hero of the shootout was. Was it a single player or a group of them? Well the shootout itself both goalies seemed to struggle early which I guess was expected seeing their records going into this game. Darzins puts the puck on net and scores on Kavanagh leaving the rest up to Majors who was having a great game thus far. To no ones expectation Major became superman and challenges the shooter Ethan Duncan and

The Queen of Snipe:
Sitting atop the rookie goal-scoring throne this season is none other than the Queen of Snipe herself, Juli Schneider. This game she exploded on the scene, ripping her first goal of the season. Her confidence must have grown after this game. Following her first-goal performance, Juli would go on to lead the entire SMJHL rookie class in goals. Juli was a steal of a draft pick for the Scarecrows, coming into the team in the sixth round at the 56th overall spot. The native of Berlin, Germany comes into St. Louis with low expectations but drastically proved that she could stick with the best of the rookies in the SMJHL. She will look to round out her game and improve upon her offensive skills throughout her rookie season. Where will she go from here? Will SHL GMs take notice? Can anyone dethrone the Queen of Snipe?

Tendy Duel
Anytime a game goes to a shootout, the real stars of the show is the last line of defense. You can’t win games without a good goalie, and both of these teams are proof of that. Richard Majors, the 6-foot second-year goalie standing tall for the city of St. Louis, has spent a good majority of the season sharing the net with rookie Nicolae Antonescu. In order to prove himself as the definitive starter for the crows this season, he had to have a good showing in this game and break the team out of their losing funk. On the other end of the ice, Ireland native, Cillian Kavanagh has less to prove for the Knights. The six-foot-four goaltender has been a mainstay on the club for two seasons. Kavanagh bears more pressure on his shoulders, as there are high expectations for the Knights this season. Ultimately the Crows came out on top. Majors had a solid game and a good defensive performance in front of him allowed him to remain confident and poised throughout the game.

Three Stars
3. Juli Schneider- The queen of snipe herself had a big showing in this game, scoring her first goal of the season and her career. The goal arguably caused a momentum-swing in the game, coming in to tie the game before going into the third period.

2. Rocco Berni- Berni has been a immensely important veteran player for the Knights this season. He is among the best and most consistent offensive players in the SMJHL right now. He set up a huge goal that set the tone for much of the first and second period.

3. John Amsel- The Irish representative of the Scarecrows has been working hard to prove himself as a rookie on the very young St. Louis lineup. He did a tremendous job as he set up a crucial goal in the second period to assist Juli on her first of the year.

COMMENT 1: Three Stars (128 words)

First Star: John Amsel
Despite only being on the ice for eight minutes, John Amsel made the most of his opportunities by assisting on teammate, Juli Schnieder’s, goal and being a presence on the ice. Despite Amsel’s solid performance many critics believe the first star was not well deserved.

Second Star: Rocco Berni
Rocco Berni was able to be a good teammate on both sides of the ice by blocking shots and causing turnovers on one end, and assisting on a goal on the other side.

Third Star: Juli Schnieder
Juli Schnieder continues her terrific rookie campaign in the SMJHL by adding another goal late in the game for the Scarecrows. The german product has shown that she belongs in the SMJHL by leading all rookies in goals.

COMMENT 2: Interesting Shootout (111 words)
With both teams appearing in their first shootout of the season it was assured it would be an interesting one. To start it off, Rotticus Scott pulled off an excellent move to give the Kelowna Knights the first goal in the shootout. This was quickly answered by the Scarecrows when Danny Marston fired a forehand shot past Cillian Kavanagh. In the second round, Majors makes an excellent save against Jaska Sappella and Kriss Darzins puts another puck behind Kavanagh to take the lead for the scarecrows. Then with the game on the line, Ethan Duncan isn’t able to beat Majors and the St. Louis Scarecrows take it in a shootout thriller.

COMMENT 3: Dynamic Start (111 words)
After an early, unneeded slashing penalty from Pavel Kharlamov of the Scarecrows; the Kelowna Knights made no mistake in taking up this golden opportunity. Within a minute and twenty two seconds of the game's puck drop, Adam Scianna lit the lamp and gave the Kelowna Knights an early 1-0 lead. Making this power play goal even more impressive, it was only five seconds into the penalty when Rocco Berni placed the puck on a tee for Adam Scianna to wind up and put it past Richard Majors. With this dynamic start, Kelowna came jumping out of the gate’s and ready to maintain their pace all the way through the overtime period.
