Game 3 - St. Louis @ Kelowna
#16

Comment One: Upset Alert
Despite Kelowna sitting on top of the league right now, the St. Louis Scarecrows did not seem fazed at all. They came out hard and played their game and were able to force the game into OT and eventually win in OT. The Scarecrows were sitting at just 1-5 coming in with the Knights at 4-1 yet the Scarecrows did not back down and were able to come away with two points. is this just another example of any given day, or are the Scarecrows ready to make a move up the standings? Are the Knights beginning a decent? These questions will be answered as the season moves on.
[109 words]

Comment Two: Evenly matched
This game was played very evenly across the board. A 29-29 draw in shots. Each team took 3 minor penalties. Each team turned the puck over 7 times. With these two teams so playing so evenly it is no wonder that regulation was not enough for this game. The Knight and Scarecrows were forced into a shootout. It is almost a surprise that the game ended after just 3 rounds of a shootout. But keeping with the even game to this point, the two teams were tied after the second round of the shootout. And to properly finish the game, they split the top two stars.

Comment Three: Goalies NOT Stars?
How did neither goalie get a star in the game? Each goalie had to make 28 saves on 29 shots a .956 save percentage. This is not a knock on the play of Amsel, Berni, and Schneider who all played good games. However, for neither of these goalies to get the recognition as one of the three stars of the game seems crazy. Who ever is in charge seems to have overlooked the last line of defense in this game. Each goalie also made a save in the shootout to keep this game going. A decision like this will make the three star stat lose its credibility.

Special Teams (126 Words)

Tonight, was a big night for special teams. Both of the Knights goals came on the powerplay, while the Scarecrows scored 1 of their own in the third to tie the game up at 2 a piece. With just 1 even strength goal, it really showed how detrimental taking penalties can be, and the huge affect that having good special teams can have. Moving forward, the Scarecrows definitely have to work on there penalty kill, as they were just 33% on the night. Meanwhile, the Knights powerplay was lights out, but with no goals scored on even strength, they have to be careful moving forward. You can’t rely on another team taking penalties, so if their 5-on-5 game doesn’t improve, they could have some bad results.

Hero Night for Darzins (105 Words)

Despite being robbed of being one of the 3 stars of the game, Kriss Darzins had a fantastic night for the Scarecrows. He scored his second goal of the season, which would be the game tying goal, on the powerplay halfway through the third period, which would send the game into overtime, and then later, he scored the game winner in the shootout. He was the reason the Scarecrows got back in this game and would go on to win it. This type of performance is what the Scarecrows are going to need from him moving forward, as he is one of their top players.

Scarecrows pull of the upset (114 Words)

Coming into this game, the Scarecrows had just 2 wins in 7 games. Meanwhile, the Knights had picked up points in all but 1 game so far this season. Suffice to say, the Knights were the heavy favorites. So, for the Scarecrows to get a point here meant it was a good game, but to finish it off in the shootout, and get the win, was insane. Even more impressive, the Knights had 32 hits, to St.Louis’ 14. This indicates that the Scarecrows were actually the ones who dominated possession throughout the game. That, along with scoring the only even strength goal, shows that they were the better team here, in this tight game.

Comment 1 - Player of the Game

Player of the Game, a tale as old as time. A prestigious award we hand out every game to the player who displayed exceptional skill in both hockey and math. Tonight, in a fierce matchup between the Knights and Scarecrows, we hand out this award to this man. This man? yes. None other than Juli Schneider. Juli man wow what a performance. You scored a goal. And for that, you are the player of the game. Remeber Juli, the hunter is now becoming the hunted. You have a target on your back now. Celebrate today yes, but tomorrow? tomorrow you get back to work to be the best player you can be.

Comment 2 - 3 Stars of the Game

And now on to my favourite part of the post game show comments, the 3 stars of the game! I get great joy writing these out 5 times. so on to the 3 stars!

3rd Star - Rocco Berni. Rocco! Love to see Rocco make this list. Such a good guy and pillar in his community on in Kelowna. The guy was born and raised in Kelowna and plays for his home fans. they love him there and he loves them back. Rocco got an assits this game which is good enough to make this list.

2nd Star - ay ay ay John amsel baby. This winger plays for st louis. And let me tell you, he had himself a game. He put up 1, yes thats right, 1 assits and no goals. 2nd star of the game. Nuff said.

1st Star - Bingo, Juli Schneider is your 1st star of the game. Way to go Juli.

Comment 3 - Turning Point of the Game

Turning Point of the game, I get great joy picking out the turning point of the game. Hockey is a game of ups and downs, lefts and rights. To pick one turning point is a hard, but its a job I take very seriously and pride in. Tonights turning point? Kriss Darzins, never heard of him? Well neither have I, until now that is. Late into the 3rd period, the scarecrows were down a goal. And here comes Mr Darzins. He shits the puck so hard the goalie had no chance at seeing it let alone stopping it with his pad or glove, idk where he shot it lol. This goal proved crucial with the Scarecrows going on to win the game in a shootout. good job darzins.

C1
Underrated Performance
For tonight's game, our underrated performance was from Kriss Darzins. It honestly comes as a surprise to me that Kriss was not able to snag a star in tonight game, because while goals do not mean anything, the two they scored were the most important of the game. Only one will show on the scoresheet, and that was his goal midway through the third period to tie the game 2-2, which ended up forcing overtime. You may ask, where did their second goal come from? That one that had turned into the winner in shootout, as he was the second shooter for the Scarecrows that was able to put one in. He was a hero twice for the Scarecrows this game as they grab the 3-2 win in shootout.

The Three Stars

Your third star tonight.. from the St. Louis Scarecrows.. Juli Schneider! The 56th overall draft pick was able to score her first goal of her career this game, and it was an important one! Having gone down 2-0 after Devin Williams' goal, the Scarecrows needed something, and Schneider delivered. She gave St. Louis the fighting chance they needed, and it paid off big in their win.
Your second star tonight.. from the Kelowna Knights.. Rocco Berni! Berni had a strong game, which started from his assist on the first goal of the game to set the Knights up 1-0. He was a solid player all over the ice tonight, and helped set the tone his team needed to follow.
And now your first star tonight.. from the St. Louis Scarecrows.. John Amsel! The man that set Juli Schneider up for her goal, helping to force overtime with a tie game. In my opinion, an interesting pick for the first star, but with his limited number of shifts he made a big impact.

And We Have Ourselves a Shootout!
The game eased into overtime, and eased straight into the shootout as well. A few chances from either team, but no goals to show for it means we move on. Kelowna gets the first shot, and we are underway! It starts off very exciting, with Rotticus Scott managing to put the puck in for the Knights, and Danny Marston matching that for the Scarecrows. Up next is none other than Jaska Seppula, and although he got a strong shot off, he just couldn't get it past the goalie. Up next is Kriss Darzins, and he makes no mistake on his attempt, giving the Scarecrows a scary advantage as Ethan Duncan skates up. And you know the drill, if he makes it, we continue. We didn't continue.

Comment 1: Physical Dominance
In this contest between two teams, the St. Louis Scarecrows and the Kelowna Knights, there is a clear winner when it comes to the physical presence of this game. On one side we have the St. Louis Scarecrows with 14 hits, and on the other side we have the Kelowna Knights with a whopping 32 hits. So as you can see the Knights have over double the hits of the Scarecrows. In most cases the team that plays the most physical dominant usually ends up winning the game, but in this case it ended up not being the case as they did end up losing this game.
(105 words)

Comment 2: Even Balanced Matchup
As indicated by the score this was a very close matchup between these two teams. If we look at the game stats, you can see that shots with both teams having 29, PIMs with both teams having a total of 6, giveaways with both teams having 7, and lastly even though they aren't tied I still think its significant that Kelowna had 27 faceoff wins and St louis having 33 face off wins. With the game ending in 3 to 2 in St Louis' favor and ending in not regulation time, not overtime, but a shootout it really shows how this game could have gone either way.
(108 words)

Comment 3: A Shootout Finish
As I previously stated this was a very close game and you can see this again my the finish of the game. This game was tied at the end of regulation, and no team scored in overtime either leading to a shootout. With the first shooter we have Rotticus Scott and he managed to light the lamp for Kelowna. To follow up Danny Marston for St Louis scored to even things up. After that we had Jaska Seppala for Kelowna, and unfortunately there had to be a first miss and he did it. Next we have Kriss Danzins who scored the second consecutive goal for St Louis and also applied pressure for Kelowna to score. Lastly we have Ethan Duncan for Kelowna who failed to score and that ended the game.

Victory in the Shootout
This is a game that the Kelwona Knights are going to want back. They went up 2-0 with 2 quick goals to start the 1st and 2nd periods, but after that they seemed to let their feet off the gas and saw the St. Louis Scarecrows tie the game with tallies in the 2nd and 3rd periods. OT was a bit lack luster with neither team able to light the lamp. The shootout was a nail biter with both goalies letting in the first shots they saw. On the 3rd shot of the shoot out Majors was able to stop a 5 hole attempt from Kelwona's Seppala. Right after that shot, St. Louis forward Darzins was able to put one in right under the glove of Kavanaugh giving the Scarecrows a one goal advantage. Majors came through again with a big stop and was able to secure his first win of the season.

Knight's fall flat
In what was expected to be a statement game for the Kelwona Knights, they ended up being matched every step of the way during this game. The only areas they really seemed to excel in were hits, recording 32 against the Scarecrow's 14. Kelwona was able to strip the puck away tonight 7 times, but to what avail? They also gave the puck up 7 times, allowing St. Louis to take 29 shots on goal, putting in 2 past the net minder. Kelwona came into this game with 9 points and wanted to prove to their home crowd that they're here to compete for the long haul this year, and while the fans earned some free hockey tonight, they ultimately saw their home team fall in the shoot out to a goalie who had something of his own to prove.

Crow's Turning Point?
Coming into this game as the under dogs, the St. Louis Scarecrows were only able to win 2 of the first 7 games this year, recording a measly 4 points. After finishing 2nd in the East last year, they are looking for ways to get this year's campaign going. They didn't let the 32 hits against them deter their drive and desperation for a big win against the first place Knights. Coming up big in the later half of the game, they scored two unanswered goals to put the game into overtime and the eventual shootout, where their goalie had by far his biggest game of the year. Will this be the start of the Scarecrow's path to the playoffs? They've put themselves in a big hole and they're going to need showings like this every game to put themselves back in the race for the Four Star Cup.

Comment 1 - Upset

If this game was any indication, the St. Louis Scarecrows were still trying to fight their way in this new era of SMJHL Hockey, taking down the favorited Kelowna Knights in the shootout. The Knights took advantage of the situation early on but eventually fell under their weight by the end of the 2nd Period when Cody Spinka netted the goal that would spark the flame for the Scarecrows, who went on to tie it by the middle of the period. By this point, St. Louis was matching Kelowna's pace, leading to an increased physical game from Kelowna. After the 1st overtime period, the shootout turned decisive for St. Louis with the go ahead goal by Kriss Darzins.

Comment 2 - Kelowna Lookback: The Shootout

The Shootout between the two teams was short and sweet, to say the least. For Kelowna, they had no way to match up to St. Louis. A lot of that blame has to go to the physical game they played during the later periods and overtime, as it was obvious they were trying to wear the Scarecrows down more and more. However, it had the opposite effect, as shown by Duncan's failed attempt. As he was approaching Majors, he had trouble getting a good stride, with decent puck work. He was seen huffing quite a bit afterward, showing signs of exhaustion as he was approaching the bench compared to Darzins who managed to get back to the bench fairly well.

Comment 3- The Crystal Ball

In short, this game served two purposes: firstly, it was a statement from the St. Louis Scarecrows that they were still looking to compete with the best, even if the team's glory days were behind them a bit. Secondly, it was a wake-up call for the Kelowna Knights, who, despite having one of the most talented rosters in the league, lost to a team that had difficulty finding their footing. Both teams continued to take these lessons to heart (even though Kelowna lost to the Vancouver Whalers in what should have been a decidedly easy game), as the Kelowna Knights are favorites for the President's Trophy, while the Scarecrows are looking to still be competetive through this last stretch, even though their overall performace has been middle of the pack.

Comment 1: Mirrored goalies (140 words)
A very strange occurrence happened in this game. Both goalies faced the same amount of shots, and had the same amount of saves. Richard Majors of the St. Louis Scarecrows and Cillian Kavanagh of the Kelowna Knights both had really solid play throughout the game, with Richard and his Scarecrows winning out in the end. Despite the same stats, and despite Majors winning out in the shootout, Kavanagh still posted the higher Goalie Rating. 73 to 67. It was evident that Kavanagh had tougher shots to face. He is seen as one of the leagues top tier goaltenders, or even the best. This game was a mediocre one, but he still showcased a lot of what was to come for him this season. On the other end, Majors has shared time with Antonescu during the season, doing pretty well.

Comment 2: Stats won't tell you the whole story (155 words)
How often do you see a RW with 5 faceoffs taken, 7 shots on goal, 1 goal, 0 blocked shots, 2 giveaways and yet... still posting a DGR of 86 with an OGR of a measly 63? Well, Kriss Darzins did today. His immense defensive performance could not at all be showcased in stats. But if you watched the game, you'd understand why he got that high. Kriss was playing like a man possessed in his own end, stealing pucks, play with such intensity in every situation. He even went out and won 2 faceoffs! He played over 5 minutes of powerplay throughout the game, while also being on the ice for 2m30s shorthanded. Most on the team. Sometimes you flip through the stats of a game and think to yourself: "He had a bad game." But watching Kriss play, I don't think anyone can criticize him after today. Maybe his shooting, but who's counting?

Comment 3: Ethan. Duncan. (148 words)
Ethan went -1 in this game. He had 0 points in this game. Yet once again, you can't always tell through stats when someone had a good game. If Kriss Darzins had a good game, Ethan Duncan had an incredible one. A defensive masterclass from the Kelowna centerman, stealing the puck away 3 times while maintaing a 63 FO% over almost 20 faceoffs, logging time in both shorthanded and powerplay, driving the play wherever he went. Some players aren't noticeable unless they score points, or block a ton of shots or make highlight reel saves. Some players aren't noticeable when they are doing everything right while being one of the best players on the ice. Ethan in this game falls into the latter category. An immense talent that hopefully sticks around for another season. For the trained hockey eye, he is one of the best in the league.

Comment 1: The Backbreaker

Kriss Darzins put this game away with under 8 minutes left in the third period. Powerplay goals are always killers and Kelowna gave up the worst possible goal at the worst possible time. the Latvian goalscorer put the puck in the back of the net with ease. The Knights, a team usually known for their poise and cool-headed play, let the Darzins slip behind the powerplay defenders and shred the back of the twine with a blistering shot. After the goal the Knights were hungry to even the game back up but Scarecrows goaltender Richard Majors stood on his head the remaining 8 minutes and shut down the Kelowna attack. A goal like this could easily set a team up for success moving forward. How will both teams respond? Stay tuned![url=https://simulationhockey.com/showthread.php?tid=103980][/url]

Comment 2: Even Steven

Most games will have a disparity in shots for one team. Tonight we had a very special game where we saw a back and forth game of tug of war with shots and goals. Both squads finished with 29 shots and had a plethora of chances. The difference tonight was the finish of Kriss Darzins but it easily could have gone either way. We see a game like this setting a couple of young teams up for a continued rivalry. Something more friendly than St. Louis and Detroit, but one of respect. Both the Kelowna Knights and St. Louis Scarecrows are legit contenders in the S54 season and it wouldn't surprise this reporter if they both saw the other in the finals in just a few months.

[127 Words]

Comment 3: In The Box

Yet again another even statistic showing that these two squads are pretty evenly matched. Both St. Louis and Kelowna finished with a total of 6 penalty minutes. The most egregious of the pnenalties going on the Knights Simon Takshak. Known for his offensive prowess and being one of the most talented young players in the SMJHL. Takshak went for the knee and could possibly be looking at a possible suspension with such a terrible shot at the Scarecrows defenseman. Soon after this hit we see St. Louis rookie Brandt Underton taking a roughing penalty as he went after the Kelowna star player Takshak. Sometimes justice doesn't come and Takshak was allowed to play while Underton served two minutes.

Comment 1: Interview with Jaska Seppala
Following Kelowna's 3-2 shootout loss to St. Louis, we caught up with Knights forward Jaska Seppala to get his thoughts.

1. A disappointing loss and you were held off the scoresheet - what does this team need to do to find its footing?
Seppala: It is disappointing to be held off the scoresheet. We worked hard in the offseason and I think we just need a few more games to jell together. I am confident with more games we will dominate the league especially me and my buddy's on the top line
2. You were unable to find the net in the shootout, is that a tough one to get over mentally?
Seppala: I never let not scoring in the shootout get to me. There is always next time. You know sometimes the goalie just reads you the whole way and there is not much you can do about it.

Comment 2: Lazy Penalty
It's a frustrating night for the Knights as they lose 3-2 in a shootout after holding a 2-0 lead earlier in the game. While it would be an exaggeration to suggest a single play cost the Knights the game, the penalty taken in the latter half of the third by Chris Goodname did his team no favours. Taking a hooking penalty on a lazy play, Goodname caused his team to go down shorthanded and facilitated the Scarecrows' power play goal which would tie the game and force overtime. The blame can't all be placed on Goodname as his team could've done more to get the win, but this team will need to improve its discipline if its going to succeed this season.
Code:
Words: 122

Comment 3: Impact Player
Your impact player of the game is St. Louis Scarecrows goaltender Richard Majors, who was as good as he needed to be in this one. In a game that saw four goals in regulation time, no skater on either side truly stood out as the difference maker. The goaltending battle in this one was hotly contested, with each goalie turning aside 27 of 29 shots they faced - good enough for a stellar .931 SV%. The difference maker in this one, though, was Majors steady performance in the shootout that would decide the game, as he denied not one but two of the Knights prolific scorers to earn the extra point for his team.

Tin Foil Hockey: Scripted League?

The game played out like a script from a Hollywood movie, if there ever was a case for assuming the league was scripted it was tonight. You have the best team in the west and arguably in the league with the Kelowna Knights who have shit down their opposition so far this year. Then you have the scarecrows who are not very good, a young team who can’t seem to find the back of the net if they had a map. Like classic Hollywood fashion the knights score two goals earlier in the game only for the Scarecrows to tie it in the third and win in the shootout. On paper this should have been a knights win and fans should wake up and pay more attention to the scripted league.
Code:
131 Words

One on One: Darzins vs Kavanagh

Like any great comeback this game had a great moment when on the power play the Scarecrows who in the second period were down 2-0 score to tie the game up. Darzins gets to play the hero tonight as he scores on a quick breakout from St Louis player Colin Lambert. Then after tying the game up he gets the chance in the shootout to play the hero, score and the scarecrows get their first win of the year. Like before he is one on one with the Knights goalie Kavanagh, this one like before Darzins is able to score on Kavanaga this time with a great deke that leaves the Kelowna goalie out of position.
Code:
116 words

Player of the Game: Richard Majors

My player of the game has to be Richard Majors, who stopped 27 of 29 in regulation and overtime and 2 of 2 in the shootout to get the Scarecrows first win of the season, while also posting a great .930%. The big reason for this is Majors deciding that after giving up two goals he had enough and wasn’t going to let anymore in. This was a big factor in the Scarecrow comeback, without that goaltending they could give up another goal and shift the momentum back to the knights who would have walked away with a win, making St Louis 0-4 on the season. It’s a shame he did not get a star in this game but you can’t always get it right.

The Real Three Stars
1st Star: Who was actually awarded? STL RW John Amsel (G: 0, A: 1)
Who should have been awarded? STL RW Kriss Darzins

This should have been rather clear. He was the one who tied the game in the third period (with a wicked shot btw!) and he also scored in the shootout. He also had 7 shots on goal, which is a huge chunk of the 29 shots the STL had altogether. Amsel had an okay game considering his role, but was it worthy of being the first star? No. Darzins, the hope of Latvian hockey, demonstrated that he is already a force in this league.
(107 words)

2nd Star: Who was actually awarded? KEL C Rocco Berni (G:0, A: 1)
Who should have been awarded? Rocco Berni is okay

However, I would’ve went with KEL C Ethan Duncan instead. Although Berni assisted Kelowna’s first goal, Duncan was better engaged in the game. He had 4 shot attempts, 2 hits and 3 takeaways. Duncan also was stron in the faceoff circle, winning 12 of 19 faceoffs. Duncan missing the deciding shootout probably took him away from the stars considerations. With what we have seen from Duncan early in the season, it looks like he might be ready to take a huge step from last season, where he only scored 2 goals and had 9 assists.
(117 words)

3rd star: Who was actually awarded? STL LW Juli Schneider (G: 1, A: 0)
Who should have been awarded? STL LD Colin Lambert

Colin Lambert, although being a rookie, plays like a proven vet already. He played more than 23 minutes, and got an assist on Darzin’s tying goal in the third period. Lambert also had 5 shot attempts, 4 of which were shots on goal. It was a great overall game from Lambert, and it should have been awarded. Juli Schneider, the third star, also had a solid game, but he played very sheltered minutes on even strength, playing only 7 mins, whereas he was on the ice for more than 5 minutes of powerplay.
