Hello everyone, and welcome to the recap of tonight’s game! In a packed night of SMJHL action, we’ll be looking at the showdown between the Anaheim Outlaws Outlaws and the Anchorage Armada Armada .

It was a cold night in Anchorage, Alaska (when is it not?), but the Outlaws were coming in hot, with a record of 5-2-0. Anaheim’s starting goalie, Strom Chamberlain, boasts a 5-0-0 record, with a miniscule 1.83 GAA on the season so far.

The Armada have struggled a bit into the season, currently posting a mediocre 2-3-1 record. Anchorage has made the bold position to start their backup, Sergei Potvinov in net tonight, sporting a 1-1-0 record.

These two teams faced each other last week in Anchorage, with the Outlaws squeaking out a 2-1 victory. With no need to travel, both teams were rested for this game and ready to go.

With one team coming in hot, and the other lukewarm, we expected another close game with a probable Anaheim victory. What we got instead was a statement game for the Armada, and a barn-burner at that.

1st period:
The first period started out like most games, relatively defensive-minded with some good scoring chances, but few goals. The only goal of period one came off of a quick face-off win in the Outlaw’s end, where Ryan Cvitkovich won it back to New Orleans Specters' S54 first-round selection Bork Lazer, who rifles one top-shelf on Chamberlain at a close range. After the first buzzer sounded, it looked like the game was shaping up to be another potential 2-1 nail-biter.

2nd period:
Period two is where things started to go off of the rails, with a whopping 5 goals between the two teams, including 4 goals in a span of 5:01. Following a dump-and-chase by Ethan Price, Rhys Pritchard won a couple of important puck battles to force one past Potvinov, tying the game at 1 apiece early in the first.

2;307;Pojo Biscuit and Ethan Price battle for the loose puck, with Ethan Price coming away with it.
2;310;Ethan Price with the shallow dump into the Anchorage zone.
2;310;Rhys Pritchard beats Pojo Biscuit to the puck and has it for Anaheim.
2;311;Rhys Pritchard is down low and puts it on goal from the outside!
2;311;It beats Sergei Potvinov! Rhys Pritchard with the goal!
2;311;It's goal number 2 this season.
2;311;He was assisted by Harry Walker (2) and Rikard Hammarberg (6).
2;311;The game is now tied at 1

Midway through the period, the defensive structures began to unravel. Taylor Gervais took advantage of a weak Bork Lazer shot, redirecting it past Chamberlain and giving the Armada the lead one again at the halfway mark of period 2. This was Gervais’ first goal of the season.

2;624;He tries to force it to Bork Lazer in the slot...
2;624;Bork Lazer can't take that pass...
2;624;Harry Walker is first to the puck, but Taylor Gervais rides him out and takes it.
2;625;Taylor Gervais redirects it on goal!
2;625;That's in, Taylor Gervais scores!
2;625;It's his first goal this season...
2;625;He was assisted by Bork Lazer (2) and Braden Lowrie (1).
2;625;Anchorage takes the one goal lead. The new score is 2 - 1.

Less than a minute later, fan favourite defenseman Bud Light Lime Bud Light Lime was sprung loose from an excellent up-ice pass by Rikard Hammarberg onto the breakaway. While not known for his scoring this season so far, Bud Light Lime made no mistake as he deked out Potvinov and slid in the puck on his backhand. There was much celebration on the Anaheim bench, as it was Bud Light Lime’s first goal of his SMJHL career, and the game had been tied at 2.

2;681;Ryu Jones sends the puck towards Rikard Hammarberg.
2;686;Rikard Hammarberg snaps the puck over to Bud Light Lime Bud Light Lime.
2;686;Nobody behind him as he breaks in...
2;686;Bud Light Lime Bud Light Lime with the deke ...
2;686;Bud Light Lime Bud Light Lime has done it, he scores!
2;686;It's his first goal this season...
2;686;He was assisted by Rikard Hammarberg (7) and Ryu Jones (2).
2;686;The game is now tied at 2

The celebration didn’t last long for Anaheim, as the home team took over the game from there. Just past the 15-minute mark of the 2nd period, Anchorage was putting on the pressure when Alexei Petrov gathered his own rebound and circled for a shot. Redirected not once, but twice, Chamberlain really had no chance on this one as it squeaked by the left side, marking a goal for Cvitkovich, his first goal of the season and second point this game. Immediately after the ensuing faceoff, Anchorage walked into the Anahiem zone for a quick cycle, with Cvitkovich battling for a loose puck and making the excellent pass to Cyril Vyskoc, who makes no mistake in burying it. It is Vyskoc’s first goal of the season, and Cvitkovich’s 3rd point of the game. In a span of twelve seconds, the Outlaws find themselves going from a 2-2 tie to a 4-2 deficit.

2;913;Alexei Petrikov snaps a one-timer!
2;913;Strom Chamberlain flashes the pads and makes the stop...
2;913;Alexei Petrikov has the rebound...

2;914;The shot tipped by Ryan Cvitkovich...
2;914;It beats Strom Chamberlain ... Ryan Cvitkovich scores!
2;914;It's his first goal this season...
2;914;He was assisted by Ulrik Bergstrom (3) and Alexei Petrikov (1).
2;914;Anchorage takes the one goal lead. The new score is 3 - 2.
2;914;And we'll have a faceoff.
2;917;Faceoff: Cyril Vyskoc and Hubert Andrews out for this faceoff. Won by Anchorage...
2;918;Alexei Petrikov...at the red line...
2;922;Puck played deep into the Outlaws end...
2;922;Ryan Cvitkovich rides James LeBlond off the puck, he has it for Anchorage.
2;925;Dished off to Cyril Vyskoc behind the net...
2;926;Cyril Vyskoc comes out from behind the net...With the shot...
2;926;It's in! Cyril Vyskoc scores!
2;926;It's his first goal this season...
2;926;He was assisted by Ryan Cvitkovich (2) and Thorbjorn Gunnarson (3).
2;926;Anchorage with a two goal lead now. The new score is 4 - 2.

Third Period:
The second period had dwindled to a close, and the third period resumed with some hope for the Outlaws. Their chances of getting back into the game, however, were dashed by an early goal by Chris de Siren, and his line only took things over from there. De Siren would add two more assists, with linemates Stan Hanson and Santtu Rasanen scoring the remaining goals before the halfway point of the third period. The seventh and final goal for the Armada led to Chamberlain eventually being pulled midway through the third, but the game would only wind down from there, as Anchorage took their foot off of the gas slightly with a commanding 7-2 lead. Backup goaltender Separa Borro did well in relief, stopping any shots that came their way.

When the final buzzer sounded to end the game, Anchorage has exacted vengeance for the close defeat days before, and with interest. The three stars of the game all came from the Amrada, with 1st star Cvitkovich (1-2-3), 2nd star Lazer (1-1-2), and 3rd star de Siren (1-2-3).

Chamber-laid down?

Coming in on the back end of two home matchups in a row against the same team Strom Chamberlain was expected to show up big for his home club. Game 1 of the matchup, a 2-1 shootout victory for the Outlaws, was the Strom show as he stopped 31 of 32 shots en-route to his 5th straight win. Tonight was a different story for the goaltender as he never completed the game. However, when he was pulled from the game the Armada were outshooting his team a whopping 40-20. While an .825 sv% is rarely welcome, this was a case where Chamberlain was not able to upkeep his great play for two games against the same team, and wasn't able to keep Anaheim in a game they had no right winning. For reference, if you take Strom's curretn .901 sv% he would have let in 7-8 goals across the two games where he faced 72 shots combined, which is in line with what actually happened.

While it may seem reasonable to look at a goalie who let in 7 goals as a cause for the loss, the team in front of Chamberlain was not up to task with the Armada, especially with only 3 goals in regulation across two games. This is not a game where the tendie was to blame, it was a case where he preformed as he should've but got no support from the team in front of him.

Clean as a Whistle

This game only had 3 penalties throughout the match, showing how a 5v5 matchup was greatly in favour of the Armada who scored all of their goals at even-strenght this evening. However, the timing of penalties, specifically in the 2nd, shows a big shift in momentum in this contest. Two minutes after Pritchard tied the game at 1, 5 minutes into the second, LeBlond got caught in the hands and was sent to the box for slashing. There was no scoring on the man-advantage, but in the minutes following the powerplay, Gervais found the back of the net. Though Anaheim responded to the challenge with a goal of their own, Anchorage still controlled play aggressively following the penalty, eventually getting goals 3 and 4 on the night. This lack of penalties taken by the home-team was a key part in their victory. It's no coincidence that an early goal was matched by Anaheim in the second as they had momentum swing in their favour following a late 1st period powerplay. The last powerplay of the game came with 6 minutes left and was a non-factor momentum wise as the 7-spot against Anaheim really impacted their ability to take advantage of the extra attacker.

Let's Get Physical/The Big Takeaway

Tensions were high to start this game as Anchorage came out in an attempt to avenge their starter following the 2-1 shootout loss. This can be seen with how physically dominant the Armada were throughout this game. They tallied 27 hits compared to Anaheim's 10. There's no doubt in my mind this set fear into the Outlaws as a physical battle entering the Anaheim zone preceded Vyscok's game winning tally. This fear and caution seeped into the rest of their game, as the Outlaws weren't careful watching their backs on the breakout. They got pick pocketed 6 times throughout the game, and clean gave the puck up 7 times. The physical play had worn down the opposition to the point of losing 13 chances with the puck. Possession was easy for Anchorage to come by, as not only did they gain a net advantage of 3 opportunities with their giveaways/takeaways, they also dominated in the faceoff circle, coming out with a 31-24 score in their favour. With the puck on their sticks to start plays so much, it's no surprise they reached the 50 shot plateau and were able to score 7 on the night.

On Fire
Coming into this game the Anaheim Outlaws were 5-1 for 10 points which was at the top of the Western Conference and likely near the top of the overall standings. This loss brings the Outlaws down to 5-2 which is still impressive and a very good start for what should be a really good team this season. Their veteran players should be good enough for the Outlaws to challenge the Kelowna Knights for Western Supremacy. Goaltender Chamerblain gives the Outlaws a chance to win every night and is a major reason why they are a top team in the league and will be a challenger for the Four Star Cup.

Turning Point
The 15 minute mark of the second period is the turning point of this game. The Outlaws and Armanda were tied 2-2 and the game was going back and forth. The Armanda began to turn it on, which led to Ryan Cvitkovich scoring at 15:13. The Outlaws were stunned and the Armanda came back at them after the ensuing faceoff and Cyrill Vyskoc popped one behind Chamerblain. The Armanda would go onto score 4 goals in the third period after going up 4-2 at the 15:25 minute mark of the second period. They never looked back as they dominated the Outlaws. They ended up finishing with 50 shots on goal in what turned out to be a 7-2 Armanda win. The Outlaws will go back and look at the film to see what exactly happened at the 15 minute mark of the second period of this game.

All Sails Go
The Armanda were certainly on fire offensively this game with 7 goals scored. Ryan Cvitkovich and Chris De Siren both has 3 spots, 1 goal and 2 assists respectively up front. On the blue line, Bork Lazer had the same 1 goal and 2 assists. The Armanda’s best players were certainly their best players in tonights game. This game also saw rookie Taylor Gervais score his first career SMJHL goal. Something that is even more impressive about this offensive showing is that all of their goals were scored at even strength which really reflects how well the Armanda were clicking in this game.

David and Goliath

The Anaheim Outlaws were coming into this one with an impressive 5-2-0 record to start the season versus a mediocre Anchorage Armada squad with a feeble 2-3-1 record. All the signs pointed to Anaheim winging this game easily but that is not what transpired out on the ice tonight. The Anchorage Armada retold the story of David and Goliath dismantling the Anaheim Outlaws 7-2. This was not a close claim, the weaker team on the season absolutely decimated the opposition tonight and this has got to have both Anaheim players and fans feeling pretty upset about the whole ordeal. (104 words).

Goalie Matchup

Coming into this game Anaheim Outlaws net minder Strom Chamberlain boasted a 5-0-0 record with a 1.83 GAA which even at this point in the season is quite impressive and a testament to the Anaheim Outlaws skill. The Anchorage Armada started Segei Potvinov who coming into the game sported a 1-1-0 record. All signs pointed to Strom having another strong showing versus the weaker Armada side this game but the game on the ice told another story. Both goalies were head to head part way through the second when everything fell apart for Strom as he let in two goals that put Anchorage up 4-2. This led to Strom being pulled in the third as he let in another couple of quick goals while Potvinov continue to shut the door to Anaheim. This goalie battle was close through 1 and a half periods but Potvinov takes it in this matchup. (156 words)

Defensive woes

All momentum was lost for Anaheim when they scored their second goal to tie up the game. This normally should not have happen but after multiple defensive lapses and blunders the Anaheim Outlaws were unable to use any of the momementum they may have established and blew it all away when the puck was brought into their own zone. The turning point of the game occured when Anchorage put up their 3rd goal of the night and this all came as a result of the Outlaws defensive strategy. While Strom Chamberlain was being peppered with shots the defense was nowhere to be found and Anchorage took full advantage getting rebound after rebound until finally potting a goal. This became the tale of the tape all night and ultimately led to the runaway score that Anchorage was able to accumulate. (139 words)
