PSG Game #2 - Detroit Falcons Vs. Maine Timber
#1
(This post was last modified: 06-10-2020, 01:57 PM by TheSparkyDee.)

Game 6 of the season and it’s been a great start for the defending the champions The Detroit Falcons travel to the top of the East Coast of the Country to face off against the Maine Timber. Detroit and Maine faced off just two days prior to this game. Maine won 4-2. A dominate win from Maine where they scored 3 of their 4 goals in the first period. Detroit coming off the loss from Maine was ready to avenge what happened a few days ago. I am The Sparky Dee your host and, welcome to The Post Game Show...

We are going to go and look at each periods and what happened!

1st Period: The first period was quiet for goals, Detroit fans that traveled to Maine with the team were relived to see no goals on the board after one period in the books. Detroit Falcons out shot the Maine Timber on by a few shots 10 to 7. The Falcons came out in the first half of the period shooting the puck well and passing it well. Maine looked like they were on the defense a lot in the period. The goalies were the featured players in the first period.

2nd Period: The second period for the Maine Timber was a hot start. They put 6 shots on the Falcons goalie Thor Odinson in matter of 3 minutes. Six minutes have gone by and finally Detroit has a chance to get one on the board, Jack Kanoff got a great pass from Burlok Sulfurgold after Luke McMasters faceoff win. Kanoff passes to McMasters in front and he puts it past Leo Bloomfield for the first goal of the night. A few minutes go by and Maine answers with a goal from the blue line. Kyle Sutton slaps shot it past Thor. 1-1 game through 2 periods of play. Detroit had 15 shots against Maine’s 9 shots, bringing the total to 25-16. Detroit had many chances to shut the door on this game in the 2nd but failed to do so.

3rd Period: The third period was an exciting period to watch. 11 minutes into the third, Frederick Wanesly lasered a pass to JMac NCheese from center ice, the puck bounced off JMac’s stick he rushed to grab it and passed it to Reid Sutherland in the high slot, he fired quickly right past Leo Bloomfield. The period was winding down and with 6 minutes left, and Zoltan had the puck in front of the net, but the Maine defender knocked him off the puck where Edward Williams came up with the puck after outworking a Maine defender, and shot the puck it was deflected in front and Magnus Liljestrom passed back back to Edward and he slams it right past Leo Bloomfield, he had no chance to save it. The game ended at 3-1 Detroit Falcons. Shots 32-21 Detroit.

Thank you for watching the Post Game Show I am The Sparky Dee... have a great day!

Comment One
Three Stars of the Game Analysis

1: Magnus Liljestrom
Liljestrom not only had an Assist and a Takeaway but finished with the best +/- in the game. Pair that with the best overall and defensive game rating on his team, the most shifts, and the third most TOI, it's not hard to see why he earned the first star of this game for Detroit.

2: Kyle Sutton
Sutton has the most well-rounded showing for the Timber in this close game, being the only player to have both Offensive and Defensive game rating over 60. While some of his teammates had outstanding Defensive games (three ratings at or above 93), their offensive showing wasn't noteworthy. Paired with Maine's only goal of the game, it's understandable why Sutton was given the second star.

3: Luke McMaster
Tied for the second-highest overall game rating (71) and the highest Offensive game rating (71), McMasters one goal and four blocked shots on only 18 shifts were enough to earn him star number three. A solid defensive showing helped make sure that his name wasn't left out when talking about standout players in this game.

Comment Two
Yelling Timber

Detroit came to Portland with a chip on their shoulder after losing their previous game to Maine. While they played well and ended up felling the Timber, I'm sure they were looking for a more dominant showing. After their incredible run last season, Detroit has slowed their play and scoring by a significant margin. Maine has been sieve-like when it comes to allowing shots on goal this season, and Detroit hasn't yet looked like their championship-winning selves. It could be either an early-season slump or just an off season for the Falcons, but either way, they were able to overcome their struggles and get a win in Maine.

Comment Three
The Trees Hit Hard
When most people think about teams that hit hard, it's not often their first thought is of the Maine Timber. It would be understandable to think of Friedland in Carolina, and Williams in Detroit, but the Timber may have started to gather more attention in this area when they laid out an astounding 23 hits in a single game against Detroit (compared to the Falcons 6 total hits). Kyle Sutton, who took the second star of the game, had 4, Sondergard and O'McGuiness had 3 apiece, and five Maine players had 2. Who's to say if the focus on hits contributed to the loss, but we can see that the hits were all clean, as the only one with any penalty minutes was Patrick Shepard, who didn't have any hits. If the Timber can keep this up, other teams better watch out for their physicals health before and especially after games against the Timber.

The Detroit PIMS?

Detroit won this game 3 to 1, but man did they rack up the penalty minutes recording 16 penalty minutes in this game. Of these 16 penalty minutes, 14 of them came in the third period, luckily after they took a 3-1 lead in the game. Looking deeper into these penalty minutes I guess we shouldn't be too hard on the whole Detroit team, as one player wins tonight's award for the goon of the game. That award goes to Joseph Fantobeans who racked up 12 of the teams 16 penalty minutes, which included a 10 minute major with 5 minutes left in the game. Luckily for Detroit Maine could not convert on any of their powerplays. Fast fact, Jack Kanoff recorded the 4 penalty minutes for Detroit.

Maine Lays the body

Maine may have not won this game, but they did win the physicality battel, as they were laying hits like no tomorrow tonight. Through three periods of play tonight, the detroit Falcons put up 6 hits all night, yes just 6 hits. Of those 6 hits, one player would have five of them. That one player was Edward Williams, so he was doing his part. However, the Maine Timber would combine for 23 hits tonight, and will have definitely left some bruises on the Detroit players. Although, is this a perfect example of Detroit controlling the game so much, that they rarely had to hit anyone? Whereas Maine was chasing the play so much, and never had that puck that hitting was the only way of letting out their frustrations? It sure looks that way folks.

Three Stars

Tonight's third star from the Detroit Falcons, Luke McMaster! Luke had 1 goal tonight, opening the scoring 6 minutes and 36 seconds into the game for his third goal this season. Luke would finish the game by adding 3 shots, and 4 blocked shots.

Tonights second start from your Maine Timber, Kyle Sutton! Sutton had the only go for the Timber, which was his first of the season. Unfortunately despite his line, the rest of the timber simply weren't competitive in tonight's game.

For the games first star, from the Detroit Falcons Magnus Liljestrom! Magnus had a great game on defence, logging over 21 minutes of ice time and picking up an assist! Magnus added 2 shots on goal, 1 blocked shot and finished tonight plus 3! Just a great performance!

Comment 1:

Party Starter

Luke McMaster scored his 3rd goal of the year for Detroit at 6:38 of the 2nd period after a dull first that went scoreless. It was an even strength goal assisted by Jack Kanoff and Burlok Sulfurgold. It's always important to strike first in hockey and tonight was no different. McMaster put his team up early and they went on to win 3-1. McMaster finished with the 1 goal, was +2 and had 3 shots. He also had 4 blocked shots. He played 17:42 and finished with a great 71 game rating. He did a great job killing penalties as well as he spent over 3 minutes shorthanded. He had a tough night in the faceoff circle going 6-8.

Comment 2:

Small Minute Men

For Detroit the winners we see rookie Biggs Secksy with 7:14 of icetime. He had 1 shot on goal but no points. He also missed 1 shot in his 8 total shifts on the nice. All his time was at even strength and although he didn't stand out, he didn't cost his team either. He finished with a solid 55 game rating as a rookie. On the Maine side we see center Bob Poppinfresh with 9:54 of all even strength time. He went 5-5 for a respectable 50% rate. He had 1 shot on net but did go -1 on the night as his line was out there for an even strength goal against. He finished the game with a 52 Game Rating and was solid for a rookie.

Comment 3:

Bad Boy

The Bad Boy of the night was Detroit Falcons Joseph Fantobens. The left defenseman played 18:34 on the night but was thrown out of the game with 4:25 left in the 3rd period. He slashed a forward on the Timber so bad we saw blood all over the ice and the training staff had to rush onto the ice. Fantobens was given the minor and the 10 minute misconduct as he was kicked out of the game. He finished with 12 PIMS to go with his 51 game rating. He was -1 on the night and 1 shot and 1 giveaway. Overall it wasn't a great night for him but he was strong killing penalties as he did played 2:08 shorthanded for the Falcons.

Keeping the Puck Going

After winning the championship in S53 Detroit doesn’t seem to have skipped a beat and is continuing their domination starting the season going 3-1 right out of the gate most recently beating the Maine Timber oddly enough… 3-1.  This was a classic game for the Falcons, they were able to play their high skill low physicality game and while the game was tied after the first 2 periods they stuck to the game plan and midway through the third Reid Sutherland scored the eventual game winner with Edward Williams chipping an insurance goal in 3 minutes later.  None of this is surprising and really the only question anyone can ask right now is if anyone can stop the Falcons from repeating last season’s success.

Words 125

Punishing the Powerhouse

Maine obviously isn’t happy with the end result of today’s game, but they have to at least feel good about the punishment they dealt out to the defending champions. The Timber was all over the Falcons in the hit department delivering 23 to Detroit’s 6.  I wouldn’t be surprised to find out tomorrow that the Falcons training staff asked to borrow a couple extra ice baths for their players after taking a beating like that.  As a fan of old school physical hockey, it certainly put a smile on my face to see such a thorough beatdown in that facet of the game.  Now Maine needs to direct their efforts to getting pucks on net.  At the end of the day all those hits mean nothing if they don’t win games.

Words 132

Oh no what is you doing?

I have no idea what Joseph Fantobens was thinking with that slash in the third period that sent him to the locker room early.  It was a selfish play and as of this writing he still has yet to say anything about it after the team declined to make him available for interview during the post-game presser.  This will certainly be a storyline to follow over the next few days as the head office decides upon extra punishment.  Everyone had better circle November 6 on their calendars for the next matchup between these two teams for any potential fireworks.

Detroit dominate possession (106 Words)

With 32 shots, to the Timber’s 21, Detroit got a well-earned victory here. Along with the shot totals, another tell-tale sign of Detroit dominating possession, is the Timber recording 23 hits, compared to the Falcons 6. When you’ve got control on the game like the Falcons did here, it will often yield positive results, and that’s a big reason why the Falcons were 4-2 heading into tonight. To do this to a team like the Timber, who were 4-3 coming into the game, is very impressive, and shows that the Falcons are the real deal, and likely to be one of the top teams this season.

Fantobens Is Out Of Control (125 Words)

Detroit’s Joseph Fantobens had a relatively quiet night, up until the end of the game. With 5 minutes left in the 3rd, Fantobens took action. With Patrick Shepard taking an unsportmanlike penalty earlier in the period, one can only assume that it triggered something for Fantobens, and what he was about to do was an act of revenge. With both hands on his stick, Fantobens delivered an absolutely ridiculous 2 hander to a Timber player, which would result a 2-minute penalty and a game misconduct. While he awaits further punishment, it could yet result in a suspension. Then again, worse has gone unpunished, so we’ll have to wait and see. Detroit needs to get their players under control, as this kind of behavior is unacceptable.

3-Stars (138 Words):

1st Star: Magnus Liljestrom
Liljestrom recorded 1 assist on the night and put in a good defensive performance. A key contributor on the blueline for the Falcons, if he can continue to deliver these kind of performances, the team should excel.

2nd Star: Kyle Sutton
Perhaps the lone bright spot of the Timber’s on the night, Sutton scored their only goal. It was his first of the season, and Timber fans can only hope that’s it’s the first of many, as Sutton is capable of a lot more then what he has shown so far this season.

3rd Star: Luke McMaster
McMaster has been one of the Falcons best players so far this season, and he scored his 3rd of the season tonight, to open up the scoring. It was a big goal to give the Falcons the early edge, and is the type of thing that Falcons fans are starting to grow accustomed too.

Comment 1: A chance at redemption

Last time these two teams faced each other was only last week, with Maine taking away a vital 4-2 win, doubling up the Falcons in a game that proved how Maine is not to be taken as lightly as it was last year. A stauncher roster with growing players is bolstered by another large crop of rookies, and the rebuilding Maine are set to hopefully keep the wins coming. Currently at 4-2-0 on the season, Maine is hoping to right the ship, and find a chance at postseason glory. Detroit, last season's S53 4-Star Cup Champions, are looking for a bounce back win, as they still seem to be keeping a good pace in the standings out of the gate, but want to keep momentum. A 3-2-0 record so far is good, but can be so easily erased in the early weeks of the season.

- 158 words

Comment 2: A personal chance at redemption

It was a rough night for Falcons backup Thor Odinson last week, letting in three quick goals in the first and being pulled a little over halfway through the period. In his first start of the season, Odinson left the ice with a whopping 58.06 GAA, and letting in 3 goals on 5 shots led to a save % of 40.0. Odinson got only his second start of the season tonight, and it is no coincidence that it is against the team that chased him last week. Falcons management wanted to see his mental fortitude, and give the Norwegian a chance to prove himself under pressure. Odinson would prove he was more than worthy of the second chance, stopping 20 of 21 shots from the Timbers to earn his team the 3-1 win.

- 144 words

Comment 3: All Quiet on the First Period Front

Unlike the last game between these two teams, where Maine had taken a 3-0 lead before the first period had ended, there was a tight defensive mindset early on. Teams struggled to get the puck past the other team's systems, and were very diligent and responsible in breaking up plays. Not only were there no goals, but there were no penalties called on either team in the first. It would take until the second period for the scoring to begin, with a goal by Luke Mcmaster at 6:38 into the second to break the ice, followed less than two minutes later in a response from Maine, with the tying goal coming from the stick of Luke Sutton.

Night of Firsts
This game between the Detroit Falcons and the Maine Timber includes a lot of firsts. For the Falcons Reid Sutherland and Edward Williams scored their first goals of Season 54. Frederick Wanesly and Cal Labovitch recorded their firsts assists of the season in the Falcons win. For Maine, Kyle Sutton scored his first goal of the season and the only goal for the Timber in the loss. Interestingly, second overall pick in the S54 SMJHL Draft Rikard Bjerg recorded his first career SMJHL assist. Bjerg is an impressive defenseman who is coming into this season with some hype. Bjerg will look to build on his first career assist with many more to come hopefully.

Quality Killing
The Detroit Falcons racked up a total of 16 penalty minutes with Jospeh Fantobens getting a 10 minute misconduct late in the third period. The Falcons managed to kill off all their penalties in this game. Maine recorded 4 penalty minutes and managed to kill off all of those too. It is rare for penalty killing units to kill off all their penalties especially early in the season, but for both Detroit and Maine their penalty killing units were perfect, but on the other hand, Maine should be kicking themselves for not taking advantage of Detroit on the power play. Maine could have won this game if it were not for the quality killing for the Falcons.

Starting off Well
The Detroit Falcons are coming off a impressive S53 which ended with a Four Stars Cup. The Falcons come into Season 54 with an impressive roster, although they lost a few pieces to call ups. The Falcons got probably the top prospect in the S54 Draft at 5th overall in Kekkonen which will help soften the blow of the losses. But the Falcons after this win are 4-2 on the season which is a quality start to their S54 campaign, and they hope a back-to-back cup win season. The Falcons have more challengers this season so it will be interesting to see if they can keep it up for the rest of this season.

Three Star Analysis (107 words)

First Star:
Magnus Liljestrom had a strong performance that earned him first star for the Detroit Falcons. With 21 minutes on the ice Liljestrom was excellent defensively and tallied an assist and two shots to bolster his stats offensively.
Second Star:
Kyle Sutton was able to post his first goal of the season, which also happened to be the only goal for the Maine Timber. Sutton also had a strong game in the defensive zone.
Third Star:
On three shots and the opening goal, Luke McMaster earned himself second star. His opening goal got momentum going for the Falcons, and he also tallied 4 blocked shots defensively.

Penalty Trouble (102 words)

Despite winning the game of a score of 3-1 the Detroit Falcons were unorganized and very undisciplined on the ice. With a four minute from star Jack Kanoff and an extremely undisciplined 10 minute slashing penalty for Joseph Fantobens. Fantobens penalty came in crunch time for his team with around 5 minutes left in the game trying to defend a 2 goal lead. After the slashing penalty, the Timber weren’t able to execute on their chance to tie the game up. This is a fortunate ending for Detroit and Fantobens and this could've been a much different ending for the Falcons.

Throwing the Body (101 words)

During this game, the Maine Timber must have had some extra aggression in practice as they displayed aggression the whole game and dominated the Detroit Falcons in the hits category. When I mean dominated, I mean dominated as they won the hit battle 23-6. Leading the charge was second star Kyle Sutton, who had 4 hits in the game; closely followed by O’McGuiness and Sondergaard with 3. This can be used as a major advantage in games going forward but they’re focus will need to be in the offensive zone and putting up more goals so they can win hockey games.

Comment 1: Interview with Falcons' GM @nour

1. Despite your win, Falcons wasn't a disciplined team in this game. You had 16 penalty minutes. Is that a problem in this season or it was just in this game?
nour: PIMs have definitely been a problem for us this season, we’re trying to find a balance between shoring up defensively, without being in the box so much

2. Maine was more aggressive team in this game. They had 23 hits in this match, while Falcons had only 6. Does aggressive play is not a part of your game plan?
nour: I think that was just the result of this game, we have a few heavy hitters so normally we would have more hits than that, I think we had possession most of this game so we didn’t need to hit as much either
3. You had much more shots in this game. Do you like outshooting your opponents?
nour: Absolutely, especially this season where our offence has been less reliable, getting big shot totals is always nice

(169 words)

Comment 2: Interview with Timber's GM @Citizen of Adraa

1. Maine had 23 hits in this game, while Detroit had only 6. Do you like playing aggressively?
Citizen of Adraa: It wasn't part of the plan for sure but plans occasionally don't work out the way they should, especially when it comes to something so volatile to outside influences like strategies.

2. You also were much better in faceoffs. Is this Maine's strenght?
Citizen of Adraa: Absolutely. We have one of the better C corps in the league and it shows on the stat sheets consistently.

3. Adrik Baranov was outstanding in defense this game. His defensive rating was 100. Is he your leader in defense?
Citizen of Adraa: Baranov is supposed to be the offensive part of the pairing, however I would say that 100 DGR is easier to get for a 2-way Dman on top of the ratings being a bit wonky to begin with anyway. Not much value in the stat when one tries to make comparisons.

(161 words)

Comment 3: Interview with Timber's player Adrik Baranov @Jorec

1. You had an outstanding game in defense. Your defensive rating was 100. What kind of defender you are?
Adrik Baranov: As an puck rushing offensive defenceman, I play a very aggressive game. It's not that defending isn't on my mind, it's just I'd rather be at the other end of the rink, trying to score and that's how I defend. They can't score if the puck is in their own end, yea know?

2. You blocked 3 shots in this game. Is shot blocking the most important part of your game?
Adrik Baranov: It is not, I'll do it but I don't do it often, not like many of my teammates. I'm not really expected to either.

3. You played over 22 minutes in this match. Are you happy about your big playing time in your rookie season or is it a pressure to play big minutes?
Adrik Baranov: I am very happy. I wanted the big minutes right away and to be trusted by my coach to play them is a big deal. I'm only going to get better from this point onward so to be trusted now just gives me that extra boost of confidence to keep working on my game.

Comment 1: Physical Dominance
One of the most interesting things about this contest between the two Simulation Major Junior Hockey League teams Detroit Falcons and Maine Timber was the physical dominance of the Timber. In this bout between the two teams, Maine came out swinging with a whopping 23 hits in comparison to Detroit's pitiful 6 hits. If you also look at the amount of PIMS that the teams has it is fascinating. Detroit is leading the PIMS in this game with 16 minutes, while Maine had only 4 minutes. This shows that Maine was both the most physical team and the most disciplined in this game, which is impressive.
(107 words)

Comment 2: Offensive Superiority
In this game it appears to be close, but upon a closer look it appears to lean a little bit in Detroit's favor. If you look at the shots on goals in is Detroit leading with 32 and Maine having only 21 shots. The offense on Detroit was doing a great job getting pucks in deep and shooting them on the net, it shows up on the scoreboard too with Detroit winning 3-1. Something that you also need to consider is how the teams played in the forecheck. Detroit had 7 takeaways and 6 giveaways, with Maine having the same amount of takeaways as Detroit and 9 giveaways. So as you can see from the numbers Detroit pulled away slightly in this category, while also maintaining the offensive game they had, this just seems to pull them ahead in this contest. (143 words)

Comment 3: Third Period Brawl
If you can take a look at the third period box score of this game you will notice one thing: a lot of penalties were called. It started off 43 seconds in with Jack Kanoff getting a two minute minor penalty for slashing. After that we have a 2 minute unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for Patrick Shepherd. Finally the last two penalties are both going to Joseph Fantobens with a 2 minute minor for slash, and a 10 minute game misconduct penalty. So either Detroit's penalty kill did a stand up job this game, or Maine has to take a long look at the penalty kill because none of these penalties led to any opportunities for Maine. (117 words)

Thanks-Tipping

This game saw Maine tender Leo Bloomfield have his net crowded by Detroit's attack. As a member of the Kraken it reminds me of the strategy they employed last year in the playoffs during the 4 game series we had--there front of the net was always busy and tips were a plenty, along with Detroit picking up the rebounds following that. While that strategy hasn't been fortuitous for them this season, seeing as at this moment the Falcons are occupying 4th in the west with 3 OT losses the difference between them and Maine, it certainly worked this game. In the second period Luke McMasters won the face off before sliding in front of the net for a tap-in past Bloomfield, and the silencer 3rd goal from Williams came in a similar set of circumstances. Leo Bloomfield had the hard task of jostling with the Detroit offence all night, and he recieved very little support, both in front of the net and on the score board.

Godly Performance

Thor Odinson had a strong game in net this evening that is in line with his season statline. Despite having a current record of 3-8-1 in 12 games started, he has arguably performed better than the starter Jobin. There was a lot of fanfare about how the job was up for grabs following a weak performance by Jobin last year, but the teams inability to play in front of their back up has shut down those rumours. This was another game where Odinson needed to stand strong and truly earned himself a spot in the win column. While the shot column may not look like it, there were two key points where Odinson had to stand on his head. In the first in a back and forth game he stood tall to the task of keeping it tied and giving his team a chance to win by not letting in any of the chances, and again in the early going of the second period he faced 6 shots in rapid succession to start the period but only ended up giving up a goal later on after he had kept his team in the game. So while watching the stat sheets may suggest Thor could've taken the night off, he was the difference between the win, and a "TSN Turning Point" being made in favour of Maine to start the second.

Jockeying for Position

The two games between the Timber and Falcons this sim were representative of the teams seasons as a whole. In terms of their season standings these two early games that were split between Maine and Detroit were a sign of how close these two teams were. At the time it may have been a sign that Maine is coming out of a rough year last year with a spark, it really was showing the regression the Detroit roster was facing. By the two splitting games it set the tone that Detroit was not only defeatable, but vulnerable. And in two four-point games for the standings, the two ended up breaking even. So really, these two games were inconsequential beyond foreshadowing the fall of the best J team of all team (arguably). The second frame of reference in terms of "jockeying for position" comes in todays game and the physical nature of it. I have already covered the physical nature of Detroit's strategy of driving to the net for rebounds and tips, but Maine was also present in the physicallity department. Instead of focusing on off-puck play, Maine excelled at taking the body on the puck-carrier to separate man from puck. Their +/- of 17 hits is surely a season high, even at the 30 game mark. Is this a sign that Maine's young team lacks the hockey IQ to know when not to hit; or could it even show they tired themselves out going into the third after the physical play they established, and ended up unable to defend against Detroit's attack? Momentum is a big part of hockey, and the failed powerplays and physical play leading no where in terms of scoreboard changes could have believably sunk a young team's morale heading into the final frame.

Flipped Script - 133 words

We come into this game, just two days removed from the Maine Timber beating the defending 4 Star Cup Detroit Falcons at their home stadium in a score of 4 to 2.  Detroit looked to even the season record and get some revenge from that beating.  They came out pretty quiet, only recording 10 Shots on Goal in the first Period, but Coach Tig must’ve said something pretty inspirational in the Locker Room at Intermission, as they were finally able to connect with the back of the net 6 minutes and 32 seconds into the second Period.  They capped it off with 2 more goals in the second half of the third Period from Reid Sutherland and Edward Williams to put the game out of reach of any comeback attempt from the Timber.

Laying the Wood - 162 words

Maine came out of the gates hitting, and not stopping.  Maine was able to out hit Detroit in the entire game by a total of 23 to only 6 hits.  Starting off physical with 8 hits in the first period, Maine tried to control the pace of the game through pure aggression.  They continued this into the second period with 9 more hits on the Falcons players while keeping the game close at 1 to 1.  They finally slowed down a little in the third period, only accounting for 6 hits.  This may have been what gave Detroit enough space to get the two goals in that lead to their eventual victory.
Leading the Timber in hits is their Left Wing, Kyle Sutton, who put up a total of 4 hits through the course of the game.  Not to be outdone by a Forward, Defensemen Mikkel Asmus Sondergard and Hennesey-Gallchobhar O’McGuiness were right behind him with 3 hits each of their own.

Discipline Needed - 133 words

Some words must have been exchanged on the ice that led to Joseph Fantobens Slashing Penalty which the referees deemed a Game Misconduct and Joseph was given an additional 10 minutes for the severity of the infraction.  This is something that doesn’t come out of the blue, so there was definitely some chatter coming from some of the Maine Timber that pushed Joseph Fantobens over the edge to make such a dangerous play, especially with his team holding on to the 3 to 1 lead at the time, this could have easily been a turning point for the Timber to get back into this game.  Coach Tig will have to have some words with Joseph to calm him down and make sure this isn’t a reoccurring issue for the rest of the season.

Snooze Fest

That first period saw only 17 shots combined from both teams with the Detroit Falcons putting up 10 shots on goal and the Maine Timber putting up 7 shots on goal. No points were put up on the board from either teams and with the lack of scoring and lack of shooting there wasn't much to do this period. Fans in the stands could be seen yawning and hoping for some excitement in the second and third periods and it was just there luck they would get that. As for the first period both teams played a more defensive focused game not giving each other much space. Many plays transpired into nothing and play died more often than not, many fans were not expecting much after this first period. What I do commend both teams on is how they were able to lock each other down and play most of the game at center ice which is impressive in and of itself. (162 words)

Gassed

With such a close and physical game it was expected that one team would end up getting gassed and mistakes were bound to be made that would ultimately lead to a loss. To no ones surprise the Maine Timber were showing their exhaustion in the third period when they were only able to put up five shots on net and could really not get anything going both in the offensive and more surprisingly in the defensive end. With such a close game this whole time, the Timber were not able to keep up in the third and the game went from being tied 1-1 by the end of the second to a 3-1 loss for the Maine Timber against the more veteran Detroit Falcons. Loser Analysis

Although the Maine Timber ultimately lost the game 3-1 they did have a strong first and second period and just need to learn how to close out their games. Throughout the first two periods they kept the game against the Detroit Falcons extremely close and it become a bit of a nail biter in the second period. Maine is a young team and will only grow from this experience and facing the former champions and staying toe to toe with them for two periods is no small feat. The Maine Timber just need to keep up this level of play and outwork the team they are facing and they will rise in the rankings. Although a difficult loss to take expect them to come back next game a lot stronger. (131 words)

Comment One: Falcon's win, but questions are for real
Detroit got their revenge from with a 4-2 loss to Maine with a 3-1 win. The defending champs haven't quite found their S53 form yet, and will indeed continue to struggle until know. But they were able to get some revenge on Maine here. It did take them into the third period to take their final lead. Despite this win, there are question about the defending champion's quest to defend their title are for real. The Falcons are just in the playoff picture and they will need to continue to win if they want to sneak into the postseason tournament.

Comment Two: Anything but Goals and Shots
The Falcons had 16 PIM compared to the Timber's 4. The Falcons had 6 hits to the Timber's 23. The Falcons had 20 faceoff wins to the Timber's 31. The only stat other than goal and shots that the Falcons beat the Timber in was their 6 giveaways to the Timber's 9. The Falcons will have to improve their all around game to beater defend their title. While the Falcons may have won this game by two goals and won the shots on goal battle 32 to 21, they will have to improve the the rest of their all around game.

Comment three: PIM Report
Can a single team really take 16 PIM? The Falcons did just that, including a game miscount as a part of that. Having to kill off penalties is a situational not team wants to be in. I expect they will have some extended discussions about this in practices over the next few weeks. The Timber on the other had took just two minors, for a total of 4 PIM, a much better job of staying disciplined. Despite this the Falcons won the game. Penalties aren't everything but the Falcons should try to avoid these high PIM games in the future.
