Falcons Detroit Falcons (4-2-0) Falcons  vs.  Timber Maine Timber (4-3-0) Timber

Game Link: https://simulationhockey.com/games/smjhl...l_0_18.txt

We're off to Portland, Maine in the beautiful Cross Insurance Arena. It's a tale as old as time; bird vs. wood. Who will come out on top? Both teams are sitting on 4 wins and 8 points. Detroit is the older and more experienced team on the ice, boasting a freshly-ironed S53 4-Star Cup banner back in Detroit. Maine has been leaning on their youth this season. 12 rookies makes them the youngest team in the SMJHL. Can the young blood beat up these old farts, or will the old dogs show these kids a few new tricks?

Detroit went with their backup, giving Jobin a night off. Thor Odinson gets the nod in net. Maine goes with veteran goalie Leo Bloomfield, who boasts a 2-1-0 record thus far into the season.

FIRST PERIOD
There was some jostling between players right off the draw. Edward Williams and Alexander Roach get kicked out of the first faceoff. Would that be a sign of things to come? It was a tight defensive period. The teams seemed to cool off after the initial tension. After 20, the score remained 0-0, with the Falcons outshooting the Timber 10-7. Would this game turn into a battle of the goaltenders?

SECOND PERIOD
Second period rolls around. It remains tight until about 6 minutes into the period. Offensive draw for the Falcons. The puck is won back to Kanoff, who rips a slap shot towards the net... And it's deflected in the goal by Luke McMaster for his 3rd goal of the season! Birds take the lead 1-0. Two minutes later, and now Maine has control. Bjerg gathers the puck after a stop from Leo Bloomfield. He coasts-to-coasts the puck. When he gains control in the offensive zone he relays the puck to Kyle Sutton who rips a slapper... And scores for his first of the season! The period ends in a 1-1 tie. Maine killed off a Patrick Shepherd goaltender interference penalty right at the end of the period. Would the momentum from the penalty kill help them in the 3rd period?

THIRD PERIOD
Big kill for the Wood at the end of the second, now the third period starts with a Jack Kanoff tripping penalty 48 seconds in. Will the Timber capitalize? They have some good chances, but the Falcons ultimately kill it off. Perhaps momentum has shifted to them. Minutes after the Timber killed off an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty issued to Patrick Shepherd, the Falcons get a good chance. After a bad dump attempt, Wanesly takes control of the puck in the Timber zone. He gets it to Jmac Ncheese and dishes it to Sutherland who snaps it... for a goal! Reid Sutherland's first of the year gives Detroit the 2-1 lead! Minutes later, Edward Williams seals the deal for the Birds after a nifty passing play from Magnus Liljestrom. Liljestrom fakes a changeup of a pass to Williams who is able to tip it in for his 1st of the year!

Penalty Killers
Detroit had 16 penalty minutes in the game to Maine's 4 minutes. They had a of players putting in the work when they were a man down. The Falcons had 12 players contribute on the PK unit. Luke McMaster and Burlok Sulfurgold each had over 3 minutes SHTOI, but O'Shea lead the team with 3 minutes and 17 seconds. Even though they kill off Kanoff and Fantobens mistakes, Detroit did not give up a power play goal on Maine's 3 opportunities. I'd say that the Falcons got lucky, but the players gave the best effort and shutdown the opposition and got the always needed win today.

Timber Pressure
The way that the Timber apply pressure is by using their bodies and being the more defensvie team in this game. Maine had 23 hits on the Falcon players while Detroit only had 6 hits. The Falcons were still able to get 32 shots even thought the Timber players blocked 21 shots. Maine is notorious for blocking shots.  Another stat the Maine thrives in is in Faceoffs. Maine won 31 of the 51 faceoffs in the game. Maine is one of the best, if not the best, team at blocking shots and faceoffs. But success in those parts of the game has not proven to be a successful winning gameplan.

Selfless Player of the Game
A player on the losing team that left it all out on the ice is Adrik Baranov. It is hard to go against a player who has a defensive game rating of 100. Baranov did not contribute on the scoreboard but he kept his team in the game. He had 3 blocked shots, 1 hit, 1 takeaway. He spent 4 minutes and 43 seconds on the power play. During his 24 shifts, he logged just over 22 minutes of ice time. Maine had 2 other players who had really good games as well. Sondergard and Kalashnikov scored DGR of 94 and 93 respectively. All 3 defenseman played one heck of game.

Sin Bin Bound
You never want to take a penalty, because even if you don't give up a goal, you can give up some of your momentum. The Falcons didn't give up a power play goal, but not for a lack of chances given to the Timber. It didn't help their case that all their penalties except 1 came in the third period. Jack Kanoff had taken a tripping penalty at the start of the period, to give the Timber a chance to take a lead, but they couldn't capitalize. Fantobens gave the Timber another chance, near the end of the third, with a slashing penalty resulting in a game misconduct as well. Luckily for Detroit, Maine could not capitalize on this powerplay, and the Falcons cruised to a 3-1 win.

It Starts with the First
The 2nd overall pick for the Maine Timber in the recent SMJHL Draft, Rikard Bjerg, managed to bank his first assist tonight, in the 3-1 loss to the Falcons. While it is always tough to celebrate a first when your team loses, Bjerg should be proud of this accomplishment. He has shown to be a great two-way player with a strong offensive presence when it needs to be shown, and he is a hard worker that will leave it all on the ice no matter what. There will be many, many more to follow from Bjerg, so the Maine Timber have themselves a star on their hands.

The Three Stars
Your third star tonight.. from the Detroit Falcons.. Luke McMaster! McMaster came into today's game flying, and it was clear early on something was going to happen from his hands. He managed to pot the first goal of the game, putting the Falcons up 1-0, and made it a difficult time for the Timber.
Your second star tonight.. from the Maine Timber.. Kyle Sutton! From rookie Rikard Bjerg, Sutton was able to score just mere moments after McMaster, to tie the game back up again at 1 a piece. It ended up being their only goal tonight though.
And your first star tonight.. from the Detroit Falcons.. Magnus Liljestrom! Assisting the goal that really ended up putting away the Timber, Liljestrom had a huge night in his own end, making life difficult for any Timber player to get a chance on net.

Comment 1 - The Crystal Ball

Looking back, it was apparent that the Detroit Falcons were looking to capitalize on the momentum of their recent Four Star Cup victory, going 4-2-0 in their first 6 games, including the bashing of the Timber that was expected, with the team producing well. Unfortunately, their season has been meddling in mediocrity, currently boasting a record of 18-21-3, and frustrations are blooming within the organization given the lack of change the roster has had between seasons. The same can be said for Maine, as their 15-27-0 record has been disappointing, much like the Timber and Raiders of the past few seasons.

Comment 2 - Sin Bin Blues

This game showcased 3 players heading to the penalty box, and all 3 were high profile prospects. Jack Kanoff, Patrick Sheppard, and Joseph Fantobens ended up in the penalty box at some point in the game, including a game misconduct penalty for Fantobens for slashing. This was a game where tempers flared high, and it showed in the last 5 minutes, where numerous shouting matches occurred, and not so nice things were shared between the two teams. Could it be the start of a new rivalry, considering the long history of both franchises? Only time will tell, but both teams will never forget this game.

Comment 3 - Brains or Brawn? Brains.

If there was something proven, it's that no matter how much grit you put into the game of hockey, the only thing that matters is the scoresheet, and it proved true tonight. The Timber produced 23 hits compared to the lowly 6 the Falcons produced, and it was apparent they were playing the grind-game to combat the skill game Detroit plays. However, it was moot due to the fact Detroit was able to show resilience, and continued to throw shots at the net. In the end, Detroit played the game, while Maine played to slow down the game. Despite the loss, Maine did their job, even if it did cost them the game.

The Maine Timber watch

Comment 1: Baranovs dilemma (121 words)
The rookie Adrik Baranov has had a killer season both offensively and defensively. But this game in particular showcases just how good he has been in his own end. In the 22 minutes he was deployed, he managed 3 blocked shots, 1 takeaway and 1 hit while sporting a 100 DGR. The Moscow native might have had a real off-night when it comes to his offensive ability, but he more than anything managed to make up for it while having the best DGR on the ice. His 49 OGR while having almost 5 minutes of PP time can not really be seen as effective, and many would say that the coaches should've changed him out. It just wasn't his night, offensively.

Comment 2: Kyle 'NotyetAlex' Sutton (169 words)
Kyle Sutton has really showcased himself in his sophmore year, scoring 23 points in 44 games with 7 of them coming from the PP. However, this was one of those unusual games where his contributions also stretched into his own end. Kyle is a well skating sniper that is lacking in his defensive game, but showed today that he can contribute to it when he wants to. 2 blocked shots and 4 hits while providing good cover for his defencemen showcased a player that by next season could be amongst the deadliest forwards in the entire league. Add his defensive performance that rendered in a 61 DGR (3rd amongst forwards) with the 1 goal he scored tonight on 3 shots, and you get a glimpse of a player of what he can become. He was the highest rated forward on the team due to his consistent performance. Players such as Hellqvist, Oscarsson, Roach and Danke had decent performances in one asset of their game but lacked in the other.

Comment 3: 3rd period struggle (178)
Nothing of note really happened in the 1st period, and the 2nd one only had two goals and one penalty each. The third however, is when the teams really started going at each other. Only 50 seconds into the period Detroits Jack Kanoff got 2 minutes for slashing. 7 minutes later, Maines Patrick Shepherd got his second penalty of the game. 2 minutes for Unsportsmanlike Conduct. However, no goals were scored until the halfway point. Reid Sutherland found himself in a good spot to score his first goal of the season, and he makes no mistake. 2-1 Detroit in The Cross Insurance Arena up in Portland. Detroit would keep the momentum going when 3 minutes later Edward Williams would score his first of the season to finalize the score at 3-1 Detroit. This period showcased the lack of offensive power for Maine while highlighting their good defensive effort. Meanwhile, Detroit put on a clinic to shut all efforts down in the 3rd period while scoring two for themselves to bring all the points back to the Falcons nest.

Goon Squad?
Whenever a game misconduct is handed out, you have to question the intentions of that player. The league has been trying hard over the past few years to cut down on egregious penalties, slashing calls being one of the rare few that garner a game misconduct call. So when Joseph Fantobens of the Detroit Falcons had commited the slashing sin at 15:35, you have to question the motives. Was this a personal attack, perhaps retribution for a pre-season occurrence? Was this just a heat of the moment slash that got taken too far? Either way the penalty was the main contribution for Detroit having 16 PIM on the night. It didn't stop them from making the best out of it though, completing a 3-1 victory over the Timber.

3 Stars
1st Star - Magnus Liljestrom - Detroit Falcons: Coming up with one assist on the game's final goal, Magnus was a stud in the Falcon's defensive zone. His plus/minus was the best of both teams, and his OGR and DGR both were the main reasons he got tonight's first star.

2nd Star - Kyle Sutton - Maine Timber: Scoring the lone goal for the Timber tonight, Kyle Sutton was the best overall player for the Timber this evening. He was a big factor in all 3 zones, and was one of the only shining points for Maine tonight.

3rd Star - Luke McMaster - Detroit Falcons: Scoring his first goal of the year, McMaster had a statement game tonight, playing well in front of the Maine netminder and in front of his own. He was able to block 4 shots tonight and those contributions gave him the 3rd star.

What went wrong with Maine?
The bigger question here is did anything go right? Sure they scored a goal, and led in hits and Face Offs won. But 21 shots isn't going to get two points. Especially when you see yourself with 16 PIM on the night. They need to play a balanced game, the Falcon's obviously weren't deterred by the Timber, seemingly coming away from every hit with the puck still, and putting up 32 shots on goal. If the Timber put a bit more focus on taking shots instead of going for hits, you might see a difference on the score board. Coaches will have some big topics moving forward before the next game. You have to expect the Power Play is going to be the focus during practices moving forward.

Comment 1:A Tree Falls?
The Maine Timber entered the game at a solid 4-2 with their top performers showing up and taking care of business. After this match-up with the Detroit Falcons they will have to go back to the drawing board. Being out-shot by the Falcons 32-21 and losing despite the Falcons putting up 16 PIMs over the three periods. Maine was able to level the game in the second period with the heroics off Kyle Sutton and Rikard Bjerg, but soon fell apart and were unable to create many chances after the second period goal. Maine looks to be a squad that could use this as a rallying point to move forward and be a powerhouse team or let this get in their head and rattle around the rest of the season. Whatever happens they better try to purge the taste of this game out of their mouth quickly. Because they stink.

Comment 2: Shots, Shots, Shots Shots Shots

Detroit came out with some weak jabs early in the contest. Pushing the Timber back onto their heels for the rest of the game. Early on the shots were fairly even and the Maine tried to set their feet again after the Sutton goal, following up McMaster's early game haymaker. But soon after the second period ended the Falcons came out throwing bombs. Out-shooting the Timber massively in the final period and potting two goals, scored by Reid Sutherland and Edward Williams, and making sure that the Maine squad wasn't breathing anymore. If the, now 4-2, Falcons can continue putting up shots like this this season they will be formidable foe to face every night.

Comment 3: In The Box

Goon Squad Squad! The Detroit Falcons came out looking to define themselves as goon city in this game. With an unbalanced 16-to-4 minutes in the box, it's a wonder that the Falcons were able to take this game. But given the poor play of the Maine Timber and the missed opportunities in the third. The Falcons may have just scared the Timber with such physical play. We'll go over the penalty which defines that the Falcons might have just gotten in the heads of the Maine players. At 7:55 of the third period, Maine Timbers' Center Patrick Shepherd was sent to the box for pulled one of the Detroit players down by his face-mask. The act drew him two minutes but also demonstrated the Falcons had gotten into their heads and soon they capitalized and took control of the game.

Comment 1: Heated Affair
Early in the season tensions are always starting to build as the Detroit Falcons and Maine Timber butted heads in a heated affair tonight. Maine came up short on the scoreboard, but they certainly imposed themselves physically. Although it didn't help them win, they didn't allow the Falcons players to get comfortable and will hope they've done some damage that might carry over into their next meeting, registering 23 hits on the night to Detroit's 6. Detroit was clearly flustered as a result, taking a total of 16 PIMs including a 10-minute misconduct to Joseph Fanotbens following a slashing penalty. This will be a match-up to watch throughout the season for any more bad blood.

Comment 2: Team Win
The 3-1 victory for the Detroit Falcons tonight came as a result of a complete team effort, with no one individual looking more important to the win than any other. Indeed, on their three goals tonight the Falcons had points from nine different players, with Luke McMaster, Jack Kanoff, Burlok Sulfurgold, Reid Sutherland, Hmac NCheese, Frederick Wanesly, Edward Williams, Magnus Liljestrom, and Cal Labovitch all recording a point in the contest. This bodes well for the defending Four Star Cup Champs, if they can get all of their lines rolling they'll be in a solid position to try and successfully defend their title this season.

Comment 3: Backup Gets the Job Done
The Detroit Falcons gave starting goaltender Jobin a night off tonight, instead giving Thor Odinson the start between the pipes. Odinson is the less experienced of the two netminders, but you wouldn't have known it from his performance tonight, overshadowing his opponent Bloomfield on the other end. Odinson wasn't as busy as his Maine Timber counterpart, but he was every bit as impressive as more, turning aside 20 of the 21 shots he faced, doing more than enough to secure the win for his team with a .952 SV%. Jobin is unlikely to be displaced as starter this year, but if Odinson can keep his play up and take some of the load for Jobin, the Falcons will be in good shape with a fresh goalie for the playoffs by season's end.
