(This post was last modified: 06-11-2020, 10:05 PM by TheSparkyDee.)

Game 1 of 5 today in the action packed SMJHL. Today we see the Colorado Raptors square off against the Vancouver Whalers in beautiful sunny Vancouver. Both teams have came out struggling to start the season. 2-2 for the Colorado Raptors, and Vancouver Whalers are sitting at 1-6 on the year. Vancouver has been struggling the most out of the two teams.

First period: It was quiet during the first period for both teams. The Colorado Raptors outshot the home team of Vancouver. No penalties during the first period. BUT there was a fight between two women in the stands. As you can see by the video the first woman’s snags the second woman’s hair and drags over into the Vancouver’s bench, and throws her onto the players laps. The police and security rush to the bench to break up the fight as the players started to cheer for the fight and the players even started making bets who was gonna win the fight. Some Colorado players came over to watch the fight. As the ladies got taken out of the arena by security. Everyone was booing the security for stopping this amazing fight.

Second Period: Now that the fun was over it was back to hockey. The second period was interesting because 50 seconds into the second period. The Vancouver Whalers scored with an amazing goal by Ryosuke Sato his first on the year. 10 minutes into the game Bryce McMahon scored from a perfect pass from Slimey Snail, that was Bryce McMahon’s first goal until when he added another goal with only less than two minutes on the clock. He had another pass set up perfectly for him by Domenic Alessandrini. Johnny Shuffleboard has two assists as well as Domenic Alessandrini in the second period. Vancouver went into the third period with a 3-0 goal lead.

Third Period: The third period was full of back and forth shot after shot after shot from both teams. Colorado Raptors had many chances to try and chip away at the lead in this game. They were outshooting the Vancouver Whalers each period. It was finally the final meteor that hit the last surviving Raptor and ended the Raptors chances at surviving this game. The meteor was a puck that got passed the Colorado’s goalie in the fourteenth minute. This time it was Sven Yxskaft scoring after being set up by Wile Coyote, that goal was Sven Yxskaft’s first goal on the year. Despite Colorado having outshot Vancouver 32-25 they still left the game with an (L) on their record with a 4-0 lose.

Moving Forward
The Whalers (2-6-0) came out with their strongest performance of the year in this game against the Raptors (2-3-1). A complete offensive and defensive showing for the B.C. Boys. We knew going in these two rivals, both who stood at the bottom of the standings, had something to prove and want to use this game as a statement game. They know they're going to have to claw their way back up to put themselves back in the running. Could Vancouver's big win be enough to give them some momentum? We hope so, they showed glimpses of their potential in this game. For now they celebrate, but the next game isn't far away, and they're going to have to take this season one game at a time to prove to the rest of the league that the Whalers are a force to be reckoned with.

Three Stars
Name Redacted (G) - Stopping each one of the 32 shots he faced today, it's not surprise that our first star of the game is Name Redacted. What an impressive showing from this Chinese goal tender. Keep an eye on him, as this is his first game of the year, and you know he wants to build on this momentum.

Bryce McMahon (RW) - McMahon came into this game desperate for points, and he came out strong with 2 goals in the second period. An even strength at 10:13 followed by a Power Play marker at 18:25.

Johnny Shuffleboard (RD) - This blue liner put up two assists today, his first two of the year. It was his defensive play that earned him tonight's 3rd star though. His solid, responsible play in front of his net allowed his team to get ahead early and never let off the gas.

Unsung Hero:
Tonight's unsung hero of the game is Domenic Alessandrini. He provided two assists in this game, getting the primary on the goal that opened the second period goal onslaught just :50 in. This Italian rookie notched his first two points of the year, we expect big things to come from Domenic. Going 16th overall in this year's draft, the "Italian Stallion" still has a lot to prove moving forward, but he should be a mainstay on the Whaler's young roster, especially if he keeps this pace up. He was neck and neck for the 3rd star tonight, and if he continues to play like this, the rest of the league will soon take note.

A Fight for the Ages
Arguably the most entertaining event during the first period of this game took place not on the ice, but in the stands. It was reported that two women fought in the stands, and one of them was even tossed over the boards and onto the laps of one of the Vancouver Whalers players. It was also reported that both the GMs and the coaches of the respective hockey teams were quite impressed with the fight. Each respective General Manager of the teams actually approached the women asking if they knew how to skate and if they would be willing to join their squads in an enforcer role. They were both flattered, but ultimately declined, as they figured they would be able to make more money in the UFC.

Underwhales
Although the two teams had relatively similar records going into this game, the Vancouver Whalers were favored to lose this game by many pundits and critics. They were able to take full advantage of full ice and jump ahead in wins from the Colorado Raptors. Vancouver is just beginning to rebuild their team from the ground up. They are one of the youngest teams in the league and much of the weight and pressure of winning falls on their rookies, who are still learning and adjusting to playing in the SMJHL. At least two rookies had points on three of the four total goals for the Whalers. Johnny Shuffleboard and Domenic Alessandrini specifically had a tremendous game in front of their home fans.

Three Stars
3. Johnny Shuffleboard – The rookie offensive defenseman has a huge game for the struggling Whalers. Two big assists allowed his team to hold a lead comfortably throughout the game. As one of the most dominant rookie defenseman in the SMJHL right now, look for Shuffleboard to make some noise in the upcoming SHL entry draft.

2. Bryce McMahon – This second-year leader for the Whalers hails from Great Britain, and led the charge offensively for Vancouver with two big goals. With such a young team, the Whalers look to the right-winger for leadership and a source for mentorship for the many rookies on the team.

1. Name Redacted – An easy pick for first star of the game goes to the Vancouver Whalers goaltender who was able to hold strong and pull a shutout for his squad. This was not a low-shot “easy” shutout for the Chinese native second-year player. He faced a solid 32 shots from the Raptors and was able to stop every single one.

Comment 1 - Late Rounders Unite!

For the Vancouver Whalers, their season has been like a rollercoaster, but one thing they can rely upon is great prospects, especially those who were drafted lower on the draft board. This game really showed off Bryce McMahon (49th Overall), who had been pretty unnoticed, scoring two goals and being a dominating force. Name Redacted (33rd Overall) showed himself to be quite the netminder, posting the shutout on 32 shots, earning the 1st star of the game. When asked for a comment, McMahon stated "It's a great time, but I know I have to continue to grind and prove that I am worthy of an SHL roster spot, especially one where the competition is fierce like in Edmonton."

Comment 2 - Shuffleboarding Ain't for Old Folks

Vancouver's 1st round selection continues to turn heads, as Johnny Shuffleboard recorded two assists in the shutout against Colorado. It seems the young defenseman has made significant strides in the SMJHL, recording 19 points (4 goals, 15 assists) through the last leg of the season, and it's certain he'll break 20 points as a rookie. His current skillset allows him to be very offesively minded, and it showed during this game. It could be seen that he started moving the puck into the opposing zone, and he knows he can't be a hero and just go one on one with the goalie, so he recognizes to pass to a teammate, and the rest is history.

Comment 3 - A Huuver Dam vs The Unknown

The battle shown in this game was one many people were looking forward to: Jerry Huuervi vs Name Redacted. These two are considered some of the best the league has to offer right now, and it was a battle many were looking forward to. The game was decisive, however, and played out to favor Name Redacted, as he not only held the shutout against more shots, but Huuervi let in 4 shots for an 0.840 SV%. It was noticeable that Huuervi had been jittery during extended offensive play by the Raptors, and it showed immensly. It didn't help that there was also major defensive lapses from the Raptors blue line, which has been noted to have been discussed heavily in practice following the game.

Comment 1: Name Redacted, Goals Redacted (157 words)
He has played the most games, and has the highest SV% of any starting goalie in the league. Name Redacted also has 4 shutouts in the league, and this game started off his great season in the best of ways. The first star of the entire SMJHL season 54 went to this magnificent goalie. Colorado weren't even that bad apart from the high amounts of giveaways. But as soon as they found themselves facing down the great Name Redacted they couldn't beat him. This was especially evident in the 2nd half of the game. From the halfway point in the 2nd period until the game was over, Colorado shot 25 times. They were truly trying their hardest to break him down, but it wasn't to be this night. Name celebrated this upset win over the Colorado Raptors with a shutout in what would become one of the highlights of the season for the British Columbia based team.

Comment 2: Carlos Brown getting back problems (131 words)
Carlos puts up one of the most complete offensive performances of the season in the first game out and got nothing to show for it. The Canadian physical beast had a 90 OGR and a 70 DGR. He had 6 shots on goal, 3 hits, 2 takeaways and was the driving force of the entire offense of Colorado this evening. He had fantastic passing, some really great shots and no help at all to speak of from his team mates. The second highest OGR on his team? 62. That is a giant 28 rating difference, truly showcasing just how much he carried himself out there. If only one or two players would step up beside himself offensively, I don't think the team would be looking at a very different scoreline.

Comment 3: Hidden underneath the stars (165 words)
Name Redacted, Johnny Shuffleboard and Bryce McMahon deservedly got the 3 stars of the game for their performances. But bubbling underneath that, we see some other true standout performers. We mentioned Carlos Brown earlier, but he wasn't alone in driving play with no points to show for it. William Hartmann shares that. He was 2nd on his team in DGR while playing LW, and 1st in OGR. Even though he didn't end up on the score sheet, it was evident from watching the game that he was the driving force behind a lot of the plays being made by Vancouver. Domenic Alessandrini also had a fantastic performance.. offensively. In his SMJHL debut he had 2 assists while rocking a 65 OGR. But in his own end, he was a liability. Not really doing anything of note while showcasing a 50 DGR, he was 2nd worst on the team. But to make his debut and score 2 assists, shouldn't that account for more than an acknowledgement?

Turning point of the game

I think it is very clear that the turning point in tonight was the first intermission. Unfortunately I was not in the Whaler Lockerroom so I don’t know if the coach gave an inspirational speech that pumped up the team or that the whalers didn’t want to lose at home. Either way they came out scoring within a minute and never looked back. What is clear, is that the Raptors seemed sluggish and disinterested in the game in the first minute and were caught off guard. They did go on to have a strong game but could not get back that early goal as they went in to lose 4-0. This goes to show you can’t win a game in a minute but you can lose one.

Player of the Game

Name Redacted is my clear cut choice for player of the game as it usually is when a goalie puts up a shutout. Redacted was good at the start but as the tempo picked up he started to shine, making that early second period goal all Vancouver would need to see a win. He stopped all 32 shots in great fashion more often than not making it look easy as the Raptors tried harder and harder to beat him. Redacted definitely will have momentum coming out if this win and should be a bright spot for Vancouver for the rest of the year if he can have performances like this one tonight.

Highlight of the Night

The highlight of the night is definitely the goal by Ryosuke Sato in the second period. Sato was absolutely buzzing all night long as he put up four shots through the game but it would the one in the first minute of the second period that was the best.Johnny Shuffleboard but the puck down low for Domenic Alessandrini who saw Sato creeping in from the point down to the top of the circle. The pass was made and with a lightning fast one-timer the puck was past the Colorado goalie just under the bar. The crowd erupted in a loud cheer and the 0-0 tie was broken, the Whalers took the lead and never looked back.

Comment 1: Game Changer
In a battle between two sides off to rough starts to the season, someone needed to step up and be the game changer - maybe not just for this contest, but maybe to turn their squad's season around. On this night there can be no debate: Name Redacted, with a spectacular goaltending performance, was the game changer for the Vancouver Whalers! While Whalers faithful haven't had much to be excited about, they could get used to watching Redacted stand on his head the way he did tonight - they'll just hope he won't have to if their team can keep scoring 4 goals a night. Redacted performed very well, and you wouldn't know from the scoreline that it was actually the Colorado Raptors who controlled most of the play. Turning aside all 32 shots he faced, Redacted was perfect tonight and accordingly earned first star honours.

Comment 2: Interview with Jed Mosley Jr.
We caught up with Raptors rookie defenceman Jed Mosley Jr. to ask about tonight's loss to the Vancouver Whalers.
Reporter: Jed, what went wrong for the team out there?
Jed Mosley Jr.: We felt like we played a pretty strong game, we did a lot of things right, but we just couldn't get the puck to go in. Nobody likes to have nights like that but it happens, you run into a hot goalie like the one we played tonight and there's not much you can do about it.
R: Your team falls further back in the standings now, can you turn things around?
J: Definitely. It's still early in the season, so we aren't too worried. We're not happy about where we are but there's a lot of fight in that room and we know we can make a surge back up, we just have to put it all together and string some wins together.
R: Thanks, Jed.

Comment 3: Post Game Analysis
It's a disappointing night for the Colorado Raptors to be sure, as they failed to score on any of their 32 shots and fall 4-0 to the Whalers. What went wrong for the Raptors? They seemed to do everything right throughout the game, winning the battle on the shot clock, delivering more hits, limiting their giveaways, and winning a majority of the faceoffs. None of this was enough, however, as they simply couldn't turn their strong play into goals on the scoresheet. They did go to the box twice, and while the Whalers did net a power play market, this wasn't fatal. Ultimately it came down to an inability to convert, which the Raptors will hope won't continue to be an issue much longer. Strong possession numbers are positive to be sure, but they can only get you so far. Luckily there is plenty of time left in the season to turn things around, but something has to change before it becomes too late!

Comment 1: Rookie Watch
Both squads came into this game sporting a large number of rookies. The Vancouver Whalers took advantage of it's youth in this game with a total of 6 points being distributed among the rookies in their first regular season SMJHL game. The two major standouts in the game were both Vancouver players in Domenic Alessandrini and Johnny Shuffleboard. With two primary assists Alessandrini set the tone  for the game, setting up Ryosuke Sato on the first goal and Bryce McMahon on the third in the second period. Shuffleboard pitched in on the same goals with a secondary assist on the same two goals. The two other rookie point getters in the game were the Whalers Wile Coyote and Devin Basher, both grabbing an assist on the goal to put the Whalers up 4-0.

Comment 2: Three Stars of the Game
Third Star - Johnny Shuffleboard - Shuffleboard, the first selection of the Whalers in the S54 SMJHL draft, finished the game with two secondary assists on the first and third goal of the game. Shuffleboard showed off his offensive chops and great vision is his first ever SMJHL game. Cementing why he was an early pick and why he will be a top young gunsin the SMJHL for the next few seasons.
Second Star - Bryce McMahon - Sophomore Winger Bryce McMahon finished withg two goals in his first game of the S54 season. The young winger usually shows off with his passing chops, he took it upon himself  to finish tonight. Sealing the game and further putting it away in the 2nd period.
First Star - Name Redacted - The sensational backstop for the Vancouver Whalers showed what makes him one of the more talented goaltending prospects in the world. Shutting down 32 shots from the upstart Colorado squad and helping sealing the game with his first shutout in his first game of the season.
[170 Words]

Comment 3: In The Box
Only two penalties were accessed throughout the entire game and both hurt the Colorado Raptors. At 15:43 of the second period Colorado Raptors Left Winger Carlos Brown was called for a trip. Despite this penalty being unintentional the linesman had to blow the play dead. Luckily for Carlos the Whalers were unable to to generate any serious scoring chance on the powerplay. The second, and more regrettable penalty, came from that of  Defender Anrijs Asts. Roughing was the call and it was two minutes in the sin bin. The Whalers and winger Bryce McMahon weren't about to let a second consecutive powerplay go to waste and put the puck past goaltender Jerry Huuveri - putting the game fully out of reach.
