Ushering in a new era of goaltending for the SHL
#1

While I was waiting for the games to start earlier today I started thinking about all the new goalies who have both entered the league and who are now playing their first seasons, or are rising prospects with their club. Since goalies are themselves a unique position and we have been blessed with some very high quality new goaltenders in the SMJHL these last few seasons. I want to give a lite review of these walls of the future. I'm arbitrarily putting the cutoff at S50 players, as that seems like a good point, the players won't be full blown stars in the league yet, but they will definitely have a ton of potential to talk about.

First team up is Baltimore, starting goalie Luca Del Vecchio @Zoone16 is in just his second season with the big club as the starter. He has already been putting up some very solid numbers for statistics and he's almost at 1k TPE. Among the top earners of S51, if Zoone can keep up this earning pace he could be the Aleister Cain of this next generation of goalies with a healthy TPE lead over the competition.
Up and coming we have Leo Bloomfield @BloomeyGB who who is in his second season in the SMJHL. Leo took over the starter role for the Timber this season after splitting games roughly 50/50 last season and is looking like a very capable #2 with a few seasons of seasoning. Already with a position of Fed Head in IIHF, that job is a good sign for site commitment and future earnings, including player growth.

Buffalo is another recipient of a young, S51 goalie in Elizabeth Doyle @Evok. She is finishing her rookie season in the SHL and is backstopping the SHL's best record for Buffalo. She's going to be a frontrunner for ROTY this season, and should be included in talks for some general awards as well. A recent recipient of a yet to be named SMJHL expansion team, Evok is an excellent bet of someone who will be around for a while, so the security in this position is solid.
Prospect wise Buffalo is also grooming a backup and Detroit's next starting goalie with Thor Odinson @feeler. A S54 Thor has been earning at a fantastic pace nearing 400 TPE. He should be down for another 2 seasons, but after that will be itching for ice time in the SHL. This tandem is shaping up to be a phenomenal 1A 1B tandem in a few seasons, which should help Buffalo a lot with condensed schedule periods.

Chicago may very well be looking to this upcoming draft as they don't have a goalie in their cupboards (they did draft a goalie in the last draft, but immediately flipped him for a pick and a future. Tibuk Soonika is still chugging along and will be able to combat regression for a few seasons still, but it is a good time for Chicago to be taking a serious look at their future in the crease if they want to time a good transition.

Hamilton has a great prospect with Jobin @"Awesomecakes" in waiting. He's a S53, so he will be able to stay down for next season before coming up full time - at which point he should be a very good backup for a season or two before taking over the reigns full time. He does a bunch of graphic submissions and is sitting on a bank right now of around $14M, so that is a pretty good number to take care of both weekly and seasonal training and indication that that can continue on for a few seasons at least. Very solid future in the net for Hamilton and Krryst is in no rush to leave, he should be able to fight regression until Jobin overtakes him.

Manhattan is in a very interesting situation with 2 high end prospects for goalies. S52 Beibitzhanov @Duff101 should be up full time next season and Name Redacted @Skeleton Party should have another 1 or 2 seasons down in the SMJHL for some games while the Rage goalies do their thing. Current Starter Peter Larson is also going to be able to figh regression for a few seasons pretty well if he so chooses, so Manhattan has a plethora of riches with no signs of slowing down. Maybe a decision to be made about personnel in their future, but having an asset is what is important and at this moment and in the future the Rage has 2 moveable assets (realistically 1). Both of these prospect goalies are putting on a very good showing and should be able to take over the team in a few seasons.

New England has an interesting mix. Future Starter Frans Eller @Ace has at most 1 more season in the SMJHL before moving up to the shl, and is already ahead of current backup Mike Hroch @Jabs. Hroch will probably maintain the backup role once Eller gets the pull up, and the Wolfpack are another team with a young Goaltender tandem of the future which should work out very well filling out a position that they won't need to worry about for a while.

Tampa Bay. Well their roster page needs to be fixed, but aside from that they have Leitner retiring, so let's look at their prospects. Jerry Huuveri @Jerppu still has eligibility in the SMJHL, but who knows he might be getting the call as soon as next season if Tampa choses to attempt at competing. He has 555 TPE already, so still a little bit to go to get to a solid starter numbers seen from other youngsters like Doyle and Del Vecchio, but he is at a good number. It does depend though, if Tampa goes for another tank, or even if they aren't actively trying to do as bad as humanly possible and roster their best possible lineup, they will be eating a ton of rubber and it may be better in the long run to protect a young rising goalie with an additional season in the SMJHL rather than bring him up early and shake their confidence. Definitely an immediate question for whoever the new management is, but they have an excellent future starter here - just a matter of when they get the full time call up.

Toronto has one of the best goalies in the league with Carpy currently and he is not going anywhere soon. This brings on the question of how do you replace one of the greatest the league has seen, and that's a question that is seasons too early as Carpy still has a lot of runway left to go. Well they answered that question last draft with the first pick of the second round by snagging Scoochie Stratton @honkerrs off the board. He was the first goalie taken, and for a good reason, scoochie has been fantastic so far and a little patience will pay off huge dividends here for both Scoochie and Toronto. Carpy is handling the load during the rebuild, and by the time Scoochie is ready for the league, he'll be an excellent backup - probably to the point where you play him in back to backs, not just the minimum games. He'll take over a very good team from Carpy a few seasons down the road assuming Toronto continues developing some of their younger stars.

The Calgary Dragons are in good shape. Vilde should be able to fight regression well for a few seasons before the reigns go over to Cale Amundsen @Wally. Now, Calgary paid a pretty big prospect price when Chicago sniped him right before their pick as they gave up an additional for just one spot in the draft, but they knew who they wanted and they got him and they have a solid future starter and star in the grooming, so although Chicago got a great return on this trade, I don't think they outright won it. Calgary got an amazing pick. Cale still has some time in the SMJHL as this is his second season, so probably another 2 full seasons down before coming up to split games for a season or two before being the solidified 40+ game starter for the future.

The Blizzard do not have any current prospects, but their starting goalie is also only S48 - so they have some time to go before they need to be concerned about looking to the next one. Not much else to say so keep this short and sweet.

Los Angeles is in a similar spot to Edmonton Goalie wise. They have an S49 starter in Knox Booth so just barely misses a call out for this edition of future watch. They have no prospects, but again I want to re-iterate that they are a few seasons before needing to force anything. They have the privilege to watch, maybe pick up a well progressing prospect from another team, or a good prospect goalie with a late pick if someone drops.

Minnesota has a wonderful starter in Markus Tegernako @KlusteR. They also have a good looking and earning prospect with Separa Borro @Lyezech. Borro will likely play out their 4 season SMJHL career before moving up. Kluster has done an exceptional job, I believe he joined after the SMJHL draft in S49 and he has put in a ton of work to become one of the top earners in the class. Minnesota has a great back stopper now, and of the future in Tegernako and they are developing a very solid second in Borro. They also have some good other pieces who will be hitting their SHL roster within the next few seasons, so they are looking like a bright spot all around.

New Orleans has both the top TPE goalie in the league, and a fantastic backup in Olli Saarinen Jr. @prettyburn. Cain remains a super high TPE option and the team is really rallying around that strength this season to be at the top of the West. I don't see any reason why slash would not be fighting regression aggressively for the next few seasons, meanwhile PB will continue to earn and even possibly be a higher tpe backup than a few teams starters for a couple seasons. NOLA is very strong in net both now and in the for seeable future.

San Francisco have a trio of young talent. Patrice Nadeau, and Ian Venables @Budgie who are effectively fighting for starts now and a stud who should be called up next season in Cillian Kavanagh @takethehorizon. I think Cillian will take over the starter when he goes up. He has a stupid high bank at almost $50 million in only his 4th season in the league Undecided and shows no signs of slowing down. Venables shot out of the gate like a cannon, but has slowed earning down a little bit, but regardless of that is keeping up and is on pace to play a fantastic #2 to Kavanagh for the future.

The Texas renegades got their goalie of the future with White Goodman @Jearim. Their current starter and only S51, Goodman will be around for a long time in Texas. As he is so young and basically counts as a prospect even though he was their SHL starter on a team that is making an excellent playoff push, Texas does not have any prospects at the moment and they are seasons away from needing to worry about that unless they find someone they want to groom as a backup.

Winnipeg as our final team have a very interesting situation. Top prospect Strom Chamberlain @Geekusoid is looking to take over the starting role next season - as he is currently at 788 TPE as of writing, with a $48 Million bank account - so he has the points, and he is a sure thing for max coaching to give him Max earner status. He will continue to improve over the next few seasons at a very strong rate and Winnipeg will follow as they are also a fairly young team with a lot of upswing.
Their other prospect is Richard Majors @Hefe4711 and just finishing up his second season in the SMJHL. He has recently gone into technically inactive territory, but the Jets are still in excellent hands with Strom waiting for the starter role.

Overall there are a few goalies who made their debut recently who are strong ROTY considerations and it is looking good for this upcoming season as well where we should see a lot more of Chamberlain, Kavanagh, Huuveri, Beibitzhanov names mentioned for starting roles as early as next season.

Also expand the regular season to 82 games so back ups get more chances to start

FHM to Goalies = Goalie weirdness in real life. So it checks out. If you can’t handle the un-understandable you shouldn’t be a goalie.
