PGS S54 Game #8 Colorado Raptors vs St.Louis Scarecrows
#1

Intro

December 18th

Welcome to St Louis Missouri where tonight the Colorado Raptors(5-4-1) come to town to face the hometown Scarecrows(3-7) who have struggled as of late. Between the pipes for Colorado is Jerry Huuveri and for St.Louis Nicolae Antonescu. With 5,839 people in the building we wait for the puck to drop and see if the Raptors can beat the struggling Scarecrows.

First Period

The puck is dropped and we are off. The Scarecrows come out hungry to play quickly getting a shot off on the first shift that is easily stopped by Jerry Huuveri. Unfortunately for the Scarecrows the energy that came out with leads to a hooking penalty by Eric Hudson. Colorado sets up well in the offensive zone but never gets a clear shot onto the net to challenge Antonescu and ends with the game still tied. Later in the period the Raptors take a slashing penalty on Ryan Rieley but the scarecrows have a few botched zone entries, resulting in little time spent in the Colorado zone. The period ends 0-0, the shots 4-7 in favour of the Scarecrows.

Second Period

The Raptors are the ones to come out stronger in the second, this results in Juli Schneider chipping the puck over the glass. In a different angle it looked like the puck did hit the glass which Juli tried to shoe the ref on the Jumbotron but for the overzealous defense the ref handed out a 10 minute misconduct. The Crows kill off the penalty and gather momentum, getting the puck back into the Raptor end, Cody Sprinka hit a Raptor that was not looking and took an exception as Chris Cerullo challenged him to a fight. It was a good fight with Sprinka winning the tilt but not after Cerullo got a few good punches in. The puck is dumped in and Danny Marston grabs it from the corner to find Jericson open at the point for a perfect one timer to beat Huuveri 4:01 into the period. Not long after both Carlos Brown(Tripping) and Ryan Rieley(Roughing) took penalties to give the Scarecrows a short 5 on 3 Powerplay which never got into the zone as they gave the puck up 3 different times. Later(13:44) in the period Barkov was able to spring Drunkenbird on a rush betting the Scarecrow defender to  get a clean shot betting Antonescu upstairs to tie the game at 1. At 17:10 William Lockwood put a soft shot on net and the third of the period for the crows to score and take the lead. The next shift the Raptors who had controlled most of the play stormed down and on a Svenson shot tied the game only 32 seconds later. Second would and 2-2 and shots 10-3/14-10 for the Raptors.

Third Period

The third period was a wide open affair with each time getting great chances but both goalies were perfect. Both teams played clean as the refs did not have to make any calls. Shots were 10-7/24-17 for the Raptors still tied 2-2.

Overtime

Overtime like always is high action, there was only one whistle in the first two minutes and that was a Bryce Turner penalty for interference. The Scarecrows looked to take advantage of this, getting 5 shots on the powerplay but Huuveri shut the door. Neither side would be able to find the back of the net, shots were 2-8/ 26-25 for the Raptors.

Shootout

The Scarecrows shoot first, Danny Marston miss. Raptors Sven Svenson miss. Kriss Darzins is the first goal scorer with a shot to the 5 hole. The next two shots miss leaving Mack Daddy with the Raptors fate on his stick, he delivers with a quick deke to score. Eric Hudson puts the pressure on the Raptors again scoring  but Carlos Brown ties it right up. The next round sees Bradley Barkov with the chance to win with a Grapefruit Lizard miss. Barkov comes down with speed and fakes out Antonescu to slide the puck around the goalie and into the net for the win.

3-2 Win for the Colorado Raptors

Comment One: Shootouts?
A game going to a shootout always means an unnatural close to a hockey game. It may beat the idea of having ties, but a shootout is not usually the way fans want to see games end. This one was no exceptions at after the five minutes of overtime an exciting early season matchup was closed with a shootout. This was a pretty good one, with Mack Daddy scoring a goal in the third frame to keep the game tied, and an even fourth frame. The winner was scored on the final shot in the fifth frame. Shootouts are not a good way to end hockey games.

Comment Two: Low SOG
The shots on goal battle was low and even. Neither team managed a large lead at the end of the 65 minutes, with the shots being 26-25, but a large amount coming in OT, where St. Louis took an 8-2 advantage due to their powerplay. In regulation shots where 24-18 for Colorado. Both team's defensive's did a good job preventing shots. Getting more shots on a goal is a good idea for both of these teams to focus on as the season continues. Shot totals under 20, like St. Louis had, is not going to lead to desirable results in the long run.

Comment Three: PIMs
St. Louis took 19 PIM in this game. Numbers like that are not a good way to play through the season. Juli Schnieder took a game miscount after a delay of game penalty and that really hurt both himself and the team. On the other side, Colorado took 13 PIM which is also too many. And there was almost none bigger than Bryce Turner being call for interference about two minutes into the OT period. Thankfully for him and Raptors, the PKers where able to keep St. Louis off the bored, but they surrendered 5 shots and that is not a way to play in overtime.

Comment 1: Turning Point: The Fight
Early in the second period Cody Spinka and Chris Cerullo fought, and that really got this game going: all four regulation goals came within the next 14 minutes of play. Tempers really started to flare, when Scarecrows winger Juli Schneider was awarded with a questionable puck over the glass penalty. Possibly provoked by Raptors players, Schneider was a bit too harsh on the refs, which got him a 10 minute misconduct. Shortly after that Spinka gave a nice clean hit to a Raptor defender, and Cerullo didn’t leave Spinka any other options but to drop his gloves. The fight was pretty even, but it certainly left both sides feeling agitated.

Comment 2: Action-packed 2nd Period
Only four seconds after the fight, Elwulf Jericson’s quick one-timer surprised Colorado goalie Jerry Huuveri. After the fight and the quick goal, the Scarecrows were better at controlling their emotions, while Raptors took a couple dumb penalties, with Carlos Brown first tripping Danny Marston in a very innocent looking counter attack, and Ryan Rieley taking down Eric Hudson while Hudson was just trying to get to the bench. Scarecrows weren’t able to capitalize on the power plays, and Simothy Drunkebird tied the game when 13:44 of the 2nd period was played. The game remained heated, but no more penalties were called in the period. The teams ended up exchanging goals and ending the period tied 2 to 2.

Comment 3: The Unsung Hero
The official stars went to Colorado winger Hiroshi Ohira (1A), St. Louis defender Elwulf Jericson (1G) and Colorado winger Sven Svenson (1G). While each of them played solid games, the jury seemed to miss Simothy Drunkebirds’s effort. The Raptors center not only scored a tying goal, but also had +2, 5 shot attempts, 1 blocked shot, and he won 13 of his 21 faceoffs. He also had more ice time than any other skater, including nearly four minutes of penalty kill. Overall, it was a great and consistent effort from Mr. Drunkebird, and it shouldn’t have been neglected by the stars jury.
