#16
(This post was last modified: 06-17-2020, 11:49 PM by Jumbobone19.)

Good Game/Bad Game
Steve Harringon for Newfoundland is the player who had the best game overall. Harrington started the scoring by netting one on the power play. He finished with a game rating of 79. He had 5 shots on goal, a blocked shot, and 2 takeaways during his 41 shifts. He also held his own in the defensive game by logging a score of 78.

Bobby Bergen for Carolina on the other hand had the worst game overall. Bergen scored a 47 game rating and a miserable 39 defensive game rating. He had a -1, 1 giveaway, and lost 7 faceoffs in the game. A game he probably would like to forget.

Selfless Player of the Game
The player who did what he could for the team in the game was Axel Foley for the Kraken. Foley Scored a defensive game rating of 76. He had 4 shots on goal, a blocked shot, and 1 hit. He spent 1 minute and 33 seconds on the penalty kill unit. The defenseman did his job, and cleared any puck in his area. The Kraken gave up 4 goals but Foley had a plus/minus of 0, which shows he did his part. He also did not give turn the puck over to the Berserkers, which is impressive since the Berserkers are a pretty aggressive team.

Berserkers Roll
Newfoundland Berserkers kept right on rolling. The Berserkers dominated the stat sheet. You name a stat, they probably lead in it. Newfoundland had more shots, hits, takeaways, faceoffs. And they had less penalties and giveaways. Thats just the tip of the spear. The Berserkers had 4 different goal scorers and 9 players get at least 1 point. Newfoundland had 3 power play opportunities and they converted on 2 of them. The goalie, Cale Amundsen, stopped 23 of 24 shots and had a save percentage of .958. The Berserkers won in all phases of the game today and the scoreboard showed it rightfully so.

Comment 1 - Player of the Game

Ay we back baby. Big matchup between the Carolina Kraken and the Newfoundland Bersekers. The kraken got smacked this game on bruh lmao. I will not be talking about any Kraken players cause they played like doo doo lol. Bad Team. Anyways today's player of the game is none other than Bersekers winger Ryuuji Minamnio. Guy had a legendary performance on the ice hokey rink tonight. He got not one, but TWO assists in this game. And if you think thats all he added to score sheet, you would be right. He had 0 goals. Amazing performance from Ryuji. Ryuiji is good man. Proud of you big guy.

Comment 2 - 3 Stars of the Game

3rd Star - Clean Andrei Kostitsysn, you amaze me every night. You are a bright shining star in this league, a fine young man. He showed up in this one. Scored a big goal for the Bersekers in the 2nd period. Really early on and helped set the tone for the rest of the game.

2nd Star - Juuka Timonen. Such a stud defenseman man. Very smooth and silky skating style and such a joy to watch.Scored his first goal of the season in the 2nd. Guy is like orange juice out there. love it. One of my favourite players to watch in the League.

1st Star - Ryuuji Minamino. Massive game from Ryuuji. Played his heart out as usual.

Comment 3 - Turning Point of the Game

Tonights turning point of the game came before puck drop. A first from this segment, usually it happens during the game. the turning point was the Kraken bus driver being bad. Because apparently the kraken didnt show up hahaha! Just kidding, just a light hearted joke lol. The actual turning point to this game came in the 1st period. The berserkers got themselves a nice early power play and boy did they take advantage of that opportunity given to them. Steve Harrington recieved a pass in the slot and smacked the bitch ass puck so hard it went flying into the net at an insane pace. Look at that pace on that man. Puck goes in and just like that bersekers have the lead. gg next.

Turning of the Tides
The Carolina Kraken were already down 1-0 heading into the first, and didn't have much going for them. I would go on to argue that the moment hope was lost for the Kraken was the third goal from Jukka Timonen. Earlier in the second period, the Kraken gave up a breakaway, which had been turned into a goal from Andrei Kostitsyn. They needed to answer back, and fast, but that breakaway really seemed to take a bit out of the players. They had been stuck in their end several times, and had trouble getting anywhere with an attack of their own. This leads to the third goal, in which the Kraken had been trying to force the puck out of their end again. It had been intercepted, and centered, and then put into the back of the net by Timonen. If the games totals in the game didn't give away that the Berserkers had control of the game, that play did.

Tonight's Underrated Performance
Frans Eller came into tonight looking pretty solid, and riding some good games to start the season off. While letting in 4 goals isn't necessarily a good thing, Eller was consistently under a barrage of shots that just could not be stopped by the Kraken. Eller's .900 SV% may not stand out, but when we take into consideration quality of chances he was facing, it is quite admirable. He was the reason this wasn't a 7-1 game, and gave the Kraken a chance until the final horn. Let us hope that the defensive corps representing the Kraken took him out for a burger that night, or even a steak.

The Three Stars

Your third star from tonight's game.. from the Newfoundland Berserkers.. Andrei Kostitsyn! Kostitsyn only managed to snag the one goal of his breakaway, but my oh my was it an important one. While it ended up being the game winning goal by the end of the game, it really gave Newfoundland the momentum they needed to take off!
Your second star from tonight's game.. from the Newfoundland Berserkers.. Jukka Timonen! Timonen also only grabbed one goal tonight, but as highlighted earlier it was quite important in shutting Carolina down! However don't think that was all he did, Timonen was buzzing around the ice tonight and made life hard for the Kraken.
And finally, your first star from tonight's game.. from the Newfoundland Berserkers.. Ryuuji Minamino! Minamino was a key contributor for the Berserkers tonight, with two assists. One coming from the opening goal, and the next helping out Timonen get that all so important third goal. Very strong game from Minamino tonight.

Comment 1: Three Stars Analysis
In this game versus the Carolina Kraken and the Newfoundland Berserkers the 3 stars were dominated by the Berserkers. As the first star we have Ryuu Minamino with 2 point game netting himself 2 assists. He assisted on the opening goal for the Berserkers and the third goal scored by Newfoundland putting them at a solid 3-0 up to that point in the game he was dishing the puck quite well this game. As the second star we have Jukka Timonen. Timonen scored himself one goal this game and it was the third goal, given that he is a defenseman and he scored it even strength this is quite the feat for him. Lastly as the third star we have (Clean) Andrei Kostitsyn. He scored the second goal of the game cementing Newfoundland's lead in this game, a very big play that changed the game.

Comment 2: Offensive Dominance
Leading up to this game the Carolina Kraken had 3 wins, 3 loses, and 1 overtime loss. On the other side we have the Newfoundland Berserkers who had 6 wins, 1 loss, and 1 overtime loss. As you can see At the start of this game you could probably accurately predict that New Foundland would win this game because of their records. However, we aren't here to discuss who won we are here to discuss how dominant the Berserkers were on offense. In the shots on goal category, Carolina had 24 shots while Newfoundland nearly doubled them with 40 shots on goal. This is reflected well in the score due to the fact that Newfoundland won the game 4-1. The shots on goal definitely won them this game as they didn't stand out in any other stats in particular.
(139 words)

Comment 3: Special Teams Usage
There were not very many penalties in this game; Carolina only had 3 penalties, 2 penalties in the first period and 1 penalty in the third and Newfoundland only had 1 penalty in the third. Either way special teams did play a big part in this game, with 3 of the 5 goals scored in this game being scored on the power play. Newfoundland converted on two of their three chances, once in the first period and once in the third period. Carolina Converted on their only powerplay chance, and managed to score their lone goal in the third period.

Berserkers stay hot
The Newfoundland Berserkers came into tonight 5-1-1, 11 points. That's an impressive start to the year, and they came in looking to continue that trend and keep their place on top of the standings. With 4 different players recording goals, and 9 people putting up points on the score sheet, the Berserkers continued on that trend and finished the night 4-1 and picking up 2 points. Goaltender Frans Eller only let in one goal tonight and improved his record to 3-1-1. The Berserkers put on an offensive showing for the home crowd who went home tonight watching one of the stronger showings on this chilly October evening.

Godzilla
Ryuuji Minamino is starting to prove himself this year, and this game is no different. He's becoming a leader on this team and his first star of the night is only proof the to rest of the league that he's going to make an impact on the score sheet this year. He was a critical part in the Berserkers first and third goals tonight, providing the primary assist on both tallies. Those are good for his 3rd and 4th assists of the year, putting him in top spots of the team. His silky mits are only one of the reasons the Berserkers were able to take a commanding lead in standings this year.

Carolina's Road Show
This year has seen Carolina put in a tough position with their 5 games on the road, including two stops in Newfoundland. After tonight's game they end their road trip with a 2-3 record. Ultimately they lost both games on the isle of Newfoundland, seeing both games end in a 4-1 loss. Moving forward after this, the Kraken get a much needed rest at home in Carolina where they see their Eastern Rivals, the Berserkers making the flight down the coast. Expect that game to be a big game for Carolina as they're looking for revenge for these last two games. They hope a quick rest in their own beds and the support of the Kraken Loyal will give them edge they're desperately searching for.

Comment 1 - Working Hard and Hardly Working

This definitely was a tale of two teams, as the Berserkers really established themselves as a top franchise in the SMJHL, while Carolina fell a bit flat. Newfoundland dominated this game beginning to end, in shots, special teams, and even equal strength play. With everything the Kracken was trying to prove, they did not do it against one of the top dogs. While Newfoundland is an exceptionally deep team, it's more than concerning to see the Kracken barely trying until the last period, where they managed to score on the power play, but it was too late by that point to salvage the game.

Comment 2 - Big PP

If this game had anything, it had a LOT of power-plays and successful ones at that. Newfoundland had two successful power plays, while Carolina had one to their name. It's very interesting to see so many successful power plays, but it really goes to show the quality of play at hand here. Newfoundland definitely got the chance to show off more, as they received 3 power-play opportunities (2/3, 66% success rate), compared to the one by Carolina (1/1, 100% success rate). This was a showcase for both power-play units, and both performed well at the end of the day.

Comment 3 - Crystal Ball

Looking at the results from this game, it becomes clear that this was a good prediction for how the Berserkers would function for this season, taking the top of the eastern conference. With the Kracken, they improved immensely from this game, being the 2nd seed in the east. Since then the Kracken figured out the Berserkers, taking more wins against them, including an 8-3 pantsing that really questioned the Berserker's staying power and potential in beating the cup-favorite Kelowna. In short, it was a sign of what was to come from Newfoundland, and a learning step for Carolina, and both teams learned for the better.

Newfoundland Killing It (106 Words)

The Newfoundland Berserkers come into this game with a record of 6-1-1-, good for 13 points, and a spot a top the league. While the Kraken are a respectable opponent, sitting at 3-3-1, with 7 points, they simply can’t keep up with the Berserkers. Newfoundland overwhelmed Carolina in this one, with a whopping 40 shots (to Carolina’s 24), and still managed to be the more physical of the two. It was a truly dominant performance from the Berserkers, who will look to continue in this form moving forward, with the goal of finishing at the top of the standings, for that 1st seed in the playoffs.

Penalties Prove Costly (117 Words)

Special teams played a big factor in this game, with the Berserkers opening up the scoring in the 1st on the powerplay. While they would score a couple of even strength goals in the second period, the third period would find them scoring again, on just their 3rd powerplay of the night. Just 6 minutes later, Carolina would then score their first goal of the night, on their first powerplay. With Newfoundland going 2/3, and Carolina going 1/1, teams were severely punished for taking penalties. While these teams powerplay efficiency is impressive, if they are going to look for sustained success, they need to improve their penalty kill, which, for both teams, was awful on the night.

Newfoundland’s Top Guns Show Up (121 Words)

The Berserkers had their best players show up tonight. Ryuuji Mimamino picked up two assists, Clean Andrei Kostitsyn scored his third goal of the season, PBJ Souppan had a helper, Tinka Jutlia had an assist, and Matthew Forester also had an assist. Mimamino, Souppan, Jutlia, and Forester all have 4 assists on the season, which has been a crucial part to Newfoundland’s success. With so many different players picking up points, the depth that is on this team is really on display and could be a big reason for them leading the league now and moving forward. As long as players like Kostitsyn are there to finish off these guys passes, it looks as though the Berserkers will be just fine.

Comment 1: Steve Harrington (127 words)
Steve Harrington had one of the most consistently great games this season. He not only showed some great offensive ability, ending up scoring 1 goal on 5 shots. He also showed some great defensive ability while playing over 21 minutes. 2 Takeaways, a blocked shot and some really solid defensive work earns him the 2nd highest DGR on the team,. and 3rd in the entire game. Couple that with his 79 OGR which was the best in the game, and you got yourself a superstar performance. Harringtons 30 points on the year might seem low, but he is one of the highest rated players in the entire league, being top 20 in both OGR and DGR. This performance really shows what kind of solid player he is.

Comment 2: Frans tried his best (127 words)
40 shots on net. 4 went past him. And despite that, Frans Eller should be somewhat satisfied with his own performance tonight. He saved some really high quality chances in this game, and was for the most part left to his own accord. 3 players on the Kraken posted a DGR above 70, and only an additional 2 above 65. Despite that, I don't think he can blame his team mates either. They blocked a total of 19 shots throughout the game against the best team in the league, a feat almost on the level of Maine Timber. The expectations coming into this game was a closely knit fight between 2 teams, and Frans Eller made sure to make it a game as best as he could.

Comment 3: 2 of the best (182 words)
Ryuuji Minamino is seen as one of the top 5 players in the entire league. With only one game left to play, he has already breached the mythical 50 points limit for his Newfoundland Berserkers. And it was in games like this that he truly shined. His consistent output of points has been a huge reason why NL find themselves so high up the table. 2 Assists today for the first star of the game was yet another magnificent performance out of the Japanese god. On the other end, Jimmy Wagner had a tough one. He did assist Dwight Knight for at a sympathy goal, but overall he had a bad night. A rare occurrence for Jimmy who as of writing this is 2nd in points, only beaten by Minamino. Wagners season can not be described in any other way than resounding success. But sadly for him and his team, he amongst others did not show up to play offensive hockey today. Not like they can't be blamed, very few teams have managed to beat Newfoundland this season at their own game.

Comment 1: Pierre's Monster
In a one-sided affair in which the Newfoundland Berserkers showed their dominance over the Carolina Kraken, one player stood out in particular. While he ended the night with a single point - a goal to open the contest - Steve Harrington is tonight's monster! While Harrington wasn't named a star of the game and contributed to fewer goals than teammates like Ryuuji Minamino, the veteran was a key piece for the Berserkers this evening all over the ice. In addition to opening the scoring, Harrington kept Frans Eller busy all night with 5 shots on goal. Harrington also gave up the body to block a shot, and stole the puck from the opposition twice. Harrington played important minutes and was integral in keeping the momentum going for the Berserkers all game long.

Comment 2: Goalie Battle
Hockey games are made more interesting by compelling match-ups, whether it be between star players, or between a shutdown line and the opposition's top scorer. One of the best storylines hockey can offer, though, is an elite goaltending battle. In any game between Carolina and Newfoundland you have just that, with Frans Eller and Cale Amundsen squaring off. Heading into this one, though, neither Amundsen nor Eller were off to incredible starts, although Eller would be considered the hotter of the two goalies at puck drop. That didn't last long, though, as Amundsen proved that last season was no fluke, turning aside 23 of 24 shots for a .958 SV% on the evening. Eller could hardly be blamed for his team's loss despite letting in 4 goals, as his defence did little to help matters when they allowed 40 shots on goal. While Eller performed admirably in a lopsided game, Amundsen put on a great performance and did all his team needed to deliver the W, and that's why Amundsen was victorious in this competitive goaltending battle.

Comment 3: Berserkers Forwards Keep Rolling
The Newfoundland Berserkers were expected to have a high-powered offence heading into the season, but few could have expected the hot start a number of their forwards have had. With contributions coming from multiple lines, it's hard to pick a player who has been most responsible for the Berserkers success, but there are a couple of candidates, and each was instrumental in tonight's victory over the Kraken! (Clean) Andrei Kostitsyn was the third star tonight, scoring the game winning goal in the second period. That was Kostitsyn's third goal of the year, moves him into the top of the league leaderboard for goals scored through the first 5 games of the year. However, perhaps even more impressive has been the play of Ryuuji Minamino, whose two assists on the night earned him first star honours while catapulting into first in league points scoring with 7 points in 5 games. Teammates Kostitsyn, as well as Steve Harrington and PBJ Souppan are not far behind though, with 5 points apiece! With such high octane offence, it's no surprise the Berserkers were victorious tonight against a Kraken side that has been struggling to get anything going.

Comment 1: Off the Chain

The Newfoundland Berserkers put on a clinic tonight shooting 40 shots in 3 periods and completely barraging the Carolina Kraken. The Berserkers took full control in the second period and did not look back. Putting up 20 shots in this period alone and getting two goals from (Clean) Andrei Kostitsyn and Jukka Timonen, With these two goals the Newfoundland squad pulled confidently ahead at 3-0 and didn't look back. Finishing the game 4-1 and putting themselves at 6-1-1, with 13 points, and proving they are the class of the SMJHL early this season. One of the most talented squads with some of the best young players should have an easy trek to the playoffs and are likely the favorites to win it all this year. This game was just a microcosm of the absolute firepower the raging Berserkers have in waiting.

Comment 2: Statement from Newfoundland Color Analyst

Watching this game was the first time that it really clicked for me that Newfoundland could be the team to beat this season. The players were out there flying and everyone seemed in sync. Carolina might be struggling a bit right now but they are another of the top teams in the SMJHL and we completely dominated them on the ice today. I think there is nothing but clear skies for the Berserkers. Their star players are among their best. The goaltending is easily the best in the league and they can dominate on the face-off dot. This team is going places and I feel excited and honored to be able to go on the ride with these kids this season.

Comment 3: Fan Reaction

After the 4-1 win for the Newfoundland Berserkers we sent one of our interns out into the crowd to hear what the fans had to say about the win. Most of the fans were excited about the win but we ran into a few that believed the Newfoundland squad could have put up even more points. "(Clean) Andrei Kostitsyn is our hero. The boy should have put in 5 goals tonight. He was on fire with the shots! LET HIM GO HARD!" The consensus seems to be that the Berserkers fanbase is super hyped about the way the team has been playing and is hoping to they get the chance to see their young players lead the league and continue their way to a championship title in S54!

The Real Three Stars

1st Star: Who was actually awarded? NL RW Ryuuji Minamino (G: 0, A: 2)
Who should have been awarded? Minamino is a solid choice

He got the primary assist both on Harrington’s powerplay tally in the first period, and also on Timonen’s 3-0 goal in the second period. Minamino played a solid overall game, and also had 4 shot attempts. He also had one blocked shot, one hit and TKA/GVA 1/1. Minamino looked very dangerous every time he had the puck, and we can definitely expect him to be a point per game player this season. He’s a very versatile offensive weapon.
(102 words)

2nd Star: Who was actually awarded? NL LD Jukka Timonen (G: 1, A: 0)
Who should have been awarded? Timonen deserves this one

He scored a beautiful goal in the second period and was an offensive threat throughout the game, having five shot attempts, three of which on goal. He also had one blocked shot and TKA/GVA of 2/1. He also got, deservedly, most ice time out of NL players in the game. His play was a key reason why NL was able to maintain puck possession and control the tempo of the game. Looks like Timonen will be continuing right where he ended his great rookie year.
(108 words)

3rd star: Who was actually awarded? NL RW (Clean) Andrei Kostitsyn (G: 1, A: 0)
Who should have been awarded? There would’ve been many great options. Harrington, Souppan, Amundsen, for example.

(Clean) Andrei Kostitsyn scored a goal, but he really struggled defensively tonight, and his effort was far from what he can do at his best. RW Steve Harrington, on the other hand, scored a goal and was very engaged for the whole game. He had 6 shot attempts, 5 of which on goal. He also logged TKA/GVA of 2/1. RD PBJ Souppan had a great game too, having one assist and 6 shot attempts, 4 of which on goal. Cale Amundsen would’ve been a reasonable choice too. Even though NL had the game in control for the most part, Carolina had their occasional chances. These kinds of games are always tough for goalies, but Amundsen managed to only allow one goal.
