We in the SHN were having a conversation the other day about SHL money, mainly how some people just fly up the charts and earn a ton. It got me thinking: What is the average bank of an SHL’er? How many users have over 100M in the bank? How did those users earn their 100M? If you have ever thought those questions and more, you are in the right place! I did some semi-investigative journalism within the bank and individual users profiles to find some of this out.

Some high-level things that I picked out:

-         There are 1335 registered bank accounts within the bank

-         The average sum in each of those bank accounts is $15,531,538.07. Removing the top bank balance in the SHL (Spoilers) dropped this average by 200K

-         There are only 46 bank accounts in the negative as of this writing

-         The total sum of all the money in the SHL is over 20 billion dollars. Specifically it is $20,719,071,785.00

-         There are only 23 users at or over the 100M mark. This surprised me, as I had the impression that it would be more

-         The 1% (or top 1% of the users in terms of bank balance) consist of 13 users who have just under 2.3B between them, or 11% of the money. This is much better than the world as a whole, where the top 1% owns over 50% of the world’s wealth

-         1% of the total SHL bank is less than each of the top two users in terms of bank have. The top user actually has 1.8% of the SHL’s money alone

Now onto some analysis. I will be going through each of the users with >$100M to their name and finding out how they got their money – at least generally. I will try and focus on how users made the majority of their money. In some cases, there were two or more pretty equal sources, and those users have their own category. There were 5 users between 90-100M that just missed the cut… so they better get to some media to see their names back up there!

UPDATING

It is a tale as old as time: Updaters getting paid massive sums for their little work, it may as well be in the rulebook. But is it that true? Surprisingly to myself, only 4 users stood out among the SHL’s most wealthy as people who had made their wealth primarily from updating. That’s not to say some of the other users here haven’t made some of their money off updating, but it wasn’t the sole resource of their riches. Here are the users I identified as Updating tycoons:

-         Ml002 – 115M. The former updating co-head, ml might fall into a few of the other categories here, but his main source of income that lead to his impressive bank was updating

-         SpartanGibbles – 117M. Similar story to ml here. I found a little bit of media that contributed to Gibbles fortune. I would say his high updating compensation is really just the league figuring out a way to pay him for his TD recipes

-         Bk1689 – 144M. Probably one of the more prolific updaters on site, BK has amassed his fortune in only a few seasons of hard work. 99M of his 144M total has come from his last 3 seasons of updater pay. When the S54 check hits, bk could once again jump up the charts in the bank rankings.

-         Tomen – 187M. Tomen is in a similar boat to BK, having updated for a while. His rise in earnings has not been as steep as bk’s however. Tomen has also been a bit of a gambler - having hit the last two parlay’s for 15M apiece. Bad news for Tomen is that he didn’t win S54’s – so he will have to earn the last 13M to get to 200 a different way. Edit: I was wrong

BEING OLD AS DIRT

This category was a catch all for a lot of the members of the 100M club that have been around so long that it is almost impossible to find out how they got their money without having been there. There were several that had very short bank sheets – so short that I could find their starting bank balance from the switch to an automated system. A note about some of these members (and others on the list) is that when some users aren’t spending on training and coaching (not fighting regression, IA, etc) they can keep piling up the $ without doing much extraordinary. We run into a few of those in this category.

-         Jogurtaa – 104M. Jogurtaa seems to have been involved in a variety of things – including some graphics and a podcast – but hasn’t been doing too much to add to the total recently. Their stacks of cash are mostly due to earnings in the far past

-         Weirzy13 – 110M – last seen on site around 2 years ago in 2017, Weirzy hasn’t been earning since then, obviously. It is a genuine mystery how he earned it, unless some of the other Old as Dirt members care to shed some light ?

-         Leafs4ever – 111M – Leafs is one of the aforementioned users who hasn’t been spending all that much in recent seasons… which has lead to his bank inflating big time. Since the bank switch over last year, Leafs has piled up an additional 67M of wealth from contracts, job pay and fantasy/casino earnings. He will have to earn a bit more aggressively to keep a part of the 100M club with his new recreate likely eating up a ton of cash

-         Winter is Coming – 128M. The former SMJHL commissioner, WIC, has been around for over 5 years on the site. That is old enough for me to qualify WIC as “old as dirt”. This is also due to there not being one clear obvious source of his income. He did a decent amount of media, so it is likely there that he earned his fortune

-         Velevra – 164M. The last of the primarily “old as dirt” members. Velevra misses out on the top 5 by about 20M and sits a solid 6th. Velevra has been an IIHF commissioner for what seems like forever (based on old posts) so a mix of job pay, media, and being really old plays in here

GRAPHICS GURUS
Here we see some of the most talented graphic artists in the league – and it is no wonder. Seasons upon seasons of weekly sig submissions pays off, and these users are some of the best and most consistent of them all.

-         Rum_ham – 104M. Rum_ham probably also qualifies as an old as dirt member, but when going through his bank sheet, it is obvious he earned his money through graphics. The name check works too, as RH is wide known as a premier member of the graphics community.

-         JSS – 133M. JSS is another OG that has been creating slick graphics for many seasons. He is also a graphics grader – which is a fairly lucrative job itself. His money has been further enhanced by his player being in the later stages of his career – allowing him to pile up the money without a lot of expenditure.

-         King – 163M. The infamous King made his money in graphics. From what I hear, he was sorta all over the site – jobs and media also played a role in his money making. As his influence is heavily felt in the graphics section of the site, he is included here.

-         Carpy48 – 185M. Want to be rich? Be good at graphics. That is Carpy’s secret it seems. He is also a very dedicated member of the site, including his position as Graphics head. His weekly submissions and graphics grading/head pay has helped him amass the 5th highest bank on the site and only 4ish million away from 3rd.

-         Wasty – 371M. What in the actual fuck. 371M is insane, and an unfathomable amount of money on the site. Wasty is obviously the top earner in the league, and a whopping 159M separates him from 2nd place. That 159M would rank 8th overall in the league, which is insane. The 159M gap is the same as the difference between 2nd and 80th. Wasty is also old as dirt, and that certainly helps with his wealth accumulation, but his graphics dominance has earned him the majority of the money in his bank

MEDIA MOGULS
This category was a little hard to quantify, as almost no one with >100M only did media for that bank. This group is mostly due to people who are or used to be extremely prevalent in the media section and earned a lot of fat stacks there. Three of the four were mostly (or entirely) active in the past and not as media dominant at the moment.

-         Adamantium – 135M. Formerly one of the podcast moguls of the SHL, adamantium has a ton of threads created in the media section, and back when he was active, earned his main money there. His IA contracts have helped top him up to this level of bank, however

-         ArGarBarGar – 139M. AGBG dabbled in many areas of the site – including graphics and jobs. Mostly however, he was a solid media producer who earned a decent amount of money

-         Eggy216 – 189M. The former SHL commissioner, Eggy spent a large portion of his later time on site was spent in his commissioner job. But early on in his career, he was big into the media. Eggy is yet another old as dirt member of the site, but Luke tells me he was a big media guy, so he is ranked here.

-         Luketd – 212M. The second ranked bank on the site, luke is a true media mogul (and he is not* paying me to say that). Luke has his hands all over the site, including many jobs, site work, and the occasional updating. I considered putting him in the Mix section, but the amount of media work Luke has done is legendary. Between big projects like Trade histories and the SHN, Luke just keeps earning and producing big media pieces.
*Luke totally paid me to say this

MIXED BAG EARNERS
The last group here is really a mixed bag. These users are either prolific in many areas, or it is really not clear or evident where they made their riches.

-         Gaby – 100M. Gaby is one of the users that is a bit of a mystery. With 100M right on the nose, they just made the cut-off for this list. Gaby does not have a lot of entries into their bank since the switch over, but did have some casino/fantasy earnings several seasons ago. Gaby also accumulated IA contracts over the last little while, which bumped them over the top to 100M.

-         Dextaria – 104M. Dex joined the site in March and is already over 100M. Let that sink in. With only 23 users over 100M, he has absolutely put a blitz on the banking system. Dex has been all over the place, earning money with impressive graphics, lots of media, and jobs – including his recent promotion to SHL budget head. He is only going to stampede up this list, and seeing as the separation between his position on the list (20th) and the top 1% (13th) is only 24M, he will be there in no time.

-         DrunkenTeddy – 106M. The man, myth, and legend, DrunkenTeddy has earned his wealth over a variety of areas in the site. He has contributed a lot in the terms of site work, and has earned a pretty penny from the casino. He also used to do some graphics back in the day, so I am including that on the list of how he has accumulated fat stacks.

-         StamkosFan – 116M. This is one of the more mysterious entries onto the list for me. I know StamkosFan has his fingers in a lot of pies – jobs galore – and is no stranger to media either – but this level of wealth is really high for someone not in updating or graphics at all.

-         Nhamlet – 132M. The second newest member on this list, Nhamlet joined the site back in January. He has made a large chunk of his wealth from updating, but it felt weird to pidgenhole him there, as he also has a immense presence in the media section, especially the SMJHL media section. Cranking out lots of 5-10M articles, Nhamlet has shot up the board as of late.

And there you have it! How the SHL’s richest users made their millions. I will include a quick ranking of the users just for summaries sake:

It's time consuming more than difficult. The hardest thing is deciphering the odd update thread that makes 0 sense
