[BHN] Breaking down the S55 draft (2x draft media)

Registered Posting Freak An expansion draft is always exciting, confusing, and has emotions running high. This year 10 players from existing teams were left unprotected and moved to either the Nevada Battleborn or Quebec City Citadelles, with each team getting 5 existing players. I created a sheet that has teams rosters as of 7/15, organized by position. I went through each team afterwards and analyzed the players that left in the expansion and then the needs that were met by the S55 Draft. The way the draft is set up is a bit confusing with QCC winning this year's lottery and picked 1st overall, and Nevada picked 4th. They then picked in the 7th and 8th spots respectively the rest of the draft.
Anaheim Outlaws
Anaheim is looking good going into this draft with 20/23 players signed. The two big needs for them right now were RW and RD. They’ve got about 4-6 players who will probably be playing their last year in the ‘J, so getting a few good picks this year will make a difference in the long run. The outlaws had 8 picks in this year's draft, and after losing in the Four Star Cup final, they pick in the 11th spot in the first round, and then the 9th spot in every round after that. Expansion Draft loss: Juan Hunna-Pussent Draft Picks: 18. Edward Teach G @biggestshlchad 21. “Long” John Donair RW @GCool 38. Karl Shaufelberger RD - @dylanjj37 39. Thomas Rose RW - @bigbluex02 81. Supun Buddhadasa RW @sedinery Conclusion: Anaheim isn’t losing too much in Hunna-Pussent, they haven’t been active on the site for about a month now and are sitting at 249 TPE. They used 5 of their draft picks, and filled the holes they needed. 2 RD and 2 RW plus the biggest Chad on the site apparently, much to Bork’s disapproval. When it’s all said and the done the Outlaws drafted well, a few recreates, a few first gens. Congratulations new Outlaws. Anchorage Armada
The Armada have a total of 19/23 players on their pre-draft roster. Their biggest holes, similar to Anaheim are at RW and RD, where they have 2 natural players in each position. The Armada did sign two DFA players right after the trade deadline, who helped fill both of the holes they had. Anchorage kept all 10 of their picks this year, so they'll have a good chance to fill some holes, with a few inactives, they weren't desperate for depth this year, but will need it moving forward. We could see the Armada drop those IA’s to make room for the upcoming draftees. The Armada picked in the 6th spot in the 1st round, and then in the 4th spot every round after that. Expansion Draft loss: Sven Gunnar The draftees: 10. Vladimir Petrov RW @Muford 16. Slava Petrov LW @ckroyal92 28. Michael Withecheck LD@sakrosanct 40. Halldor Ragarsson LW @Sleepy 51. Coling Fuhr LW @Confusion Conclusion: Anchorage management isn’t concerned about losing Sven, as there was an obvious rift between them. Sven is sitting at 247 TPE, and could make a huge comeback in QCC and shove it in every one’s face. Anchorage was the most active this draft, making two trades, one with Detroit in the 1st, giving up their 6th OA and receiving the 10th OA, 51st OA, and S56 3rd rounder. Picking up 3 LW, 1 LD, and 1 RW, the Armada are now flush with LW, so we’ll probably see a few of those guys switch over and play on the right side. A big upside to the Armada draft is the addition of two Petrovs in the first and second rounds. Expect big things from those brothers. Carolina Kraken
This year's Four Star Cup champions are in a good spot for the next 2 seasons or so, and should stay just as competitive. They went into the draft with 20/23 players signed, and have 2 IA players. They need support at RW with Jimmy Wagner being their only active player, they also need some more depth at LD, and at G with rookie Blunt Man filling the starting position. The Kraken could see maybe 4 players making the jump next year, so it’ll be crucial to pick smart this year. Trading away their 1st, 2nd, 5th and 6th rounders, they picked up picks in the 2nd, 3rd, and 6th round and end up with 9 total picks in the draft. The Kraken pick in the 10th spot after the 2nd round Expansion Draft loss: Zelma Zuntnere Moritz Muller (Traded to NBB for protecting one extra player) Draftees: 5. Aleksander Kozlov C @FlappyGiraffe 27. Adrian Ayers RW @gordieboom 46. Grape Fruit LW @canes2112 61. Ragnar-Alexandre Ragnarsson-Trembley G @LarryTheMVP Conclusion: Carolina is losing a great player in Zelma, who was important in their run up to the cup. Moritz went IA shortly after the last SMJHL draft, so no big loss there and more importantly, opens up a roster spot. The day prior to the draft, the Kraken traded away Mike Lee, 18OA and 34OA to Detroit to get themselves the 5th OA pick and got their guy with Aleksander Kozlov. Picking up RART at Goalie, they’ve got two solid netminders who we could see play in tandem this year. Colorado Raptors
The Raptors entered the draft with 21/23 players signed on their roster, however they have 2 IA players they might be looking to release to make room for some depth. Colorado is flush with RD and RW, and the most obvious need for them is LD, and Goalie. Only Barkov and Huuveri are active in those respective positions. They’re in an interesting position this draft, where they’ll potentially only have a few players move up to the SHL. They currently only have 3 players above 600 TPE (technically 2, but Huuveri is only 9 TPE away, so i counted it) The Colorado Raptors are flush with picks this draft with 11, they picked up a 7th rounder from Detroit. They'll pick 7th OA in the 1st and in the 5th spot every round after that. Expansion Draft loss: Ryan Rieley Draftees: 7. Rock Strongo C @Leafs4ever 17. Marcel Laflamme G @HydroRaven 29. WIlliam Hunt C @DachtorFeelgood 41. Eero Makinen JR. RW @mcgriddleluver 53. Josh Dolphin C @d0lph1inb0y 65. Tyrone Banks G @hockeytrb99 Conclusion: Losing a player like Rieley is a huge hit for Colorado, sitting at 285 TPE right now, he should be maxed out at 350 before the season starts. The Raptors chose to stick with their core D group at the moment, and will have a few guys play on their opposite sides. They reinforced their forwards corps with 3 C, 1 RW, and picked up 2 Goalies along the way. The Raptors are looking good, but are going to have to make some decisions on who actually makes the roster on any given night. Detroit Falcons
The Falcons are in desperate needs of some depth this year, much like the Timber were last year. They only have 15/23 players signed going into the draft, with 1 IA player, they have a lot of holes they need to fill. Most obviously is LD where they have no current players signed. They need some depth players at LW and RW as well. The Falcons traded away their 3rd and 7th round picks, but were able to secure another 4th rounder, so they'll have 9 picks this year. If the circumstances happen where they drop their IA, and lose one player to the expansion and have all their draftees sign they'll have 22/23 players on the roster. They may be looking to make a trade to help bolster that number. Expansion Draft loss: James Kimanje The Draftees: 6. Evangelos Giannopoulos LD @JSS 11. Yngve Simonsson LW @JumpierPegasus 34. Daedalus James C @littleb 35. Oliver Setzinger RD @EricC11 57. Valtteri Aalto G @drodger91 63. Andrew Iaonnou LW @Andynoog Conclusion: An interesting pick in Kimanje, a player that is active in other sim leagues, but not as much here in the SHL. I don’t think Detroit will be missing out too much here. Detroit was able to make some key trades leading up the draft and picked up both Kelowna’s and Anaheim’s first round picks. They’ve got a great mix here of first gens and recreates that should help add some much needed depth to their roster. Kelowna Knights
Kelowna, who finished 1st in the West are in a pretty decent spot going into the draft with 19/23 players. Their only real holes are at LD and RW. With a few players looking at their potential last seasons in the 'J, they'll want to make sure they're drafting smart and getting the right players. The Knights were fairly inactive with their picks this year, trading away only their 6th rounder and have 9 picks going into the draft. They pick 9th OA and will pick in the 11th spot after that. In the expansion draft, Kelowna traded away their 2nd round pick (24th OA) to QCC for 2 player protection. Expansion Draft loss: Stan Q. Next Draftees: 23. Kynwyl Peace RW @Shmurph 36. Patrik Money LW @Mooney 48. Mikhael Petrov D @to12143 60. Logan Wong LW @Wongy 84. Elias Bieri LW @emmepep 96. Alexsander Rokokstkov G @RenoJacksonHS 108. Ptoughniegh Bnugnuart LW @Typhoon1313 Conclusion: I believe the QCC mentioned in the expansion draft that they played with Stan Q. in other sim leagues, and while Stan hasn’t been the most active here, this pick up could prove to be the spark that gets this team going. A strong GM and player connection can bolster a good team and LR. But anyways, Kelowna drafted 7 players this year, 4 LW, 1 RW, 1 D, 1 G. This will make the current players really fight for a roster spot. Maine Timber
Maine had a helluva draft last year, having finished the year with 12 rookies, they had by far the largest rookie class. Their biggest holes are going to be at LW and LD. While they have a plethora of RD and RW, they'll probably be wanting to fill some of the spots with players playing on their natural sides. The Timber were active and generous with the new Quebec City Citadels and traded away their 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th round picks leaving them with only 5 picks this year. This shouldn't be a big concern for them, as they pick 3rd OA and in the 2nd spot in every round after the 2nd. Expansion Draft loss: Alexander Roach Draftees: 3. Lucas Johansson LW @JR95 14. Calvin Hobbes C @krazko Conclusion: The only beans that got spilled during this draft, were beans that were already tipped over and falling to the ground anyways. It was already predetermined by the expansion draft rules that Alexander Roach would be heading to QCC as Faelax is one of their GMs. Of course, Maine will miss Roach on the team, but there wasn’t really much choice here. Tied for the smallest draft class of the season goes to the Timber, only picking up Johansson and Hobbes, 1 recreate, and 1 first gen. Not a big surprise here that the Timber didn’t try and get any more picks in this draft, they have over half their team drafted in the past two years and want to cultivate that locker room culture. Newfoundland Berserkers
The Newfies are another team in a really good spot to be competitive over the next couple seasons. They've got minor holes at RD and LW, but have some world class players already on the roster. 19/23 roster spots filled means it'll be competitive for draftees to make the team. The Berserkers have a whopping 12 picks in the draft this year, including 3 in a row in the 6th round. This is definitely more than they need with really only 4-5 roster spots to fill. During the expansion draft, the first person to be drafted is Niccolo Livius, and about two minutes later, he was traded back to NLB in exchange for their S55 1st round (9th OA) and $2MM in cap space. That left NLB with 11 picks to start the draft. Expansion Draft loss: Niccolo Livius -> Draftees: 15. Jonas Kahnwaki RD @Festinator 31. Vaseline Podcalzone RW @bdu754 Conclusion: A surprise start to the expansion draft, but one that makes complete sense. The Berserkers are flush in picks and going all in this year to try and win the Four Star Cup. The only other team that drafted only two players, the Berserkers are already in a prime spot to go all the way and had no need to big draft heavy this year. They did draft one of the better named players in this draft class Vaseline Podcalzone. St. Louis Scarecrows
St. Louis has 19/23 roster spots filled before this year's draft. Their major holes are on natural lefties with needs at LW and LD, where they only have 3 players who play naturally on the left side. They've got a few players who can fill in, but I'm sure they prefer a bit more balance The Scarecrows have 12 picks in this year's draft, they traded away their 2nd to Carolina only to receive the Kraken's 2nd as well, and they'll have 2 picks in the 5th and 6th rounds. Another team that will have a lot of competition to get roster spots come opening day. Expansion Draft loss: Leonids Balzams Draftees: 2. Xavier Doom C @JKortesi81 22. Zbynek Dobrovsky RW @iStegosauruz 42. Jimmy Dekens LD @monkey10pts 59. Matty David LD @mattysota 66. Bud Weiser LD @budweiser 69. Jingle McMonkeynuts RW @patrick328_ Conclusion: As the real first player on the Battleborn, I think this is a great pick up by them. Leonids will be missed in St. Louis, but they’ve got plenty of picks to help round their team out this year and still be competitive. Carolina did a fantastic job in this years draft, drafting Xavier Doom 2nd OA and a plethora of picks in some of the later rounds. The Scarecrows drafted 6 players in this draft, 3 LD, 2 RW, and 1 C. Again another prime choice for one of the best names in the draft, Jingle McMonkeynuts and aptly going 69th OA, nice. Vancouver Whalers
Vancouver already has 21/23 spots filled, and only one IA player currently filling in the 3rd goalie spot. Their biggest holes are at Center and LD. While they have plenty of LW that can fill in the C spots, and 5 RD who fill out their D corps, they'll be looking to add some depth and support in ways of natural players. With 9 picks in the draft this year, including two first rounders, they picked up Carolina's 1st rounder and will pick the 2nd and 12th OA spots and and in the number 1 spot after that, they're bound to get some quality players who will be difference makers for them as they look make some major improvement after finishing last in the league last year. Expansion Draft loss: Sammy The Goon Koa Draftees: 8. Dee Centerman IV LW @grok 12. KnockedOut ByOvechkin RW @ddrector 13. Sarah Burke LD @Kyamprac 30. Rikki Petrov C @AndrewWarren13 33. Valtteri Kauppinen LW @Pythonic 37. Zebulon Leavitt LD @Kraagenskul 58. Clint O’Connor LW @C_OConnor 73. King Leaf G @TheKingofLeaves Conclusion: A player who’s been a bit slow on updates, only at 250 as a S54 draftee. If this becomes a much needed spark to get them going and back in it, this is another great pick up by Nevada. They didn’t produce much while on Vancouver, so i don’t think they’ll be missed all that much. Vancouver was really active the days leading up the draft, acquiring the 8th OA and 12 OA picks. They drafted 8 players total, 3 LW, 2 LD, 1 RW, 1 C, and 1 G. Quebec City Citadelles
As with the Nevada Battleborn, the Citadelles picked 5 players during the expansion draft and filled some key roles in that part of the draft. In the SMJHL Entry Draft the QCC had a whopping 16 picks to help bolster their team. They made quite the big trade with the Maine Timber, trading away their S57 2nd and S58 3rd picks for Maine's S55 3rd-7th round picks. This was a bold move by both teams, and I think in the end QCC will end up the winner in this trade. QCC also took part in a 3 team ( ) trade of draft picks allowing them to trade away their original 3rd round pick (31st OA) and received Newfoundland's 4th round (47th OA) and the 49th OA(originally who traded it to ). Confused yet? They only bolstered those previous trades with some additional trades during the expansion draft, where the picked up KEL 2nd (24OA), ANC S56 3rd, and I wouldn’t be surprised if we see some more trade magic happening during the draft. Expansion Draft picks: 2. Stan Q. Next 3. Sven Gunnar 6.Juan Hunna-Pussent 7. Ryan Rieley 10. Alexander Roach :timbers: Entry Draft Picks: 1. Zdenko Beranek RW @ztevans 20. Jasper Maximov LD @enigmatic 24. Teylora Petrov D @Panda 26. David Danielson G @WildfireMicro 43. Max Goodman LD @Smiley 45. Boris Petrov LD @LimJahey 47. Bobov Petrov RW @indonesianhusker 49. Julian Cunningham LD @’tinkthegreat 50. Zach Dolphin RW @Dolph96 55. Tres Sombreros LW @Al Gringo 62. Jst Maro C @JstMaro 67. Bennett Hawtin LD @BNutty 74. Alfonso Fettuccine RW @tyKilla 79. Kev Kevens RW @Keven 91. Jonas Caspari LW @jakey.peach 103. Yuuto Kira Cloudera Jr. RD @kentakira Conclusion: With 5 expansion choices and 16 draftees, the Citadelles set themselves up to be competitive almost immediately. While I’m not sure they’ll make it past the first round in the playoffs, they’re put themselves in a position where they could make a run in S56 or S57. Good luck Quebec City! There’s probably too much to say about the QCC inaugural draft class, picking up 16 players, 5 RW, 2 LW, 1 C, 5 LD, 2 RD, and 1 G. They also drafted 3 of the Petrov brothers in this draft, these Petrovs are turning out to be one of the bigger families in hockey history with 6 brothers playing in the J all at once. Two great names added in as well Tres Sombreros and Alfonso Fettuccine. They also drafted the most boring name in the entire draft unfortunately Kev Kevens. I practically fell asleep typing that nam…. Nevada Battleborn
The Battleborn, just as the QCC, picked 5 players from existing teams during the expansion draft. In the SMJHL Entry Draft they had all 10 picks not making any trades prior to the Entry Draft. They'll be a bit behind the QCC on building their roster up, and will rely on some trades or signing some free agents to help themselves out here. Expansion draft picks: 1. Niccolo Livius 4. Leonids Balzams 5. Zelma Zuntnere 8. Sammy The Goon Koa 9. James Kimanje Trade: Moritz Muller (Carolina protected one additional player in exchange) Entry draft picks: 4. Vili Afalava RD @Wasty 9. Phillip Weaver G @W19eaver 19. Tanjiro Kamado LD @Andy 32. Alexis Vermette RW @treant 44. Sachimo Zoidberg III LD @Jala 54. Bane RD @Winter is coming 56. Grandmaster Funk LD @GMFunk Conclusion: Nevada still ends up with 5 players from the draft, and they receive an extra first rounder this year as well, which definitely will help them out and is a smart move on both sides. This allows NLB to keep a key part of their team while trading away a draft pick, in a year where they’ll be going all in. In return Nevada ended up with the 9th OA pick, able to secure Philip Weaver. Picking up 7 players, the Battleborn are going to need some FA signings to help bolster up their roster. As of this article, they only have 13 on the roster. 2 more great best name nominations in the draft Sachimo Zoidberg and Grandmaster Funk. All in all this draft class had 74 total draftees this year, welcome SMJHL S55! render cred: @rum_ham, @Rangerjase @Ragnar @supertardis101 @Jogurtaa @Drokeep @evilallbran @Carpy48 @enigmatic Player Page | Update Page
